X61s Cannot burn/format DVD

I have tried with multiple blanks DVD-R and I cannot burn any DVD. It runs and then just says general failure. Any way I can troubleshoot this. I do not have another drive to test.
It says DVD MultiRecorder CD-RW
Is this in fact a DVD Burner.
Thanks for any help and/or suggestions.

It is not a DVD burner. It is a CD-RW and could read DVD disc. So you could burn DVD-ROM by this device.

  • Cannot burn NTSC DVD after burning PAL DVD

Using Adobe Premiere Elements vers.10, I created a video which I need to burn onto DVDs, in PAL format for European users and NTSC for North American recipients.  I successfully burned (to folder) in NTSC, and then in PAL.  Produced two sample DVDs from those two folders and reviewed them.  This highlighted the need for a few corrections to the project.  I carried these out, burned the revised film to folder in PAL format, and then wanted to do the same in NTSC format.  The computer appears to work on the task, but produces no folder and no files.  I am no longer able to procude a DVD in NTSC format, either by burning to a folder or burning directly on a DVD.  What is the cause of this problem ?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide with this issue.
    Paul

    Paul,
I do not recall any issues, where the program gets hung up, though as a precaution, maybe clear the Media Cache in the Scratch Disks. I know that Encore (sort of the authoring "big-brother" to the authoring function in PrE) can get confused, when it has some older Media Cache files. It assumes that things have already been done, when it needs to "start over."
Also, I would create a new, empty folder, with a unique name, and direct the Burn to Disc to THAT folder. Since all that one gets is the VIDEO_TS, AUDIO_TS (empty), and then another folder, whose name I cannot recall (Encore does not write anything but the VIDEO_TS folder and IFO, BUP and VOB files), it's easy to confuse the output. Just thinking here.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Cannot burn a DVD without errors!! Plays fine in IMovie and Quicktime.

Have been using IMovie for almost a year and really regretting getting an IMac, as I am having so many issues with it. Initially, I thought the issue was with IMovie (although when I finish a movie it plays just fine on the computer). Then I thought the issue was with the Quick Time export (although when I finish the export and play from the Quick Time file, it perfect).
Then, I burn the DVD, using IDVD. I think this is the issue! Specifically, when I play the new DVD, the following occurs:
    1. Some (not all) music tracks are distorted or sound like there are two tracks playing over each other;
    2. Some (not all) music tracks don't play;
    3. The sound levels of the music is erratic and increases in volume significantly;
    4. The DVD (normally towards the end) starts pausing and usually takes me back to the beginning.
I have now made a number of DVDs, some longer than others, some shorter, but all seem to have these issues.
As stated above. The movie plays fine in the IMovie file on full screen view AND in the Quick Time viewer file. It is when the DVD is burnt that all these errors occur.
I have tried changing the settings in IDVD. Even tried the professional quality.
Can some one please help in a relatively non technical way? I am really ready to throw away the IMac and go back to Showtime on windows, which was far easier to use. Please help?

Not sure how to check how much memory?
Click on the icon for your hard drive. Then go to File>Get info; this will bring up a window that will show you what the capacity is for your hard drive as well as the amount of available space. It is this available amount that you need to check.
The source of the music is ITunes. I think they are MP3, not sure, but they are MP3 compatible.
It is possible that this could be the origin to your difficulty; it has been in the past. Convert the format of your music to AIFF. Here are the directions from iTunes Help:
    +_Saving a copy of a song in a new file format_+
+You can convert a song to a different file format (and keep a copy of the original). For example, you can save a copy of a compressed song file such as MP3 or AAC in an uncompressed song format (AIFF or WAV).+
+When converting from a compressed to uncompressed file format (for example, from MP3 to AIFF), you shouldn't notice any reduction in sound quality. However, when converting between compressed formats (for example, MP3 and AAC), you may notice a reduction in the sound quality. For the best results, if you want your music encoded in a different file format, import the music again from the original source using the new encoding format.+
+IMPORTANT: Except for iTunes Plus songs, you can’t convert iTunes Store purchases.+
    +To convert a song's file format:+
+Choose iTunes > Preferences, click Advanced, and then click Importing.+
+In the Import Using pop-up menu, choose the format you want to convert songs to, and then click OK to save the settings.+
+Select one or more songs in your library, Option-click, and choose “Convert Selection to.”+
+The song in its original format and the newly converted song appear in your library.+
If your music was purchased from iTunes and is not iTunes plus, post back for directions on how to change the format.
What brand of DVD are you using and what speed are you using for the burn?
The very knowledgeable users on this forum recommend Maxell or Verbatim. Also, be sure to burn at 4x or lower. This tends to reduce the likelihood of errors during the burn process. As an added step, close your other applications during the burn process.

  • Cannot burn to DVD in iTunes 6 - unknown error occurred [261]

I'm having issues burning a playlist to DVD in iTunes 6 - it rejects the DVD and gives me an error message "The attmept to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred [261]." If I try to burn the same playlist to a CD, there is not a problem. In my "burning" preferences within iTunes, I have selected "Data CD or DVD", but when I pull the preferences up again, it only says "Data CD". I click this option again and it gives me "Data CD or DVD", but never seems to keep the "DVD" part of the option.
I have been able to burn to DVD from playlists in the past, but I believe it was before I upgraded to iTunes 6.
    Any suggestions?
HP Pavilion 6650y   Windows XP Pro

Correction: I cannot burn CDs or DVDs of playlists in iTunes 6.0.1. I have no problem burning CDs in other applications and could burn CDs prior to updating to iTunes 6.

  • Cannot burn a DVD for backup

I have completed a Erase & Install on the beast here. Now I tried to do a "clean backup" and am unable to burn a DVD. The following is the message:
The operation could not be completed because one or more of the required items cannot be found (Error code -43).
Could not open the data forl of "<unable to get file path>" (-43)
There it is. None of my research has helped. Would appreciate any expertise on the matter. Thanks.

As far as the backup, I was dragging my User folder
to the DVD, then selecting "Burn". It ran with it for
a while, then the error messages as listed before.
That's causing the error. There are files in your user folder (disk burning logs, preferences, caches, mail, et.) that are changing. Dragging files to a burn folder creates aliases to the files. When burning or verifying, if the original file (target of the alias) has moved, changed, or been deleted, you can get the errors you are seeing. Try burning all the folders except "Library" and see if you get the error.

  • Cannot burn to DVD with iPhoto 5.0.4

Looks like I'm not the only one with this problem. I simply cannot burn my photos to DVD or CD. I was planning to make a backup copy of my summer photos and run into this problem. iPhoto starts the burning process and returns error with the DVD drive.
How much does iPhoto require free disk space on the boot volume? I currently have about 1.37 GB free. When I tried to burn I had over 2 GB free disk space.
Has anyone reported this problem to Apple yet?
By the way when I exported a couple photo albums from iPhoto it (iPhoto) flipped a couple of photos upside down. No, I didn't even touch the rotate button, the program did this on it own, none of those photos were even selected at the moment. I instally hit the revert to original button. I'm starting to get worried without current backup now. Strange things are happening...

1.37G is way too little! The system needs at least the size of the DVD as free space to burn. It's highly recommended that you have a minimum of 15% or 10G, whichever is greater, as free space to assure efficient and trouble free operation. If you get down really low and the system tries to write needed files to the HD you can trash you HD with little hope of recovery. I would do whatever it takes to get your free space up to around the recommended limit.
One way to get a little of it back is the following:
1 - run either Cache Out, OnyX or Mac Sweeper to clean out the various cache and archived log files.
2 - run Monolingual to remove the unneeded language modules. I saved 900+MB the first time I did it.
Do you have a camera that has an autorotate option? if so and it's turned on that may be the reason for the rotation issue. The 5.0.4 update corrects this but only for subsequent imports.
Hope this has been of some help. Good luck.

  • Cannot Burn a DVD

    Hello again.
Hit a bit of a brick wall. I've managed to get the DVD menu just the way I want it but now I'm having real problems actually burning the dvd. I've never had such problems before whilst burning my DV footage onto disc. I'm using the exact same disc's (philips) I always use as well.
The only substantial difference this time around is the length of my sequence, which is 1h 30m long and has chapters. It took about three hours whilst going through the burn process and then the message "problem formatting" (or something like that) pops up. I've tried it twice now and it's frustrating to say the least. The DVD I'm attempting to burn on to is 4.7GB so is it just a matter of disc size?
One thing I changed is the "Encoding" in "Project Info" to "Professional Quality". Should the bar at the bottom be fully blue or loaded under the text "Encoding"? I've noticed mine isn't. Or is this something that is done once the burn DVD button is pressed?
Thanks for any help. I'll have this wedding video finished one day
    Kev

The origin was DV PAL, transfered via firewire to Final Cut Express. I edited my sequence together all nice and then rendered everything. After that I Exported the sequence as a Quicktime Movie (with chapter markers) to my desktop. I then imported it into iDVD and the "play movie" and "scene selection" options popped up on my chosen theme.
I do in FC-Express or Pro
    • IMPORTANT --> FIRST in FinalCut - *Mix Down Audio under Sequence Menu* / Render Only / Mixdown
    • Export out as a QuickTime .mov file
    • Not selfcontained (not important but saves time and spaces)
    • NO QUICKTIME CONVERSION (Important)
    I use
    • Verbatim DVD-R disks
    • Burn at a reduced speed x1 or x4 (recommended by many)
    • Secure a minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk for 4x3 SD video
and my guess is that I would secure 5 - 6 times more for 16x9 HD
(Still no version of iDVD can do HD)
    from post ??
May not be relevant, but I had the same problem with iDVD, where burned DVDs showed a green screen. It was cured by quitting Quicksilver and Quickeys as well as disabling sleep and screensaving
What do you mean when you say any turning back from idvd to video editor to adjust? I saved my iDVD project last night and loaded it up this morning and everything seems correct. Chapters are correct and all titled correctly.
    Exactly what I say.
    • make an iDVD project
    • find somthing that is not OK
    • Close iDVD
    • Open FCE - and fix problem - re-Export movie
    • Opn iDVD - AND iDVD will ask "Update or Cancel"
NEITHER of them works - This is an iDVD BUG !
One has to do a new iDVD project from scratch !

  • Cannot burn a DVD+RW as "appendable"

I'm trying to burn my documents folder to a DVD+RW but I want to be able to write new data to the same disc in future.
I've created a disc image of the documents folder using the Disk Utility but when I come to burn the image, the option "leave disc appendable" is greyed out so I cannot tick the box.
Where am I going wrong with this? Or can I not use a DVD+RW in this way?

The Finder does not support burning mulitsession (appendable) discs at all. Disk Utility only supports mulitsession CDs, not DVDs. In order to burn multisession DVDs, you will need a thrid-party application such as Roxio Toast ($79-99). I have Toast on my Mac, but haven't attempted to burn multisession DVDs yet. I will do so the next time I buy blank DVDs (it could take a while though).
Once an optical disc has been closed (i.e. is no longer appendable), it appears as read-only in Disk Utility. However, you should find an Erase button under the Erase tab. If you erase you disc, it will appear as a blank disc again, and you will be able to add files to it. However, all the data previously stored on the disc will have been erased, so you will need to burn both the new and the old stuff.

  • Error-29, Cannot burn a DVD or save a disc image from within FCPX using Mountain Lion

    Really stumped on this one.
Running Mountain Lion, freshly downloaded version of FCPX, on a 2009 MacPro with 16 G RAM.
Trying to share a 4 minute movie I edited.
    - No problem exporting as a quicktime move...worked fine
    - Big problem trying to either burn a DVD, save a disc image, or export to an Apple device.
The progress bar gets about 90% complete, and then it stops and a message window comes up that says:
There was an error burning your disc. The operation couldn't be completed. (DSPPublishing error-29)
    Thoughts?

    From Crash Analyzer:
DSPPublishing error -29 (Final Cut Pro X)
This error can occur when burning a disc if your menu has incompatible assets.
    Suggested Actions
If your menu has a background image, make sure the image is not too large. Try reducing the size of the image and saving it as a JPEG or PNG.

  • Cannot Burn to DVD from within PS elements v. 10

Internal "Sonic" burning applet within PS Elements 10 FAILS when burning a DVD, but I CAN successfully burn DVD's outside of the Photoshop Elements program.
    Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Steve

PSE10 works best in conjunction with Premier Elements 10. Many users buy the bundle which integrate by sharing the Organizer.
For DVD’s intended for playback on TV’s you are possibly better using your external authoring program. PSE10 will let you create data DVD’s, mainly for viewing files on other computers or for archiving.

  • Cannot burn data dvd with super drive

    Hello together,
i try to burn a dvd in my Mac mini with superdrive using the disk-utility.
It is possible to delete a DVD +RW (fast or normal)
It is not possible to set a new name for the disk
It is not possible to burn the disk ("not enough space")
    I'm logged in as admin.
What do i have to do else to burn a dvd?

Quite cool + thanks a bunch!
I still don't know (but for the moment: i don't care anyway ;-)) why it's not possible with the Disk utility, the "Help" sytem makes a lot ado about. Anyway, for the moment i'm happy again :-D

  • Cannot burn CD/DVD using Finder but ok using Disk Utility

I have "Memorex" DVD-R and CD-R which Finder doesn't recognize. An error message "This disc cannot be used because it is not recognized". This only happens when I use Finder to burn a CD or DVD but if I use iTune or Disk Utility (creating disk image file then burn it) it works fine. What am I doing wrong?

    hi
are you using a western digital my book external drive?
the button manager software supplied with the drive causes problems with disk burning, and i had this exact same problem
you need to uninstall or upgrade to the latest version of the WD software.
    hope this helps

  • I cannot burn a DVD on a video I took on my iPhone 5

    Hi,
I am not sure if this is where I should post this question.  I took a video on my iPhone 5 and want to burn it on a DVD but when I tried to burn it using Windows DVD Maker, it did not support .mov format.  Is there any other way I can burn it onto a DVD?  I thought I might be able to use Windows Media Player but that didn't work.
    Thanks so much!

ThjeVMan can definitely download it to a Mac if he has one.  Since he didn't mention a Mac I assumed he didn't have one.
Launch Image Capture and connect the iPhone to the Mac to upload the video to the Desktop.  From there it's into iDVD or another DVD authoring application.
    ThjeVMan:
If you have a Mac what system are you running and what model Mac do you have.  Also what system came preinstalled on the Mac.
