X40 Win Xp Core Dump - No CDROM -How do I even hook a cd to this machine?

Hi,
Win XP dumps core with some registry corruption error right before the OS completes loading.  This X40 has no CD ROM so all this talk (in other forum messages) about Restore CD's is a bit confusing... First off. How would I get the boot loader to even see an external CD ROM?. If I had a CDROM I would proably try to repair windows first (XP PRO). IF that didnt work then I would also consider getting restore CDs to get it back to its ideal state.   Any suggestions from any crazy lenovo experts out there?  My original thought was to pull the drive and stick it in a desktop PC for data recovery and a re-install of XP. However,  sounds like there are proprietary form factor issues there so a regular laptop to ide converter might not work - I havent opened the laptop yet and would just assume avoid if possible.
Thanks
Scootarski

when you first turn on the computer the ibm logo comes up. push f12 at that screen and it will show you the boot device list. if you have your cd rom hooked up it should show it in the list.at the bottom of the list it shows startup. if you hit that it goes into bios and then you can choose startup and at the top of the next page it shows boot. choose it and it will give you a list of what you can boot up with. read the instructions on the right and move usb cd to the top of the list. good luck

  • [SOLVED] How do I get systemd to stop handling core dumps itself?

Based on advice in other threads, I did this:
    # ln -s /dev/null /etc/sysctl.d/coredump.conf
    # /lib/systemd/systemd-sysctl
but it didn't work; /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern still contains "systemd-coredump ...".  Furthermore, the processes that I have dumping core do so when using a lot (many GB) of memory, so the core dumps are huge.  This causes systemd-journald to eat up 100% CPU for a long time after core dumps.
Also, how do I delete the ones that are already saved (that show up in systemd-coredumpctl)?
Last edited by tavianator (2013-05-22 21:54:15)

    Hello tavianator.
This didn't work for me either, so i changed the link to:
    # ln -s /dev/null /etc/sysctl.d/50-coredump.conf
After that /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern shows "core" only.
    Hope that helps.
Edit: I used the naming convention from /lib/sysctl.d/ which is also "50-coredump.conf".

  • MDM installation on AIX 5.3 core dumps

    Hi all,
We installed MDM 5.5 SP4 on AIX 5.3 ML 5 (and the latest patches were applied last week-end).
The MDM Server, Import and Syndication daemons are started.
Database is Oracle 10.2 (corresponding Oracle client is used), installed on the same server.
MDM client software is in sync with the server level.
Since the installation, we get core dumps of the mds daemon (even when trying to perform the most basic operations). Consider it to be completely unusable for testing anything. You look at it, it breaks. Sorry, but that is how it is.
MDM Patches and hotfixes to the patches have been applied up to the latest level The problem is reported at SAP Support and they have core dumps, logfiles, trace files for studying.  So far, the only feedback we got was to install MDM on its own server (it is a trial installation on a server where other applications are running - though I can hardly see that as a cause for core dumps).
    My questions :
    - are we unique in running MDM on this software paltform ?
    - are others (if they exist experiencing the same problems on AIX 5.3 ?
To be honest : for the moment we are thinking about reinstalling on a Windows server.
Thanks in advance for any feedback,
    Frank Van Overloop

    Hello,
we have finally made some progress on this issue.
Basically, we suffered from a combination of :
    - wrong usage of the product
    - probably shaky exception handling in the AIX version
The cause was found by SAP MDM support after we reconstructed the problem while using a special debug-version of the mds executable. This produced a usable dump.
--- extract from the SAP reply -
The core dump shows a crash in recalculating the family tree after the
import. Family tree is being used only to create printed catalogs (which require the publisher and an additional license).
    1) Do you have any value in the categories table?
    2) Does the MDM server crash if you cancel the automatic family tree
recalculation in the import map, and answer "no" in the dialog box which asks to recalculate the family tree?
    3) Do you intend to create a printed catalog?
If the answer to any of the questions is "no", then this asserts that
the recalculation of the family tree should not take place at all. In
this case the family table could/should be deleted. And this should not
    reoccur.
    end extract -
After we deleted this family table,  the tests are running stable.
It's a pity that the program does not 'die' in a more elegant way or gives some understandable indication on what is going wrong.
It also looks like this exception is handled better on the Windows implementation. The same 'functional mistake' was made there and this produced no dumps at all. Could be a porting issue from one platform to another.
    Regards,
    Frank

Please help me on this, How to extract the string variable content from the core file.
During core file analysis using dbx, it puts value as CLASS against string local variables.
But I need to know the exact value during the core dump.
I'm able to print other than string variables.
Is this possbile using dbx or is there any other tool can help me on this.

  • How to view database core dump file

I have an Oracle server on windows 2000. Now, I found the oracle server will produce a core dump file in ..\cdump directory. But this file is only a system memory image, so it's hard to analysis the core dump reason, could you tell me how to view this file? thanks

There's no much useful information for you too see. You can create a SR with Oracle support and upload file if you want to investigate the cause of core dump. also check if there's any errors in your alert<SID>.log and core_dump_dest

  • [Solved] Systemd: how to disable core dumps on application crashes?

    Hi,
I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum, but I just couldn't find a place that's really suitable for such a question.
I have a really annoying problem with systemd: I'm developing software, which sometimes crashes. And when it crashes, I sometimes want to examine core dumps.
The problem is that systemd seems to force coredumps, but saves them in some kind of obscure internal storage, where I don't have a clue about how to extract them from.
The only hint that I could find was http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/s … 04643.html which isn't really helpful.
The problem is that systemd installs its coredump handler on boot:
    [root@neptun ~]# cat /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern
    |/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-coredump %p %u %g %s %t %e
Is there any way to disable this? I don't want core dumps to be generated unless I need them. Just clearing that file on boot seems too hackish for me, does anybody know if there is a systemd
configuration option to turn coredumps off?
    Cheers,
    andr3as

The .conf file was recently renamed so the symlink must be called different as well. But I found it needs to contain something to actually overload systemd's default
    # echo kernel.core_pattern= > /etc/sysctl.d/50-coredump.conf
    # /lib/systemd/systemd-sysctl
    # cat /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern # should be empty

    Hello all,

    Hi Vutha,
Are you looking for instructions on collecting a core file, created by a failing userland process, or do you want to collect kernel crashdump files ?
You can look at the output of the coreadm command to find out what file is stored in which location.
What to collect is nicely described in [url https://supporthtml.oracle.com/ep/faces/secure/km/DocumentDisplay.jspx?id=1010911.1]What to send to Oracle Sun after a system panic and/or unexpected reboot (Doc ID 1010911.1).

  • Newbie: How To find Core Dump files on Unix?!  URGENT!

Hi, i would like to know on How To find Core Dump files on Unix?!
I know they should be found in  /usr/sap/<SYSTEM-ID>/<INSTANZ>/work
but there are no "core" files and also in tmp is nothing unusual but disk space is totally full.
So how to find the big files which i could delete to make system running again?!
can someone provide me with some infos?!
    br

    1. which user i should use to search and destroy?! root-user or SYSID-User?!
Always use the user with the least permissions to do the job, don't use root if your sidadm can do it. If you want to find / delete SAP files use sidadm.
    2. I found no core files and the harddisk is still 100% full, what files might also cause this problem
In your first post you wrote that /usr/sap/SID/INST/work dir is full, it is most likely that some trace files got to large. Check for files like dev_*, dew_w0 for example is the trace file of work process 0, dev_disp is the trace of the dispatcher and so on. You either have to increase the size of the filesystem, or find the cause for the growing file. It can be due to an increased trace level.
    3. What on database-side could cause this problems?! can i search for sth here.
This does not look like a database issue so far.
    4. i was unable to use the given scripts (noob!), what can i do else?!
Which one, please post what you typed and the error you got.
    Best regards, Michael

Through IBM, we got those answer :
Looking at the javacore files, we're seeing OOM errors. However,
looking at a heapdump, we're not seeing total heap space exhaustion -
around half of the heap is occupied, and occupancy by the vartious
objects seems, to me at least, to be normal.
    The threads
seem to be using the compound class loader to load the customer's
"Hibernate" code - and in the largest of the threads in the heapdump -
(it consumes 258,720,168 bytes), the class org/hibernate/impl/Session
Impl and its children - consume 129,540,864 bytes.
The other 128,785,680 is consumed by org/hibernate/proxy/CGLIBLazyInitia
lizer. There are some other classes that make up the small difference
    if you added these numbers.
The class com/softleader/hibernate/util/HibernateUtil and its children
    consume 74,932,848 bytes.
I could go on through the heapdump, but there are very large classes
in here, and it may be more advantageous to get a verbosegc turned on
to show the patterns of JVM Heap requirements.
I suppose that the customer is developing this app for a 32bit
architecture market, since they are keeping their JVM Heap within the
32 bit limits. If this is the case, then Xmx=1280 and Xms=384 seems a
more reasonable JVM setting. If they are not, and they want to try
Xmx above 1280, then we have not yet had much experience with 64 bit
but I'd expect that the larger heapsize would benefit the application.
Either way, we need verbosegc turned on to monitor the heap requests.
That mean, i have to turn up JVM Heap size? or what can i do for it?
    Thanks a lot.

I'd hook up a profiler to your app and monitor it to see what's happening and what objects aren't playing nice.

  • How to turn off core dump for WebLogic 8.1 running on AIX 5.3

    Hi there,
Is there a way we can turn off core dumping for WebLogic 8.1 running on AIX 5.3?
    Thank you.

    Hi Surender,
Please add the following Flag in the JAVA_OPTIONS of your servers StartScript like following :
    JAVA_OPTIONS=${JAVA_OPTIONS}     -Xdump:system:none

  • Hotspot core dumping during JVM garbage collection ?

We have an application which calls a 3rd party supplied server API which has recently been upgraded to use Java 1.5
We are getting the following error reported by our client application. The application is also now running Java 1.5 but references many classes in jar files which would have quite old code in.
The supplier of the API has stated that the problem requires us to recompile all our jar files using v 1.5 ( including things like jconnect and jms ?!?!? ). This sounds like a bit of a cop-out to me, not to mention being impossible since we don't have the source for things like jconnect.
I suspect that there is a garbage collection problem at the bottom of all this, but I'm not sure how I can "prove" this, nor do I currently have any real clue as to how to fix any GC problem that may exist.
The application is supposed to wait for a message on a MQSeries queue and then transforms it via Xalan XSLT and sends it to a Server application. I've tried playing around with heap sizes etc but that just seems to make it worse. If I leave it at the settings that the previous version used then the client at least manages to process a couple of messages before core dumping. There doesn't seem to be a consistent trigger event to cause the core dump ( it's not a message arriving on a queue for example ) but it does seem to be fairly consistent timewise, i.e. after
    Any ideas gratefully accepted.

The very first suggestion I have is to move your VM to a more recent update of 1.5.0.
It looks like you are crashing with 5.0u3, and I'm pretty sure 5.0u16 is available. You
don't want to waste your time chasing a bug that's already been fixed.

    Error analysis
An SAP System process was terminated by an operating system signal.
    Possible reasons for this are:
    1. Internal SAP System error.
    2. Process was terminated externally (by the system administrator).

    How to correct the error
The SAP System work directory (e.g. /usr/sap/c11/D00/work ) often
    contains a file called 'core'.
Save this file under another name.
If you cannot solve the problem yourself, please send the
    following documents to SAP:

To obtain this, select the "Print" function on the current screen.
    2. A suitable hardcopy prinout of the system log.
To obtain this, call the system log with Transaction SM21
and select the "Print" function to print out the relevant
       part.
    3. If the programs are your own programs or modified SAP programs,
       supply the source code.

  • System Core Dumped after Oracle patch upgrade 9.2.0.6 to 9.2.0.8

    Hi,
We are continously getting dumps on our BW Central instance server after we did an Oracle patch upgrade from 9.2.0.6 to 9.2.0.8.
    Following is our system environment
    SAP Release.............. "640"
    Application server....... "abci"
    Operating system......... "SunOS"
    Release.................. "5.10"
    Hardware type............ "sun4v"
    Database server.......... "abdb"
    Database type............ "ORACLE"
    Database name............ "ABP"
    Database owner........... "SAPABP"
    SAP kernel............... "640"
    Database version......... "OCI_920 "
    Patch level.............. "175"
Following below is the Core Dump that is generated for any process chains that we schedule on our BW server
    Runtime Errors         SYSTEM_CORE_DUMPED
    Date and Time          14.04.2008 09:26:17
    ShrtText
         Process terminated by signal 11.
    What happened?
The current ABAP program had to be terminated because the
ABAP processor detected an internal system error.
The current ABAP program "SAPMSSY2" had to be terminated because the ABAP
processor discovered an invalid system state.
    What can you do?
Make a note of the actions and input which caused the error.
To resolve the problem, contact your SAP system administrator.
You can use transaction ST22 (ABAP Dump Analysis) to view and administer
termination messages, especially those beyond their normal deletion
        date.
    Error analysis
An SAP System process was terminated by an operating system signal.
        Possible reasons for this are:
        1. Internal SAP System error.
        2. Process was terminated externally (by the system administrator).
Last error logged in SAP kernel
        Component............ "Taskhandler"
Place................ "SAP-Server awci_ABP_00 on host awci (wp 5)"
        Version.............. 1
        Error code........... 11
        Error text........... "ThSigHandler: signal"
        Description.......... " "
        System call.......... " "
        Module............... "thxxhead.c"
        Line................. 9780
    How to correct the error
The SAP System work directory (e.g. /usr/sap/c11/D00/work ) often
        contains a file called 'core'.
Save this file under another name.
If you cannot solve the problem yourself and you wish to send
an error message to SAP, include the following documents:
        1. A printout of the problem description (short dump)
To obtain this, select in the current display "System->List->
           Save->Local File (unconverted)".
        2. A suitable printout of the system log
To obtain this, call the system log through transaction SM21.
Limit the time interval to 10 minutes before and 5 minutes
after the short dump. In the display, then select the function
           "System->List->Save->Local File (unconverted)".
        3. If the programs are your own programs or modified SAP programs,
           supply the source code.
To do this, select the Editor function "Further Utilities->
           Upload/Download->Download".
        4. Details regarding the conditions under which the error occurred
or which actions and input led to the error.
    Kindly help.
    Regards
    Sachin

No. If the environment would be wrong the system wouldn´t start up.
Core dumps are in 99 % of the cases program errors (in the SAP kernel or in an interface (libdbora*)), misaligend accesses of data etc.
If you encounter such an error have a look in the C-Stack. If you can´t see where the error is happening opening an OSS call. Most of those errors are fixed by installing the latest patches for the kernel and the database interface.
