X58 Eclipse Jmicron Raid

MSI x58 Eclipse SLI  BIOS Version 1.2
Intel i7 920 2.66
12 gigs OCZ 1600 OCZ3G1600LV6GK
2x WD VR 150
3x WD 750 Caviar Black
Thermaltake W0116RU 750W PS

Thermaltake Speedo VI90001N2Z Case
Building a new system and have been pretty happy so far except I am unable to get into the JMicron raid utility to set up the Raid. The user manual says to press Ctrl-J to enter set up for the Jmicron controller but it does not work. Bios sees the 2 drives and I have their type set as Raid 0 and the Bios reflects that, but during post I am unable to access the Raid controller in order to configure the 2 drives.
The Intel utility is fine. I selected Ctrl-I during post and I was able to select my 3 750 and create the array. I just want to do the same with the 2 WD 150 Raptors. Am I just missing something?
Any suggestions??
Thanks

It means i am not having a problem loading the drivers in Windows. It is not a Windows issue. The problem is if you wish it install the OS on a RAID you must set the raid up first then when you install Windows you tell windows what drivers to us with that Raid array.
To summarize i need to know how to get into the Jmicron Raid Controller buring the bios post so i can set up the array.

  • Two questions re: X58 Eclipse SLI

    Hi all -
two questions regarding my (admittedly older) X58 Eclipse SLI:
1.) When I built the system, I had two IDE DVD devices: one reader and one burner.  I've since replaced the burner with a SATA burner but now I can't get Vista 64 to recognize the reader.  I have the reader setup as 'Master' on the IDE bus and it does get identified when booting the system.  Vista won't see it, though, even with the JMicron drivers installed.
2.) When I bought the board, I also bought an OCZ 1600 DDR3 kit (OCZ model# OCZ3P1600LV6GK).  I FINALLY got the RAM stable at 1333MHz, but I've considered adding more RAM to the system.  Am I likely to experience issues if all the RAM is not matched - especially considering I've had to customize the RAM voltage and timings?
any suggestions here would be greatly appreciated!
    Mike

It may be possibe that a firmware update is available from the device manufacturer that will make the drive compatible with Vista?
Possible, however I doubt that's the issue considering that the drive functioned normally prior to the removal of the 2nd (SLAVE) drive.  To clarify, when both drives were attached to the PATA controller everything worked fine.  When I went to a single drive, the OS no longer recognizes the MASTER device.

    Hello ,

Today i just replaced  the 2xTR3X6G1600C9  with CMP12GX3M3A1600C9(corsair) enabled the  XMP profile , everything was looking good all 12gb were working , but after some time i got blue screen and restart :(, so i bet this has to do with options and propably i have to do more than to enable XMP profile in order to make it stable. So any suggetions ? Yes i m totally noob from knowledge in bios only i know is to enable XMP but i m looking forward to learn stuff from ya guys and considering that i might just lost about 230e in order to upgrade ram and i can't make  to work 12gb stable in 1600hz i should of ask much earlier!

If you turn EIST off you should be able to put the multiplier to a specific number between 12 and 21 (or higher if you have an unlocked Extreme CPU) and that is where it will stay.
I believe that is exactly what i did, i disabled EIST, C1E and set multiplier to 21, however, when i run a stability test(Prime95 or Linx) it always drops the multiplier down from 21x to 20x.
It seems to me turbo mode is still working when it is supposed to be disabled when you set multiplier to 21(or maybe it is just simply won't allow x21 multiplier to be used at full load anyway, turbo mode on or off).

Very good point Jack. There you go ravescar & others, give that a try & see if it makes a difference. smile
I experimented a bit with Overspeed Protection enabled and disabled, however i did not notice any difference in this regard, the multiplier still drops to 20 on high load for me.
However this problem do not happen if i set multiplier to 20, it is only the 21 multiplier that have this issue.
    This is on a MSI X58 Eclipse SLI Motherboard + i7 920 D0 stepping + 6gb GSKILL Trident 16000 CL9 RAM.

BTW. I've read of a couple of cases where DO stepping 920's getting 22x with Turbo enabled but I'll remain skeptical regarding the validity.
Maybe it is just earlier version of cpu-z mis-reporting multiplier?

  • MSI X58 Platinum SLI RAID Issues

I recently bought another 300GB WD VelociRaptor and I am trying to set up a RAID 0 array through the BIOS using the JMicron controller. (sata7 and 8) I have set it up in the bios through the DriveBooster Manager or whatever and selected RAID 0.  Windows setup detects a 600gb stripe but will not let me install due to drivers.  I have put the JMicron drivers on my flash drive and they dont seem to work.  Any insight on this?
EDIT: strangely enough I unplugged my drives and reseated the connections and in windows setup I didnt get any errors; it didnt even ask for a driver but I installed them anyway.  I remember reading somewhere that if a SATA cable is bent in several ways it might cause problems like this.

SATA cables should never be bent sharply.  Use rounded bends that don't exert much pressure at the turn.

IF your IOH Temps are INSANELY HOT like mine (up to 110-127 C!!), there might be something wrong with your Heatsink (the giant two-sided one with the copper pipe).  Those plastic pushpins don't seem to hold the heatsink firmly to the two chips (I'm not sure which one is the IOH yet).  Anyway, I tried using pushpins from other boards and using arctic silver thermal paste - no difference.  BIOS 1.1 - no difference.
Finally, I decided to get a little bold and try using some screws to literally screw the heatsink down thru the existing holes into the MB - WARNING do this at your own risk!!  I found some screws that were the diameter of the 4 holes on the heatpipe from the leftover screws that came from my antec case.  I cleaned off the old heatsink material (lots of elbow grease, or rubbing alcohol, q-tips and patience.  I put everything together and now it makes a nice solid contact to the MB.  Be careful not to overtorque - you basically want to fasten it down solid to ensure no movement.
Guess what? The IOH temps are better now !!
    CPU 31C
    Sys 47C
IOH 86-93C (93 using cooling settings in MSI Overclock tool; 84 using default cooling settings = much improvement from 110-127C!!!)

  • Jmicron RAID 1 problem

(I made this topic a while ago in the newbie corner, but after this post there were no answers so I thought that this may be a better place to ask this question)
So I gave it another futile try installing arch. This time I used the iso image Froscon and the new problems started when I was about to partition the hard drive.
Maybe the problem is that I have 4 primary partitions from Windows Vista taking 200GB space of my 500 GB disk, but really I want to have arch, I can't live without it;)
So here we have the ls -la /dev/mapper
    Code:
    ls -la /dev/mapper
    total 0
    drwxr-xr-x  2 root root       0 2008-09-02 19:27 .
    drwxr-xr-x 18 root root       0 2008-09-02 19:27 ..

    brw-------  1 root disk 254,  4 2008-09-02 19:27 jmicron_JRAID5
and here we have the dmraid -tay
    Code:
    dmraid -tay
    jmicron_JRAID: 0 976748544 mirror core 2 131072 nosync 2 /dev/sda 0 /dev/sdb 0

    jmicron_JRAID5: 0 131072000 linear /dev/mapper/jmicron_JRAID 309252096
I went to partition the hard drive, just as the guide said, I chose other and made a couple of tries:
    first
    /dev/mapper/jmicron_JRAID
    and it returned me
    Code:
FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 3: Partition ends in the final cylinder
when I tried adding any number on the end 1,2,3,5 it returned me
    Code:
FATAL ERROR: Bad primary partition 0: Partition ends after end-of-disk
And when I tried to write
    /dev/mapper/jmicron_JRAID*
it didn't even enter cfdisk, so what should I do now?
I'm looking forward to your reply.

  • Another jmicron raid problem

    Hi,
I've got arch64 and two 500GB hard drives connected in a jmicron jraid 1. Well everything's been dandy until an update I think a few weeks ago. Yeah I know I'm writing a bit late but now I have the time to attend to the problem.  So my hard drives were named like this jmicron_JRAIDx where x is the number of the partition.
    my grub.conf looks like this
    (0) Arch Linux
    title Arch Linux [/boot/vmlinuz26]
    root (hd0,1)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/mapper/jmicron_JRAID2 ro nopal
    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
    # (1) Windows
    title Windows
    rootnoverify (hd0,0)
    makeactive
    chainloader +1
So windows runs smoothly, but linux is trying to start up and writes that he cannot find jmicron_JRAID2 . That was a bit worrying, but I noticed that he sees jmicron_JRAIDp2 while trying to boot, so I changed it in grub conf and the kernel started booting. It failed on mounting the hard drives saying that I've got bad blocks or sth like that on jmicron_JRAID2 partition and that I have to fix it manually. So can anyone tell me what the hell is going on? Please;)

Thanks for the response Tiresmoke. No, they're different manufacturers. 1 is seagate. 1 is samsung. Anyway it works on ports 1/2 whereas i was trying 3/4 before... a new motherboard is needed me thinks.

  • X58 Pro and Raid 0, I would like some help if possible.

    Hi,
I'm currently waiting on my SSD's that I want to use in a raid 0 configuration, but I'm a complete newbie when it comes to running raid on these things.
Currently I have HDD's and DVD on SATA contact 1, 2 and 3.
    My BIOS version is 7.3.
I'm planning on installing Windows 7 64-bit on the Raid 0 configuration.
Can someone give me a step by step instruction on how to setup a Raid 0 with 2x SSD?
I would be very thankful for any help.

    Registry tweak for what?
Error message when you start a Windows 7 or Windows Vista-based computer after you change the SATA mode of the boot drive: "STOP 0x0000007B INACCESSABLE_BOOT_DEVICE"
This >> registry tweak << is required if you install Windows without setting the RAID mode to ACHI first as follows:
This issue occurs if the disk driver (MSACHI) in Windows 7 and Windows Vista is disabled. This driver must be enabled before you change the SATA/RAID mode of the boot drive. To resolve this issue, enable the AHCI driver in the registry before you change the SATA mode of the boot drive. To do this, follow these steps:
    Start REGEDIT.
Locate and then click one of the following registry subkeys:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\IastorV
In the right pane, right-click Start in the Name column, and then click Modify.
In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.
On the File menu, click Exit to close Registry Editor.
    Reboot and load the BIOS.
Change the RAID value to ACHI.
    Finally, reboot.

I got a reply from MSI support to use RAID option in BIOS and Windows 7 installed without any problems.
Sorry I went off on a tangent, I failed to remember that you are installing this for RAID, if you were using the SSD's in non-RAID mode, you'd use ACHI.

Thnx VERY much for the input...
the reason i wanted to flash my bios is because of some sound driver issue I got..

Don't think the hang issue has to do with flashing bios if u flash it correctly, most likely has to do with instability OC. I assume now all goes well after you reset the switch?

  • MSI X58 Eclipse Plus Core i7 cannot underclock overclock

Hi, wonder if anyone has the same problem I do, I'm running a Core i7 920 @ 4110 Mhz, everything is running well except for 1 thing, I cannot clock my system back to 3.9Ghz or 3.8 or 3.7 or just even 4.0, I can however clock back to factory defaults, any ideas? I've tried everything from voltages to speedstep to Dram configs and so on.
Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

HI HU16E, thanks for the input, yes I'm OC'ing manually, I don't like the OC dail function so much, in the mean time I've tried a few things and this is what I came up with, spread spectrum is disabled.
Core voltage is 1.208, Dram @ 1.64, EIST is enabled for now and so is Intel turbo boost tech.
I reverted back to defualt/factory settings and started moving my base clock up 100Mhz at a time, after each setting I run Everest stress test for 20 min. and then move on to the next, I started at 3000Mhz and moved my way up.
I got everything running stable up until 3600Mhz, now I've tried booting @ 3700Mhz and no luck, if I push my clock to 4100Mhz with a 20x multiplier it boots fine no problem, but now I've got a new problem, if I stress my FPU @ 4100Mhz it crashes. All i wanted to do is to lower my base clock to have less stress on the CPU, @ 4100Mhz my core temp. is @ 69 degrees.
I can however push my CPU clock to 4300Mhz no problem, but I don't need it that high, if I can just run @ 3900Mhz it would be perfect. My reason for trying to get my clock speed down is that the board and CPU as you know is expensive and I just want to save it a little by running @ a lower clock speed.
Any idea what the max core voltage is for the core i7 920?
Thanks for the input, I will double check my settings now again.
