X686 or x64 for HD Media Playback on an AMD/ATI based system?

Hello, I'm about to leave Xubuntu for Arch and, normally, I would automatically default to 32bit simply as I've had bad luck with media decoding in the 64bit realm. However, I've read lots about how refined the x64 variant of Arch is so I'm wanting to find out if I would be safe if I took the dive and gave x64 another shot.
I've searched around here and browsed the x64 section and read a few other 64 vs. 32 bit threads, but my question is fairly specific and I haven't seen the answer anywhere yet.
Primarily I'm concerned about ATI's driver being the same on 32bit and 64bit as I've been waiting for 9.3 in hope that it will fixe some problems I currently have with it (no hardware decoding for HD content, and a problem with underscanning on my HDTV). I've also had problems with there simply not being some 64bit codecs for some media, or that if they exist they are generally behind their 32bit equivalents.
So that sums up my main concerns, also though, I've been reading through the install guide and wiki entries and haven't seen mention of x64 or x686 specific instructions. Is everything the same for both, or did I just miss something?
Cheers

Ranguvar wrote:I suggest this thread be moved to Threads Going Nowhere. Sorry, but this topic has been discussed over nine thousand times Search the forums, you'll see. I've _never_ had problems because of 64-bit Arch (except me being very stupid once and installing 32-bit packages straight from the i686 repos.....), but search for more testimonies both ways.
Shoot, nine thousand times? I guess I should of searched a bit harder!
But yeah, move it wherever's fitting, but I needed answers to my specific questions and got some good information I had not yet found (especially about the upcoming FFmpeg bluray support!).
Anyway, I'm up and running with Arch and wanted to do a post install run-down. I did a rough install by the seat of my pants and manage to get it booting just fine. I installed links along with the base packages. Once I got it up and running I tried to jump straight to xfce4 (kinda thinking I was probably missing something) and then when it failed to start because X was not installed I took a step back and loaded the beginners guide in links. I read it front to back and then formatted and reinstalled.
My first attempt would have been solid had I not messed up and installed grub to my /boot. I was unclear from the beginners guide as it was following a partition scheme that didn't have a separate /boot partition. I rebooted and I was presented with a grub terminal and unable to rectify it with commands after reading a bit on the forum and wiki. I blitz through a second install and got everything right, after rebooting grub loaded up and I booted sucessfully into my shiny new Arch install.
From there I went through getting everything setup as per the guide, only ran into a problem when I was doing the baseline test with xterm. I was completely unable to get it to load dvorak during the test. I tried and tried but failed. Eventually I just gave up and moved on to installing xfce. Once that was installed I loaded it up and changed the settings in xfce and dvorak is now working.
I'm not sure why one way failed and this other way worked. Whether or not xfce is superseeding the config from hal much in the same way that x superseeds the terminal settings.
Anyway, just wanted to get this down somewhere.
Thanks again for your guy's feedback.
Edit: Oh, and my clock is two hours off, but that's for another day.

  • Is There a Public "Bug and Issue Management System" for Strobe Media Playback?

    HI all,
Is there a public "Bug and Issue Management System" for Strobe Media Playback?  Or is this forum the only officially supported public mechanism for SMP bug reporting and feature requests?
(fyi, I ask in part because SMP is built on top of OSMF, and both projects are led by development teams at Adobe.  The OSMF project, however, has fuller level of support including "Bug and Issue Management System" here:

Thank you to all of the SMP team for this great player!

  • Source Media Playback

Where can I get source for Strobe Media Playback for http dynamic bitrate streaming. Current 2.0 does not seem to do so.

    Thanks Siliviu,
Another query regarding the Strobe Media Player -
We managed to run the Samples code for Dynamic Streaming -
    1. We saw that the video stored on a web server was getting played after 2 minutes. Of course this video was about 160MB in size. Smaller video of 1-2 MB was faster. BUt a video of size 160 MB has to start playing since using dynamic streaming the player may not wait until the video is copied.Your views on this please.
    2. Also we need o be able to control the playback w.r.t to the chunks being downloaded. We know the offsets in the mp4 to read to read ony chunka and not the full video. How can we play only a chunk using Strobe Media Player. Where should we make the changes.
    Thanks

Any tutorial for Live RTMP Dynamic Streaming using Strobe Media Playback anywhere available on the web ?

Thank you for the link but it does not solve my problem. In this thread they work with manifest xml files like a playlist. Which i tryed but also doesn´t work. Adobe declairs FMP with easy config and less code for non geeks. And this is exactly what i want for my project.
Does anybody can post some  html sample code especially for dynamic streaming/ MBR wit Flash Media Playback??? For Live or On-Demand.

  • Plug-ins w/ Flash Media Playback -- Request for Examples

    The FMP FAQ states:
Flash Media Playback ... does support dynamically loaded plug-ins from  third-party service providers.
Unfortunately, the FMP Setup  page does not include any fields for setting plug-in related values.
Can anyone provide links to any examples of FMP loading  plug-ins?
For instance the SMILPlugin or the YouTubePlugin?
If the YouTubePlugin can be used with FMP, a link to an example may be  helpful in responding on this forums post:

    Thanks,

    Hi Greg,
FMP supports plugins, but for security reasons, they have to be loaded from whitelisted domains. I could add some examples for FMP, but the users will be pretty much restricted to those plugins - since they will not be allowed to use their plugins hosted on untrusted domains. In this way, cross site scripting and tracking risks are much reduced.
If a video site owner wants to benefit from this advantage without hosting his own SMP, please let him contact us.
You can find a short description of the feature here:

Thanks Janaki but how can I add a new application? I tried to do it using Flash Media Administration Console but it doesn't work
    Hi Salma,
To add an application to FMS follow the below steps
    1. Create a folder "my_app" under "$InstallRoot\applications" directory.
    2. For simple server side code... add "main.asc" file inside "$InstallRoot\applications\my_app" directory which has the content like
    application.onConnect = function(clientObj){
         trace('onConnect function");
         return true;
    3. To add streams to the application, creates 'streams' folder inside "$InstallRoot\applications\my_app" directory, within that create '_definst_' folder and then place your FMS supported streams within the directory. So your streams for the 'my_app' application will be at "$InstallRoot\applications\my_app\streams\_definst_\mystream.flv".
You can connect to this application using the url "rtmp://your_server_name/my_app". To play the stream mystream.flv using video player, use the url "rtmp://your_server_name/my_app/mystream.flv".

    Janaki L

  • 3rd party software for syncing media to blackberry phones

Not spam. I wanna say that right out front. I'm not trying to sell anything but I do have an app that can add a lot of value to windows users who need to sync Android G1's, Blackberry's, a PSP, iPhones, iPods and dang near any device. This is something I've worked on for sure, but also something I peronsally use with my Blackberry, my iPhone, my iPods and my PSPs.
doubleTwist is a free application just  launched last week (actually a year ago but for the last 6 months have been re-tooling its 2.0 release) who's main mission is being a one-stop hub for managing media on any and all devices..
doubleTwist  is a stand alone app which recognizes your device and takes media from iTunes and WMP as well as video and pics from anywhere on your pc or Mac and takes care of any transcoding or reformatting that might be necessary to enable playback on your phone or mobile device. no muss, no fuss.
Plug it in, choose the media you want to sync and hit go. It's that easy.
You can also send media to your framily and friends from your computer media library or the device itself that your friends can sample without even signing up by going to the web interface.  This is of course fun but also userful. If you have mulitple computers and want to store your media in more than one place you can simply send it to yourself on another pc or mac that you have an account on and boom, no FTP or tons of copying to CDs. Just select any part of or all of your liberary and hit send and it's done.
You can even drag and drop YouTube videos straight to your PC or Mac with dT and add them to your media liberay. Not just links but the actual video files. sweet.
Check it out. It's free of course.  Here're a video that shows the process..       doubleTwist.com
There's a full review at crackberry.com with screen shots, et al...

  • Can't seem to stream (RTMP) an FLV file in Flash Media Playback from the Amazon Cloud

I seem to be having trouble streaming any FLV file using RTMP from the Amazon Cloud.  Other file formats (i.e., MP4, F4V) seem to work just fine.
I tried using your Flash Media Playback demo page and still had the same problem:
    http://www.osmf.org/configurator/fmp/
Without publicly displaying the actual connection path here, this is what I am using for the Video Source (URL):
    rtmp://xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.cloudfront.net/cfx/st/_definst_/MyVideo.flv
If I change the "MyVideo.flv" to "mp4:MyVideo.f4v", for example, then it works.  But when I try to reference any FLV file that I have located on the Amazon Cloud then it just shows continuous buffering.
The FLV files that I am trying to use with both the Strobe and Flash Media Playback(s) all stream just fine when I connect to them via other Flash based applications/players that I have.
    Do you have any suggestions?
