X4540 Windows RAID5 Performance

We have good performance from our X4500/X4540 hardware when running ZFS on Solaris but now have a requirement to use a couple of them for Windows directly. We have tested an X4540 with Windows 2008 x64 and various RAID5 volumes both using the storage tools native to the OS and using Veritas SFW but have very poor write performance. The sequential read performance is fine >500MB/s but 18MB/s for sequential writes on an 8 disk RAID5 volume is unacceptable when a single disk or a mirrored pair are able to sustain >60MB/s. I have been using iometer to generate the load using the same test profile I use for other storage. My suspicion is that the software RAID stack in Windows is restricting the performance as a Dell PE2850 with a 5 disk U320 software RAID 5 volume also has poorer than expected performance. Before we use our Premier contract to ask Microsoft about this I thought it was worth asking here if anyone else had experience of this? It's so bad we've thought about running Solaris on it and then Windows in VirtualBox and presenting iSCSI targets from the host to the guest.

Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone with my RAID 5 performance issue. I posted on some Microsoft Forums too but all I've had back is a recommendation to use RAID 10 which IMHO was less than helpful.
I hadn't tried the Nvidia teaming but have just configured a failover pair using two unused interfaces on a X4540 and I get a fifth interface listed with the Device Name "NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller Virtual" and it appears to operate as expected. Then I configured it as 802.3ad and it hung entirely. Not good.

  • Which versions of Window can perform best with CiscoWorks?

    Hi,
Please advice that currently we have 3200 logical devices configured on CiscoWorks and CiscoWorks is running very very slow. CiscoWorks installed on server with Windows Server 2003 32-bit and this version of windows it can only support RAM up to 4GB, which is already installed. In order to increase the RAM we have to upgrade the windows version as well.
Please advise that which versions of Window can perform best with CiscoWorks.  E.g. Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 (SP1), Standard Edition 64-bit: or Windows server 2008 etc. Please advise us the full windows release version as we will upgrade windows as per your suggestion.
We are currently using the LMS 3.2, RME 4.3.0, CM 5.2.1

Please refer to the Installation Guide for Windows server requirements. Here is the link:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/net_mgmt/ciscoworks_lan_management_solution/3.2/install/guide1/prereq.html#wp1099303
Given that you want to stay with Windows Server, Server 2008 Standard Edition with service Pack 2 would be your best choice.
NOTE that your should not (and cannot) use Server 2008 R2. That version in only supported with LMS 4.0.1. LMS 3.2 will not work with Server 2008 R2.
With a 64-bit OS, you can increase your RAM - which is usually constraining system performance on systems with 32-bit OS. I recommend just putting in 16 MB. Why skimp on $100 RAM with $20,000 software?
Your other alternative is to divide the server roles across several machines. That is a pretty complex task so I'd do the OS and RAM upgrade first and see how that helps you out.
Re "Linux" LMS 3.2 (and 4.0/4.0.1) is only supported on Windows and Solaris operating systems. Plus if you're not a Uniux admin, the learning curve can be steep for your first dip in the water.

  • ITunes on Windows 7 performance issues - slow and hangs

Is there any way to improve performance of iTunes running on Windows 7?
It has always been slow with lots of application hangs and stalls that will resolve themselves if you wait for iTunes to catch up, but I find it incredibly frustrating.
For example, when iTunes starts and if it is checking podcasts, the entire application is unresponsive until it finishes checking and refreshing podcasts.
Alternately, when viewing my iPad Air and looking at the list of apps installed via iTunes it can take 30 seconds before iTunes responds.
Considering that this is running on a system with a quad-core Haswell processor at 3.2Ghz, 16GB of RAM and Windows 7 x64 it is pretty unacceptable.
The efficiency at which iTunes operates is just appalling.  I can run Adobe Photoshop and many more memory hungry and processor intensive applications than iTunes and get better performance than what I see in iTunes.
This is not specific to my system either.  All of my family members have iPhones and their own computers and this performance issue exists on every computer I have ever run iTunes on.
Is there any way to manually tune performance because this is pretty crappy.  It's been bugging me for years, but today just kind of feels like the last straw.

I guess the answer is, "It's terribad, live with it"

  • Opening new window when performing cut, paste and delete on Audio Files

    This is 100% reproducible:
When performing one of the following actions when editing audio files (not multitrack projects), it will open a new window with the same file:
    - Cut
    - Delete
    - Paste
This happens on new files as well as opened files.
The new window looks like this:
This did not happen in SP2. Can anyone else confirm?
Message was edited by: Erik K Veland

    Hi,
Really??!! This solved it for you, your window no longer pops up when you perform an action?
Did you move the layouts to another location and then SP3 created new layout files in that default location or did you set a preference for another location? Or did you just rename the existing layout?
I am probably making this solution more complicated than it is, but those are my questions.
    Thank you, Ken

  • XServe RAID RAID5 performance?

    Hello,
I would like to know how the XServe RAID performs in RAID5.
We are using multiple FC and SCSI RAID-subsystems at work and we need a bigger one by the end of the year.
    TIA
    Best
    Nicolas

The Xserve RAID is specifically tuned for RAID 5 performance -- RAID 5 is about 99% as fast as RAID 0. Unless you were hosting a database on the RAID, and doing lots of small I/Os, there is no reason to use any other RAID scheme on Xserve RAID
    There's a performance page here:
    http://www.apple.com/xserve/raid/performance.html
With some info... not very detailed. If you can get ahold of an eval unit (Apple's direct sales force has a program for this), you can run Iozone benchmarks on one, and see how it might fit your usage pattern.

  • ITunes 7.3.2.6 and Windows Vista Performance Issues

I recently purchased an 80GB iPod, and downloaded iTunes promptly, disregarding all the negative attention about how "iTunes crashes your computer" or "iTunes kills Windows". So far, the only real problem I've had with iTunes is the amazingly poor performance it has on my computer. When iTunes is minimized to the system tray, or compressed into Mini Player mode, it runs better, but not well.
Running in the full mode, the player bogs down my computer substantially. Knowing my laptop isn't a powerhouse, I expected a slight bit of slowdown, since there is some evident with QuickTime.
UPDATE: I've just stumbled across something. Apparently, wiggling my mouse over the iTunes program, iTunes runs about two or three times faster. The moment I stop moving the mouse cursor over the window, the speeds return to slow. It seems to only do this during the "Processing Album Artwork" phase. Bizarre? Very. Any explanations?
I find this to be very annoying, especially when syncing. Syncing my library (which is about five or six gigabytes) takes an amazingly long time. Are there any workarounds, registry hacks, or anything else that can be done? Thanks!

Do you have ReadyBoost enabled on the PC? If so, by way of experiment, try disabling that as per the instructions from the following document:

    Hello Jason,
Please explain a bit about the following issues:
    1. Does this issue occur on single surface or all of them?
    2. Have you made any change before this issue?
    3. Are these surfaces domain-joined?

Hi Paul, i'd installed XP Professional for my user n so far so good. Her broadband is also working well too. when this laptop was using Win98, i had to install a driver every time i added some new hardware. Now with XP Pro there is no need, she even managed to install the new printer herself without help. The same goes with the memory stick etc.
i re-built the Tecra 8000 (192 MB RAM) from scratch (XP Pro only, bypassed Win98) so i dont know how well it'd cope with dual OSs. Bear in mind that it's not that "roomy". i just like it super "clean". btw, the installation was much simpler than Win98 (not much to add). One more thing, i don't know how well it'd cope if it had a virus checker on it (might slow down the machine considerably). I just installed Sygate Firewall version of 5.5.2577 (downloaded from http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=sygate ) without any virus checker. it's a good Firewall n she's a sensible user (i've warned her all the things not to do etc). u might like to install that firewall (n turn off any unnecessary XP services) too BEFORE u go online.

  • Windows 7 Performance vs Windows XP

I have to come to the conclusion that Windows 7 takes up a lot of memory even with an updated processor.  I have a Satellite L455D-S5976 laptop with an AMD Turion x64 2.1mHz dual core, 4gb ram, 250gb HDD.  I was running Passmark which is a benchmark program for your computer.  Now my laptop's benchark is at 474.4 compared to 1243 on the same processor.  The only difference is that the 1243 score is based on a Windows XP x86 OS not Windows 7 x86 OS.  I was looking at some specs compared to Windows 7 and it takes up a whole 1gb memory in which Windows XP takes up 64mb of memory.  I have been trying to find a way to re-format my hard drive so I can run XP to no avail.  I called Toshiba to activate my Windows 7 Downgrade Rights (this is for people that have Windows 7 and don't like the program) and they said that I can't downgrade unless I downgrade to Vista then downgrade to XP like a ladder.  I have the Windows XP x86 install disks and key but I tried to re-format my hard drive so I can just install XP directly.  When I run the command prompt I cannot seem to get the re-format going because it tells me that it needs to be dismounted so I dismount it and still doesn't let me reformat.  I go to the disk management program and the format button is not even lit.  I have came across the freeware HDDerase to see if I can reformat it that way. No go.  So I am at my end with this.  The only other option is to buy another bigger hard drive thats wiped and install Windows XP directly.  I'm not sure if my hard drive is locked or if this can be bypassed so I can format my drive.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks!

I installed the Intel beta video driver and ran a 1280 x 720 mkv file and plays without stuttering. That takes care of the video problem but doesn't fix the other problems that need drivers such as the camera. I also noticed that if I plug in my ethernet cable, Windows 7 doesn't automatically switch from wireless as XP does. To use ethernet, I have to disable the wireless in Device Manager. Hopefully Toshiba will be posting the rest of the software and drivers to make Windows 7 able to do all of the same things that XP is able to do.

  • Windows 7 icons disappear/reappear Green Progress folder bar issues with slow performance. HELP!!!

Hi there, I hope someone can help me. This all started about a week ago. So I tried a fresh reinstall from my recovery disk. to no avail. Ok I have Home Premium 64bit and it seems my icons in my user folders and subfolders and the actual file icons are
blank stand ard or missing. after a while they reappear to normal. the green progress bar in the explorer folders always lags and never fully completes. It hangs. Now I see that it takes 30 secs to get a program to open. Currently my control panel screen is
blank and my connection between my ipod touch 5g and my desktop is very slow at data transfer. I'm going bonkers! The only things I altered was turning off WMM in my router, Installed a software someone gave me (only to find out it was a crack software) deleted
that first! and used CCleaner to clean my registry

    Hi,
So a total reinstall didn’t fix the issue?
We may take a try with the following article to make Windows a better performance.

Then, please check to see if any new updates available, also the related drivers, make sure they are up-to-date.
After that, if issue insists, please refer to the following article to run chkdsk command in CMD to check if there are disk issue.

  • When I perform a Google search, loner windows also go to the google search term site.

Sometimes when I am browsing, I click on a link that opens a new window. So far, so good. Then I may go back to the main browser window and perform a Google search. The little extra window changes to the address for the search term, right along with the tab where I was actually performing the search. Sometimes this lone window is a site I need to keep open. I went into options but cannot find a solution.

    Please do the following.<br><br>
#In the location bar, type '''about:config''' and hit Enter.<br><br>
#In the filter at the top, type: '''keyword.URL'''<br><br>
#Double click it and remove whatever's in there and replace it with http://www.google.com/search?q= and then click OK.<br><br>
    #Close the tab
The URL to add in "keyword.URL" becomes a link in this post, so right click it and choose "Copy Link Location" to copy it to the Windows clipboard. Then hit CTRL+V to paste it. Saves you having to type the whole thing.
'''To reset your home page, do the following'''.<br><br>
    * Go to the site you want to set as your homepage.<br><br>
    * Click the Firefox button, go to '''Options '''| '''Options '''| '''General'''.<br><br>
    * Make sure it says "''Show My Homepage''" in the first dropdown menu.<br><br>
    * Click the button called "'''Use Current Pages'''" to set the homepage to the one you have on the screen.<br>
N.B. Some of your plugins are out of date which exposes your system to attack. Please visit the [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck/ Plugins Check] page and update where necessary.
Also, click '''Help '''| '''Check For Updates''' to update Firefox to 3.6.19

  • Performance issue when put weblogic in Windows service

I am running a performance test on our application which sits on top of bea weblogic server 7.0sp2, I found out when I run the server as windows service, performance is much worse than I run it in command prompt. any thoughts ?
    btw, I am running W2K SP4 server, 4G MEM, 4 CPUSs

It's hard to tell without more information, but my first suggestion
would be to double-check that the same parameters/config are being used
    in both cases.
Any idea what part of your app is taking more time?

  • LabVIEW 6.1 crash on Windows 98 while performing data acquisition

I've just updated my system from LabVIEW 6.02 to 6.1 on my notebook (DELL Latitude CPi-A). Since then, I have a lot of trouble to perform data acquistion.
In debug mode, it appeared that it performed well the first acquisition (AI-config _ AI-start _ AI-read _ AI-close). And then it crashes the computer at the second loop : have to hard-reboot.
    Any clue before I re-install LabVIEW 6.02 ????
    Thanks,
    Cyrille

    Thank for your answer.
Actually, I'm sure (99%) that Ni-DAQ works well, because the test panel works fine. And through LabVIEW, it made the first acquisition in debug mode.
Today, I came back with fresh mind and follow some "common issues" with graphic acceleration.
So, I turned off the graphic acceleration from the windows system performance. And since then, everything seems to work well.
But I would suggest to NI to look a bit deeper on those graphic acceleration compatibility issues because it is not the first time I have to turn off this MS windows feature. In previous cases, the error came when I was modifying a XY graph.
