X61s Bios shows 4 gig memory, System Prefs shows only 3....

I've got an X61s, and I just installed two 2 gig SODIMMs of PC2-5300 667 MHz memory..... The Bios shows 4 gig installed, but when I use the System function in the Control Panel, it only shows 3 Gig.... Any clue what's up?

Yes. You're using a 32-bit version of XP or Vista, which can only use up to about 3GB max. Install a 64-bit version if you want to use all 4GB.

X61 BIOS Flash Led to Inoperable System

After owning (and loving) my X61 for about a year, I started getting the dreaded blue screen of death this morning. I researched the Stop error (0X0000008E) an downloaded a BIOS update from Lenovo.
According to the software, the update was successful. On restart, I made it to the "Press the blue ThinkVantage button..." screen. The fan began to run at a very high speed and neither the F1 key or the ThinkVantage key worked to escape the hangup.
I let this run for about an hour before pulling power to the machine. Now, when plugged in and/or on battery, I get cannot power on. It seems as if I now own a $1500 door stop.
I've pressed the power button x10 and then held for 25 seconds to discarge capacitors after unplugging the battery and ac adaptor. Still no power when the battery and/or ac adaptor is plugged back in.
How do I troubleshoot this?

Deleted column from spaces leaves System Prefs in limbo

HELP! This is my work machine. Someone deleted one of my columns of Spaces, now System Prefs is only visible when Spaces is activated. Example:
System Prefs appears in the Upper left, but not the actual window. I activate Spaces and and the windows shrink back to show my 3 spaces and the System Prefs window is floating above full size, but I can't click on it. Clicking on it only activates the Space that is below where I clicked, as if it were invisible. PLEASE HELP! How can I get my lost apps back?

homedirectory means your home directory, the folder that looks like a house named with your short user name. Inside of that is a folder called Library, inside of that is Preferences. That is where the file is located.
Did you go into the wrong Library?

Board BIOS shows "actual usage" 3.2 gigs memory, "physical" 4 gigs

Just got the P35 Platinum Combo, love the board for my HTPC. Windows shows only 3 gigs of memory as well as stats in BIOS something like "actual usage" - "physical memory" shows 4 gigs. Not sure what the problem is.

The Mac uses a highly-parameterized universal Driver for every display. The parameters are set at certain times when a query is sent to your display. The display MUST answer with its name and capabilities, or the screen stays dark. A TV set that is off or "not paying attention" because it is set to a different port when the query occurs will rarely answer, and so will often remain dark.
You can use tools in the System Report to see whether your display has been detected at all. If it has, the report will look something like this, but its name will appear:
The times when the query is sent are:
• at Startup
• at wake from sleep
• when the Mac-end of the cable is inserted
• when using the Option ( Detect Displays ) button in displays preferences

I followed the iCloud instructions and turned on Macbook Pros' system prefs to "find my mac", turned on iPhone4s's "location services" and set up iCloud, etc. In the "Find my iphone" tab of my new iCloud account (on my Macbook Pro) my iPhone4s still won't show—but my macbook does show. I had my iPhone4s set up at the phone store (2 days ago) and It receives gmail, my contacts and calender entries, the weather, etc. I installed the "Find iPhone" app from iTunes on the iPhone4s, synched to iTunes, even reset the phone, but the only device that gets located is my Macbook Pro. OK, I figured it out...I deleted the iCloud account off my iPhone (Settings, iCloud, Delete Account), and then added iCloud back in (Settings, iCloud, SignIn)....and then my email (iCloud) and "Find my phone" features worked! Nice!!!!

System Prefs show Airport "OFF" but in menu bar I can turn on... pls look

Good day.
System Profiler sees the Airport card however shows no network. (This has been running with no problems for months)
System Prefs, Network shows the Airport card as "OFF" even tho I can turn it "on" up on the menu bar. (it takes two times to turn it on via the network bar)
It still cannot see the network. (I am 802.11n everywhere and I'm using my MBP on the network I've been using for months)
The bottom line is I can't get my MacPro 3.0Ghz to see the network and the system profes show it's on even tho I can turn it on and off via the network bar.
Note: I've also plugged in a airport express via the Mac Pro's enet port and it simply cannot see it.
Any advise please.

I am having a very similar problem. Did you find any fixes for this?
I have a snow base station and have no problems connecting to it with a clamshell iBook running OS X. But with my PowerBook G4, whenever I turn Airport on and try to access the base station, the airport status icon constantly flashes, almost like a pulse.
Today I took my PowerBook to a hot spot, and Airport worked great, so I know that my card is fine.
One thing I'm wondering about -- what firmware are you using on your base station? I currently have 4.0.4, so it's possible that upgrading to 4.0.9 will solve this problem. I'm reluctant for the moment to try the firmware upgrade because the clamshell iBook connects to the snow base station so smoothly. I don't want to mess up one set-up while trying to fix another.
I'll check back in case you have new information, including (I hope) a fix for this.

Unable to select modem in the "Show" field in System Prefs, Network

I think I may have asked this in the wrong place before. I really would appreciate any help or advice anyone can give!!
I've just moved and I'm trying to get the modem there to work with my iBook G4. The modem definitely works and it's all definitely set up (my boyfriend's sorted his out on his PC), just not with my computer.
In the user guide (from the provider - Tiscali) I'm told to go to System Prefs (fine), Network (fine), select Location as "ADSL USB PPPoE/PPPoA" (fine) but then I encounter a problem - I am told to set the "Show" field just below to the modem name (which comes up in my Network status as "Ethernet Adaptor (en2)", so my computer is recognising it). However, this isn't an option. Also, when I go to the screen where I can prioritise the internet connections (Network Status?? Sorry for not being more specific - I'm at work and on a PC) "Ethernet Adaptor (en2)" is there but grey, as in I can't select it.
Any ideas what I can do? I've installed all of the CD and did my restarting, I have the modem plugged in and my computer is recognising this, and the people at Tiscali said I'd have to contact Apple for help but I decided to give here a try.

Please don't misunderstand, but many of the Internet service providers in the UK and much of Europe use USB Modems and they are fair to poor at best.
Another point of intrest is that all of these same Internet Service Providers also have and offer Ethernet Modems as well as Ethernet Modem Routers.
I think it must be a cost issue for them. Another point is the technology is exactly the same weather you have a PC or a MAC, the reason they all point the finger in another direction , they have few Mac Techs available, when PC's hold the majority of the market. Another point, you shouldn't need to download there software to make stuff work.

System Prefs not showing all disks

It's been some time since I backed up and I've just copied over to my Lacie 500 drive the contents of my main drive. On checking with Startup Drive in System Prefs I note that I don't see the Lacie nor my second HD which I use with FCP editing content. (I was going to treat my Lacie to being the startup Drive as a test). What I have sshowing is the normal HD startup drive and Network Startup showing. No second HD nor the Lacie. In About This Mac, no Lacie drive is showing.
What have I cocked up, if anything?

I thought this was answered. You copied over the contents of your internal either by dragging or using copy and paste. Startup Disc is looking for volumes that will boot the computer; that's why it's called "startup..." I'm beginning to think your drives were never bootable and therefore, never available in Startup Disc.
You can continue using these drives as data drives by dragging things over, but if you want a bootable drive -- and this can be very useful if your internal ever fails, and be up and running right away, or if the internal, startup Volume starts to show serious problems, in which case you can always do a reverse clone from a healthy external back to the internal -- you need to make a clone.
There are two distinct ways you have of creating a bootable, i.e. startup copy of your Internal. You can use Restore from Disc Utility, or, generally much more practical, you can use a cloning application.
There are several; the one I use, which is excellent and is freeware, is Carbon Copy Cloner. Once you do the initial clone, CCC offers the option of doing incremental backups. This will keep the clone looking exactly like the internal (or, since it's a MacPro, secondary drive.)
There is lots of documentation about using CCC and help for getting started at the site.

You need to start from a clean, properly Formatted (this is done from the Partitioning area of DU) drive. See this about Formatting. (You have to find out if your MacPro is PPC or Intel. PPC will be Formatted APM (Apple Partition Map) and Intel will be Formatted GUID. For that, look in the Apple Menu> About this Mac>More info> Processor.) Note that Formatting will erase all the data currently on the drive.

I have a white Macbook aprox 18 months old. Yesterday I opened system prefs and there was no longer a Security button. I just changed ISP and went in to the firewall the other day, but now it isn't there. Any help would be much appreciated.

4 gig memory installed only 3.5 gig available on Win8 64 bit

model: hp compaq presatio sr5520NL
Mobo: Leonite 2
OS: win64 bit
bios: phoenix technologies, LTD 5.21
I upgraded my memory from 3 gig memory to 4 gigs,
Now windows tells me, that 4 gig is installed but only 3,5 gig is available.
I want to be able to use the 514 that i am missing in windows.
What did i do to figure this out:
I checked if my motherboard supports 4 gig and it does.
I checked if my bios recognizes the 4 gig installed and it does.
I did uncheck the memory cap box in msconfig advanced boot settings.
Window source control tells me that 514 MB is reserved for hardware
I reseated the memory blocks but it didnt take effect
Now i found that it maybe has to with the memory remapping / memory hole function in bios.
but in my bios there is no such function.
I tried to update the bios version to 5.23 (sp37378.exe) but in the process it tells me that my system is not supporting the update...
I am wondering if there is a way that i can use the complete 4 gig set of installed memory? or can i at least update my bios to version 5.23 in a work-around?
or can i somewhere enable this function memory remapping outside of bios??

Hi Remko_2013. The extra memory usage is most likely being used by shared graphics memory (can be altered in the BIOS). The short answer is no, you will not be able to regain all of that memory back.

BIOS shows 4GB for HP 15-E041CA E5D76UA

Hi,
I ordered a HP 15-E041CA E5D76UA from NewEgg, however, once I turned it on the BIOS shows "Total Memory" as 4GB instead of the 8GB in specification. The NewEgg staff said because VGA use 4GB of the memory, is it correct since in VGA mode the VGA should not take 4GB. Is it broken?

You ask a very good question.
The PC's specs definitely state that it comes with 8 GB of memory.
Normally, the BIOS would report 8 GB of memory but your system uses shared system memory with the graphics.
If you look at the specs, it says up to 4 GB of memory goes to the graphics.

So, I would have to say the NewEgg customer services rep is correct.
With 8 GB of system memory, 4 GB is going to the graphics since you have 8 GB of memory.
If you had 4 GB of memory, I would speculate 2 GB would have gone to the graphics.

Sure it is, yet it's called HP LaserJet Professional M1210nf MFP Series *
Today, I followed your other advice, and deleted the printer, deleted the /Library/Printer/hp folder, downloaded the entire set of driver, re-installed the printer twice, once with the driver, once with Bonjour.
The Bonjour Printer has the scan option active, but it is doesn't work (refer to above.), it is called M1217nfw
The Apple Driver Printer doesn't show the scan option at all, it is called M1217nf (as on the http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#HP list.) This model number doesn't exist, as far as I can tell.
Still, everything works perfectly in Snow Leopard, for a MF printer that has been manufactured years after Snow Leopard was released.
Why going up in software version means going backwards in compatiblity for brand new product is really the question that puzzles me here.
