X61 and X6 Dockingstation

Hi,
I have a huge problem. My cd-rom is not working anymore. In control panel I can see the yellow sign for the CD-Rom... Unfortunately there's no driver to download and how can I do a Bios update of the Notebook, when the CD-rom is not working.
Can anyone help? Would really appreciate your suggestions...
Thank you very much

Hi,
I've finally found the solution. The drive is not working under Windows, in my case Vista.
go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929461/en-us
and follow the instructions for the registry entry, where 2 files have to be deleted. Be shure to follow exactely the description.
After restarting, the drive starts working perfectly...

  • Comparisons between X61s and X201s - and X201 and X201s

I have been very happy with my x61s since prchasing it in Jan 2008. However, I need to migrate to a new notebook, want to have a similar experience with the new machine and am therefore considering the X201 series. Can anyone give me a high-level comparison (I've reviewed the tech specs at lenovo.com already) between the x61s and the x201 series? I am also interested in the differences between the x201 and the x201s.
Finally, will the x61 docking base that I purchased for that notebook work on the x201 or x201s?
    Thanks!

All X61 models have the moulding in the body shell for a SIM slot, but they don't all have a SIM reader or antennas installed, let alone a 3G card.
Your 7666-B4G config shows as this....
    L7700(1.8GHz), 2GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 12.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel X3100, Intel 802.11agn wireless, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 8c Li-Ion, WinVista Business
... so, IMO, its unlikely it is WWAN-ready at any level.
My 7676-3PM came in this config:
    T7100(1.8GHz), 1GB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HD, 12.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel X3100, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, Fingerprint reader, 8c Li-Ion, WinVista Business
... and its very definitely not WWAN ready.

  • X61 and external mouse

Interesting (yet annoying) problem.  My external mouse won't work when the AC adapter is plugged in, but works fine on the battery.
Also, I'm STILL having problems with the UltraBase, and more specifically, the optical drive in the UB.  I've had to remove the drive in order to avoid the incessant popup nag.

As far as I've seen, Macs will work with any USB keyboard...

  • Battery compatibility between X31s and X61s

    Hi!
I own a X31s and X61s, and would like have a spare battery handy for travel. Before placing the order, I am wondering if the following battery can be used on both:
    * ThinkPad X60s Series 4 Cell Slim Line Battery
It is not cheap, so I would like to think twice before buying. Somehow I cannot find any information on the compatibility issue. Thank you for your help!

    jennyumaa, welcome to the forum,
unfortunately the batteries are definitely not interchangeable between X31 and X61 systems.
    Sorry

  • X61s TrackPointer and Mouse Too Sensitive In Powerpoint 2003

    Hello,
I have an X61s with Vista Business and am running PowerPoint 2003.  The TrackPoint pointer seems to be outrageously sensitive in this application - simply clicking on something is enough not only to highlight it, but also move the object slightly, even if the pointer didn't move.  This occurs even with an external mouse, and even with the external mouse's software suite loaded and enabled (Logitech SetPoint was loaded in an attempt to cure the external mouse behavior - it didn't help or hinder).
I have disabled pointer acceleration, and the pointer speed is smack in the middle of the scale.
As this is happening with both the mouse and the TrackPointer, gut feel says there's a setting somewhere to be tweaked.
I've searched the archives and can't find anything similar.  Anyone have any suggestions?
    TIA

Do you have Press-to-select enabled? I always disable it because I get unintended mouse clicks.
I'm using PowerPoint 2007 on my X61, and my wife uses PowerPoint 2003 on her X61s, and our TrackPoints behave normally. I'm pretty sure PowerPoint does not meddle with mouse settings.

  • X61 Speedstep and Fan problems

I have just got my X61 for a few days, some problems immediately concern me.
The first thing I noticed after running it for a few hours was that, the fan never stopped spinning! My machine comes with a Core 2 Duo T7500 2.20Ghz CPU. I have already set "Optimize fan control" to "Balance all parameters" and the fan never stops, even when the machine is in idle with the lowest CPU speed.
I did a search on forum.thinkpads.com and I found that many people have the same problem with their X61 and X61s too. The general solution is to turn to a program called tpfancontrol written by one of the forum members there. The program allows us to override BIOS fan control and set thredshold for when the fan kicks in. It works, but the problem is that even at the lowest fan setting allowed by the program, namely "1" ("0" is off), the fan is spinning at 3207 rpm and that is quite noisy.
I am a graduate student and I spend most of my time in my office (shared with other people) and in the library. The level of fan noise this machine generates will certainly disturb me and my colleages.
The second problem is about speedstep. Since I want to prevent the fan from spinning all the time, the first thing I did was to try to reduce the heat output when I am just serfing around and checking email. I installed the latest version of CPU-Z to monitor my CPU clock. I noticed that setting the CPU speed to "low" and "lowest" have no difference. Both setting clock my CPU speed to around 1596.5 MHz, with a multiplier of 8.0 and Bus speed 199.6 MHz. However, if I set CPU speed to "adaptive", my CPU can be clocked as low as 1197.5MHz, with a multiplier of 6.0 and Bus speed 199.6 MHz when it is in idle. Why can't I lower the multiplier to 6.0 and achieve a clock speed of 1197.5 MHz when I set the speed mode to "low" or "lowest" (and why are the two modes the same?)
I have already downloaded the latest drivers and all the thinkvantage updates. My questions and suggestions are:
    (1) What is happening in speedstep? Why "low" and "lowest" are the same? And why "adaptive" can achieve a clock speed and multiplier lower than "lowest"?
    (2) Fan problem, as noted above. It is a pity that we have to turn to a 3rd party program to solve the fan noise problem. Lenovo should add more flexible fan control functions to Power Manager.
    (3) How can I set my fan to run at a speed between off and 3207 rpm? I am using tpfancontrol to set my fan level to "1" when the CPU temperature reaches 55C, and off below that. What happens is that: 0 rpm -> heat builds up -> 55C, 3207 rpm -> after 10 seconds, cooled down -> 0 rpm -> heat builds up -> 55C, 3207 rpm ...and so on. The 3207 rpm is certainly no a pleasant sound in a quiet room.

If you have read my post on TPF you should know that I have already tried NHC and no it doesn't work. It can't even recognize the correct clock speed due to the fact that it cannot recognize the change in Bus Speed.
No there is no any Intel utility to control the speedstep. Power manager is a Lenovo Thinkvantage program and as I reported above, the "low" and "lowest" seem to be exactly the same, neither of them can reduce the multiplier to 6.
The reason why I am posting here, after getting no reply at TPF, is that apparently I have tried all the popular 3rd party softwares and none of them can solve my problems. It seems to me that the speedstep and fan problems require a BIOS update or an update to the power manager (or even a fan upgrade?), which I believe is something beyong the reach of a normal thinkpad user. Since this is the official forum of Lenovo, I am hoping that someone from Lenovo can answer my question and provide official solution, rather than asking me to try yet another 3rd party software that doesn't solve my problem.
At least I would expect a person from Lenovo can explain to me why the "low" setting seems exactly the same as the "lowest" setting, if it is not bugged.

  • PC3-10600 memory modules in ThinkPad x61?

    Hey everyone,
I own two thinkpads: X61 and T60. A friend of mine upgraded his thinkpad to 8 GB RAM, from 4, and offered to give me the Elpida memory modules. It's 4GB. I now have 4 GB in the X61, and 2 GB in the T60. I was thinking of installing the memory my friend gave me on the X61, and putting the current X61 modules in the T60, but the modules he gave me are pc3-10600. Will this run ok in the x61? I realize that is not going to run at the rated speed, but will it run ok, without any problems?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am pretty sure that both the T60 and X61 use DDR2 memory. What your friend gave you is DDR3 memory, which is not compatible, as they are not electrically or physically compatible.
Compare your ram with the one your friend gave you, you will see the "notch" is in a different place, preventing accidental mixup.

  • Should I upgrade my X61 or buy a new computer?

    Hello All,
This is my first post to this forum primarily because my X61 has been such a workhorse that I haven't needed help until now.  I love my X61--it's small, powerful, and does what I want it to do.  However, read on...
My X61 is 2 yrs old. I have completely outgrown the 100G harddrive. I also think I'm having a cooling fan issue--the fan is very noisy (sounds like it's going to come out of the case and take off into the 'verse.)  Sometimes when the noise gets very bad, the computer automatically shuts off; I presume this is because the fan is not adequately cooling the unit.  Also, when I first bought the machine, I cloned an XP machine onto this machine because many of the instrumentation software packages that I used for work required XP.  Until recently, the system functioned wonderfully but, now, I think Windows XP might be becoming unstable. Besides, Windows 7 is here now, since I no longer use most of the software that required XP, it might be time to upgrade Windows.
My question to all of you  more experienced computer people is:  Is the repair of these issues with the X61(upgrading the harddrive and repairing the fan; possibly upgrading to Windows 7) economically rational?
First, I will have to pay someone to do the work because I have no idea how to do this myself.
Second, there will be the costs of parts.
Third, I can purchase a 14" Sony Vaio with 500G harddrive, NVidia graphics, 4G system memory, etc for around $800; although I suspect that doesn't include an extended warranty or damage coverage--so let's say the new machine would cost $1000.
I suspect that repairing the X61 will cost at least half of that price.  However, there are reasons to keep the X61--it's been a gem of a machine and it's smaller than the Sony.
I feel that I'm lacking the insight needed to make an intelligent decision.
I would really appreciate any feedback/insight/advice that you might be able to give me.
    Thanks.

    Hi landonphd,
    Welcome to the Lenovo forum!
    Pro keeping X61
It will run Windows 7 just fine.
Larger hard drives are cheap (~$60) and easy (for a techie) to install.
The loud fan and occasional shutdowns may simply indicate that your ThinkPad's insides (particularly the heatsink that cools the processor) are clogged with dust. It's easy (for a techie) for open up the X61 and clean out the dust. If that doesn't fix the trouble, replacing the fan isn't that expensive, either. (Guessing ~$50.)
    You love it.
    Pro new laptop
Windows 7 is much cheaper when bundled with a new laptop, plus it's pre-installed.
New laptop comes with larger hard drive, as you point out.
Insides of new laptop will be squeaky clean, free of dust.
New laptop will be covered by warranty.
I belive either option could work out fine for you. Given your disinclination to work on the machine yourself, the easier path is probably to just get a new laptop. That option probably won't cost you all that much more, either: your X61 is still quite a desirable machine, you could sell it for a reasonable amount to recoup some of your costs.
Given your positive experience with the X61, have you considered Lenovo's newest X series, the X200, X200s, and X200 tablet?
    Best regards,
    Frank

  • Blue-ray reader for lenovo x61s

Hi i am new to the lenovo forum i am looking if someone can help me my question is can i get a blue ray reader or blue ray burner for my lenovo x61s and if so can someone direct me to the correct one that would fit my model Thanks......
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Blu-ray playback, if that's what your're interested in, probably won't be that great in the X61.  The X61s low voltage CPU probably doesn't have enough processing power for smooth playback.  The graphics card on the X61s unlike newer integrated GPUs cannot help with the decoding.  It's all left to the CPU, which struggles cause it's getting no help from the GPU.

  • X61 Help installing ssd onto XP X61 machine

So I purchased a Samsung 840 ssd for my 7673-74u X61. My plan:
Fresh install of XP 32 bit
    Install drivers
Install GT1 diagnostic software for BMW
Well I inserted the ssd into the X61 and the BIOS recognizes the ssd. In the BIOS settings I move the ssd up to #1 in the priority boot order. AHCI is enabled. Good.
I insert the XP disc into the optical drive in the dock (X61 has no opti dock). Windows runs through some driver installs then asks if I want to install XP to press enter. As soon as I do hit enter there's a msg that reads "no hard drive found".
I've attempted this 3 times with the same result and have given up for the day.
Can anyone give me instructions on how to install this ssd?

I know this is not what you want to hear, but I'll say it anyway:
XP on SSD is a very bad idea in my opinion, especially on a machine that is perfectly capable of running W7.
There is no TRIM support in XP, and there's way too much tweaking involved to get this combination to perform in a borderline acceptable manner.
If you *must* run XP for whatever reason, forget about AHCI and just install the OS in "compatibility" mode. The main reason for AHCI (enabling TRIM support) is a non-issue in XP anyway.
    Good luck.
    Cheers,
    George

  • X61s: lost Thinkpad welcome screen

I just got an L2440p external monitor to use with my X61s (and T60p.) After messing about with this combination I no longer get the standard Thinkpad welcome screen when I power up the X61s. I suspect there is some conflict between the built-in Windows screen property settings, Intel's GMA driver/applet and various ThinkVantage software like Presentation Director. Toggling Fn+F7 doesn't seem to help. The X61s runs Vista Business.
Any ideas on how to get the Thinkpad welcome screen back?

    > are you missing the welcome screen when powering the X61s with or without the L2440p attached?
Either way. During power-on the screen remains blank all the way until Windows Login. Even the standard Windows boot progress bar is absent.
     > what do you have set as the default boot display device?   this can be accessed in the BIOS
That's the problem. I can't get into the BIOS because I can't see the ThinkPad screen. (Well actually I can, by pressing the ThinkVantage button, but I can't see what comes up thereafter.)
BTW my T60p and earlier ThinkPads all had a Configuration Utility where among other things I could forcedisplay settings. I notice this utility is AWOL on the X61s.
Edit: My error. I had the L2440p powered off but not disconnected. After I disconnected the VGA cable the Welcome screen came up on the X61s and I was able to go into BIOS Config to set Display to "Both."  Now if I power-on with no external display the Welcome screen comes up on the X61s. But if the L2440p is connected, even though I set "Both" the Welcome screen comes up only on the L2440p. What's going on?

  • Application Migration to X61

    Hello,
I am upgrading from a T42 to an X61 and I was wondering if Lenovo had some software for moving applications (e.g. MS Office), settings and data from the T42 to the X61 or is my only option to pay $50 to PC Mover program. I do not have original CDs for a lot of programs on my T42.
    Manish

For settings and data you can use SMA, System Migration assistant, (free for migrating to TPs), it will not move the programs, they need to be installed. It needs to be installed on both machines and you can transfer by creating a file or over network. It is installed as a standard TVT, however you should ensure that you have the same version installed on both TPs.
It is also possible to migrate the complete installation, but that's a little bit more complicated and cost a bit more.

  • X61t upgrade and auto-rotate not working

I just bought an x61t off trademe for $50. I've always coveted one because my old x60s was the best thinkpad I've ever owned. This one is solid and underused. I intend to upgrade to win 8 later, and add some more ram and  swap in a SSD. Just use for text input and browsing.
My problems are finding a user manual/guide, finding any thinkvantage legacy upgrade and, the biggest problem is auto rotate and tablet interface buttons don't seem to be working.
Looking on Lenovo sites hasn't been helpful in finding any of this information or solutions. It may be obsolete and unavailable.
can I download button drivers from anywhere? Any other solutions you can help with are appreciated.

    Hi syrahnose,
