X505 Q880 Black screen auto-restarts in Game

Hi everyone! I got this laptop X505 Q880 a couple of months ago and it was all wonderfully working fine until a week ago where it randomly restarts during a game. No warnings.. Nothing.. Just goes to a black screen and restarts with the unexpected shut down error after the restart. I have looked everywhere on the forums and I see a lot of "similar" problems with different "solutions" posted. Even though I haven't found anything on this particular model (the X505 Q880) I have tried many ways of fixing it but to no avail. I have guessed it's a big problem for many and it seems that even different models have this problem.
It restarts by it self without any warnings. Like some posts it doesn't have any error messages... I don't need to press the power button (as it turns back on) It restarts in 5 mins in to all the games I play. It only restarts when it's plugged in the AC. When I play on battery power it will run perfectly fine until it drains the battery power. I hear it's a problem with the graphics card, or it's the motherboard, or it's a driver problem, or something to do with the AC adaptor.
But which one is the real the problem??!?! And is there anyway I can fix it myself? Because I have just moved across the sea to a whole new country where I can't contact the Toshiba Customer Services.. And this cost me more than my plane tickets.... And I can't afford to buy another one...
Someone please advise me, and hopefully there is a solution out there somewhere... That actually works...
Kind regards,
Lui

Take a look at this topic
There is more people having same problem.
Aziz
Yeah I see, it's good to know I'm not the only one.... Muahahaha...
Nah, it's not funny. What a waste of money....At least money can be replaced...
But what f***** waste of precious time...
I've arranged to repair it tomorrow at a repair service place here in London recommended by the Toshiba guys here. Even though I bought it in the States it has a Limited International Warranty so should be good. Will post up after the repair and hopefully find a solution for others IF they can fix it that is. Fingers crossed.
Otherwise any new breaking news? Solutions? Or anything? Anyone?
Is there actually someone who has X505 Q880 that still works fine? I wonder....

  • Windows 2008 R2 Failover Cluster - Netapp FAS6280 Black Screen on Restart when in cluster IGROUP

    Hello everyone,
I've been working on this issue for a month now and have tickets open with Netapp and Microsoft.  We have not been able to resolve the issue as of yet and since I'm losing all my hair I thought I should post it...
    Scenario:
    Two Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise SP Fail-Over Clusters (C1 & C2)
Two Netapp FAS6280 Filers for SAN storage
    8 DELL R815 servers w/ 2x QLE2562 8GB FC HBAs all paths used (9.1.9.47 - newer did not resolve)
Netapp DSM 4.0 & SnapManager 6.4.2 (we also tried 1 rev newer, 1 rev older without luck)
    C1 has 2 nodes & C2 has 4 nodes.
We are trying to add new nodes into the clusters.  We were originally on EMC Clariion arrays and have been migrated to the netapp.  Prior to moving we had 3 nodes in C2 and added node 4.
Now we want to add 2 more nodes, one to each cluster.  We were able to configure the OS and get everything installed and matching the other nodes.  we can assign HBAs to a test IGROUP and assign a lun, format it use it restart all is well and normal.
As soon as we change the HBAs to the IGROUP for C1 or C2's LUNs the servers don't want to restart properly.  They hang at a black screen.  The little green windows start splash screen runs the bar at the bottom.  it then is supposed to fade
out and come back with the grey screen saying starting windows but that doesn't always happen.  Sometimes it can take 4 hours to restart, or the machine will not come back onine at all.  The pre-existing nodes *do not* experience this issue.
They restart in 5-10 minutes without issue.
We know drivers are part of the issue, but the maddening part is that it all works fine until we try to add the HBAs to the existing cluster storage group.  We have a suggestion to create separate IGROUPs for each cluster node and add all luns to the
separate igroups.  We configured this on one node and it still restarts long.  We plan to modify the other nodes during our maintenance window and try again.
On the other cluster we were able to successfully complete the validate wizard and join.  everything fails over and works except the server does not come up upon restart.  If I unplug the HBAs it will come up fine, then I can plug them in and the
    cluster functions.
Does anyone have any other ideas for us to try?  Currently support for both netapp and Microsoft appear stumped.  Sunday is our Window and we plan to try reconfiguring but I'm losing optimism...
    Thanks for any feedback/ideas!
    -Ryan

Thanks everyone who looked at this and offered feedback.
The issue appears to be resolved after the configuration change suggested by Netapp support.
The originally recommended configuration for our storage migration was similar to how I've seen storage groups configured on EMC arrays in the past.  1 storage group / igroup with all hbas/initiators for each host in the WFC/SQL cluster added to this
group.  that group then gets all LUNs assigned to it.
The change in configuration that was recommended is to have 1 storage group / igroup for each host and put all initiators/hbas for each host in their own separate group.  Then assign the all LUNs to each of the individual host igroups.
There is a lack of documentation on this, but it appears to work.  We had 1 hit for separate igroups but had to go through a couple of support techs to get one to confirm this.
After applying this configuration in our change window today the issue is resolved.  we were able to fail all resources onto the new node and restart it without issue.  The question remaining for us is why the old systems continued to work while
the new nodes did not.  The old nodes were originally migrated off an EMC and the version of ONTapp at that time was 8.1.2 and they worked fine.
We had upgraded to 8.1.3 to resolve an issue with flash cache and it seems like machines that we tried to attach to this igroup after that time did not work.  all drivers software etc the same.  We are wondering if this is somehow related and have
    asked about it.
I wanted to update this thread, and perhaps it can save someone else some trouble down the line.

  • Qosmio: X505-Q890 Black Screen BUT Computer has not crashed

I have a Qosmio: X505-Q890, my screen goes black after a few minutes.  But if you look at it on an angle you can see screen and mouse moving around.  I am assuming that the backlights are going out on screen.  What is the fix.  I am capabale of dissasembling laptop and repairing.  What parts do I need to fix?
    Thanks
    Greg

It could be either the inverter or the backlight, but it's hard to know for sure. It could also be a loose cable, but that seems less likely to me (although it might be easier to check).

  • Update=black screen on restart

Did software update this AM (daylight savings, java, quicktime & security update) everything seemed fine. Clicked on restart as required - now I only get a black screen that says:
    Darwin/BSD (G4-GM.local) (console)
    Login:
I've entered the administrator name & password and
no home directory and something else
briefly appear, a blue screen shows then back to black as above.
I'm guessing that the home directory was renamed? but don't know how to get past this black screen! I don't have a 10.3 Install disk (bought computer used) but have a 10.4 Install set from my imac at home. Can I do anything? It's the boss's computer that's screwed!

    Betsy:
Michael Conniff has worked on a number of these situations. Here is a list of recent posts from Michael. Hopefully you will be able to find help in them.
When I had a similar issue a while ago I ended up having to do a complete reinstall. Here's a link to that thread.
Let me know if anything works.
    Good luck.

  • Compaq Presario SR1330NX desktop. Black screen after restarting after recovery using disks

My Compaq presario SR1330NX desktop computer which has XP. Years ago I accidentally deleted the recovery partition. I ordered the recovery disks. I have done successful recoveries with them. Although it has been years. I did a recovery from disk. I dont think I did it correctly as it had been a while. Anyway, It never asked me for the 2nd disk, but it said the recovery was successful and to restart the computer. I thought that maybe it had made its own new recovery partition when using the disks before. So I restarted the computer and all I get is a black screen with compaq on it and some weird symbols in the left upper corner that look like
    >triangle,Divide sign,Square,upside down t with a line under it,zero and a weird looking capital B".
And it does NOTHING. I put disks in it does nothing. This is the only screen that comes up and nothing else works. What did I do? and How can I fix this?

Hello tinkyferret, The HP Recovery Restore disk set makes a new Recovery Partition when they are used to recover the system.
You might try the HP Recovery Restore procedure from the hard drive, if you have not, and see if it wil complete successfully.
Normally on a Compaq system, you press the F-10 key to enter the Recovery Restore utility.

  • [urgent] Help! iBook AirPort connect, Black Screen (force restart) out!

I just have this D-Link DIR-300 wireless router setup by PC. And i connect it to my MacPro, my friends iBook G4 and even Windows. It works perfectly.
But, once i turn on my iBook G4 airport to connect, it display the "Black Screen" and ask me to hold power button. I've doing this for few times. I have no idea.
Please let me know how do i fix this problem.

If you upgraded the RAM, and issues result, you'd remove the RAM
and see if the issues go away after a restart. More may be needed if
the system still is confused by the changes in RAM. A reset of the
PRAM may be necessary after changing around RAM chips.
Also, in the process of upgrading and installing new software updates
and stuff, it is wise to use Disk Utility's "repair disk permissions" before
and after each set of updates. And you need not install all the list of stuff
that Software Updates automatically provides; some later if at all.
I recommend from experience, to get and use the freeware utility OnyX
from Titanium Software; it runs nice enough and the default Automation
tabbed selection of checkboxes can help clear caches and do the stuff
many people forget about. I run it a few times a month; and after installs.
For simplicity, mostly use the Mac's Disk Utility>repair disk permissions.
Your computer's bootable install disc #1 includes an Apple
Hardware Test, if started up with the Option key held; and
also can access an on-disc Disk Utility in the Installer by
starting up from the disc with the c - key held down until
the Installer appears; see menu dropdown when you click
the Installer's name in menubar to be able to use Disk Utility.
When you get to the most recent/last software update that is a security
update, you may need to hold off on that one; several users of some
models have found problems with it. Perhaps just a few Intel - chipped
models, but also a few PPC chipped Mac models. I avoided the last
Security Update 2006-008 (PPC) due to some issues; in my 10.4.8 Mac.
PS: you can't generally just copy/paste songs between computers
and you may need to read a few Apple Support documents on
how to handle moving iTunes music folders to avoid issues. And
there is a legal matter in how one shares music, and who owns it.

  • MBP Black Screen on restart after software update

Hello to all, Just after dowloading today's latest updates, iTunes, Safari, something about file exchanges and Apple remote I beleive, there needed to restart and once done, no chime and black screen...
All was perfectly fine just before, and I did backup beforehand.
Tried to reset PRAM, restart in Single user, Safe mode, Installation Disk, all with no success.
I will let it powered off and let it cool down for a while if it can help, but it was not particularly hot when restarted.
    Any other suggestions ??
    Many thanks !!

I'm having basically the same problem with my PowerBook 1Ghz Aluminum 17". After running the latest security update and latest iLife patches using SU, my system boots to the local Darwin consol login. I can see my HD and all it's files, but I can't get the machine to boot back into GUI mode. Safe mode doesn't work.
This was a newly refreshed system running 10.4.6 and ONLY iLife installed - nothing funky and no 3rd-party apps other than those pre-installed in 10.4.x.
I've booted with the 10.4 DVD, repaired permissions (again) and repaired the drive (reported not needed). Zapping the PRAM doesn't help.
Perhaps I have a lemon because I have had problems with this machine in the past, but only when installing major system updates between 10.3-10.4 with non-apple RAM. I don't think this is the culprit this time as the machine has been functioning fine since the last fresh 10.4 install (with some OWC RAM).
Any ideas? Anyone have tips for what can be done in the console to repair the system?

  • Qosmio X500 - Black screen crash when loading games, requiring reboot

I have a brand new Qosmio X500 (PQX33A-00X00J) with all the original drivers as they came out the box, and 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium OS. The only thing I've done on this laptop is install games. The laptop runs fine for most things, and for a very few games (Unreal Tournament 2007 is the only one so far), but almost all games crash with a black screen the first time they're run. Sometimes I'll see a splash screen the first time, and once or twice I've got to a start screen, but thereafter the screen goes completely black, no sound, and the machine freezes requiring a reboot.
It's extremely frustrating, considering this is a brand new, out of the box gaming laptop, and I haven't changed any drivers or anything. It's running an Nvidia Geforce GTS 250M display card, and the native resolution for the LCD screen is 1920x1080. I suspect it may have something to do with the unusual native screen resolution or the aspect ratio, because I managed to get one game to run (FEAR) by going into the supplied config utility and setting the game's default screen resolution to 1024x768. FEAR has the same crash if set to a higher resolution.
    The games I've tried:
Unreal Tournament 2007 - runs perfectly at all resolutions
Half Life 2 - crashes on launch with black screen, no sound, requiring reboot.
Counter Strike - the 1st time I managed to the setup screen, changed screen resolution, it crashed immediately. Thereafter it crashes straight away on launch, I can't even get to the setup screen. Uninstalled, reinstalled, same thing, crashes on launch with black screen, requiring reboot.
Bioshock - only ever got a "Bioshock" logo, then crashes with black screen, requiring reboot.
Frontlines - Fuel of War - crashes on launch with blank screen, requiring reboot.
Call Of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare - crashes immediately on loading with black screen, requiring reboot.
Crysis - crashes immediately on loading with black screen, requiring a reboot.
Except for UT 2007, almost every game has just crashed the first time it's been run, I usually don't even get a 1st shot at trying to change any settings. I've tried loading the games that provide a safe mode in that (e.g. Modern Warfare), but the same thing happens. I've also tried setting the laptop resolution to 1024x768 before running the games, but no difference. I've also made sure I'm running the latest patched version of the games, and I've checked the Toshiba website, but there are no driver updates so far that I can find for this laptop either.
I'm completely pulling my hair out, and solving this is very time consuming, because every time I try anything I have to reboot before I can try something else. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Someone suggested I try turning off my antivirus, and it turns out that was the problem. It seems Comodo has compatibility problems with games in Windows 64-bit editions since one of their latest releases.

  • My MacBook turn out black screen after restart.

When I restart my MacBook Pro it turn out black scene. At first I can see the apple loading screen and after it turn black after load. So I tried to click on the keyboard the cap lock can be turn on/off and the volume still have sound. I tried to hold the power button for 10 second to see if I restart will i have to same problem but unfortunate it turn out the same. So I try to hold shift control option and power key to turn it off and later turn it on again. But the result is the same... I even uses a touch to shine on the monitor to see is the light problem or not, but I see nothing. Can anyone please help me out.thank you!

I don't know if it's something to worry about per se, but it might be a sign your computer isn't happy. If it's been a while, I would:
    - boot up from OS X install disc (shut down the computer and then hold down the C key to make it start from Install disc) then run Disk Utility. Select your hard disk and then select Repair Disk.
It might find/fix the software related problem that is mucking up your computer.
If it starts up normally afterwards, I'd then run "Repair Disk Permissions" from Disk Utility as well (from the macbook is fine - you don't need to restart from the Install disc for Permissions repair).
If everything checks out, and you're still having problems, it might be hardware related, but I'd run Disk Utility first and see if that helps.
Reset the Ram/Pram:: Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
Try these and post back, I'll do more research and figure this out, promise.\

  • Bootcamp issue, removed windows, still gives black screen on restarting

I made a mistake of trying to install windows on my mac (just because netflix does not support OS X :(). The installation of windows was not succesful (it gave up in a few seconds, probably the CD had a problem). So I used BootCamp assistant and used the remove partition and windows option.
Now everytime I restart the mac, it tries to boot up in windows and gives me that black windows screen you get when you install windows (no disk found etc). It seems everything from Windows has not been removed. THe only way to boot into OS X is now to use the option key, but I would like to get rid of this problem since I don't even have windows.
    Any hints?
    Thanks

Go into system prefs and see which disk you have selected as the start up disk.

  • PPC-iMac: Black screen on restart after Security Update 2006-003

Did the Security Update 2006-003 this morning. On restart the screen is showing the grey Apple-logo for several seconds. Then it goes black, with the prompt in the upper left corner: "localhost/root:" Vent running in high gear. Entering unix-commands is possible, but no graphic interface coming up. How to fix this? Don't want to reinstall the whole system.

  • Sudden black screen and restart with mid 2010 15" MBP

My MBP from April 2010 have recently started shutting down mid-sessions. The screen goes black and the computer reboots. I've read that this model have had some issue with the graphic card. One funny (?) thing is that the problem more or less only occurs when I'm using Pro Tools (music software). I formatted the computer yesterday and installed a fresh Mountain Lion, but to no avail. The crash logg is below, hope anyone can shed any light!

  • Thunderbolt black screen after restart?!

Yesterday my phone decided to keep turning the ringer volume down by itself so I did a restart and now the display will not come on.  I can hear sounds such as the thunder in the start up and calls coming in, even the back lit home and menu keys light up.
I did remove the battery, but nothing.  Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Oh my KMullins! A battery pull would have been where I started too, but I'm sure it was disappointing that it didn't end up helping. Since there's definitely power to the device, that's good. One thing that I've come across that will cause the device to malfunction the way you've described is physical or liquid damage.
If there hasn't been anything like that that's happened, try starting with your phone powered down and then pressing & holding the volume down & power key for ~10 seconds. If the screen comes on with the Hboot screen, that's great! That means you can stop here and pull your battery and the phone will boot up normally. If you're still having trouble, follow me (JenniferH_VZW) and send me a direct message so we can talk about your replacement options.
