X79-gd65 (d8) overclock with 32gb ram?

Greetings,
I searched here for an answer, but didn't see one.  I did notice one user doing a test with eight dual-channel sticks of RAM, though.
I bought this motherboard for a 3960X, and populated it with two quad-channel G-Skill RipJaws 2133 MHz kits (4x4gb).  I had read on other forums that I needed to enable the XMP for this memory to work at 2133 MHz, but the computer doesn't seem to want to do this with Profile 1 selected.  I haven't even tried Profile 2, thinking this probably has something to do with using 8 sticks of RAM vs. 4.  I also have not changed any voltages - I thought the XMP would take care of all of that.
Does anyone know if I can use the memory at 2133 using this setup?  I also want to overclock the processor, but figured I'd start with the memory and move on after that was working.
Thanks,
DrDet

Excerpt from G.Skill;
2. The default DIMM frequency depends on its SPD, which is the standard way of accessing information from a memory module. Under the default state, some memory modules for overclocking may operate at a lower frequency than the vendor-marked value.
3. G.SKILL guarantees module compatibility within this specific Quad Channel kit. Combining with other memory kit or module(even with same part number) is not recommended to avoid any compatibility issue.
Mixing two kits can be problematic right at the start. The other, the platform's CPU IMC natively supports 1600 at 1.50v's + or - 0.075v's. Since the exact part number is not listed, going by the G.Skill information for 2133 rated RAM, the very lowest DRAM V. required was 1.6v's, with most kits requiring 1.65v's. Also, your OS is not stated. Some of these kits also have a disclaimer they will only work up to 16GB with W7 Home Edition.
I wish you luck with the RAM you have, but I would recommend as possible better choices Corsair's 32GB matched kits. Currently 4 kits available, two of them 1600 rated, two of them 1866 rated, all four kits are 1.50v's. I have run the 1866 rated 32GB kit successfully on only 1.50's. At the moment, due to the restriction of a CPU cooler, I am restricted to low profile RAM only. Using the Corsair Low Profile, Low Voltage 1600 rated Vengeance (white) 1.35v, 4X2X4GB kits from the same production batch, although this is also a risky practice, as Corsair recommends against mixing kits as well.
As a side note. The CPU V. industry recommendation for everyday use is up to 1.35v's. Intel listed absolute max is 1.400v's which is considerably lower than it's Sandy Bridge cousins that have an industry recommended everyday max of up to 1.400v's. Mine runs at 4747 on Auto V. which sets 1.352v's at load, all power saving features are enabled allowing idle & low use at 12X & hovers around 0.780-0.816v range.

  • New system with 32gb Ram.....CS5.5 using alot of scratch disk

    Hi All,
Been away from these forums for a while.
OK. I have just built my new rig (Asus p9x79 pro, 32GB 1600Mhz DDR3, Intel 3820, old GTX285 1GB, Win7 pro.....many hard drives ) as I am working on a very big project producing 440x240cm200ppi digital drawings to be installed as lightbox artworks at the same size.
My old system just could not cope with the demands I was putting on it as It only had 12gb RAM. I have two scratch disks set up x1 30gb SSD (dedicated) and x1 240gb SSD ( has other stuff on it with 75gb free ). I am also using Photoshop CS5 Extended (updated) with RAM usage set to 80% (23976).
While I realise PS will still make use of the scratch disk despite the amount of RAM I was shocked to see the first drive (30gb) was almost full with 5gb space left when I loaded the PSB file with x9 layers. Looking at the meta data in Bridge it tells me the file size is 6.90GB with pixel dimensions of 34646x18898@200ppi. Windows reports that I am only using 20GB of my 32GB......
Shouldn't PS be using more RAM before going to the slower reads on a  SSD? Windows Task Manager tells me I have 8150 RAM cached, 12310 RAM Available and 4215 RAM Free.  If Photoshop is not using the 12GB would it be wise to make a 9GB RAMDISK for an addition boost...not even sure if that would work, but, I hate the feeling of having all that RAM and 1/3 not being used.

You referred to the answer to your puzzlement yourself when you typed "I realise PS will still make use of the scratch disk despite the amount of RAM" [emphasis added].
Photoshop creates the scratch disk the instant you open an image file or create a new one.  It sets its initial size based on its size, number of layers, history states, etc., regardless of installed RAM.  It starts using the scratch disks from the get go, moving stuff off of the scratch disk into RAM and viceversa as Photoshop sees fit.
When setting up a scratch disk, figure on at least 100 times (or more) the size of your largest file, multiplied by the number of files you keep open at any given time.
The total amount of scratch disk space on your two drives (30 GB + 75 GB) is not that large, as per the above calculation.
Just for reference, my dedicated primary scratch disk is a 300 GB physically separate internal hard drive, and I also have other drives set up as secondary, etc., hard drives.  Other users have a lot more scratch disk space than I do.  I normally have no more than two files open in Photoshop at once, occasionally three or four.
Also keep in mind that the percentage of memory you allocate to Photoshop is not a percentage of total installed RAM but of available memory at any given time after the OS and other applications you have running have grabbed the RAM they need.  Therefore the calculation you made is not necessarily accurate.
As to creating a RAM disk, I supposed there's no harm in trying, but the real question is whether you are seeing any real performance problems now, rather than just calculating RAM figures that may or may not be that relevant in actual use.
Conceivably, you could also get a much larger SSD as your primary scratch disk.

  • MSI x79-GD65 (8d) RAM issue.

I've just recently bought a new pc. Put it together this week aswell, everything works fine except for the fact that my RAM is not capable of running quad channel. The problem is (as far as I've been able to diagnose it) that the slots to the right of the cpu, that's dimm slots 5-8, aren't working.
After installing all the parts and installing the memory in slots 1, 3, 5 and 7 (the black ones), I noticed that Windows only saw 8GB of ram rather than the full 16GB. I went into my BIOS (not clickbios but startup bios as that allows you to view Memory-Z) and found that it only detected the Ram in slots 1 and 3. I turned off the pc and put the ram in slots 5 and 7 into slots 1 and 3 to check if the ram was faulty. They were detected fine.
I put all of them in again but still no more than 8GB got detected. I swapped all the memory into the blue slots (2, 4, 6, 8). After doing so the computer wouldn't post. I then tried to boot with different ram (2 sticks of 2GB DDR3 1333mhz Mushkin) in slot 1 and 5 (that is 1 one the left and one to the right of the cpu). Only the ram in slot 1 got detected.
I then put the Mushkin in the first two black dimms (1,3) and put all the corsair ram into the blue slots (2, 4, 6, 8). No more than 12GB got detected (which was slots 1-4, 2x2gb and 2x4gb). Memory-Z confirmed that none of the ram in slots 5-8 got detected.
As a desperate last measure I took out the Mushkin ram and put the Corsair ram into slots 1-4. All of the ram got detected but for obvious reasons it was only running dual channel.
I've read on this and other forums that sometimes the cpu socket pins can be bent and that can cause memory problems, I took apart the pc again and looked at the pins, but none of them were missing nor were any bent.
The question now is how can I get quad channel ram working?
    system specs
    Motherboard: MSI x79-GD65 (8D)
    Bios: Version 1.7 (latest version)
    VGA: Gigabyte 670GTX OC
PSU: Corsair Enthusiast TX750M (750 Watt)
CPU: Intel Core i7-3820 (stock speed)
MEM: Corsair Vengeance CMZ16GX3M4X1600C9 (4 sticks of 4gb)
HDD: Corsair Force 3 240GB SSD.
    + 2xSamsung F3 1TB in raid 0, all on the Intel chip.
    COOLER: Corsair H100
    OS: Windows 7 64bit Ultimate

For quad channle you must populate DIMM1, DIMM3, DIMM5, DIMM7 or all slots if using 8 sticks. Populating slots 1-4 has to result in dual channel.
If 1, 3, 5 and 7 won't work there's some different problem that still would indicate bent pin(s).

  • Z77A-GD65 no longer boots with 4 RAM modules

I had 4 x 8GB Cosair Vengeance LP that used to work fine, but no longer boots into Windows with 4 but only with 2 RAM modules.  Any help in solving the issue would be appreciated. ( I need 32 GB as I run many virtual machines )
The 4 modules worked fine for few months until couple weeks ago,  when I saw issues with booting into Windows 7. The workaround was to "warm up" by leaving the PC in BIOS for about 5 minutes and it would boot fine.  Since couple days ago, it would POST but not boot into Windows or into live Linux on USB, so I started troubleshooting with bare bones first ( MB, CPU, 1 RAM, PS ) and then starting adding more and more components until I found that  1 and 2 RAM modules worked in either black or blue rail but with 4 RAM modules, it will POST, but not boot at all into either USB based live system or into Windows 7.
Memtest with 2 separate sets of modules pass with flying colors. Mixing the sets work fine too, but add 2nd set (i.e. 4 modules) and it fails to boot.  I am leaning more toward believing the issue is with the MB than with the RAM since mixing them doesn't throw any memory error.
Any suggestion on how to check if it's the RAM or MB ?

What voltage is the RAM running? A slight bump up in voltage might help.
As to voltage, I started with standard 1.5 and then incrementally upped it to 1.65v. At 1.6v and above, it does boot into Windows, but intermittently goes into BSOD... Works perfect with 1.5v with 2 RAM modules.
I'll save the money for next build instead of going for 32GB kit.  ... guess I'll live with 16GB for now.
Thank you all for the advice.

  • Overclocking with a cheap ram module.

Hi mi question is as follows, i'm a happy owner of a k7n2 delta2 lsr, and a not so hapy owner of a sempron 2400+,
this is a new world for me cus the last mobo i had was the k7n2 delta with an athlon 2000+ oced to 2000Mhz with no problems.
This new system i have present one problem from the start, the multiplier of the sempron seems to be locked or something because i can't move it just remains in 10 and that's it.
Also for the memory i have found the solution buying a 512Mb DDR 400 Markvision value stick but by doing this i loose the dual channel feature. I have done this because in theory i should be able to overclock with a little more space without the dual channel stress (remember that i have a cheap memory) and in theory i should be able to get the 200Mhz fsb without any problems playing with core and mem voltages and timings and that's where i need your help guys!, i need a few ideas about timing configurations, also voltages to get the best overclocking possible based on the system i have.
Also if you have any other crazy ideas feel free to post them here so i can try them in my rig, let's say that my rig is open for testing
    new ideas.

Now the question has become an answer by itself, in some cases if you're lucky as i was you will get a memory module as cheap as markvision is and also with good quality, here are the result of my tests and what I have achieved:
    SYSTEM:
    Sempron 2400+ stock @ 1666Mhz (333Mhz fsb)
    Markvision Value 512 X 1 PC3200 (400Mhz fsb)
    MSI K7N2 DELTA2 LSR mobo
    PSU 400Watts Noga
    BIOS:
    high performance mode = Manual
    Dynamic Overclocking = Disabled
    CPU voltage = 1.65V
    MEM voltage = 2.60V
    AGP Voltage = 1.50V
    Adjust CPU FSB = 210Mhz
    Adjust CPU RATIO = Default
    CPU Interfase = Optimal
    Adjust DRAM Freq = 1:1
    Memory timings = Manual (8-3-3-2.5)
This settings drops 2100Mhz in windows and tested with AMDcpuid it drops 2133Mhz stable, tested with prime95 for 12 hours in priority 9
and tested with memtest86 for another 12 hours, no errors, the temperature is quite low which amaze me because i'm only using
the stock heatsink fan (idle 38 - load 43). It is very important for me to say that i was able to achieve this OC by downgrading the
bios version of my delta2 down to B3.0 the B4.0 was really unstable for some unknown reason.

    Hey Guys.
I have recently purchased new hardware.
    MSI X79-GD65(8D) Motherboard
    Intel i7 3820 CPU
    4 X Corsair Vengeance 4GB DDR3-1600 RAM
    MSI GTX660Ti Power edition GPU
    Corsair 750W Professional series PSU
    Corsair H80 CPU Cooler
I haven't overclocked ht e mobo, but on cold boot, the mobo doesn't initialize, gives a post error 63, refered to the mobo manual, it says it means late CPU initialize. Checked the BIOS, running version 1.7 and according to MSI download site for the CPU support list.
The memory is in quad channel as it shows in a diagram in the mobo manual. If I switch the pc off, and back on, it initializes and boots, the pc runs stable, it can run 48 hours no hassle, passes burn in tests to, just the first cold boot doesn't initialize.
Any ideas for what to look at would be great.
    Thank you.

A little hint for you: Don't try any of the .1B betas as they run horrible. I had to remove the latest .1B3 as it bricked the board and had to be recovered.

  • X79-GD65 (8D) and i7 3820 issues

    Hello members
    I recently purchased a MSI X79-GD65 (8D) motherboard and an Intel i7 3820 CPU.
I have installed 4 sticks of 16GB memory.
When I turn the computer on, everything looks normal on the motherboard, except I get no video (have tried two video cards).
The CPU phase LED shows 3 bars, no digits on the debug motherboard LCD.
I have noticed that it is impossible to turn the power off and the PSU needs to be switched off.
From what I am reading it seems I have an old BIOS, (the chip has a red dot) and this is incompatible with the 3820.
I was wondering if anybody knows a workaround to allow me to get into BIOS to reflash the chip.
The fact that the BIOS chips are surface soldered doesn't help either.
    Any ideas appreciated.

    it is dead to me.
there are some serious key flaws with MSI.
Why is the BIOS chip soldered surface mount, if BIOS are always outdated, why not install a socket BIOS chip, this would then be a very straight forward fix
Why do I need a CPU installed to flash my BIOS, ASUS has this feature on their motherboard, this could easily be fixed in this case
The RMA website for Australia is non functional, try navigating http://au.msi.com/service/wheretobuy/ you get a JavaScript error.
I reread the manual which points to the url http://www.msi.com/service/cpu-support (which doesn't even work because of the missing trailing forward slash) and it pointed to the url http://www.msi.com/product/mb/X79A-GD65--8D-.html#/?div=CPUSupport.
Nothing on that page even hints there may be incompatibility issues.
    Not a good experience

  • Is scratch drive necessary with 64 bit ps cs4?  with abundant ram

I intend to acquire ps cs4 andi have a 64 bit machine with 32gb of ram...problem is it would be difficult for me to set up a different scratch disc...how much ram would one need in order to see no benefit from a scratch disc ??

since i brought it up i just did the math...2 to 64th power is 1.84 times 10 to 19th power...i think that bears some relationship to how much ram the cpu can access but i'm not computer literate enuff to be sure anyway i'm a little off topic
as i understand it the reason that photoshop uses scratch drives is so the app doesn't have to compete with the operating system for what os calls "virtual memory"...i would think if one had enuff ram that the os wouldn't need virtual memory so ps would not be competing for hard drive access even if it did need to use it...i'm a little curious why ps doesn't address the fact that computers are continuously equipped with more and more ram....if adobe bothers to develop a 64 bit application that can address scads of ram why does ps continue to use hard drives for scratch files-when memory is faster ?

  • Will 32GB RAM have noticeable benefit compared to 16GB?

Will 32GB RAM have noticeable benefit compared to 16GB?  Reason I'm asking is that I've just built a new PC: 3770K, 32GB RAM, SSD for OS and programs, SSD for scratch, Caviar Black for storage, etc but unfortunately Windows 7 Home Premium only allows 16GB RAM!  I have Windows 8 Pro which I could install giving me access to full 32GB but only really want to do this if 32GB will offer tangible benefit to Photoshop.
Would love to hear from those that actually have upgraded from 16GB to 32GB.  Thx!

    Hi Noel,
I usually have quite a few windows open.  At the moment (which is probably fairly typical) I have Lightroom, Photoshop, 10 tabs in Firefox, Outlook and Mediamonkey (mp3 player).  One of the little things I like about Windows 8 in a dual monitor setup is that the task bar on both monitors display open apps and those pinned there.  With Windows 7 only the main monitor got them.  Also the new start window (which started life as 'metro') only displays on one monitor so the other monitor still shows apps/desktop.
Overall, I would say it is a better user experience, performance seems very good and start up time is improved.  Just another example of the difference betweem W7 and W8: I have a Logitec surround system that used to be a real pain everytime I did a fresh install of W7.  I'd have to install drivers manually and then mess around with settings for quitte a while before it would work.  It was a common complaint on the Logitech user forums.  When I installed W8, the system worked flawlessly - I installed no drivers or did anything.  I was amazed!
And yes, I have a GeForce (570) so can't comment on other CARDs.  When I first installed W7 with the card I had to manually install the right graphics driver.  With W8 it seemed to find them automaticaly and it booted straight up without a problem.  I did however then proceed to get the latest drivers from Nvidea and do a manual driver install just in case.
And unless there is some technical reason preventing it, I bet Aero will return to W8 in an update - many people have commented on that.

  • No Overclock with PT880 and SATA

OK----well it happened to me too!!!  No overclock with SATA RAID......
Board loaded WinXP like a dream----seems fast as heck----everthing as smooth as glass-----is VERY stable at stock speeds.
    Then I tried to overclock......
    201 FSB was all I could get-----RIDICULOUS!
Have fooled a little with voltages----no go
Will try Vlink settings tomorrow-----am tired and ticked off
Have been doing everything from Bios----will try the dynamic overclocking and core cell tomorrw as well.
Something is not right--------I emailed MSI and will call them as well on Monday.
Am also going to search the Abit forum and see if they have the same problem because if they do-----it's probably a chipset problem------if they don't------it's an MSI problem.
Maybe give VIA a call as well-----this board has so much potential for a $59 expense.
    If it would just overclock.....
Guess you get what you pay for......
    Wish me luck------John

OK----I hosed Windows for the second time last night playing with this board.
Beta Bios 1.42 DID NOT fix the Bios overclocking problem with SATA.
ANY overclock over 220 FSB (at least with my setup) is VERY dicey.  I crashed in windows and no matter what I try----it will not boot. -----Clear CMOS, F8, Last Known Good Config, etc. nothing-----it just restarts.
No big deal----I just rebuild the array and reload Windows------and do Windows update----but it costs me a couple of hours each time.  I won't load any real aps except benchmark applications on this machine till I'm satisfied Ive got stable settings.
    Things I've learned:
I really like "Core Cell"----it's actually a pretty good little overclocking app.  Be careful of the "Auto" setting----for me, it worked once----the 2d time I tried it was when I hosed Windows.  It is supposed to start overclocking your board moving the FSB up 1 Mghtz at a time till it finally is unstable and crashes.  Then it saves the last good setting which was stable.  Then it will use that setting at Startup when the computer boots.
Worked great the first time------I upped my voltages and tried again-----the computer got to 227 FSB and froze----it never recovered.
I haven't been able to check yet if "Dynamic Overclocking" works----or has any value----will try that once I get windows up and running again.
Am starting to get a pretty good "feel" for this board.
Am thinking a stable overclock of around 220 FSB which is dissappointing for a 2.4c----but you know what, a 3.0c or a 2.8c might be perfect for this board.  With the higher multiplier of a 3.0c (15)------a 220 FSB puts you to to 3.3 Mghtz, which is SUPER for a low cost setup----- and you can find 3.0c's for less than $200 now-----and the low price of this board makes a 3.0c very affordable.  I would think the same applies to a Prescott 2.8 or 3.0----but I have no experience with that CPU.
Bottom line-----get yourself this board----an OEM or used 3.0c, cheap RAM that will overclock to DDR 450 with fairly decent timings (most mid-line PC3200 will do that just fine) a $12 Firewire Card and a couple of cheaper Samsung or Hitachi SATA drives to run in RAID 0 as well as a used ATI 9700Pro or 9800Pro off of eBay----and you got yourself a cheap "Barn Burner"  A machine that will run with the big dogs----for about $200-300 less
Here are some additional thoughts so far....
    1. Pretty darn good board for the price!
    2.  I'm not sure VIA's new AGP/PCI lock works----or works as expected.
    3.  Default voltages seem to be low for this board-----raising almost every voltage adds to stability greatly.
    4.  Although I have not benched it-----my SATA RAID (64K Stripe) seems tremendously fast.  Small files copy so fast----that nothing even appears on the screen-----it happens so quickly----you think the computer hasn't performed the operation----but sure enough----the file has been copied.
    5.  Sound seems VERY good and has LOW CPU utilzation for an onboard solution.
Waiting to hear back from MSI and VIA----and will play with this board some more tonight.
    John

If I install 4 DIMMs the board shows "55" on the debug LEDs. If I take out any two DIMMs (slots 1,3 or slots 2,4) the system boots fine and is completely stable. I can also have either pair install to either set of slots. I also made sure the memory timing, voltage, etc. where set correctly in the BIOS.
    Any suggestions?

    That it works when slots 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 are used, points to a problem an updated UEFI/BIOS may or may not resolve. Recommend to contact MSI Technical with your findings and see what they recommend or have to say about it;

Well it appears to be a problem with the RAM. I just happen to be building another system with an asrock board and 16GB of G.Skill RAM. swapped RAM into my system and the G.Skill works perfectly in my z77a-gd65 board with all four slots populated. The Corsair RAM produces the exact same behavior when install in the asrock board. I'm just going to RMA the RAM.

  • Problems with PC3200 Ram on the K8T??

I'll soon be building a new Athlon64 (3200+) system around the MSI K8T Neo FIS2R board.  Just waiting for my hard drives.  I plan to install 2 Corsair CMX512-3200LLPT DDR400 DIMM modules.  I've read several postings here from folks who claim to have trouble getting this ram to run at full speed on the K8T.  I plan to set the CAS latency, TRCD, TRAS and TRP to manufacturers specifications and I don't plan to overclock the CPU or Ram.  Anyone have experience with this ram on the MSI K8T?  Can I expect to have issues?  Thanks.
    Andy

i am running the same memory at full speed and i am having ZERO problems with em. I have them in the two slots closest to the CPU, just so you know.
