X61 Does not Shutdown

Hello,
I have an x61 that will not shutdown after selecting start shutdown until I unplug the power and pull the battery.. It seems like it starts to shut down, the screen goes black but the hard drive is still working as is the CDROM..This is actually happening with two laptops an x61 and T400, both laptops are running Vista Business SP1.. Anybody know how to get these things to shut down properly?

hmm, the problem now is that i cant even access my desktop...i'm asked to register each time i turn my computer on and my desktop is completely blank if i close that window. so i have no option other than shutting it off. (i have to use the internet and computer at work now to read my email etc)how do i run the disk utilits repair if i cant gain access into my computer?
yeah the guy at the store said he found that the new leopard improved his wifi connection and he had less drop outs but now i think he was probably jsut pushing a sale and BSing me!
appreciate ur help!

  • Computer restarts (does not shutdown) when iPod is connected

This issue has probably been covered in these forums,
but I didn't read anything about this.
My Computer (G4 on Tiger) restarts (does not shutdown) when my iPod Classic 30GB is connected
via USB. Is that normal? Everytime I shutdown my computer and I forget to disconnect my iPod
it restarts. The problem is that my G4 is connected to my sound system and I hear the loud opening BONG sound when the OS boots up. Very annoying, and dangerous for my speaker system...
I know there are third party utilities that enables users to kill that start up sound but if I repair permissions, clean PRAM, etc those settings are removed and the original Apple factory settings come back. Is there any way to kill that sounds PERMANENTLY! with Mac OS Tiger.
    Thanks

Hmm... You might want to consider posting this in the OS X forum as well. I know with my MacBook (running Leopard), if I mute the system volume prior to shutting down the computer, the next time I boot up, I don't hear the startup chime.
It's not normal for your computer to restart itself coinciding with iPod actions. Do you have any other software applications installed that interact with the iPod that might be causing this?

  • Snow Leopard sometimes does not shutdown

I've just bought MacBook with pre installed MacOS 10.6.1, then updated it to 10.6.2. Sometimes (approximately 1 of 5 times) it does not shutdown - there are only my wallpaper and active mouse pointer. I've been waiting for a long time, then just turned off it with holding power button. It seems I have a problem after high hard drive activity (a lot of copy, delete and move operation), but I am not sure. Could you help me, please?

To make sure we understand everything correctly, you are saying that when you start up from the Snow Leopard DVD & run its copy of Disk Utility from the Utilities menu, it shows only the DVD installer disc itself in the list on the left of Disk Utility's window? There is nothing else there?
Also, what are you booted from when you try to make an image of the installer DVD, the DVD itself or something else? Are you using Disk Utility or something else to make the image?
This seems very weird for sure. If you were running from some hard disk copy of the OS, I would suspect that its copy of Disk Utility or some OS support file was corrupted, but if you are doing this from the DVD that is extremely unlikely unless the DVD itself is physically damaged.
Apart from that, pretty much the only thing left is a damaged hard drive or other hardware failure in your Mac.

  • Imac does not shutdown

My IMac does not shutdown through the normal operating procedures.  I have to press the reset/shutdown button in the back.  Plus it constantly freezes up.  I have over 100GB of free space.  Total capacity is approx 500GB

Open up Disk Utility, and select Macintosh HD on the left, then click on "Verify Disk" in the bottom right. See if it checks out or not.

Is Preview open? Copy/paste the following into Terminal in Utilities and hit return. Look through the output, which may give you a clue as to what is open.

  • My Mac does not shutdown properly and is all around glitchy. Any solution?

When Lion became available I downloaded it immediately. I also extracted the install DMG and burnt it to a DVD and a bootable USB stick (thank God).
I have a new iMac 2.5GHz i5 base model (500GB HD 4GB RAM) and I was using Snow Leopard and my Mac shutdown quickly, booted up quickly, and I never had any glitches in the GUI. After upgrading to Lion my system took forever to bootup and shutdown. Even if I don't tick the box to "Reopen windows when logging back in". Sometimes it takes 2-3 minutes to boot, and 1-2 minutes to shutdown. I timed SL 10.6.8 before upgrading and bootup was about 40 seconds and shutdown was about 5 seconds to instant.
Also, after Lion was installed, all the page swipes in Safari and from full screen apps was extremely glitchy and sluggish. Sometimes the screen would get stuck between the apps or an app and desktop. Sometimes the iMac would just plain freeze with the beachball of death. So I thought I had something leftover from SL that was fudging my system. So I booted from the USB install image I made, re-partitioned the HD and reformatted it (I re-partitioned to get rid of the hidden recovery partition and the bootcamp partition). Then I re-installed Lion as a fresh copy. I re-installed all my apps but didn't use bootcamp or any VMs yet.
Now after a clean install, my GUI is no longer glitchy or sluggish. Transitions between fullscreen apps and the desktop is smooth. However, my shutdown and startup issues still remain (and are a little worse). If I tell the computer to shutdown, no matter I click "reopen windows" or uncheck "reopen" windows, it can take 1-2 minutes to shutdown. Also, after being off all night, when I boot my computer, sometimes it will come to the login screen and ask for my password (but I have set it up for automatic login and not to prompt for password on screensaver or wakeup also). I also did not encrypt my drive. So I cannot figure out why it asks me to login. After I give it my password and sign in, the menu bar is not translucent and the airport does not function. Then I must restart Lion and everything is okay again (except it takes 2-3 minutes to reboot again).
I already tried repairing permissions, I downloaded the beta for the latest Onyx last night and cleared out all the caches and told it to verify and rebuild all the scripts. Only about 10 things were repaired in the permissions list. The disk passed verification, and I am not getting any mysterious messages in console. So what is going on with booting and sometimes requiring me to login with a password and booting into a system with messed up menus and non functional airport? I don't want to start my iMac, login, and then restart every time I want to use it.
I have been working with Macs since OS 8 and I have currently have 2 PPC Macs running 10.5.8, and 2 Intel Macs (one is still on 10.6.8 until I solve this Lion problem). I have even played with hackintoshes on my netbooks and in VMware before. I am pretty versed in OS X, but I am at a loss to figure out what is going on with Lion. I don't see any unusual messages in the console or any error messages. When on the phone with Apple care they insist the shutdown issue is not a problem. But the startup concerns me most, since it asks me to login, the I must restart anyways to get it back. It acts like a Windows sytem waking up from hibernation and not loading all the proper drivers.
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to be concise about the issue. Anyone have any suggestions? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks.

The funniest part of the whole situation, Apple Care explained it to me as some kind of feature. The told me how to adjust the time when my computer sleeps and recommend I don't shut it down, let it sleep and "instant wake". I would bet if you called them about your Macbook, they would suggest you just close the lid and let it sleep rather than shutting it down.
Basically shutdown and restart have a problem and the solution is to not shutdown is how they explained it to me. They kept saying buzz words like "instant on" and "fast wakeup". My computer already could sleep and wakeup fast, but now shutdown and restart don't work right. I called them 3 times about it, but since they use these buzzwords, sounds like Lion is meant for a Macbook Air or a Mac with an SSD. If you have a normal hard disk, some of the saving/versions/resume features take too long to be written to the disk on shutdown. And when you start again, it takes a long time to reload the system to it's previous point.
Even if I uncheck the box to reopen windows on next start, it reopens them anyways.
If they can't give me a better explaination or some kind of fix, I will have to go back to Snow Leopard. I use my Mac in a production environment and depend on stability. They assured me before I upgraded that it would be stable and all the new saving and versions features could help my productivity. So far it's not helping me and downright annoying. You need to close all your windows before you close the program... if you have 5 windows open in terminal or textedit... every time you launch, they will launch all those windows. I just really want versions, not resume it seems.
But I can deal with it opening a million windows, just can't take it getting stuck on booting or not shutting down properly. This is a "feature" that should be fixed. LOL

  • Macbook does not shutdown

it's kind of weird that i often experience this, especially when i'm using wireless broadband: macbook does not shut down after i click shutdown..it just remain on with the desktop image on it, all other icons and the dock are gone though..i tried clicking the "command-option-esc" command to force quit it but still, it does not turn off..my only last recourse is to take off the battery so to shut it down..
pls help, i don't want to keep on doing this because it surely will affect either my battery or my hardware or, even worse, both..
and also, from the very start, after setting up my bluetooth in the systems preferences, it does not seem to work with any other bluetooth devices that i saved on it..

    Hello coaobrien
    Welcome To Apple Discussions
Follow "i love my macbo...s' advise.
And in the future don't take out the battery, try pressing down and hold the powerbutton for about 5-10sec. until the Macbook shuts down.
Another helpful tip... In the Mac world there really is no need to power-off your Mac unless you are upgrading and the OS requires it, or if yo are experiencing issues sometime a shutdown and power-up can clear issues and if your Mac is going to be away from AC power For awhile, like days, such as traveling. Then you may think about powering off. Other then that you really just need to shut the lid and let it sleep.

  • Some Applications does not Shutdown

By the time accumulating updates unfortunately I'm also accumulating some smaller annoyances. I'm using Arch64, GeForce 8600 GTS, Fluxbox.
Some applications does not shut down normally anymore and I can not tell any pattern (Neverball, Scribus, Mplayer). Once shutting down the application window freezes and one CPU goes to 100%. Killing via sigterm works. What could be the reason?
In addition there is no more functional screensaver on my office computer since the last NVIDIA update. xscreensaver-demo shows an empty frozen window. In case I let any screensaver start up, X is frozen and I must kill the process on another console.
Anybody out there has magic ideas?
    Thanks!

    Thank you for the suggestion!
Very safely I have trouble with Scribus, Mplayer and Neverball. One has Qt, another sound and the last 3D. I couldn't find anything in common. Another point is that on my notebook I have none of those troubles. I rather suppose it to be an interaction with somethin else. At my office, my home directory is on a NFS mount and most working files as well. This might make a difference, but why not every computer with the same Arch does the same trouble? There must be some individual difference.
What actually happens during application shutdown? Sigkill from the console ALWAYS works, but closing the application in any "normal" way fails.
Starting from a console generally shows you good startup problems, but not so much shutdown.
    I will check the logs.

  • Cluster node does not shutdown after "received shutdown"

    Hi,
We put together an automated restart process that restarts cluster nodes across multiple servers. To shutdown a node, we use the Coherence MBeanConnector and invoke stop on object: name=Management, nodeId=<member id>. This works for most cases where member's log output shows "received shutdown", partition transfer messages and after the last primary partitions have been transferred the VM exits.
For one node however, the VM did not exit. From looking at the log file for this particular node, the primary partitions were transferred, the distributedCache thread stops showing output, but the Cluster thread continues to show activity.
Note that this node was the last VM to stop on the given server.
Has anyone seen this before or ideas on why this particular node did not exit after receiving the shutdown message?
    Thanks!
    Marcel.

    Hi Marcel -
Please take a thread dump (via "kill -3" or "ctrl-break") on the VM that does not stop correctly. Coherence does not shut the VM down; it simply shuts itself down. If a non-daemon thread is running on the VM, then it may not exit. However, we won't know that until we see the thread dump.
    Peace,
    Cameron Purdy | Oracle Coherence

  • G20 Does not Shutdown

Quite often my G20 does not close down properly .....help!

  • Photoshop does not shutdown properly?

I have the trial version of Adobe Photoshop CS5 installed, along with several trial plugins such as NIK, and OnOne. When I close Photoshop I get the error Adobe Photoshop CS5 has stopped responding. I have the option sometimes to debug and send an error report, but most of the time I have to cancel it and force shutdown. I am getting Event ID 1000 from Windows Logs. I have a Dell Studio XPS 1645 Windows 7 Pro 64bit machine. Any other information needed I can provide, just ask. Any and all help with this issue is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey Chris, I have Drive Genius professional, it and Windows 7 keep all my drivers up to date. Can you think of any reason why a graphics driver would be making Adobe close down improperly? I do not understand how a brand new system, not even 5 months old, with all new and up to date software and drivers, could be causing such an issue? It is only with Adobe, it continues to happen even when plug-ins are disabled.
I may try uninstalling and reinstalling a second time.
I read a while ago while googling, about a script that saved all Adobe settings for you? Is there something that truly does this? I have alot of brushes and custom actions and workspaces that I would like to backup, so far I have been doing it manually by going to the locations of each thing, but if there was a script or software that can do this for me that would be great.
Thanks again for the help guys!

  • Pixma MG 6230 does not shutdown. Gives wait shutdown message all night long.

Recently I have been unable to shutdown printer.  Have pressed buttons but get message that it is shutting down and to wait.  After 12 hours, printer still has same message.  I cut power to unit and repower up and it restarts but tells me not to kill power unless I use proper shutdon procedures.  I updated firmware to 2.010 but still have same problem.  I have had the printer for 1.5 years or so and this started recently.

Could not reach the wall outlet but did remove some items plugged into the strip and tried it.  It shutdown OK.  Will see if it does so when I close down my computer tonight.  If not then that was the problem.  If it does act up then I will be back. Thanks
