X61 easyserv issue

To make a long story short overheating has killed my x61 type 7675 as the mainboard, fan, and harddrive need to be repaired I paid over $575 for this since I am out of warranty even though this is caused by design fault of the X61 series and now the parts needed to fix are on backorder and they will not give me a ETA I use this machine for my business and that’s unacceptable any one have any suggestions I already tried Pming mark with no response.

rkheyfets,
I appreciate your frustration...I've responded to your PM and will try to help you tomorrow.   Certainly nobody expects for their system to come back in worse shape than when it was sent in.
If you can give us a bit more time here, I'm sure we can help you get this resolved.
Best regards,
Mark

  • X61S monitor issue

Hi everyone, I'm the happy owner of an X61S Thinkpad. Well, not quite happy at the very moment I must say. I've had this laptop for quite a while already. In fact, I'm not using it as primary computer since 2012 or something. Recently I decided to convert it to some kind of HTPC.Because it was becoming slower and slower, I decided to acquire a "cheap SSD" (almost succeeded). Thing is, I'm blind. And I didn't know my laptop's screen didn't work anymore. I think I've hit it somehow. The fact is, the integrated display is dead. The up-right corner allows  one to read a few lines but not the entire BIOS menu. Definitly not. Thus the sighted friend of mine that's helping me out with the new install and I decided to connect an external monitor. ... Which did, sadly, not help. And this is my question: how can I force the laptop's output to be the external VGA monitor? We tryed both connecting it to the internal VGA and the docking station. nor worked.
My friend managed to enter the "BIOS > config > display" menu, but because of the broken display he can't see enough lines to make the change. We aren't actually certain of what's being displayed at all. It might as well be an error message of some sort... So, if one has got a solution for me, I'd be the happiest guy on Earth for a second or two! Which is wonderful, isn't it?  Thanks! Regards, Chris

    Hi THc,

  • X61 Docking Issues

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone else has seen this issue.
Under the Presentaion Director, the check box Immediately apply this display scheme is grayed out.  I've been trying different updates and settings, but I can't seem to get it working.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Hello! Has anyone found solution to this problem. I use X61s with vista and X6 UltraBase 42W4635.
Presentation director updated 10.10.2008. But still this option is grey and I cant use it. Every time I have to switch scheme manually.

  • X61 Heat issues

I'm currently having overheating issues with my X61 when I run games.  I have a base fan running and have installed the the TPFC program to run my computer fan.  However, my computer still gets up to 80 degrees C and then shuts down.  Is there anyway I can further reduce the heat or at least change the settings so it goes to 85 or 90 degrees before shutting down.  I know my CPU has a max heat rating of 100 degrees C according to Intel so running it that high shouldn't be a problem.  I just hate having my computer shut down without warning due to the heat.  Thanks in advance.

Are you using tpfancontrol to set the fan speed to max or are you running it slower than by default?
I've run mine for hours to crunch numbers and, while it gets warm, it never shut down due to heat. Is your ambient temp excessive? Did you try to blow out dust from the fan?

  • X61 Standby issue with XP when undocked

    Hi,
Just did a HDD upgrade on my most excellent X61 and after a clean install of XP, I now have an issue with the Standby functionality. Here's the symptoms:
    1. If I restart while X61 is docked, I get normal startup and standby mode works both when docked and after proper undocking procedure. Works as expected.
    2. If I restart undocked, the Standby option in the "Turn Off Computer..." menu is grayed out and sure enough, never goes into standby. I have of course tried to modify power options in the Control panel, but it never gives me the option to go into Standby mode when lid is closed.
I do have dual boot on my X61 with Debian Linux and that supports Standby, no issues.
So, after some background reading, seems there is a possibility that I missed a driver during installation and some HW is not letting the X61 enter standby when it is not docked.
Any ideas which driver this may be??? Though I'd ask before having to through and try to install ALL drivers again
thanks in advance for any input...
    Jeff

Just tried installing lots of stuff I probably don;t need with System Updater. Now I've got:
    - Still no standby when undocked
    - 2 instances of thinkvantage toolbox that does nothing but try to repair "installed fonts" and fails
    - ThinkPad Video Features (Intel GM965) keeps recurring in the updates. When I try, it says successfully installed, but ???
    Any ideas?
    thanks

    Hi deans!
Sorry you're not getting good information on the battery for your X61.
The Slim Line Battery (40Y6999) only fits the X60s and X61s. As you have discovered, it is too long for the X61 (and X60).
42T4505 is a marketing park number for a 4 Cell Enhanced Capacity Battery. The replacement part is the 4 Cell Enhanced Capacity Battery (40Y7001). It fits the X60 and X61 (and with a supplied spacer for the length, the X60s and X61s).
There is also a larger 8 Cell High Capacity Battery  (40Y7003) which fits them all (with spacer for the X60 and X60s).
So, you are correct, the replacement for your existing battery is the 40Y7001.
Here's the online store battery page info for the X6x.
    Hope this helps!

  • X61 Battery issue

    Dear Lenovo representative,
    I've purchased a lenovo X61 a year ago.
I'm having problems with my battery.
I want to send you the battery so you can examine & fix it.
I wanted to know what is the shipping address. In addition, I wanted to know if
I can send it from my home country of israel and have it sent back to a
    California address.
    Thanks a lot,

Moderator edit: Masked serial number to prevent mis-use. Well spotted lead_org!

Please remove your laptop serial number to prevent misuse by other people.
If the battery is within one year warranty, then you get it replaced.
If it is out of warranty then you maybe eligible for a free replacement (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/NEW-Battery-Tip-Applicable-to-some-T-X-R-model...)
But Lenovo doesn't take back battery for examination unless there is some serious safety defect that they don't know about, even then, they would usually use IBM/Lenovo ISrael to deal with such cases.
you did not state what sort of problem you are having with the battery, not charging or short battery life. Also it would be useful that you tell us about the charge cycle, design capacity and full charge capacity and the brand of the cell (i.e. Sanyo, Sony or Panasonic, etc).

  • X61 charging issue

I bought a (basically new) x61 a few days ago. The problem is that when I'm using the system and it's plugged in, the battery won't charge. If it says the battery is at 50% when I turn it on, it stays at 50%, but windows says it's charging. When the system is off, the battery charges fine. Is this normal? My other laptops charge the battery while I'm plugged in and using the system.....

  • X61 LCD Issues

    Hello,
I just bought a used x61 from USA and when I turned it on I noticed that the LCD has a stuck pixel (it lights red on black background) placed in the middle of the display.
The seller convinced me that when he sent it, the display didn't have any stuck pixels. So obviously it(stuck pixel) is new.
By now two days have passed since I started a software for cleaning stuck pixels but still without result. Is there anybody who also had had the same problems? And how you have solved them?
The main question: I saw that there are several offers on eBay for new LCD screens (with price around 100$) but what is your opinion for them? Are they as good and as reliable as the original one?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Daniel

It happens, even an LCD with no problems can develop a dead or stuck pixel.
    FWIW:
Here is some information regarding the Lenovo (Thinkpad line) policy on bad pixels:
"The thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal display (LCD) for notebook computers contains many TFTs. The presence of a small number of missing, discolored, or lit all the time dots or pixels is characteristic of TFT LCD technology due to manufacturing process for such technology irrespective of manufacturer.
If your LCD has 2 or less visible defective pixels, it should not be considered faulty. However, if your LCD has 3 or more visible defective pixels, it will be deemed as defective by Lenovo and is replaceable upon request, if within the warranty period.
    Affected configurations
This policy applies for all ThinkPad computers purchased starting Jan 1, 2008. Please contact your Lenovo Service representative for further assistance."
I have owned many Thinkpads and I can say I had ONE machine that had a stuck pixel similar to yours. It was a T42p. However rare, they do happen. I have seen other laptops develop bad pixels, however the occurence seems to be less frequent with current LCD designs.
Regardin eBay, it is a hit an miss! There are many factors that amount to getting a "good display", if they are "lenovo" branded (with FRU) then the odds for them started as any new part. You might get a new LCD and it might die within days or weeks, or get a used beat to hell and back one (I did once) and it will outlive the motherboard and make its way into another system.Keep in mind that there are not a lot of "LCD" manufacturers, what they do have is a "quality control"process that will assign better glass, etc to different "customers". As always YMMV...

  • Error fan x61 issue

I have placed 2 motherboards into the x61 and have had the same error message 2, error fan and a beep. It does not allow me to enter the Bios or run PC Doctor.
The documentation downloaded from your website - X60, X60s, X61 and X61s.pdf gave the information 'Symptom or error FRU or action, in sequence Fan error. 1. Fan. 2. Thermal grease. 3. System board'.
As the motherboard turned up with fan, CPU and the MCH where already in place and the fan connected, found that this was an odd message to get when the motherboards 'Serviceable used Part' OQC OK.
Please can you advise me on what to do next - Keep sending back the motherboard until I get one that works or am I making a mistake?

    Hi,
We have exactly the same issue. Three times got replacement board with FAN ERROR.
Did You, eventualy, solved problem or waited for not broken board?

  • X61s AC Adaptor issues

    Hi I have an X61s
I've been looking to buy a new AC adaptor and have been told you have to watch what one you buy as the output can seriously damage your battery/machine etc.
The one i've seen is marked as 'FRU P/N 92P1157' now this is listed in the Thinkpad Hardware manual as compatible with models: "Models-CTO, xxA, xxB, xxC, xxG, xxH, xxK, xxM, xxQ, xxV, xxT".
A couple of things bother me firstly someone once told me about watching the output of the adaptor, as i bought this machine second-hand i was initially given a lenovo adaptor '90W-20V : FRU P/N 92P1104 with output 20v 4.5amps' now I'm wondering firstly is this AC adaptor safe?
The adaptor i want to buy is '65W-20V FRU P/N 92P1157 with output 20V 3.25amps' which I've been told is a sort of travel adaptor because of the smaller size.  Now this adaptor is listed in my Hardware manual, but i do not understand the model numbers associated with it: 'Models-CTO, xxA, xxB, xxC, xxG, xxH, xxK, xxM, xxQ, xxV, xxT' none of these seem to correspond with my laptop: 'X61s 7667-CTO'.
Also the difference between outputs with this and the one i have, the one i own is 4.5amps output, and the one i want to buy is 3.25amps output, is this an issue?
    Any advice please......

92P1157 is the correct adapter for your system.   i've highlighted 'CTO' in red to show that this does in fact correspond with your system.
all you need to find is the 65W adapter from lenovo.   this isn't a "travel" adapter, per se, but instead the adapter for systems with integrated intel graphics.

  • X61 Extended Display - reconnect issue - Ctrl+F7 is NOT available when I reconnect to monitor

    I use an X61 running XP SP2.
When I am at my desk, I connect the laptop to my 24" monitor via VGA cable.
Via Ctrl+F7, I can modify my display settings and receive options such as:
    - Notebook only
    - Same display
    - Extended display
All of these work fine.  However, just recently, after I disconnect (either using Ctrl+F7 or simply unplugging the VGA connector - both end up with the same result) and later try to re-connect, when I press Ctrl+F7, no menu option appears.
When I go to Control Panel | Display, I can 'see' the monitor is connected and I can 'extend' display to the desktop monitor BUT cannot set-up 'same display' from here.
The only option that works is to restart the system and then Ctrl+F7 works fine again.
I do not believe that I have made any changes to the system that would warrant this change (however, there may have been a recent automatic MS XP update that was loaded).
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this?  Do I need to update anything related to the system?

Win 7 can't shut down, it reboot PC right after it has shut down!
I've tried the following before and it worked for once only ...
    Step 1:
Try this:  Press (Windows Key) + R (keyboard key) ... the Windows key is between the Ctrl and Alt key. SO press Windows (Start) key + R key to bring up the "RUN" menu.
    Step 2:
In the "RUN" menu, type in "regedit", then press the Enter key
    Step 3:
In the regedit, find and search by this keyword: "PowerdownAfterShutdown" ... it should be located in:
    Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
But once I've tried to manually browse to the above location and couldn't find any "Winlogon" in it, not until I used the find and search feature!
    Step 4:
Double Click on "PowerdownAfterShutdown" to bring up it's entry menu.
    Then,
Change it to "0" if it is "1" OR
Change it to "1" if it is "0".
      I found it's "0" before I changed it to 1.
    And hit the Enter key.
    Step 5:
Then restart the computer. Once it has reboot the PC to Windows' desktop, shut it down again. It should be able to shut down properly now and then ... NEVER!
    Here's how to "NUT" down:
Look for "ShutdownWithoutLogon" in the regedit, set it to "1"
also set "PowerdownAfterShutdown" to "1" as well.
Each time you want to shut down PC, you need to log off first. Then at the log in/off screen, to the bottom right corner there is a SHUT DOWN button, mouse click it to shut down PC! That works for hell !
    DEATH COMES SLOW !!!

  • X61s: Power Management issues and related questions

    1)  My problems started when I upgraded to PM 3.5:  system instability, overheating, and battery run-down.  I finally eliminated PM 3.5 and it is running better, but still seems to be running more hot than before.
    2) Question: can I take the battery out when running on AC current?
    3) Also, do the batteries for the X61 also fit for the X61s?
    Richard

    1) download TPfancontrol and check your system temp and fan speed.
    2) Yes, but not recommended as the battery acts as a UPS, which prevents your laptop from shutdown if there is an accidental plug pull from the ac socket, or brown out/black out.
    3) yes.

  • X61 7675-CTO Fan Issues

    Hi,
I have a question about the fans in my X61.  I have sent my laptop back Lenovo twice now to have the fans replaced.  It usually works for a month or 2 afterwards.  I was wondering if there is anyway that I can just get a bunch of the fans sent to me.  I am tired of having to send my laptop back to be serviced only to have the fans break again....It is extrememly frustrating and to complicate things, I have moved to Mexico, so sending my laptop back has become even more painful....
    Thanks!

    Squirm,
I can see how that would be frustrating.   Are the fans failing in exactly the same way?  Do you get an error or do the fans just not run?   What's going on?
The fan and heat sink are built together on these I believe, so the part cost is not completely trivial, so we don't send them out in bulk "just in case".    But really, you shouldn't have back to back fails.
If the symptoms are the same, then it could be environmental, or it could be some bad parts (we should investigate), or it could be that there is something else associated that is causing the failures.
I'd like to help... can you tell us more?

  • X61 OS install issue- keeps doing normal start-up

Alright, so ive got my Ubuntu disc in, but the computer does a normal start up, and doesnt start os install.
I went to bios and made "usb-disc" first priority. But still nothing...
    what am I doing wrong...?
    Thinkpad X61 7675-A48. 2.5 Ghz, 4 GB ram, 160 GB hdd.

    Then do it this way:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks, or Yosemite
OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
