X3100 and 1080p via VGA

How can it be that the DELL Latitude D630 I got from work can output glorious 1080p on my Samsung FullHD LCD-TV via VGA, whereas my new Macbook 2.4 cannot? They both have the same video adapter (Intel GMA X3100)... Apple: can we still say "It just works" ?!?!

In other posts people often talk about installing softwares like SwitchresX. I do not like that... Why should I buy an additional software to make something as basic as connecting a laptop to an external monitor?
I have even read of people that have installed Vista on their Macbook and then got 1080p right away, while still not being able to get it in Mac OS with exactly the same equipment... I am a bit annoyed by this situation
Any help will be much appreciated!

  • T61p and 1920x1080 via VGA?

I have Thinkpad T61p (6457-CT0) with NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M and internal LCD with 1680x1050 running on XP SP3, and now I bought Samsung SM2333HD 23” external LCD monitor with 1920x1080 (HDTV) resolution and I want to use dual view (int. 1680x1050 + ext.  1920x1080). The problem is when I connect ext. monitor via VGA with 1920x1080 - picture on ext. monitor is cropped from left, smaller and positioned beyond borders of visible area. Picture adjustments aren’t helping at all. When I lower resolution to 1680x1050 it is ok, but the image is blurry because it’s not native resolution of ext. monitor, so I don’t want to use it. When I try only ext. monitor with 1920x1080 with disabled internal LCD, there is still the same problem, and on 1680x1050 picture is ok, but blurry. Resolutions higher than 1920x1080 are not possible in Display Properties/Settings/Screen Resolution settings or in NVIDIA Control Panel.
I have borrowed Thinkpad Advanced Mini Dock with VGA and DVI output, and when I use DVI to connect ext. monitor, everything works fine and picture is ok, but via VGA on docking there is the same problem.
I have latest drivers for NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M from Lenovo 6.14.11.7715 (2009-01-08), and latest IBM Presentation Director 4.03 (2009-02-12), but I have also tried with older drivers and Presentation Director, but it’s all the same, only picture is differently cropped, smaller or wider. Also, strange thing is when I, , try to make a new Display Scheme in IBM Presentation Director on internal LCD + ext. monitor via VGA, it offers max. resolution of 1680x1050, which is not the case with DVI.
Just to be sure, I connected T61p via VGA to LG 32” full HD LCD TV, the picture has identical problems, so it’s not up to monitor. I have also tried to connect HP 6710b laptop via VGA to same Samsung SM233HD monitor and there are no problems, it can produce 1920x1080 with clear picture. I have also connected T61p via VGA to Lenovo L220x monitor, and now Display Properties/Settings/Screen Resolution settings (other than 1680x1050) offer 1920x1080 and 1920x1200 resolutions. When I set 1920x1080 the problem is identical, but when I select 1920x1200, picture is ok.
So my conclusion is that T61p is not capable of producing 1920x1080 via VGA correctly, although it can produce 1680x1050 and 1920x1200. The main difference is that 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 are 16:10, but 1920x1080 is 16:9, so I am guessing that VGA output on T61p has problems with 16:9? Or is there problem with sending analog signal via VGA when it exceeds internal LCD native resolution (1680x1050) only for some resolutions? I have tried searching Internet and forums, but there are no answers. Maybe it is the problem when internal LCD is 16:10 and external monitor via VGA is 16:9 and I use dual view? I think there should be no problems with Quadro FX 570M and I don’t want to buy Thinkpad Advanced Mini Dock just because 1920x1080 only works with my monitor via DVI which is present on casing of T61p (and because it’s firm’s laptop, not mine). Do you have any suggestions what is wrong with graphics adapter, drivers or VGA output or how can I solve it?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Through NVIDIA Control Panel, which you should have if you installed drivers.. You can get it via Display Properties -> Settings tab -> Advanced button -> Quadro FX 570M tab -> Start the NVIDIA Control Panel.
In NVIDIA Control Panel on the left side in the tree select Display, Manage custom resolutions, select external display on the right and click Create...
In the Custom Resolutions window click on Advanced >> and (in Back-end parameters section) in Timing Standard select Manual. You'll be able to enter (in Advance Refresh Rate Parameters) under Desired refresh rate value from 59.500 to 60.499. I have tried 59.500 and it worked... You can also try to change other settings, if you understand the meaning. There is a Test button in the upper right corner.
    Hope it helps...

If you use Lion, go to Applications/ Mission Control and, if you have more Desktops, as attached, it means you have more, and you must select the one you need for a certain app. If default settings has not changed, this is Control with left / right arrow
If in Snow Leopard and earlier, you have these settings in System Preferences only. In Lion, you also have some settings in Sys Prefs.

  • Choosing between 720p and 1080p on Mini connected to Sony HDTV (1920x1080)

I have a late 2009 Mac Mini and a SONY HDTV and had no difficulties at all in hooking them up. I just connected the Mini Display Port to DVI connector which ships with the MAC Mini to a Belkin DVI to HDMI cable (also available from Apple Store) and connected the HDMI to my TV. I switched on the TV, selected the correct HDMI input, then switched on the Mac Mini and could see the picture immediately. I was missing the menu bar at the top so went to SYSTEM PREFERENCES and then DISPLAYS and the OPTIONS tab, and unselected OVERSCAN, and that gave me a perfect picture (slightly smaller than full screen but perfectly adequate as far as I'm concerned).
By default my resoluton was set at 1080p (presumably the Mac detected that the native resolution of my TV is 1080p). The DISPLAYS box shows a number of resolution with a little TV screen icon beside them, as if suggesting those resolutions for use with the Sony. It shows 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. There are also lots of others without TV icons beside them.
The only problem I found is that 1080p made it quite difficult to read text on my screen, even though it's not very far away from the sofa. My eyesight is very good but I couldn't read the screen comfortably when surfing the net or even when changing settings etc. I swiiched, therefore, to 720p and this produces a very comfortable size of text for using the MAC.
My question is whether it really makes such a big difference whether one chooses 720p or 1080p, as I really can't see much difference for playback of video from Hulu or other streaming websites. Even when I played a DVD movie from the Mac Mini superdrive, the difference in quality was hard to detect. I guess if I tried viewing Full 1080p HD material, there would be some difference, but how much of such material is available on the net anyway? I take it that switching between 720p and 1080p wouldn't cause any harm, if I chose to do so occasionally for watching any Full HD movies that I rip?
    Look forward to hearing views!

Hi- I also picked up a mini a week ago, and have it hooked up to my Sony HDTV via HDMI, just as you. The same thing happened the first time I connected the mini to my tv- with overscan on, the top and bottom of the screen were cut off.
The solution is to pick up your Sony remote, go to the onscreen menus, and make sure that 'full pixels' option is selected. When you do, the screen will be absolutely perfectly aligned.
I mention this because while in overscan mode, I find that the Sony makes an absolutely beautiful screen, and text is quite easy to read, albeit a bit small.

  • Connection Help via VGA without apple's VGA adapter

Hi, I just bought a brand new mini online today. I deglected to purchase a mini-dvi to vga adapter thinking i do not need it with my current setup.
--Windows pc with a dual DVI out graphics card(1 dvi-vga adapter connected to a vga cable--->to the monitor)
Can i simply take that DVI-VGA adapter off my pc and throw it on apple's DVI.. plug my monitor cable into that and get video? OR... do i need to run to microcenter when i get my mac just for a 30$ adapter to VGA?
I planned on getting a TV within the next month or two using a DVI-HDMI cable anyway.. so i was trying to make due with what i already had.
    Thanks in advance,
    -Joe

I understand that the mini comes with a mini-DVI adapter, and that would be put to use connecting it to a DVI-VGA adapter that comes with most graphics cards now-a-days. which then would essentially a VGA out port for the mac mini.... in turn being able to connect it to my monitor via VGA cable... correct?
Here is an example of what im talking about: http://img.tomshardware.com/us/2005/11/23/pcinterfaces_101/vgadvi1.jpg
If i connect that to the included mini-DVI to DVI adapter that comes with the mini TO that adapter in the picture TO a basic VGA cable.. technically it should work?
A bit hillbilly rigged but its better than wasting 30$ on a brand new cable i'd never use again after like two weeks.
I've got a day or two before the mac actually comes so I'm just trying to head off any problems ahead of time.

  • Satellite P200 1EE - can this output to 1080p via HDMI?

    HI
My first post on this forum.
I recently bought this notebook and have connected it to my LCD TV at home. However, I can't seem to get 1080p via HDMI only 1080i (my TV is capable of accepting 1080p through HDMI). Anyone know if this is possible? (I have updated the latest display drivers from Toshiba).
Also whilst watching movies, I am noticing a lot of grain/noise on the notebook screen. Is this normal or is it a defect? I was watching Transformers HD DVD last night and could see loads of noise not only during dark scenes but generally throughout the film.
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Shak.

    Hi Shak.
It helps that you've ensured your LCD tv supports 1080p. For this resolution you have to check in your graphic card driver catalyst a needed option. Open that control center and look for dvi settings and uncheck the "reduce dvi frequenzy on high resolution displays" option. 1080p should work now.
For the grainy/noisy thing with the Transformers HD-DVD. I don't think it is a defect or something like that. Just put in another movie and see if the picture quality is better or not. Quality differs from movie to movie.
Check it out and give me a quick answer if it worked.
    Regards,
    Joey

  • New monitor not recieving signal via DVI, ok via VGA

    Hello,
I have one of the original minis (1.25 GHz, 512 MB, etc) purchased back in early 2005. Until now I've been using an old CRT display connected via VGA. This past weekend I purchased a new 20" AOC LCD monitor from Costco. I attached it with the supplied VGA cable and it worked great. The next day I picked up a DVI cable, attached it and after a minute or two the monitor found the signal and displayed a beautiful image. After five minutes the monitor lost the signal and I haven't been able to get it back since. I exchanged the DVI cable for a new one, but still can't get a pic displayed. The monitor itself is self switching. It knows if the connection is via VGA or DVI.
What am I doing wrong? Could it be the mini? The monitor?
    Please help.
    Thanks
    Dave

Yes, it is a display specific issue. If you look at this Apple spec page for the original mini and do a search on the word "coherent" it will take you to the part of the spec that deals with the issue.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP65
Apple displays are not a problem because they have always used coherent receivers. But any other monitor is a roll of the dice, especially with the original mini. The newer mini with GMA950 graphics appears to be much less affected by this even though Apple left the wording in this part of the spec unchanged between the original G4 mini and the current Intel ones.

  • ATV2 on SD Projector via VGA?

I know VGA output cannot be adapted to HDMI without a converter box, but can it work the other way around? Obviously the picture wouldn't be 720p, but would I be able to display the ATV2 output with a HDMI to VGA adapter? And would the audio work? The projector can display 16:9 (4:3 native) if that matters. Thanks.

VGA doesn't carry sound, so you would need separate sound connection........... I assume you use one now since there is no mention of HDMI. The picture will transmit via VGA.

  • IPad2 Mirroring via VGA Connector?

I"ve got a coworker who is trying to mirror his new iPad2 display to an LCD projector using Apple's VGA connector accessory. We've been unable to get the projector to see anything from the iPad2, and I'm wondering if mirroring is only supported when using Apple's Digital connector and connecting to a projector using an HDMI cable?
His projector doesn't have an HDMI input, so VGA is the only means of connecting the iPad2 to the projector.
Should he be able to mirror via VGA? (And by mirroring, we're referring to any app, not just those that support external displays like Keynote).

I just tried it on my iPad2, and it worked. I then went back to my coworker's iPad2, and it worked on it, too.
I can only guess the VGA connector was loose at the iPad's dock connector on his iPad2 when he tried it.

  • HT4279 I have a Macbook Pro (late 2012) and I would like to connect it to 2 screens simultaneously (1 screen is a TV and can only take HDMI, the other is a larger computer screen and has both VGA and HDMI connections). How can I do this?

I have a Macbook Pro (late 2012) and I would like to connect it to 2 screens simultaneously (1 screen is a TV and can only take HDMI, the other is a larger computer screen and has both VGA and HDMI connections). How can I do this?

The article you cited refers to The Mac Pro, a 50lb silver tower -- not a notebook computer.
    Everymac.com says:
    2nd Display Support:
    Dual/Mirroring*
    2nd Max. Resolution:
    2560x1600 (x2*)
    Details:
*This model supports a simultaneous maximum resolution up to 2560x1600 on two external displays via Thunderbolt. Alternately, it can support a single display up to 2560x1600 via Thunderbolt and a single display up to 1920x1200 via HDMI. Although it can theoretically power all three external displays, as confirmed by a helpful reader, it runs too hot with three displays connected.
Also see: How many external displays can the Retina Display MacBook Pro models support? What is the maximum supported resolution of each? Are adapters required?
When using other than ThunderBolt displays, the ThunderBolt port is directly compatible with Mini DisplayPort, and can be forced into compatibility (with Single-Link DVI or HDMI up to 1920 wide) with a simple adapter.
To adapt to wider displays, an ACTIVE Dual-Link adapter is needed, about US$100.

  • Sanyo 26" HD LCD DP26640 - digital via VGA?

I own a Sanyo 26" DP26640 that I've used with a Mac Mini (HDMI to HDMI) for almost 2 years. One of the HDMI ports has become dislodged from the inside and I'm exploring using the VGA port.
I've found several cables (HDMI to VGA and Thunderbolt to VGA), but they all indicate that they will only work if the TV supports digital output via the VGA port.
Does anyone know if this TV supports digital output via the VGA port? Thanks in advance.

I want to use my iphone as a monitor to review video FROM my Security camera DVR via VGA. So I want to plug my iphone directly into my dvr and review recorded video.
Is this ppossible. If so how? If not it should be...

    No, it's not possible.
The iPhone does not accept video input.
Connect a monitor to the system or purchase a system that allows remote viewing from a mobile device.

  • Resolution via DVI lower then via VGA

    Hello,
I need your support for my new HW composition.
I have a new DELL Latitude E5440 and the fitting DockingStation DELL PR02X.
Connecting my monitor via DVI I get a max. resolution of 1440x900.
Connecting my monitor via VGA I get a max. resolution of 1680x1050 (max of monitor).
With my former laptop of FSC I could use the monitor via VGA in the highest resolution.
Can you please help me to get the high resolution via DVI?
Thank you very much for your help in advance,
    Scorino

    Hello,
the Docking station is using dual link DVI.
The docking station has two Display Ports...one under each DVI port.
Currently I don't own a display port adapter and no display with a display port.
Furthermore DVI dual link should be able to get a resolution of 2048 x 1536 Pixel, not 1280 x 1024.
I would like to use this docking station with DVI and high resolution (Full HD).
Currently I don't understand why this is not possible.
My last laptop was able to produce Full HD to my displays via the same cable.
Just the Laptop and the docking station changed. I'm sorry that I cannot connect DVI directly to the laptop, because there is no port available.
Thanks for your answer in advance.
