X79 Motherboard for drives
First let me think the many knowledgable folks who answer questions here. I have been reading for weeks. I am buying for a new build which I will use for LR, Photoshop, and Premier Pro, (plus ProShow Producer.) I am an enthusiast who does projects for myself, family, and friends. I am looking to balance cost with performance. I usually keep a system for 4-5 years. (My current one is 8 years old - we had kids to send through college.)
I only keep my current project(s) on the desktop. After I am done I move data to my NAS which has an automated backup to an external drive which I switch to offsite on a weekly basis.
I have purchased 4 drives with the following intentions:
256 GB SSD - Plextor M3 SATA III (OS, Programs, Pagefile)
2 x 1 TB - WD Black SATA 6.0Gb/s for RAID 0 (Media, Projects)
128 GB SSD - Plextor M3 SATA III (Export, Previews, Media Cache)
I plan on using an i7-3930K. I am leaning towards the ASUS P9X79 Pro, but before I push the buy button I want to make sure I am selecting a mobo with the right controllers to support the dives. While I have built systems, I have never built one with SSD or RAID.
So my two questions - for a ~$2500 build,
1) Would you modify / augment the drives in any way?
2) Is the ASUS Pro a good fit? Or is there a better choice?
Thank you so much.
Debbie
I thought I was set on my drives, but I just got notified that my second SSD that I was planning on using for Exports has been canceled. (I ordered it as I snagged a great one day price - but apparently they overcommitted. So I am coming back to all of you for help. To summarize, aiming at a $2000 - $2500 build for LR, Photoshop, and Premier Pro, (plus ProShow Producer.)
Intel 3930k cpu
Asus P9X79 Pro mobo with
2 x SATA 6 Gbps from the PCH
4 x SATA 3 Gbps from the PCH
2 x SATA 6 Gbps via a Marvell 9128 controller,
I have on order
256 GB SSD - Plextor M3 SATA III (OS, Programs, Pagefile) (will put on one of the PCH SATA 6)
2 x 1 TB - WD Black SATA 6.0Gb/s for RAID 0 (Media, Projects) (use the Marvell controller)
Plextor Blu Ray Burner (SATA 3)
I am looking for suggestions on what I should order to hold the Exports, Previews, and Media Cache. Should I try to stay with an SSD, put a single drive on the last SATA 6, or a Raid 0 on a pair of the SATA 3 ports?
(I only keep my current projects on the desktop; completed projects are moved to my NAS. My backup strategy is sound as well.)
Thanks for your help.

RT: Remote desktop says "can't find a suitable device for drive C"
Hello,
there is a french post on exactly the same topic, but I can't apply the solution given there.
My problem is the following: I have a remote desktop prepared to work as RT target. It has been checked for compatibility, the hard drive has been formatted in FAT32 format, it has been found by my host and has been assigned a static ip address. I have installed the software I need ( LabView 9.0 RT) using MAX. Now, when I try to boot it with the option "boot using software installed into the hard drive", all I get is the message
"Can't find a suitable device for drive C"
I have reseted the BIOS, have tried formatting the hard drive in the other format, uninstalled and reinstalled the software, tried to start the target pc without the usb stick, but nothing seems to work.
Do you have any ideas about what is going wrong?
Thank you,
Samuel
Solved!
Go to Solution. So you've got a IDE (and not SATA) hard drive? That should be supported anyway.
That would only confirm my experience... it's hard to find hardware compatible with LV RT. Before buying you cannot know if it's compatible. Once you have it the evaluation tool might tell you it's supported but still it might not work. I tried several motherboards in the last years, most of them did not work.
Your best bet might be to use relatively old hardware. -
Replacement Motherboard for Dual 1ghz MDD G4
My original motherboard for my G4 is toast.
What replacement Motherboards are compatible with my dual 1ghz
mdd G4?
The white sticker on board reads: 630T3984/630-4256
Thanks
EricOuch, I was hoping it wouldn't be one of those.
I think it has to be the same. My info comes from an Apple document discussing CPU upgrades.
Wait ... quoted -
Before Replacing the Processor
Important:
Apple has determined a compatibility issue between the processor and certain
fabrication levels of the logic board on some Power Mac Server G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors)
and Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) products. Before ordering a replacement
processor for those models, follow these steps:
1. Open the computer and check the fabrication number that is printed on the logic
board. The fabrication number is easily visible at the edge of the board near PCI card
slot 5.
2. If the logic board fabrication number is 820-1308, 820-1440, or 820-1445, do
not
order the processor module. Instead, you must replace both the logic board and the
processor by ordering the combined module: Module Set, Logic and Processor (Apple
part number 661-3654).
Replacement Warning:
When ordering this combined module set, a returned logic
board must match one of the three fabrication numbers (820-1308, 820-1440, or 820-
1445). If the logic board does not match one of these fabrication numbers, it will be
rejected.
3. If the logic board fabrication number is any other number (
not
820-1308, 820-1440, or
820-1445), order only the multiprocessor module (Apple part number 661-2730).
So make of it what you will. If your email address is in your profile, I'll email the whole document - it's a bible for MDD owners - shows you how to remove and replace everything, with photos. It's only 3.3MB. -
Gigabyte recalls X79 motherboards due to overheating.
Gigabyte has recalled their new X79 motherboards because of overheating problems when overclocking. A new BIOS update was released to alleviate the overheating problem.

Interesting. I tried to build a new system based on their X79-UD5 motherboard, and for the life of me I couldn't get it to POST into its BIOS setup. No amount of keyboard pressing (or smashing) would get me past the opening screen. I tried even swapped the motherboard with a new one (along with the 3930k chip, if you believe that).
That was the first system I ventured away from my usual stand-by of Asus. I thought Gigabyte had a good name, but it left a fairly bad taste in my mouth.

Replacement motherboard for P6813W
I haven't been able to find an original replacement motherboard for my P6813W desktop.
I see a lot of aftermarket boards for sale. I want something that is compairable to my original since it worked well for me.
I need one that can support an AMD FX-4130 3.8Ghz proccesor and a MSI ATI Radion HD6450 video card.
Any suggestions for one that is $150 or less? The Win 7 OS your using is tattoo'ed with the original motherboard. It will only activate with the same board and version. Recently my m8100e CTO motherboard (Narra3) became unsteady. The HP s5120y has the Narra5. I tried swapping out the hard drive to the working system, but it did not activate, but did allow some latitude (3 days) to activate. As I was busy with another project, I have not continued with the Narra5.
I am a volunteer. I am not an HP employee.

I just received a new macbook pro. I am looking for a usb3 external storage 500 GB drive. Some manufacturers of drives aren't for sure their drive will work with the new system. Does anybody have any suggestions for drives that will workw
There seems to be a problem, just now, with the USB 3 ports on the new MBP's supporting eternal USB 3 drives. Some people have no luck at all - can't even recognize the drive - and some are reporting USB 2 speeds (those who drives are recognized). I'd call a dealer such as LaCie or OWC to see if they have USB 3 drives that actually work with MBP's with USB 3 ports. You may have to wait for a software/firmware update.

Updating of firmware for drive Optiarc DVD Rw AD-5680H

THKSFailure with one type of optical media and not another -- even from the same manufacturer -- is not unusual. DVDs and DVD-RWs use different dies that respond to different lasers in the optical drive. There are numerous other possibllities here.
It would not be unusual if the write laser for DVDs has burned out but the DVD-RW is still working becasue they use entirely separate lasers of a different intensity and frequency.
It may be the dyes used in a particular lot of Verbatim DVDs are not quite compatible with the DVD lasers in your drive (that is independent of DVD-RWs because they use different lasers.
Because of manufacturing variations your drive may burn other brands of DVD blanks flwlessly, but just won't work with Verbatim DVD blanks.
The DVD Read/Write lasers in your drive may simply be dirty.
Changing/updating the firmware in an optical can be done, but there is a definite risk of converting the optical drive into something useful only as a paper weight.
Try another brand of DVD blank or even a different model Verbatim. (I have seen cases where discs from a different manufacturing lot from the same vendor worked when another failed.)
If you are using DVD-R blanks try a DVD+R (there again different lasers are involved.
It is tricky to clean slot loading optical drives, but sometimes simply blowing them out with short bursts of canned air will work. Be sure the computer has been powered down for a good while and the optical drive is completely cooled. Then use only short bursts of air to prevent super cooled liquid air from getting into the drive. That can easily crack the lenses if you aren't careful.
If your Mac mini is less than a year old or you have Apple Care, get an appointment and take it to the Genius Desk of the nearest Apple store. If you aren't covered under warranty a bus powered external optical drive very probably costs less than the labor charge to diagnose the issue with your drive. -

Unrecognized partition table for drive 80 error??
Currently running leopard on a macbook pro.
Formatted w bootcamp and running Windows Vista Ultimate.
Installation went fine reformated drive to ntfs 45gigs.
But when booting into windows I get this error message
"unrecognized partition table for drive 80"
Then the system boots into vista as normal but that error message is annoying.
Tells me to fix bootmgr using fdisk. How do I do that?
Thanks.I previously had Vista installed under the beta with Tiger and there was no issues at all regarding boot times or error messages. (Boot times being quite nippy considering)
I did reformat the hard drive space partitioned in side Vista installation as NTFS. As I am only a switcher for a year or so I imagine there may be something I am missing but given the text when I try to boot into Vista, it looks to be the boot loader that is erroring and that looks the same as a GRUB loader failing.
I just do not get why a BETA product would work fine, then after a fresh installation of the new Mac OSX 10.5 with the final version of boot camp I would receive errors like this.
I have reclaimed the hard drive space and split the disk again but the same error persists. Previously I was showing off my Macbook to work mates showing how it handled Windows as well as the user friendly OSX. Now all I can show them is a 5 minute loading screen full of non booting Vista as they look at me like some kind of idiot. (Which depending on who you ask is possibly correct) -
Load_hdi: timed out waiting for driver to load
Howdy,
I'm having a bit of trouble with my computer refusing to mount disks, images, etc. This seems to start after trying to mount an external hard drive (passport from western digital). After plugging in the passport, I can no longer mount external hard drives, disk images, etc. After I reboot, I can mount other exteranl drives and images just fine. This behavior was replicated after I rebooted and tried to mount the passport again. Does any one have any idea what may be causing this?

PowerBook Mac OS X (10.4.9)Today I did a bit more troubleshooting. From the Terminal, the command-line tools for working with DMG files gave me the same error. So, I did a Safe Boot of my Mac, holding the SHIFT key from the tone at restart until the gray loading screen appeared. It took quite a while to get to the login screen, and towards the end of the wait, the fans on my G5 were running at full-speed. I was able to open disk images, so I repaired permissions and then reinstalled the latest security update. Rebooted back into my normal desktop and everything is working now. I am not sure what the problem was. It's fixed now. Hope this helps.

Hi mate
You need a special board which has been designed especially for the Qosmio F30-141.
Such motherboards and all compatible parts can be purchased from the Toshiba ASP in your country.
Here you can find the ASP:
