X4200 server, is it possible to use SATA drives instead of SAS drives

Hello,
We are planning to purchase X4200 servers; According to documentation, they use SAS drive, which are quite expensive. So is it possible to use SATA drives? I read somewhere that their interface is similar and SATA can work with SAS.
Thanks
Steve

Hello,
I don't see any SATA drives listed for the X4200.
To quote rukbat:
"If there is any sort of warranty or service contract coverage on that box,
you will need to use Sun parts if you hope to maintain active coverage
for that warranty or contract. Parts from third-party sellers may invalidate
or suspend the coverage for as long as they are in the chassis."

  • Oracle VM server crashes with disk corruption using SATA 2

Created OEL 5 x86_64 on a HVM and occassionally the VM server crashes with the following messages on the console:
    ata1.0.0 tag 0 cmd 0x25 Emask 0x4 stat 0x40 err 0x0 timeout (frozen)
failed to recover some devices retrying in 5 seconds
comreset failed to respond in 30 seconds
port is too slow to respond, delay is known to occur on vacant sata ports
    BMDMA stat 0x24
hardreset failed retry in 5 secs
After this I've no other option but to perform a hard reboot of the system. Down the road I installed oracleasmlib-2.0.3-1.el5.x86_64 and the above problem was persistent when the oel5 virtual machine boots up. I just couldn't get the virtual machine to start. I tried many workarounds but didn't work. I finally disabled SATA2 in the bios and enabled SATA1 and the system has been stable for the past 2 days. Originally my bios was set to SATA1+2.
I guess there's a bug with OEL 5 kernel on VM's using SATA 2 driver.

If it was a hardware issue I'd imagine that this problem would have been occuring only on one machine. I had this problem on all my 3 machines where I had setup VM and OEL5. Prior to this, I had OEL 4u4 running on all these machines and everything worked fine.

  • K8N Neo4 Won't boot using sata drive(s)

    Hey everyone,
I've got a pc that will only boot when the boot is written on a (P) ATA drive (the ones with the big cables).
The problem is, the old ATA drive went corrupt and we placed a SATA drive in it.
The ATA drive was left in the pc back then without any data on it (not sure why) with windows installed on the SATA disk.
Recently I discovered the ATA disk is not empty, it actually contains the pc's boot files (boot.ini, ntldr and the other thing, I forgot)
The ATA disk being partially corrupt and it being only a matter of time before it won't do anything at all I want those boot files on my Sata drive.
I tried a couple of things that should have worked but they didn't.
Then I decided to reinstall windows only having the sata disk attached.
Everything goes well until the setup has finished copying files to the harddrive and wants to reboot.
When it tries to boot to continue the installation from the hard disk I will once again get the well known 'boot disk error, please insert system disk' (or something like it).
I know the boot order is ok (certainly when its the only drive in the pc excluding the dvd drive).
The disk is being recognised in the BIOS correctly, even in the windows setup (no need to supply extra drivers)
The Operating system I'm trying to install is Windows XP Professional SP2
The sata disk is a 620 Gb Samsung disk, set with jumpers to sata 1 mode (Sata 150)
I don't think any other pc information is relevant (it works just fine), if any more info is needed ill add it.
I've got a ticket on the MSI online support, but I thought I'd ask it here as well
Maybe someone has any idea how to fix this.
I'm not 100% sure if the pc is running the latest BIOS but I think so, I can check tomorrow.

Not vital, but good to know: During boot-up, first BIOS screen, hit I think key F11 to make sure BIOS knows what to inform Windows. Also have a look in boot order, and only have the SATA disk therein.
More importantly: From the motherboard page it seems as if you have to use a floppy and load RAID drivers to get SATA disk work correctly. ...It has got a few years on it's back.
    http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=177
Its worth a shot I suppose.
I remember when I first got it I had to use a driver on a floppy disk, however back then the newest disk you could get was Windows XP (SP-0 aka pre service packs)
The Windows XP SP-2 disk seems to recognise the drive, but i see no harm in finding a floppy drive and giving it a shot.
Or possibly trying a diffrent OS such as linux or vista / 7.
Ill give it a try one of these days and report back, for anyone else reading, suggestions are still welcome

  • Using SATA drives...no luck!

I bought a couple of 500 gb SATA drives over the weekend thinking that I could use them with FCE. I think I'm assuming they work like firewire, and I'm thinking they don't.
    * Can you daisy-chain SATA?
    * Is there some kind of outboard E-SATA to Firewire converter? I'm using a Mac Mini until Apple comes out with something better. I also have an adapter for my MacBook pro, but can't get it to work.
So in the meantime I'm using the drives as USB 2.0 and just going off and doing other things around the house during captures, which take forever, as do rendering.
    Tnx.
    /john

Well, I would have put them in an enclosure that supports FireWire, esp. since the Mini has no eSata interface but does have FW400. Take a look at the OWC enclosures - they have a pretty good reputation. The Mercury Elite enclosure is a 2-drive FW800/400/USB2 unit; there is also a 1-drive Quad interface version.
Putting the drives in the G4 will work but you will need a SATA controller card. BTW, I'd think a 2x1GHZ G4 would be a pretty nice machine. How much RAM do you have? And what is the existing graphics card?

  • Can Adobe Flash be an alternate soft for Adobe Photoshop (for PRINT)? Is it possible to use Adobe Fl

Is it possible to use Adobe Flash instead of adobe photoshop for generating images for PRINT???
how about the CMYK settings? Will i have an issue with that? Please I need an expert at this too.

No. Flash would be one of the worst applications to substitute for Photoshop for creating art for print output. If you must use something other than Photoshop, you could use Illustrator, it is specifically designed to create artwork for print.
Flash has no direct method for outputting CMYK.

  • MS-7008 SATA drives not visible

    Hi,
    My MS-7008 ATX Mainboard has:
    Supports Intel® P4 Northwood/Prescott (Socket 478) processor.
    VIA® PT880 chipset
    VIA® VT8237 chipset
    - High Bandwidth V-link Client controller
    - Integrated Faster Ethernet LPC
    - Integrated Hardware Sound Blaster/Direct Sound AC97 audio
    - Ultra DMA 66/100/133 master mode PCI EIDE controller
    - ACPI
    - Supports Serial ATA
    - Supports USB2.0
Have been funning this motherboard for many years without problems. Until now, when I decided to use SATA drives in addition. Bought Samsung 1 TB (HD103UJ model) drive, connected to MB and fired up my W2K3 system.
To my large dissapointment drives did not show up in the list of available disks. I am looking under Computer Management - Disk Management. Device Manager shows some error under SCSI and RAID Controllers - VIA RAID Conntroller 3149 ... It has this yellow sign with "!" in it. Understand that driver for SATA migh be missing. Since that point I have been to tones of pages on web reading and searching, but after two days still no luck... Tried MSI page, VIA (producer of southbridge chipset) page, tried out many drivers I could find there, but still same message. On the other hand, those are not listed in computer start up post messages either. I checked all settings in BIOS, found only one regarding SATA and there it says enabled.
The only thing I did not check out yet is to play with HDD jumpers. Somewhere I read that by limiting speed of HDD one can make them appear. But I do not have jumper avalable and HDD manual is very unclear, not sure if I can do that even if I had jumper. Have only 4 pins ( two sets times two pins) so it is only 4 possible combinations, will try as soon as I get some pins.
Anybody else have any other idea??? Really painfull to search for something that should just work in "plug & play" mode

Unfortunatelly Disk Management does not show that disk. I am quite sure this has to do with finding right drivers. Furthermore, I hope that these drivers can be installed now, after system has been installed. I believe SATA drivers need to be installed during system installation only if SATA drive is the one where you install the system. In my case, this drive will only be used as data drive, so hopefully I can find the right driver and install it now. Pleaes note, that BIOS identifies SATA 1 driver (I temporarely connected another SATA drive that I had). The only problem is, I can not find the driver.... One possible reason could be that my system "windows Server 2003 X86  is not supported"... That would be dissapointing :( I have looked through MSI page as well as VIA support and tried many possible drives (I go into device manager and select SATA driver that is currently with yellow warning sign, right click it and do update, then select the new downloaded driver, but system does not accept it).
I also tried to uninstall existing drive completely, and then do "search  for hardware changes". This finds new device and places it not under unidentified devices without driver. It places into SCSI and RAID controllers group and call device something that ends 3149 ... VIA chip used on my board is 8237, so again, kind of weired number that Windows automatically assigns to new device. But again, it does not allow me to change the driver to any of the downloaded ones, saying that it is not newer driver than the one currently installed....

  • Can I install a SATA drive in Mirror Drive Door G4?

I am looking at a Seagate 500 GB SATA drive at a great price at MWave ($109.) but see that SATA may require a different cable connector from the IDEs that I normally use in my box. Can I buy some kind of adaptor cable, or do I have to get a card of some kind. Where and how much?
Or, could I install the SATA (it's a ST3500630AS) in an external enclosure that fits ATA 133 3.5 hard drives?
    Thanks,

    Dual 1.25 GHz PM/G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi
You'd need a Mac compatible PCI card containing a SATA controller. The FirmTek SeriTek 1S2 or Sonnet Tempo is a popular two port choice (they're effectively the same card) and are available for around $70.
The Sonnet Tempo at least comes with a single SATA data cable, and a single power converter cable that allows you to use a legacy molex power connector (as found in the G4s) to power a SATA drive. Some SATA drives come with both power connectors anyway, hence the converter cable isn't required, but I don't think the Seagates do.
I use SATA drives in my G4 as they're marginally faster, the cabling is generally easier and more importantly they can also be moved to newer Macs in the future which support SATA drives natively. For me the extra cost of a SATA card was worthwhile.

SATA cards are also available from ACARD and SIIG etc.

  • How can i use adobe drive/cs4 for storing images and interact this with adobe cq5.4 DAM...

    Hi,
Can anybody suggest me i want use adobe drive to store images and i want to access the images for my cq5.4 instance..
I want to integrate drive to the cq5.4 dam for ignoring the dam burden on cq5 instane repository..
Is it possible to use this drive? or is there any other way i can achieve my task?
    Thanks,
    Sony C.

Adobe Drive software doesn't store images; it enables integration of a DAM system with Creative Suite and now Creative Cloud desktop apps.
Adobe Drive 3 is the first version of the software to support integration with Adobe's DAM. This version was designed to work with CS5 and CS5.5 apps.
We do not have a version of Drive that supports integration with CQ 5.4 DAM and CS4 apps.

  • Can I use iCloud Drive like an external drive?

I would like to use iCloud Drive to store my stuff (docs, videos, photos etc) but I don't what these same files occupying storage on my local hard disk.
Is it possible to use iCloud Drive to upload files that I want stored there and then simply download them when needed.   Or...
...can I be selective with which files/folders sync and which don't?

What's on your computer is a phantom listing. The only space it uses is that needed for the entries.
That's only for files from apps that can save directly to the iCloud drive, Numbers, Pages, etc.  If you add local files/folders to the iCloud Drive folder locally
the files just get moved to that folder which is in the ~Library/Mobile Documents folder and remain on the hard drive while also being copied to the iCloud Driver servers for access by other devices.  However, those files must be downloaded to the other devices before they can be viewed or used on that device. They can't be viewed or otherwise accessed at iCloud.com.
So if one were to drag several folders of files into the iCloud Drive window as shown above all it's doing is moving them to a different location and copying them to the iCloud drive.  There's no saving of space on the hard drive.

  • KT8 Neo.......Led Activity does not work with SATA drives

    Is this another MSI Flop.
Does anybody know if the HD led works when using SATA drives connected to the Via controller on the K8T Neo board?
I checked the case led and it works fine.   It is not burnt out.
I also have the K7N2 Delta board and the HD led does not work on that board either when using SATA hard drives.  I was told the led connecter was never wired to detect activity for the SATA drives only for IDE.  A bios upgrade would never fix it.
I just setup K8T Neo and other than the HD Led not working the board seems to be pretty stable.

The only led activity I get is when the board is first powered on and I just recently noticed when I play a DVD.  The led seems to flicker when the dvd is playing.
Other than that I see no led activity with 1 or 2 SATA drives connected to the VIA controller.
Can someone confirm that it either works or it doesn't work.
I keep reading all these posts and some say it works and some say it don't.
Unless their is a new revision of the KT8 Neo and everybody is connecting their led to the HDD Led pins on JFP1 (Page 2-19 in the manual) they all should either work or they all should not workl. From what I gather their is no new revision of the board and only one Bios v1.1.
It also seems their was some confusion on what connector people were connecting thier led to on the motherboard.  From what I read on page 2-19 in the manual thier is only one choice on JFP1 (Top row, pins 1 & 3).

  • Is it possible to use Powershell to determine if Windows Server Source Files are present on disk?

    Hi everyone,
I would like to know if it is possible to use a Powershell cmdlet to determine if Windows Server 2012 (R2) Source Files are present on disk.
We are using an automated PS script to install roles and features and some registry keys and applications afterwards. If the Source Files are not present, the script will fail, so I would like a# Check if Source Files are present # stage built in
the script to determine if the source files are present or that an alternate source path needs to be used.
Is this possible with Powershell and if so, how can we achieve this?
    I'll appreciate your answer.
    - Rob

    Hi Rob,
I assume that you are using powershell command "install-windowsfeature" .
I would suggest you add the parameter "-source" to specify the alternate path of thesource file .
" The path specified in this parameter is only used if the command cannot find feature files in the local side-by-side store of the specified target computer or VHD. "
For details please refer to the article below :

  • Is it possible to use smartseek functionalities without FMS(flash media server)??

    Hi,
Is it possible to use smart seek functionalities to play files local files without using flash media server(FMS).
I am currently using videoDisplay components but can switch to netStream component if it is possible without FMS.
As I have to seek frame by frame but the current seek() function doesnot provide that functionality.
Any kind of suggestion is most welcome.
        Thanks in Advance.

I'd like to revive this topic as I just purchased an ATV. I do like it but I am becoming very familiar with the limitations of the ATV.
I used to have a Snyology NAS server but it did not serve/stream the iTunes well enough to my stereo. I have a lot of photos of my children as well as movies and wanted to see more of them so I purchased the ATV as I knew the Syno server/NAS would be bricking soon.
Once the ATV is loaded it is fine for that content. But if there is other content on other computers well, they have to stream and the content on the ATV is not accessible to anything other than the stereo or TV that the ATV is connected to. So, finally, here is my question:
Which NAS streams VERY WELL with the ATV? Correct me if I am wrong but the NAS has to have iTunes imbedded within the server; yes? Secondly, is the best solution for serving an ATV as well as having all media content accessible to all LAN computers a Mac Mini?
So which is it? Please recommend an NAS that can serve iTunes media (music, photos, video) to an Apple TV or is the best solution a Mac Mini which acts like a NAS and streams all media content to the Apple TV and ATV will stream it to HDTV through HDMI , etc.
The ATV is great with the High Def.., wide screen, Dolby 5.1, HDMI port , etc. Just need a way to have the media accessible to everyone on the LAN as well as serve/stream to an already purchased Apple TV.
    Thanks for the help,

  • Use Sol8 intel as install server for NetraX1. possible?

I spend several days trying to reinstall the Solaris 8 10/01 into my brand new Netra X1 server. but no luck.
this is my first and only sparc server. i'm using Solaris 8 intel as install server and install the netra drivers...
    my question is:
is it possible to using Solaris 8 intel as install server for Netra X1 net install?
I don't think i will buy one more sparc machine in this reason.
    Chris

Yes, you can use an X86 box to install Solaris Sparc to a Netra X1.
First, you must be using InfoDoc 26310 ( available on SunSolve).
In between steps 6 & 7 of that procedure you must do the following:
After applying the mis.netra-x1.259-3836-03 script you will need to add the dmfe driver to the boot image served out by your jumpstart server. This is done at the shell prompt as root. Please note that in the example below the root image is located at: /jumpstart/2.8/sparc_1001/Solaris_8/Tools/Boot
on the example server. This location will vary depending on the setup of your server. The example is used to illustrate the point that you must specify the whole path all the way to the alternate root that is served across the network to your client. The sample command line is:
    # add_drv -b /jumpstart/2.8/sparc_1001/Solaris_8/Tools/Boot -m "* 0600 root sys" -i '"pci128h,9102" "pci1282,9102" "ethernet"' dmfe
This can also be broken out using backslashes as follows:
    # add_drv -b /jumpstart/2.8/sparc_1000/Solaris_8/Tools/Boot \
    -m "* 0600 root sys" \
-i '"pci128h,9102" "pci1282,9102" "ethernet"' dmfe Note that the ">" symbols will be added as you hit return after each "\".
The above procedure must be done to each boot image you wish to install. For example, if you have a 10/2001 image and a 01/2001
image that you use for different configurations, you will need to add the dmfe driver to both .../Solaris_8/Tools/Boot directories.
Proceed with step 7 and beyond in the procedure from Info Doc 26310 to complete your installation.
