X58m raid settings

I just recently bought an x58m motherboard, I have a brand new fresh install of windows 7 and everything seems to work fine.
However, in the bios If I try to enable either raid or ahci as raid options I get a bluescreen before the OS even loads.
I am not running any drives in raid, the reason why I wish to enable achi is that I want my e-sata drive to be hot swappable.
Currently I have to turn it on before my computer and turn it off after my computer.
The only suggestion I've seen regarding raid settings is to install a fresh version of windows with them enabled.
I'd like to avoid doing this if at all possible.

It makes no mention in the bios which controller I am adjusting to raid or ahci.
The RAID Setting for the Intel ICH10R Controller is located here:
Integrated Peripherals -> On-Chip ATA Devices -> RAID Mode = [IDE / AHCI / RAID]

As far as how I installed the drivers, I have been running in IDE mode, this is the only mode that will boot, I installed the drivers and after a successful reboot went into the bios and changed to achi and raid going through 3 bsods each before switching back.
That is precisely where the problem starts:  You cannot install the drivers for something that is not there yet.  When you install the drivers while the controller is in IDE mode, they are not actually installed.  The controller already needs to be in RAID Mode, otherwise the drivers can't be properly installed.  This is a common Windows dilemma.  Even though Vista and Windows 7 are supposed to be able to handle a switch of the controller mode to AHCI or RAID better than XP because they provide generic drivers, they utterly fail in most cases, because the drivers are either crap or the routine for adapting to the switch to RAID or AHCI is useless.  Also, keep in mind, that Windows 7 is still not officially released and that Intel does not provide official driver support for Windows 7 yet.  The bottom line is, that this whole thing is a problem that has to do with the operating system alone, not the board or BIOS.
The best option you have is to switch the controller to RAID Mode, then configure your Array via the Intel Matrix Storage Manager Option ROM, start to reinstall Windows 7 again and integrate the Intel ICH10R RAID Drivers when you get the chance to do so during the Setup Procedure.  If you decide to do so, please download the latest ICH10R RAID Drivers directly from Intel.

  • How to update my MSI X99S Gaming 7 Bios without loose my raid settings

    Hi all,
    I've got a MSI X99S Gaming 7 Motherboard.
Last time I used MSI Live Update and I performed BIOS update I lost totally my raid settings ( O.S. HardDisk C is build on my raid 1) and I had to reinstall all from 0. Now MSI Live Update notified me a new BIOS version available, is there a way to perform it without lost my C Drive one more time?
Thanks in advance for your help.

The only settings should do is after BIOS updating, go the BIOS Settings--Advanced--Integrated Peripherals--SATA Mode switch to [RAID Mode], and everything should be fine.
Yes exactly, that's usually and typically which has to be done.
But with some note there are an exceptions from this:
in the past there was some BIOSes due bugs which caused RAID array lost issue after flashing,
assume raid was re-enabled after the update,
but RAID array was lost(didn't recognize the settings) and didn't show and unable to rebuild..
so its always good to have a backup of important data just in case..

  • HOW DO YOU GET TO THE RAID SETTINGS ON THIS THING (GT60 2O)???

Dude... I been online for 40 minutes looking for instructions on how to get around this box. I can't find anything relevant, so I'm just gonna ask. How do you get to the settings for SUPER RAID 2? I can't find any information on it and now I'm really getting frustrated!! Any help would be appreciated.

First go into your BIOS and set the controller to RAID instead of AHCI/IDE/whatever it is.
You should then be able to use some key combination (such as ALT+H or whatever it is) to enter the Intel Raid ROM and setup the RAID in there.

When I reset BIOS they came back all enabled ( primary and secondary and all 4 SATA. How do I determine which channels are in use? Also which area in BIOS allows me to change from 64 to 16K? I'm a little lost noob (or due to age maybe some Alzimers?)thanks in advance.
    RAID is disabled by default.
Enable SATA as RAID for channels where are your HDD detected: (example: if you are connected your SATA disks to SATA1 & SATA2, configure RAID for  SATA1 & SATA2.)
after raid is enabled, and configured property leave BIOS (SAVE AND EXIT) you will need to setup your raid configuration, by pushing F10 to enter Raid setup after post:
hit F10 when menu popup to enter RAID utility.
    •     Now select Striping, Mirroring, Striping+Mirroring, Spanning.
    •    Next push the tab key, and select the striping block size you want.
    •    Push the tab key again, and select the hard drives you want to include in the Raid array.
    •    Then push F7 to save and finish the Raid array.
Choice Stripping mode for RAID mode and add both HDDs to array. select "Striping Block" to 16k.
then hit F7 when you done. at next menu make your array bootable by selecting array and hit "B":
    config with "Y" when asked.
NOTE: Information on both Disk will be lost.

  • UCSM 2.1 Local disk configuration policy and raid volumes

    Hi!
If i use Any configuration as local disk configuration policy and do the raid settings directly to the RAID-cards, am i able to have two raid volumes on C-series under UCSM management?
What i would like to do with C240M3 with 6 local disks: 2 disk raid1 and 4 disk raid0
    So i would use:
"Any Configuration—For a server configuration that carries forward the local disk configuration without any changes."
As UCS servers Raid guide indicates:
"Maximum of One RAID Volume and One RAID Controller in Integrated Rack-Mount Servers
A rack-mount server that has been integrated with Cisco UCS Manager can  have a maximum of one RAID volume irrespective of how many hard drives  are present on the server. "
Is this paragraph limitation of GUI not able to set several volumes or hard fact without "Any configuration" workaround?

I did some testing about this issue:
Changed Local Disk Configuration to "Any Configuration"
Two virtual disks can be created from Raid card's WebBIOS
These disks are visible to RedHat Installation.
UCSM shows Any configuration for the Storage Local Disk policy
Actual Disk Configuration has faulty information - WebBios is the only place to check the RAID status?
Next step: I'll do the same for the production

  • Raid Setup 990FXA-GD65

I have been running 2 drives as raid 1. I added a third drive that I want to use for storing files but not as a raid drive, just as a SATA drive.  Now when I boot I get a critical warning because it set itself as raid 1, LD2. How can I change it to just be a SATA drive. I have looked in both the bios and raid settings but it appears all of the ports must be set to either one or the other.

Backup your data and use software-raid after.
The speed is the same but all Windows versions can use it.
MSI won't make a driver, it's the chipset manufacturer that does that.

  • Disappeared raid

I seem to be having a major problem with my xserve - osx server 10.5.8.
I have my system setup with a terabyte software mirror array and it seems to have just "disappeared" on me. When I cd in terminal to /Volumes/Files, I have two drives showing up (Files9 and Files 1). There obviously should be only one showing up, but for some reason there are two. The /Files volume contains only the directory for my calendar server (/Volumes/Files/CalendarServer/) while the other one contains all my files as is normal (/Volumes/Files 1/). I checked the disk manager for the software raid settings and it checks out okay and verified the disks.
When I browse the drive from Finder, it shows up as "Files", but it points to the correct drive (/dev/disk3 931Gi 784Gi 147Gi 85% /Volumes/Files 1) which is now named wrong.
Why are both of these appearing, why is it not one drive showing up? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  • Installing Arch on a RAID (for dummies)

Playing with RAID's is fun for all the family, and makes things go faster.
this is how I (re)installed Arch Linux, in a simple RAID configuration.
    Ingredients
    ===========
    1. Two 160GB drives
    2. Arch Linux CD (Dont Panic)
    Planning
    ========
    1. root partition on a RAID 1 setup (mirroring)
    2. home partition on a RAID 0 setup (striping)
    3. swap partition on a RAID 0 setup (striping)
in this kinda setup, one disk can fry, but the system will still boot and function normally.
home will be lost for ever, but I always back it up anyway (and so should you).
*Important* - make sure your two IDE drives are not connected to the same cable, setup one as a primary master and the second as a secondary master.
    The works
    =========
    1. Boot the machine using the setup CD.
    2. Using cfdisk, partition the two drives exactly the same:
Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
    /dev/sda1   *           1        4863    39062016   83  Linux
    /dev/sda2            4864       17021    97659135   83  Linux
    /dev/sda3           17022       17083      498015   82  Linux swap / Solaris
I chose 40GB for root, 100GB for home (results in 200GB), and 1GB for swap.
Do exactly the same on the second drive /dev/sdb
    3. create the RAIDs using mdadm:
    modprob raid1
    modprob raid0
    mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1
    mdadm --create /dev/md1 --level=0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2
    mdadm --create /dev/md2 --level=0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3
    4. create filesystems on the partitions:
    mkfs.xfs /dev/md0
    mkfs.xfs /dev/md1
    mkswap /dev/md2
    5. mount the root partition on /mnt
    mount /dev/md0 /mnt
    6. start the setup program
    /arch/setup
    7. select all base packages
    8. install packages
    9. configure:
choose configure system and then, edit mkinitcpio.conf modules section:
    MODULES="ata_generic ata_piix raid1 raid0 xfs"
In this line, I only added "raid1 raid0 xfs" to the modules.
then, edit mkinitcpio.conf hooks section, and add the RAID stuff after that:
HOOKS="base udev raid autodetect pata scsi sata usbinput keymap filesystems"
    md=0,/dev/sda1,/dev/sdb1
    md=1,/dev/sda2,/dev/sdb2
    md=2,/dev/sda3,/dev/sdb3
In the hooks line, I have added the raid hook before autodetect
    10. install the kernel
choose install kernel from the menu.
    11. Install grub
    choose install bootloader then grub
    edit the grub entry to:
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title  Arch Linux  [/boot/vmlinuz26]
    root   (hd0,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/md0 ro md=0,/dev/sda1,/dev/sdb1
    initrd /boot/kernel26.img
    install grub to /dev/sda
when prompted about root partition choose /dev/sda1
when prompted about RAID stuff choose no
do exactly the same on /dev/sdb
    12. exit the setup program
    13. fix mdadm.conf
    mdadm -D --scan >>/mnt/etc/mdadm.conf
    14. fix fstab
    add this to /mnt/etc/fstab:
    /dev/md0                /       xfs     defaults                0       0
    /dev/md1                /home   xfs     defaults                0       0
    /dev/md2                swap    swap    defaults                0       0
    15. reboot and install the rest of the system
    16. make sure all is well:
    cat /proc/mdstat
    Personalities : [raid1] [raid0] [linear] [multipath] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10]
    md2 : active raid0 sda3[0] sdb3[1]
          995840 blocks 64k chunks
    md1 : active raid0 sda2[0] sdb2[1]
          195318016 blocks 64k chunks
    md0 : active raid1 sdb1[1] sda1[0]
          39061952 blocks [2/2] [UU]
    mount
/dev/md0 on / type xfs (rw)
/dev/md1 on /home type xfs (rw)
    make sure swap is on:
    cat /proc/swaps
    Filename                                Type            Size    Used    Priority
    /dev/md2                                partition       995832  0       -1
    17. If things go wrong, you can reassemble the RAIDs after booting from the setup CD, dont recreate them:
    mdadm --reassemble /dev/md0 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1

Sorry for the late reply clickit, I guess you might have fixed it already.
There is a mistake in the guide, I will correct it now, the types in these lines should be --level=0
    mdadm --create /dev/md1 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2
    mdadm --create /dev/md2 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda3 /dev/sdb3
Very sorry about that, but that does not cause your problem, because it would have created a mirror RAID instaed of a stripe.
Your BIOS has nothing to do with the Linux software RAID, the RAID settings you see in BIOS are probably to enable the on-board RAID controller you have.
The grub part is tricky, you have to make sure whats in the configuration file is according to the setup that you have (not just copy from the guide).
Also keep in mind that if you have SATA, things might look different and the setup might need to be different.
PS - regarding swap, since I wrote the guide I removed the swap space and instead I use a swap file on the RAID0.. I guess it the same because my system  rarely uses swap anyway

  • Have to restart every time I starup - RAID or other set-up problem?

It's off topic - apologies - I've had no luck in the Mac Pro forum or general searching. I am posting here too as I wonder if it's to do with my FCP or RAID settings, or similar...
Every time I startup, the Mac Pro freezes straight away and I have to restart. When I do I get the RAID utility which gives an error message due to the 'disorderly shutdown'.
At one point I also got RAID errors as I wasn't letting the RAID card battery charge, but I have since worked that out. I have no RAID knowledge (it is not my mac, just the one I am working on) and don't fully understand how it effects this set up.
I have 1 system and 2 media drives, Internal 1TB. And according to the RAID utility - one RO-1 RAID Set.
I tried to post a screen grab of the RAID utility but can't seem to make that work.
I've tried Safe Booting, Repairing permissions, and no joy - always the double startup.
    Any pointers appreciated..
    Cheers
    Hugh

Ok, this is the first time I am going to be setting up RAID. I have two new 64 GB SSD's hooked up to SATA 1-2 (The first 2 white SATA 6.0). I go into BIOS, and I set the settings to RAID, and then I enable SATA 1 + 2. I save and reset, and during the post, I press ctrl I. I see the raid settings with the raid devices... like its going to go into RAID set up; however, it then shows the logo screen for msi m/b and then goes to command and does nothing after that.
What am I doing wrong? Do I need to install the controller drives via floppy drive? Bad thing is I don't have a floppy drive, but I can buy one. Is there any way to install the controller with out the floppy? Can it be done via USB?
I just built this new system today, so I am very anxious to get it up and running, so please reply fast hehe Im waiting =D

Never mind, I wasn't pressure Ctrl I correctly

    Hello ovonellenovo,
The RAID settings should be there.
For something like this, you will need to submit a support ticket:

This is an old firmware, but the path should be something like: Settings/Disks/Manage Disks, if I remember correctly.

  • BIOS update and RIAD settings

Will updating the BIOS on my 925X Neo change/erase/alter my current RAID settings? I'm in a RAID mirror setting now. I'd like to update the BIOS as long as doing so won't change any of the settings I have now. Thanks for you help!

Is your RAID Intel ICH6's RAID or external embedded RAID? If it's embedded RAID, no it will not change. If it's Intel ICH6 RAID, all you need to do is to make sure it's enabled n the BIOS (same as embedded RAID), and then go to the RAID setup again to restore your RAID settings if necessary.
In other words, flashing BIOS will not change your RAID settings as long as you put back your settings back.

  • SATA RAID conflics with POMISE T3 RAID Bios

I've read quite a few of the RAID setup issues concerning the "Extra" RAID settings under "integrated peripherals" for the K9A2 Platinum. My problem seems to be a bit unique. I can't get both the SATA RAID and the Promise "Fast Track" to work together. If I enable the Extra RAID Controllers the Fastrack Bios does not recognize my SATA RAID.
This simply means that for some reason the motherboard SATA RAID conflicts or disables the PROMISE RAID Bios and vice versa. So I have not been able to activate my eSATA ports or use anything connected to the SATA5-6 ports without going into the CMOS and setting SATA DEVICES to IDE and then turning on the EXTRA Raid Controller under "Integrated Peripherals" in the CMOS. Unless I'm wrong. I am almost sure that this scenario is right.
The second issue is that I cannot get my ram to go in DUAL CHANNEL  mode. But I will post that issue another time.

With Vista Ultimate SP1 on my machine the USB Flasher Tool kept on crashing when the BIOS was at v 1.2 on the KA92 mainboard.
The DOS window came up fine but it appeared that every susequent module that was brought up for detecting the motherboard caught some kind of conlfict and terminated causing Vista to summon the program terminated message box. Eventually the dos prompt would state that it could not detect the motherboard and close. All in red text. This happened only when I flashed the BIOS with v1.2. I wanted to go back to 1.3 just to verify that the BIOS version was the cause and the only reason I got back to 1.3 or 1.4 easily was becaus it was backed up by the tool so all I had to do was rename the backup.bin file(s). Again everything went as expected with the USB Flasher Tool until I loaded the v1.2 BIOS. It could not even detect the mainboard.
The only reason I didn't need the tool anymore was that it backed up the versions of the bios for each time that I had flashed the bios previously.
