  • X79A-GD65 (8D) - Cannot populate all 8 slots

It appears that whenever I run a full complement of 8 DIMMs that I cannot boot.  Here's the details:
MSI X79A-GD65 (8D) running latest release firmware 1.70 with default NVRAM settings
    Intel i7 3930k
    8 x 8GB G.SKILL DDR3 1600 DIMMs
Default RAM settings (1333MHz without XMP)
It appears that the issue might be with slots 7/8 on the motherboard.  When I populate 4 slots as shown below everything tests out OK but the system only recognizes 24GB of RAM.
When I populate the slots as below on the left, I get the full 48GB of RAM and memtest86 runs as expected.  When I populate as shown on the right, or populate all of the slots, I get up to "b0" on the diag LED and the system will reset itself in a boot loop (no video at this stage, so it's just booting every 10 seconds or so with no video output)
When swapping around memory in the 48GB configuration all of my sticks test out correctly, so it doesn't appear to be the RAM itself.  Is anyone running one of these boards with a full 64GB of RAM successfully?

Have you tried just two modules and tested all your pairs in the same known working slots? You may have a faulty module.
Yes, I've booted with each of 4 sets of pairs and let one pass through of the default memtest86 test run, and everything tests out (I had previously RMAd one of the kits as a single stick tested bad after trying this the first time).

Otherwise, does the system read all of your memory if you insert your modules into slots 2, 4, 6 and 8? If so, Slot 7 sounds faulty. If not, maybe both.
I haven't tried this yet, as it isn't listed as a supported configuration in the documentation.  I'll give it a go tonight.

  • X79A-GD65 gen3 FF debug code - then recycle

Much like Douchbag in this thread: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=157198.msg1156258  I am having almost the same problem. When I boot the PC, all the proper LEDs light up and all looks good however the debug LED panel displays: 19, 61, FF. After about 5 seconds of showing FF, the PC shuts off. Five more seconds later it powers up again. The process starts over.
Below I have listed the steps I have taken during troubleshooting all with the same result upon boot:
    - Try booting with RAM in DIMM 1 and 2
    - Try booting with RAM in DIMM 3 and 4
    - Try booting with RAM in DIMM 1 (all 4 modules)
    - Cleared CMOS
    - Switched from BIOS A to B
    - tried changing gfx card
    My Specs:
    Motherboard: MSI X79A-GD65 (gen3)
    Memory: Cosair 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 VENGENCE (PC3 12800) CML16GX3M4A1600C9
    PSU: Corsair TX Series V2 850W 850TX 80+ Bronze
    CPU: Intel Core i7-3820 Sandy Bridge-E 3.6GHz LGA 2011 130W Quad-Core Desktop Processor BX80619i73820
    HDD: INTEL SSD 520 Series 120GB SATA6 2.5 SSDSC2CW120A310
DVD Drive: ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner
Video: MSI GeForce GTX570 TWIN FROZR III POWER OC
But as this is a newer motherboard i am thinking it can't be the bios...butif anyone have any suggestions please let me know.

Eventhough i had to pay for the upgrade (mailing and 30 min work for the support guy) and they only upgraded one of the bios', it got fixed. And the system is now running like a charm.
    Glad to hear it is now up and running. To flash the other chip, please use the forum's USB flasher found here;
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108079.0
Double check the exact model of your mainboard as the UEFI/BIOS version may not be the same, and download the file from one of MSI's Websites. The reason I mention this is because there is a X79A-GD65 and a X79A-GD65(8D). They may use different versions.
