X58 Pro-E w/ GTX 580 SLI

I am trying to figure out on the X58 Pro-E which of the three main PCIe slots are the two x16 ones...
On every site I look at it says something different.  Some says it's x16/x16/x4  others say x16/x8/x16  and another site says x16/x16/x8.  I have already been searching like crazy online and I am trying to SLI my GTX 580s and I do not want to put my second card in the x4 slot or x8.  Thanks for any help you can give

Glad you found it. I was just about to suggest you download the full user manual here. http://www.msi.com/product/mb/X58-Pro-E.html#/?div=Manual

  • GTX 580 (SLI) not stable?

    My system: nl.hardware.info/usersystemen/8733/sandy-bridge-gamesysteem
I bought them (the cards) a liltle over 3 years ago 2nd hand (basicly brand new from a OC guy upgrading). I had some problems getting them stable but the last 3 years it went smoothly.
Now I replaced my motherboard last week (and added a SSD and some more HD and ram at the same time) and I have the same problem again. Which I think is due to the reset of settings of the cards.
So far it only happened during games (SC2, PvZ Garden Warefare and Dota 2). The pc locks up basicly and I get a black screen, as in the monitor goes off and then blinks like a off monitor does, the fan goes up and I have to reset the pc. Then in windows I get a blue screen error box.
I already did memtest which ran 3,5 times without errors. Turned off SLI and still crashed 1-2  times.
I also have 3DMark where sometimes it goes through and sometimes well not.
Using MSI Afterburner to try to find some stable settings but I can't seem to get it working (again). I'm no expert by any means so I could use some help/suggestions. I have heard that the MSI cards have to low voltage standard out of the box. I tried upping that but even with standard GTX settings (not this standard OC) I cant get it stable.
My windows and drivers (Nvid 337.88) are all new and should be working fine.  Guess I should have RMA'ed them the first time but somehow they got stable and the last 3 years I've had no problems. Not sure how MSI handles situtions like this where even after a long time they show leniency and offer some kind of trade in or upgrade like some companies (not just GPU card ones).
Anything I need to provide (can't add dxdiag?) or test or settings to doublecheck/update or tips on how to best get them stable again?

Might be that the new motherboard doesn't support old vBIOS of the GPUs.
Please add their Serial Numbers (both) but also make backup of BOTH vBIOSes and upload them to some free file hosting service and give us a link to the file.

  • MSI GTX 580 Lightning + Asrock Z68 Pro 3 Issue

    Hi!
I just bought a new computer with gtx 580 lightning and asrock z68 pro 3 motherboard. I am having issues with the pci-e slot and the graphics card. My motherboard doesnt recognize the card. I have updated my MB bios to newest one but it didn't help. I also tried the lightning in my old gaming rig and it worked fine there. Also tried my old graphics card in my new rig and worked just fine. Power wise I should be fine because my old rig has 600w power supply and it worked, new rig has 50 wats more and is more quality PSU.
Also the red and green leds on the gtx 580 lightning are on and fans are spinning but when I try to attach the monitor it just doesnt give anything out.
I am really running out of options here and dunno what to do. I have the intel i5 2500k processor so I can use the onboard graphics to prowse the web. Also managed to install win7 64bit and MB drivers.
Anyone having this same issue ? Or any solutions to my problem? Would be nice to get my rig up and running fully.
    Thanks!

AsRock already tested the combination and it works:
    http://forums.tweaktown.com/asrock/45683-asrock-z68-pro-3-msi-gtx-580-lightning-issue.html
Maybe the motherboard has broken PCI-e slots, as Asrock suggested, goto a dealer and check it out with them.
The combination is not a problem, but if a PCI-e slot is broken it can explain all of this.
As the card works in other systems, it's hardly possible it's the card, else it would fail too.
And yes, because an ATI card works it doesn't mean the PCI-e slot is good, have seen such before.
He replaced the board with new one Asus P8P67 Pro and still doesn't works on-board led shows VGA init error.
So 2 different brand new boards with broken slots is very unlikely. [both of them worked fine with different video cards]
The MSI's GTX 580 Lightning worked fine in meantime with the same PSU [he also tested with different one and it works fine with both PSU's on 3th board] on 3th different mainboard.
It's some kind of compatibility issue [based on all facts]

They test it but not with the same card Lightning card, they used reference card instead [MSI N580GTX-M2D15D5].
The VBIOS structure of the non reference design used on Lightning cards are very different compared to regular versions,
as well the card itself compared to reference one.

  • MSI x58 Pro and Quad SLI

OK I am new to this forum first off. So hey! lol. Now maybe this has been discussed.... well im sure it might have been but I thought I would get a direct answer from somebody. I have the Msi x58 Pro mobo and I planning to run QUAD SLI with GTX 295's. Now my BIOS version is the oldest.... I think 7.0 which doesnt support SLI right? and I have read that MSI motherboards now supports SLI. WIll this configuration work and should I update my BIOS to the most current version??

Yes, update with the 8 series bios. That will enable SLI. Please, be sure to use the forum USB Flash Tool for the bios update.

  • SLI Gtx 580 issue

    Hi everyone,
As the title says, I have 2 GTX 580 in SLI, both are MSI twin frozr II.
I bought the first 580 in april, it worked perfectly so I took the other one in (OC Edition) last month (mostly for BF3 :D)
Everything seem to work fine, at least almost.
Sometimes, I get BSoD, in game, but also when I'm on the web or starting the computer.
I tried to "invert" the cards, and I've found that the problem was coming from the 2nd GTX 580.
When pluggin the screen on it (2nd GTX 580), I've had things appearing. I couln't take a photo, but I've found one that has the same things:
I tried to uninstall completely the Nvidia driver, reinstall the WHQL version, the Beta version, but this problem still happens.
Do you have any idea how to fix this problem?
Or does that mean that the 2nd GTX 580 is "defective"?
Since the problem isn't happening all the time, can I still send the card back to where I bought it for a "replacement"? (if defective), I feel like they'll find no problem with it, and send it back :/
    My computer specs:
    Motherboard: MSI P67A-GD65
CPU: Intel core i5 2500k, cooler: Hyper 212+ (But ot OC for the moment)
Power Supply: Cooler master Silent Pro 1000W
Hard Drive: SSD OCZ vertex 3 120gb + 1 To Caviar Black
    RAM: 4 x 2 Go G.Skill Kit Extreme3 PC10600 Ripjaws X CAS8
    Case: HAF 912

Actually, I did that yesterday, that's another thing I've completely forgotten to tell :S sorry.
Well, I didn't know if I could flash when the two cards were connected at the same time, so I removed the 1st card (oldest, N580GTX Twin Frozr II) downloaded the bios file NV255MS.104.zip and flashed the 2nd card (N580GTX Twin Frozr II/OC). After this was done, I did the same thing for the first GTX, bios file NV255MS.111.zip.
This afternoon, I still had 2 BSoD, one in game, the 2nd occured when the computer rebooted (didn't have time to get to the desktop -> BSoD)
Should I re-flash the vbios, but now with the 2 cards connected and bridge put on? If Yes, wich bios file should I take?
Anyway, thanks a lot for you help ^^

  • Gtx 580 twin frozr OC SLI Temps query

    Hi all,
I have 2 x gtx 580 twin frozr OC 800/1600 version cards running in SLI with 270.51 drivers,  idle for GPU1  37-43, idle for GPU2 is 34-40, i have an Antec 1200 case which provides good cooling and also using a side door fan to blow cool air in too, i have raised my voltage in afterburner to 1050 and everthing seems stable
my question is that with vsynch on i get GPU1 max about 75-78 degrees which seems fine as i know and accept that GPU1 in SLI will run hotter (my cards are close togeather on x58 sabertooth) and GPU2 is in the 60`s
but when i switch vsynch off my GPU1 hits high 80`s and up to 93, i have noticed in BFBC2, why is vsynch having such an effect on GPU1? temps, just seems strange that vsynch has such an effect on GPU1 considering i have very average idle temps etc
if my cards are stable is it worth updating the bios? will this help the temps
    cheers
    gamon

No, it should blow fresh air for the graphics' and processor fans to consume and then pass on to a very good exhaust fan, that removes it. - Somewhat like a car engine works. With a side-door fan you normally don't need intake fans, but start by reducing their speed, before removing them.
Plenty of space, 50 - 100 cm, around the case?

  • Building new system, MSI X58 Pro-E, i7 920, GTX 295, 6gb, Thermalright e-120

Hello, I was hoping for some advice on this rig, to overclock or not, etc; Im a bug gamer, so its really about gaming to the max 1st,
    Heres the brand new parts;
MSI X58 Pro-E (In the box, just arrived, do not know bios yet)
    i7 920
    Patriot Extreme Viper PVT36G1600ELK 6GB DDR3 9-9-9-24
    eVGA GTX295 1792mb CO-OP edition
Thermalright extreme e-120 cpu cooler (Jesus that thing is huge)
Im going to re-use this stuff:
2x500gb seagate HDD sata raid 0 for performance
Antec 900 case Lots of fans...nice
    DVD RW
Corsair TX750W Says 60A on a single +12v rail (I think its good, only @ a year or so old)
SB X-FI Fatality gamer sound card
So, basically should I look to OC this setup a bit? maybe to like 3 GHz or so? If so, whats the "safest" method to OC? I have an excellent cpu cooler and a case that has a ton of fans in it so hopefully I should be good for cooling.
Do I just OC the CPU? Will the memory run at its top speeds with this chip? or do I need to do something for the memory also, I recally for some reason on my current PC with a 780i SLI evga mobo I had to set the ram timins manually, they were never picked up properly on "auto", will I have that also on the MSI board?
I hope Ive provided enough information to get started.
    Thank you for any help!
Oh, I plan to build this baby the following weekend as I am working the next 2 weeks straight...meh

    Yes, why not?
Do not be aiming for 3 GHz, you can run that on stock voltage.  4 GHz is more within the grasp of the TRUE 120.

The only way you can overclock a CPU without overclocking anything else is with an extreme edition CPU.  (The i7 965, for example.)  It's overclocked by raising the CPU multiplier, not the baseclock frequency.
With regular CPUs, you overclock the baseclock, which overclocks the CPU core, CPU uncore, memory, and QPI frequency.

  • MSI X58 Pro SLI not working - solved

Just wanted to post my experience of the last couple days here so that hopefully google and the other spiders will grab it in case other people have the same problem I was having.
I have an MSI X58 Pro, and was running a single GeForce 8800GT for a long time.  I grabbed a second one on ebay thinking an SLI setup it would be a snap to install.  I came to find out that the bios version on my motherboard supported Cross Fire out of the box, but no SLI support.  When I had the MSI website do an automatic scan, it came back that the most up to date bios version for my board was 7.xx, but the version that supported SLI was 8.xx.  I was close to throwing in the towel, but found some threads here pointing to the download and use of the MSIHQ USB Bootable Tool and BIOS helper.  I manually downloaded the v 8.E bios update, had the tool create a bootable usb thumb drive, updated the bios without any drama and bingo, SLI is now working on my machine.
Big props and my thanks to the guys who made this tool, I owe you a cold one!

Thank you very much for the glowing post.  Yes, we are very proud of the Forum Flasher and have been trying to get MSI to officially adopt it as well.

  • A Few Questions About The GTX 580 Twin Frozr/OC in SLI

    Hi everyone!
I have a few questions if you guys don't mind answering them, first thing though to make it clear this system is not built yet but the build will start soon.
My first question is whether or not this PSU is capable of running two GTX 580 Twin Frozr/OC in SLI:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139015&Tpk=AX850
    +3.3V@25A, +5V@25A, +12V1@70A, [email protected], +5VSB@3A
My second question is whether or not the GTX 580 Twin Frozr/OC will come with a SLI bridge connector long enough to accomplish a connection over this distance:
If not where can I buy a bridge capable of accomplishing this?, the reason for this distance is to keep the bottom card from pushing air onto the top one.
The above is a normal ATX form factor motherboard or to be more specific a ASRock P67 EXTREME6.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157231

    Quote
    EDIT-
I'm looking at the picture right now and it looks like the bridge that comes with the motherboard is not long enough, any suggestions on where to buy one?
nope no idea, ask your reseller
    Quote
I didn't mean the Watts I mean the Amps, from other threads in this board it seems that some PSU's aren't up to the task of supplying the card with enough Amps, I was wondering if that PSU could supply enough for both.
Well you can figure from the graph
With one VGA it drains total 447W, where single 580GTX need 40A-42A,
adding second the same VGA to the system drains total 719W
    So 719-447=272W, 272W/12=23A, 42A+23A=65A
    or simple 719/12=60A

BTW, I would also like to say I'm currently using a MSI board in my current build and I love it!

You have two graphic cards with different amounts of Video RAM. The lightning has 1.5 gb and the Xtreme has 3 gb of Video RAM. You can only SLI cards with the same memory sizes.

I tested the first card I purchased the non stickered one, and running at factory overclock it crashed the driver about 20 minutes of gameplay.
What I did differently this time was I removed the Stickered card from the PCIE slot.
Wow amazing I didn't think it could be a single cards fault. I'll continue testing the stickered one too. What I did find strange was this non stickered card core values show 822 in MSI Afterburner and 823 in GPUZ.
What you mean by "stickered" and "non stickered" card?

I've got two GTX 580's LX in SLI. I got a EVGA GTX460 from a friend for dedicated phys-x.
    My issues are:
    1) When i put the 460 in my system the APS software doesn't work. Is it because it detects a non msi card? shouldn't it work regardless because i also have 580 LX?
    2) trying to fix the issue, i noticed that even when i didn't have the 460 in my system and i enabled and applied APS software, the lights on the cards don't change (turn off) according to what the software shows. Does the APS not work when cards are in SLI?

Even some electric heaters consume less.

Those temps are not excessive !
If you tested your cards individually, only one card in the case, you will find that the temps are lower. In SLI one card is normally hotter than the other for obvious reasons.
Secondly, if your H70 is installed as per Corsair's recommendation, then the hot air accumalated from the radiator is dumped inside your case, adding to the overall temp inside. (The design is not ideal in my opinion) Ideally you have 1 or 2 fans at the top of the case extracting the warm air when using a H50 or H70 in standard installation mode, especially when having 2 GTX580s under full load inside.
Do you have a side panel fan pushing air onto the GPU cards ?

  • Two (separate) GTX 580 Twin Frozr OC running too hot?

I just just bought two GTX 580 Twin Frozr II OC. I can't run these in SLI yet but have tested both separately in my PC. Something doesn't seem right in the temps. Both cards when using Kombustor get to 85+ degrees. I was made to believe these cards are meant to be far cooler than the reference design (box states 19C cooler!). I tested the cards separately. Ambient temp is just under 30C.
Here are my relevant PC specs:
    Intel Core i7 920 2.67GHz D0
    Thermalright Venomous X + Scythe S-FLEX 120mm 1900rpm SFF21G
    EVGA X58 Classified E760 Motherboard

    Corsair HX-620W PSU
    Lian Li PC-A77B (+ W75BT side window)
    Scythe Kaze Master Pro 5.25"
    5x Case fans (3 in - 2 out)
    Pioneer S16J DVD DL-RW
    Western Digital Black 1TB WD1002FAEX
    Western Digital Green 1TB WD10EARS
    Asus Xonar Xense 7.1
Also, when using one of these cards, it bumps my CPU from 40C to 63C idle!
Funny thing is, my GTX 470 was actually cooler than this and that card was heavily overclocked.

The actual box claims it is 19C cooler than the reference cooler. See MSI's own site: http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N580GTX-Twin-Frozr-II-OC.html

Increasing intake will not do you much good, you need to increase exhaust airflow somehow. Exhaust airflow should be greater than intake. A side intake blowing on VGA cards can help but any way you do it exhaust air still needs to be greater than intake air.
This is a good point. I'll be buying some 2200RPM Yate Loons soon from my water cooling set up (will be throttling them to 1200-1600RPM), I will install two of these in my case as a test to see if my temps drop. I'll then install more as intake as well and observe the difference.
