X6: I killed it. I am free

Like many others here, I have been a loyal Nokia customer for many years. Through thick and thin (literally) I have learned to work around the odd bug in firmware and found the various devices I've owned (6110 was the first I think, 8110, 8210 etc. all the way through to an E71 and latterly, my current Nokia, an X6-00) a joy to hold and use.
How I have tried to love this X6; the camera is superb, the videos put many digital cameras to shame. I find the music library to be a genuine replacement for my old iPod Touch. On paper, the Nokia Messaging Email service should be a competitor to Blackberry's service.
And yet how I have hated it. The Nokia Messaging Email app for S60v5 is truly appalling. The build quality of the device is little better than that of a cheap Eastern European car of the mid-80s. The inconsistency of the Symbian user experience when used with a touchscreen. The half-assed CarMenu application, still in beta after well over a year. I could go on, but appreciating that everyone's experience is different, I'll not.
The tumultuous affair is over however. At the weekend, my X6-00 was subjected to a dip in a pint of Guinness. Not just a splash - a proper bath. And then on Sunday morning, my son stood on it, cracking the digitizer. It is dead. It is an ex-X6.
And so, my purgatory is over. I have reverted to my E71 and realised two things:
1. My X6 was worse than I appreciated at the time
2. The E71 is a fantastic piece of hardware, running an operating system which 'just works'.
My faith in the brand has been temporarily restored. I sincerely hope Nokia can even find the wagon they fell off not so long ago and realise that their previous reign as hardware kings is something they need to work hard to re-gain, and realise that software testing isn't something that's done by the customer after the device has gone to market.
The X6 is currently sitting in its component parts on my dining room table, awaiting a replacement screen. The engine board still boots up and I've managed to perform a backup via data cable. But to be honest, I really don't care if it ever lives again. My heart's not in it; I've gone back to my wife, the E71.
Please Nokia, don't let this happen again. You're teasing me with the N8 but I've had my fingers burnt already. Better the devil you know for me I'm afraid.
Andy.

I finally got hold of a free email client called "Emoze" that receives push-mail 100% reliabley, which is probably something I should have done a long time ago. I guess that I finally realised Nokia's email app is now permanently broken and will never be fixed, and let me tell you what a relief it is to use an app that "just works".
This, coupled with some improvements to lag that they fixed in the latest update, the fixes they made for Flashlite, and another app to let me stream LastFM over 3G, has finally given me what was promised when I bought my X6 almost 7 months ago. Now I won't need to buy an Android, coz I think the camera and GPS in the X6 are far superior to the HTC legend belonging to my g/f.

  • Killed Disk Utility Erase Free Space. Now 0 available

    (I erroneously posted this earlier to the Safari forum; posting here again)
    I ran Disk Utility "Erase free space" on my iMac G5 250GB boot drive (I had about 130GB free). It ran for about 50 minutes, and got to "creating temp file" and then seemed to hang (thermometer didn't move for 20 minutes). So I force killed it. It seems to have left that "temp file" that takes up all available space since Disk Utility now reports 0 bytes available (and MS Entourage says insufficient free space and exits). I ran Finder "Secure empty trash" to delete 57 files with no error. But Disk Utility still says 0 bytes available.
    First Aid "Verify Disk" reports no problems. "Verify Permissions" reports no problems.
    Is there a way to regain my available space?
    Thanks,
    Ken

    Restart did it. Thanks very much.

  • OOM Killer is killing the Java processes without using the swap?

    Hi All,
    We are using RHEL 5 64 bit on blade server CISCO UCS B230-M2.
    Below is the memory details on the server. I could see from the sar -r command it did not used the swap memory at all but it calls the OOM killer everyday.
    su@ /root-> free -g
                 total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
    Mem:           125        119          5          0          2         81
    -/+ buffers/cache:         35         89
    Swap:          251          0        251
    The issue is occuring every day and doesnt allow any user to connect to the server in that perticular time, After some time we could see the below messages in /var/log/messages and once the java processes are getting killed it allow the new telnet connections.
    Any help on this is much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Sachin.

    It looks like you experience low memory exhaustion. The kernel uses low memory to track allocations of all memory and the more memory you have, the more low memory will have to be allocated. When low memory is exhausted, it doesn't matter how much high memory is available, the oom-killer will begin killing processes to keep the server alive. There are a number of bug reports and patches available regarding this problem affecting Enterprise Linux kernels 4.4 - 4.8. Other solutions are to move to a 64-bit kernel or use 32-bit hugemem. Are you running NFS?
    Perhaps you might want to try the following:
    # cat /proc/sys/vm/lower_zone_protection
    You can try to increase the value and see what happens:
    # echo "250" > /proc/sys/vm/lower_zone_protection
    To set this option on boot, add the following to /etc/sysctl.conf:
    vm.lower_zone_protection = 250
    As a last resort effort, you can disable the oom-killer. This option can cause the server to hang, so use it at your own risk.
    Check status of oom-killer:
    # cat /proc/sys/vm/oom-kill
    Turn oom-killer off/on:
    # echo "0" > /proc/sys/vm/oom-kill
    # echo "1" > /proc/sys/vm/oom-kill

  • Problem with BFILE closure

    I have a problem with a pending session (Oracle 8.1.7, Windows 2000). The active process is waiting for a BFILE to close (BFILE closure). It has been waiting > 7000 secs. The file to read is a simple csv-file with 10 lines.
    I'm using the widely spread "ftp"-package (I have removed all procedures with a "binary" part as 8i dont have the "put_raw" feature. I've used binary part of the package in 10g without any problems).
    The procedure where the problem occurs:
    FUNCTION get_local_ascii_data (p_dir IN VARCHAR2,
    p_file IN VARCHAR2)
    RETURN CLOB IS
    l_bfile BFILE;
    l_data CLOB;
    l_amount BINARY_INTEGER := 32767;
    l_pos INTEGER := 1;
    wText varchar2(32767);
    BEGIN
    DBMS_LOB.createtemporary (lob_loc => l_data,
    cache => TRUE,
    dur => DBMS_LOB.call);
    l_bfile := BFILENAME(p_dir, p_file);
    DBMS_LOB.fileopen(l_bfile, DBMS_LOB.file_readonly);
    DBMS_LOB.loadfromfile(l_data, l_bfile, DBMS_LOB.getlength(l_bfile));
    DBMS_LOB.fileclose(l_bfile);
    RETURN l_data;
    END;
    The file to be read contains the following:
    1;john;heinrich;vejnavn 1;2650;hvidovre
    2;john;heinrich;vejnavn 2;2650;hvidovre
    3:john;heinrich;vejnavn 3;2650;hvidovre
    4;john;heinrich;vejnavn 4;2650;hvidovre
    5;john;heinrich;vejnavn 5;2650;hvidovre
    6;john;heinrich;vejnavn 6;2650;hvidovre
    7;john;heinrich;vejnavn 7;2650;hvidovre
    8;john;heinrich;vejnavn 8;2650;hvidovre
    9;john;heinrich;vejnavn 9;2650;hvidovre
    10;john;heinrich;vejnavn 10;2650;hvidovre
    Any clue?
    It locks the package in question, and killing the session dont free the package. Only a db shotdown will free the package. Is there a way to "close" the bfile?

    What information is there in your post indicating the BFILE did not close and that this is the cause of the problem?
    8.1.7 is so old I haven't seen it in almost a decade so I can't test this out but it seems to me you should be focusing new development efforts on a version of the product that has been supported during the current millennium.

  • How to findout deleted files in hp unix

    Hi All,
    i have deleted some files from audit directory on HP-UX machine files have been removed but space has not been released, so how to find out the deleted files and remove them to free up the memory and lsof utility is not installed,
    please help me in that to resolve the issue without lsof.
    Thanks in advance

    so how to find out the deleted files and remove them to free up the memory You mean free up disk space? If the files are loaded into memory then that would be either process memory or shared memory. Killing the process will free up that memory, whereas you can use ipcs to remove shared memory.
    and lsof utility is not installed, please help me in that to resolve the issue without lsof.That is like asking what to use to drive a nail into wood - but without using a hammer. You can use your head.. but it will hurt. Likewise not using the correct s/w tools also hurts and is unlikely to do an effective job. Why not simply install lsof - or if that is a problem, start killing processes that you suspect may have those deleted files open. Or simply reboot the platform.

  • Server didn't reboot

    I just installed 10.5.1 yesterday, and some time this AM, around 4:44, the server decided to reboot for some reason, but didn't. When I got in, the computer was not stalled in a kernel panic, but stuck on the Mac logo during the startup process. Once restarted, all appears well.
    I've looked at the logs, and honestly don't know what I'm looking at or for. And of course, there are more logs than you can shake a stick at, so I'm not even sure if I'm looking at the RIGHT log to determine what went wrong.
    In the Console/All Messages, there is a string of entries right before the attempted re-start, but there is a string of messages in all the logs starting from when I installed it yesterday. The only time lapse is between the last entries earlier this AM at the failed reboot, and when I came in to re-start it.
    Any ideas of where I should look?
    FWIW, this message appears every hour, and is looks like the last entry before it crashed:
    11/21/07 4:44:56 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (edu.cmu.andrew.cyrus.master[26613]) Stray process with PGID equal to this dead job: PID 26614 PPID 1 ctl_cyrusdb
    11/21/07 4:44:56 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (edu.cmu.andrew.cyrus.master[26613]) Exited abnormally: User defined signal 1
    11/21/07 4:44:56 AM com.apple.launchd[1] (edu.cmu.andrew.cyrus.master) Throttling respawn: Will start in 8 seconds
    If anyone can assist in helping me solve this, I'd be more than grateful.
    TIA

    Hi Jeffrey,
    I'm experiencing the same problems.
    To me, it appears as if ctl_cyrusdb is taking far too long to complete, so launchd is killing it. This happens repeatedly. With each new attempt, disk space vanishes until it is finally exhausted. I assume the act of killing ctl_cyrusdb does not free the memory it has allocated for itself.
    Running ctl_cyrusdb manually on my machine takes about two minutes, far longer than the default 20 seconds launchd waits for.
    I don't yet know why running ctl_cyrusdb takes so long, there's only a dozen mailboxes and I haven't figured out yet how to activate detailled logging of what it is waiting for.
    Cheers,
    Christian

  • Problem in Our Old Solaris

    Hi all,
    We have SunOS 5.10 server with five (5) applications running.
    Lately we encountered frequent running out of memory issues.
    It seems that the server can not clean up run-away processes that still holding on the resources.
    Even if we shutdown 4 applications and leave the 1 critical, the server still is crawling in performance.
    We resolve this the rebooting the server and then the applications is good in performance again.
    My question is, How do I kill and release or free-up all the held resources by run-away process?
    I am only familiar with linux monitoring tools. Is there monitoring tool in SunOS 5.10 that will tell you how much total memory is free and used?. or how much % CPU is free and used.
    Thanks you very much in advance.

    I'm not sure exactly what resource you are talking about, but killing a process which holds a lot of memory or consumes a lot of CPU should immediately clear up its usage of memory/CPU.
    If this is not happening there are two causes which i can think of:
    1) you killed the wrong process
    2) the process did not end but is still running.
    The two most common tools to check a Solaris host for resource usage are prstat (to check the statistics of processes) and vmstat. Other tools which comes to mind are netstat (to check performance of network-related issues) and iostat (for disk activities).
    There are also a lot of Dtrace scripts around which might come in handy (Google for the Dtrace Toolkit).
    Also, if you are lucky someone installed 'top' on your system, which gives a quite good overview of CPU/memory usage. If its not there you can easily install if from www.sunfreeware.com

  • Checking Essbase service state

    Hi,
    Sometimes happens that you can not start any Essbase app which normally starts.
    The reason could be there is orphaned Essbase process :) and to run app you must kill this process.
    I would like to automate this process for administrator task.
    Have you got or know any tool or script which could help with automate this kind of task?
    ...and I would like to ask about another products e.g. Shared Services, Financial Reporting, Planning which are deployed on Tomcat - these services sometimes hang, you could see that service is working but the only way to work with product is restart service?
    pscol

    Well if we are going to spoon feed:
    #!/bin/ksh
    PID = `ps -ef | grep -i ESSBASE | grep -v grep`
    #Kill with HUP to that ESSBASE can try to shutdown all the children apps
    kill -13 ${PID}
    sleep 600
    PID = `ps -ef | grep -i ESSBASE | grep -v grep`
    #If pid still exists
    if [[ ! -z ${PID} ]]; then
    kill -9 ${PID}
    fi
    #You will need to figure out which column the PID is in and adjust the cut command appropriately.
    ESSPIDS=`ps -ef | grep -i ESSSR | grep -v grep | cut -c1-5`
    kill -9 ${ESSPIDS}
    Feel free to reach out -- I should build up a Linux VM which would be close to AIX.

  • They tend to be more complicated

    There was a time when video surveillance was used only in big malls and shopping centers. These days, you can see CCTV’s almost any place you go, from a small shop to homes and religious centers. Thus, they ensure greater public safety at a fraction of the cost.Digital video security camera systems are easy to install. In fact, it takes less than a few minutes to determine the system that's right for you, and have it installed in your home or business. Some government security camera systems take a little longer to install, as they tend to be more complicated, and tend to cover a much larger area. The great thing about digital video is the quality of the signal that is transmitted and recorded. Another great thing is variety of features available with digital video recorders, such as: High resolution Hard Disk Storage, Date/Time or Event or Segment search, built in multiplexer that allows simultaneous recording of multiple security cameras. Both of these factors provide you with a top of the line security camera system for protecting your property.

    When I boot Mac OSX 10.7.2, a process called Calendar runs at nearly 100% for perhaps a minute or so.  When it finally quiets down, Activity Monitor shows that it has consumed 2.3 GB of memory (over half what's available).  I've taken to killing this process to free the memory, with no apparent ill effects.  But I'd like to know what's going on and how to fix it.  Anybody seen this?

  • IOS 4 broken on 3GS - Summary of issues noted so far.

    Hi;
    Some of these items duplicate items others have posted, but I'll go into what I can see in detail. Everything below relates to iOS 4.
    - Battery Life.
    * Does not appear to be impacted by iOS 4 -- there's a software issue with this iOS release that I see. iOS continues "rapid charging" the 3GS battery and never gives it a full charge. The result is a phone that says 100% when charged, but rapidly drops to approx 65% where the battery appears to stabilize.
    - Wake up
    * iOS 4 has significant issues waking up when the home button is pressed. It may wake and sleep the phone again almost instantly. Sometimes it takes over a minute to wake the phone.
    - Touch screen. On wake -or even when in use- the touch screen can be unresponsive to any input.
    - Touch screen during input. Screen may take forever to respond to any input eg: text typing in Notes or Mail.
    - Improper mail handling. Using GMail, a "reply" to a mail can result in a frozen handset. Using the home button to escape this freeze works, but now my gmail inbox has a piece of zero-byte mail. No sender, subject or content, dated 1969 (Unix - the epoch). This mail does not appear on a computer running gmail nor can it be removed from the gmail screen on the iPhone.
    - Significant load time problems. Applications (if they respond) can take two to three times the amount of time to load.
    - Multitasking issues -- on examination of running processes, many uneccessary items are there. Just because calculator can multitask, does not mean it needs to chew memory when I haven't even opened it once with iOS 4. Other apps running (and using CPU cycles) include iPod, Calendar, Maps, Voicememos, Safari, etc. Please Apple, I'll launch these Apps when I need them. The App, System Activity Monitor, is not able to kill these apps or free memory under iOS 4.
    - No process "kill" capability to free resources on the phone.
    - Delayed display of caller-id data on incoming phone calls. I assume the remote caller is getting multiple rings as when the display / caller-id is finally on I often only get 1-2 rings before the iPhone sleeps again.
    * I have to say this is the shoddiest software release I've seen from Apple. It really represents a bunch of geeks trying to introduce too many features with total disregard for quality.
    Apple needs to seriously knuckle down and fix this.
    my .02c
    -Drew.

    I had to reboot my 3GS a few times to get all the Aps to work properly. Furthermore, I went to the Aps store to make sure I have all the latest and greatest updates. Finally, if you double click on your home button, then you will see all your apps running in the background (at the bottom of the screen). Just press down on one of the Apps, and a little red minus button will come up. Close all of the Aps you are not using. This will preserve your battery life. They will run again when you relaunch them. Keep in mind any time you open up an App it is running in the background. So you may have a whole lot of these programs that are eating up your battery life right now. When you close them this does not mean you will prevent you from receive push messages, etc. You will still get text, messages from ESPN for instance, etc..
    I hope this helps you out.

  • Flash in internet explorer

    Hi everyone. I just wanted to see if anyone has encountered
    the same problem I'm having. Basically, I installed an update on my
    computer like Microsoft wanted with their automatic updates. But
    when I did that, now everytime I open internet explorer and go to a
    site with Flash content, it puts a box around the content and says
    that I need to click on it first to activate the control. It never
    used to do that before and quite frankly it's really annoying and
    senseless. Has anyone experienced this same problem and does anyone
    have a solution to this? Why did Microsoft do that anyways? and Is
    Microsoft aware of this situation and are they planning on coming
    out with a patch for it? Thanks everyone.

    Yes . .everybody who has latest IE 6 or new IE 7

    That is correct. it also does it for any other ActvieX
    control
    > It never used to do that before
    No it didn't.
    > and quite frankly it's really annoying and senseless.
    Yes .. you can thank EOLAS and the stupid US patent system
    for that
    > Has anyone experienced this same problem
    Yes . .everybody who has latest IE 6 or new IE 7
    > and does anyone have a solution to this?
    There is a temporary patch from MS that will turn of the new
    'feature' for a
    short while, but that will not 'fix' the problem permantntly.
    This is how
    Internet Explorer will be from now on
    > Why did Microsoft do that anyways?
    So they did not infringe on a patent from a tiny company
    called EOLAS who
    never had a product but patented a general idea and then
    years later decided
    to sue Microsoft for having hte same idea in IE and wanted to
    charge them an
    exhorbitatnt license fee that would have killed IE as a fre
    ebrowser etc
    > and Is Microsoft aware of this situation
    Of course they are. This is the best they can do to keep from
    infringing
    the patent
    > and are they planning on coming out with a patch for it?
    It IS the patch and it is how IE will be from now on.
    Web developers will have to use different techniques in their
    web pages from
    now on to avoid the click-to-activate message. See
    http://activecontent.blogspot.com

    Next time, please browser or search the forum .. there have
    been hundreds
    (if not thousands) of posts on this very subject in the last
    few weeks. And
    you'll find Google a very useful tool .. many thousands of
    sites talking
    about this issue.

  • Help needed testing a free "killer application"

    Applications which turn your phone into a remote control already exist; but they COST, and they only work on phones with IRDA port.
    Maybe no more: it's really probable that ANY cellphone with audio play capability can be used as a remote, just spending 1$ to buy a couple of IR leds!
    Take a look at this blog post:
    http://jumpjack.wordpress.com/2008/05/20/worlds-cheapest-remote-control-replicator-just-1/
    The method described there works fine for me using a PC: I connect one led to audio-in to sample the remote, I edit the waveform, then I play it through a couple of IR leds properly connected to audio-out, and I can control my devices!
    There's apparently no reason for which same method can't work with a cellphone's audio-out port:
    http://features.engadget.com/2004/07/27/how-to-turn-your-ipod-in-to-a-universal-infrared-remote-cont...
    Come on, do you REALLY want an iPod to be BETTER than your nokia?!? ;-)

    I'm currently having troubles playing WAV format on my phones: any clue about a free application for s60-2nd for this purpose?
    Message Edited by jumpjack on 26-May-2008 12:33 PM

    P.S.
    if you think being able to control your device using your phone is "just a funny thing"... then try thinking that:
    - any s60 phone can be easily programmed in python
    - any s60 phone can receive SMS
    - 160 GB (or more) Personal Video Recorders are available in the market
    - an old s60 model costs around 50$
    Sum these all together, and you'll get a ***remotely controllable (by SMS) PVR!!!*** ;-)

  • Jelly Bean update completely killed true hands free voice dialing.

    Regardless of the fact that S-Voice (as well as Google Voice dialing/search) is unable to recognize most of my contacts, it's also a fact that by definition, it cannot work as a true hands free voice dialer, which is defined as the ability to make a call without touching (or even seeing) the phone AT ALL.  This is due to the simple fact that neither S-Voice nor Google Voice dial/search allows you to say "yes" or "no" to a phone number confirmation prompt.  In other words, you need to see the screen at some point in order select the correct number to dial.  Prior to the Jelly Bean update, this issue was relatively easily solved by using a third party app -- I preferred an app called "Cyberon Voice Commander" -- to take over the voice dialing duties.  The first time you hit the Bluetooth button after installing the app, you could select the default program to respond to the BT button.  I simply selected the Cyberon Voice Commander app, and everything worked from this point forward -- I could dial a number without ever taking the phone out of it's case.
    With the Jelly Bean update, however, this is suddenly no longer possible because S-Voice completely takes over the Bluetooth button, and does not allow another app to take over as the default.  The "launch by default" section for S-Voice in the application manager is now greyed out, and says "no defaults set" for S-Voice even though S-Voice is set as the default program to launch when pressing the BT button.  The only "potential" solution is to completey "disable" S-Voice via the application manager, which does allow you to select Cyberon Voice Commander as the default BT button press app, but there are two problems with this.  First, the default resets when turning the phone on even though you select "always" for the CVC app.  This means that you have to re-select the third party app as the default BT button app EVERY time the phone is turned off.  Second, disabling S-Voice is not a solution because I still would like to use it for things OTHER than voice dialing.  Disabling it completely removes it from the menu, making it unusable even for things that it is better at.
    I cannot believe how hard S-Voice is being shoved down our throats.  Why would they make it mandatory?  The whole point of Android is that it's supposed to be "open" and allow users to individually decide on their own way of doing things -- i.e. to offer multiple approaches that suit your preferences rather than adopting a narrow minded "we decide what's best" attitude.  This is the whole reason that I moved away from Apple.  This S-Voice situation, however, is just ridiculous.  It's fine to push it as an "option," but please keep it OPTIONAL -- particularly given that it literally CAN'T do what other apps do (i.e. true hands free dialing.)

    A few things you can try ... turn off the phone, remove the SIM card, wait a few minutes, then reinsert the SIM card and re-boot the phone.  Maybe a fresh connection to the network will improve the signal/call quality.
    Do a system cache clear; it won't delete your data:
    Power down phone
    Hold volume up/down & power simultaneously until you see the Boot Mode Selection Menu
    Use volume down to navigate to 'Recovery', use volume up to select
    You should see screen with triangle and exclamation point next to an Android
    Press volume up/down simultaneously to go into system recovery
    Use volume rocker to navigate to 'wipe cache' and use power button to select
    Once finished, use volume rocker to navigate to 'reboot system now' and use power button to select
    If all else fails, back everything up, remove the SD card to be on the safe side, and factory reset the phone.  No, it's not a preferred option, but sometimes that is what it takes to 'clear out the cobwebs' after an operating system update.
