Edited version;
Before the purchase of an Intel i7 3820 for your mainboard, please check the UEFI/BIOS version installed. In most cases, there are green stickers on the BIOS chips with the 'as shipped' version written on them. On my X79A-GD65(8D), there are no green stickers, only black chips with red dots. In that situation, the only option is to check the date of manufacture & compare it to the UEFI/BIOS release dates, or contact MSI Tech Support with the serial number so they can check for you what version was shipped on the mainboard.
How do I get my i7 3820 CPU supported? The answer is either use a CPU that is supported (i7 3930k or i7 3960X), & flash the version that supports it, take it to a pc shop that can flash for you, or send it to MSI & have them flash it for you. Please keep in mind, if the mainboard is equiped with two BIOS chips, have both chips A and B flashed.

Hi! I have got about the same problem. I recieved 2 days ago my X79A-GD65 8D and i am about to recieve an intel i7 3820. But yesterday after reading different posts i'm starting wondering if i can actually get the processor to work with the motherboard out of the box. I checked the bios chip but it only has a red dot on it:/ My serial number is 601-7760-010B12051XXXXXX. Thank you:)

Split this off for you, resurrecting old threads won't get you far.

You will need to contact msi directly to check your bios version via s/n. Although thatboard was produced may 2012, check the bios release date and compare.

    Hey,
I looked in the manual at the led codes however L9 is not in the list from what I can see. Does anyone know what it means?
Edit: does it mean that the the cpu fan header detected no fan? I took it into the shop to see what they thought and then when I got home thought about it and was like wait a second i forgot to plug the heatsink fans in when i turned it on, i feel like a derp for this lol

Thanks for the feedback Cameron .

These are not error codes but status/checkpoint codes, indicating at which "initialization checkpoint" he system currently is at.
So, basically, the last one you get before the system restarts is 32 which means:

    CPU post-memory initialization is started
... and indicating a CPU problem.  Please remove your CPU and check for broken/bent socket pins, make sure the heatsink is not fastened to tight.  Quadruple check CPU power connectors.  Also test the board outside the case on a non-conducting surface with one memory module only (test different modules, if necessary).  Don't forget to clear CMOS.

  • X79A-GD65 gen3 FF debug code - then recycle

Much like Douchbag in this thread: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=157198.msg1156258  I am having almost the same problem. When I boot the PC, all the proper LEDs light up and all looks good however the debug LED panel displays: 19, 61, FF. After about 5 seconds of showing FF, the PC shuts off. Five more seconds later it powers up again. The process starts over.
Below I have listed the steps I have taken during troubleshooting all with the same result upon boot:
    - Try booting with RAM in DIMM 1 and 2
    - Try booting with RAM in DIMM 3 and 4
    - Try booting with RAM in DIMM 1 (all 4 modules)
    - Cleared CMOS
    - Switched from BIOS A to B
    - tried changing gfx card
    My Specs:

But as this is a newer motherboard i am thinking it can't be the bios...butif anyone have any suggestions please let me know.

Eventhough i had to pay for the upgrade (mailing and 30 min work for the support guy) and they only upgraded one of the bios', it got fixed. And the system is now running like a charm.
    Glad to hear it is now up and running. To flash the other chip, please use the forum's USB flasher found here;
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=108079.0
Double check the exact model of your mainboard as the UEFI/BIOS version may not be the same, and download the file from one of MSI's Websites. The reason I mention this is because there is a X79A-GD65 and a X79A-GD65(8D). They may use different versions.

  • Msi x79a-gd65 8d BSOD and Ram issue, Code 67

    Hi,
    Specs as follows:
    Mobo: msi x79a-gd65 8d (Bios: latest 4.4)
    CPU: 3960x
    RAM: 2x8GB Corsair dominator platinum 1866MHZ (CMD16GX3M2A1866C10)
    PSU: CM 1000watt
GPU: EVGA GTX 680 Classified 4GB
Mobo came back from MSI and they said there were bend pins, they fixed the bent pins. However the mobo still BSODs on stock settings and does not want to boot with 2x8Gb. It only boots with 1 stick.
I also get the code 67.
The mobo is only stable when I enable OC genie and run 1 ram module
    Please help, thanks in advance!

    >>Clear CMOS<< and retry. If no help try the second stick in any mem slot and see if it boots in any while other stick is installed too. If not try each stick individually to check if both are working.

    Hello
    my system specs:

I'll use this pc for litecoin mining also sometimes for gaming (dota 2). If I plug my gpu to motherboard without PCI riser cable there is no problem but I want to use PCI riser (x16). When I plug x16 riser to motherboard, it doesn't work (actually working with 03 error) debug leds showing "03" and after 15 seconds, motherboard restart itself for one time.
    I already tried as follows:
with riser cable, without gpu. (gen3 gen2 gen1 auto, tried all of them)    debug code 03

without riser cable, without gpu.                                                               everything is okay

As mentioned before, this is a non standard configuration attempt and the forum does not assist with it.
    sorry for bump.
okay, maybe someone can explain how can i assemble this 3 gpu to my motherboard, there is not enough space for 3 gpu, because toxic 280x is thicker than double slot (2.2 slot).

Try building this outside of the case on a non-conductive suface w/ only the cpu , cooler, psu and 1 stick of memory.
Finally, while it is out of the case, remove the cpu and inspect the cpu pins with a bright light and hd zoom or a magnifying glass. Perhaps you bumped the cooler or something and damage occured. (Those pins will bend very easily) Even one just slightly out of line can cause this.

  • Z77a-GD65 Debug Code 49 (Reboot cycle)

Saw a post about guidelines for posting threads here, lost it though. Sorry.
    Mainboard: MSI Z77a-GD65 Rev2.1
    BIOS Version: 10.5
    CPU: Intel Core i7-3770, 3.4GHz
    Memory: 4x4GB Kingston HyperX DDR3-1600 (PC-12600), 1.65v
    Graphics: MSI 670GTX
    Storage: OCZ Agility3 240GB SSD, Seagate 2TB 7200RPM
    PSU: Corsair HX750 (750W)
So the machine runs fine on default settings. I really can't complain about the performance, but there's a small issue. The BIOS reads the ram as 1333MHz and the automatic voltage is 1.5v. The information for the memory says it's rated at 1.65v and 1600MHz. If I change the settings in the BIOS to 1600MHz it will run, usually. If I set it to 1.65v, it doesn't run at all. Last night, after messing with it for a while the 1600MHz tweak worked, but this morning after a cold start up I ran into the problem again.
The actual issue is that it gets into a reboot cycle until the BIOS eventually resets itself. The last code on the debug LED is 49. I can't find documentation about what that specific code means. I've run MemTest86, the memory reads fine.
I've already contacted both MSI and Kingston explaining the issue to see if either side might have an idea, but thought I'd check here to get a broader chance at finding the issue. Any help is appreciated.
    To clarify:
    1333MHz and 1.5v works fine.
1600MHz and 1.5v works, usually. Doesn't seem to work from a cold start. Debug code 49 if it gets into a boot-loop.
1600MHz and 1.65v never works. Debug code 49.

I'm back again, and with SOME good news.
I just got my RMA'd kit of memory (2x8GB Corsair Vengeance LP, XMP: 10-10-10-27, 1600MHz, 1.5v), installed them into DIMMs 2 and 4. Reset my CMOS and when it started up prompted me about the change in memory. Went in, turned on XMP and changed nothing else - it went back into that code 49 death spiral. Swapping back and forth between the two BIOS and turning on the OC Genie, it's gotten to the desktop now. Without the Genie on though, it just keeps rebooting. I guess I'm cool with it, but I really wanted to do the overclocking myself.
It's currently running (mostly) stable at 4.0GHz on the CPU and the expected XMP values on the memory. So far the only problem I've run into was a red screen (VGA related, might be the MSI After Burner) but that's an issue for another forum I suppose. It still stutters when booting up though, which has me concerned. I'm wondering if maybe it has been the motherboard this whole time - or maybe the CPU. Or maybe I just don't get what the deal is with these settings anymore. It HAS been something like 6 years since I put a computer together from scratch. I feel like an old man with how so much has so much has changed, even knowing it's just details that shouldn't really be crippling me this much.
At this point I guess I just need to break it in to see that it's kosher.
Thanks again for all the quick responses xmad, and for your input as well flobelix and Bernhard. If any of you have any more thoughts, please share.

  • X79a-gd65 (8D) won't pass bios

     Hi,
I'm back again with my x79a-gd65 (8D)...I did a stupid thing I tested the "OC genie Software" from inside windows 7...
The program asked me to reboot so it could complete OC setup - so I did. It passed BIOS, loaded Windows login. Then I revieced  an error when logging in (something and userenv.dll), then getting a black screen (apperently "logged in"). Hit "ctrl+alt+del" and logging out, then "shut off".
Started it up, passed BIOS, I got the choice to Repair Windows or Start Normal. Trying Repair Windows first, it loads the files, then straight back to the choice again Repair Win or Norm... Testing start without repair i got a Blue Screen, reboot, and back to the choice after passing BIOS.
Shut off my computer, killed the PSU, switched on the PSU and then my computer. Now it doesn't pass BIOS check, I recieve a debug code "B2" (Legacy Option ROM Initialization)...
I've had the same setup since i bought it 14 months ago with no problems before this.
Any ideas? I'm in panic mode atm.
    MSI X79A-GD65 (8D)
    i7 3930K 3,2ghz
    32gb gSkill RAM
    Nvidia Quadro 2000D
    2 SSD-disks

Perform a full cmos clear of the bios and re-test.
Remember that when you are done you are going to need to re-set the Hard drive mode (IDE / AHCI / RAID) etc.

  • MSI X79A-GD65 no POST and no POST LED

Long story short, I was redoing my watercooling loop and the pump wasn't getting fed water correctly, leading to the CPU overheating. I let the computer cool down and made sure water was moving through it properly before turning it back on.
When I turned it back on, my computer wouldn't post, and there was no debug LED code coming on. I checked the voltages with a multimeter, everything seemed to read correctly except for the CPU Vcore on the voltage checkpoint: it was reading 0. I checked the EPS connector and it was delivering 12v.
So what do you guys think, dead motherboard or dead CPU?
    Specs:
    Core i7 3820
    MSI X79A-GD65 8D
    SLI EVGA GTX 580
    32gb Patriot Sector 7 1333 mhz RAM
    OCZ Deneva 2 480gb

I would remove and reinstall the cpu. While it is out inspect the cpu socket for bent pins.
Also, inspect the VRM section of the mainboard. Do you see any burn marks? Swelled capacitors etc? Any burning smell from the area?
Finally remove and re-seat all of the components and wiring. Just in case.
If still no help, either RMA both components or borrow a cpu to test.

  • MSI X79A-GD65 (8D) dE?

I'm getting dE on my MSI motherboard Post/Debug Code Display, what causing it? i took my motherboard/CPU yesterday to the retailer as i thought it was fried by my PSU failing but it boot to the bios
    CPU:Intel CORE i7 3930K
    MOBO:MSI X79A-GD65 (8D)
    PSU:Silverstone Strider Plus 850W ST85F-P
    GPU: gigabyte 6850
    RAM:G.Skill Ripjaws Z F3-17000CL11Q-16GBZL (4x4GB) DDR3
SOUND CARD:Creative Sound Blaster X-FI Titanium PCIe Fatal1ty Pro
when i came back to home i install the motherboard in my case and it gave my first dE and also it restarts at random at start up before i got the dE
when i place my motherhood on my desk and it boot to the bios with all my ram stick installed
then i place it back to case it still gave me the  dE and how when i put on the desk it gave me dE

I don't know, but I assume this, as you say it works fine outside the case.
When you insert it in the case you are getting the error. Nothing changes, except the mounting of the board. If that is the only change, then it can only be a short.
Only thing you didn't mention if this happens even without connecting the case wiring ?
Mount the board in the case with the designated stand-offs only. Then do not connect any case wiring. Start the PC by shorting the ON/OFF switch pins on the board jumper. Check if it starts. After that, connect the case wiring and test again. That way you will find out if its a short between the board and the case, or if you have a short on the case wiring.

  • X79A-GD65 (8D) memory issues.

Greetings Everyone! I've just joined this forum.
My issue is that i cant use all eight memory sockets without the board getting stuck in POST with the debug code 67.
I currently use the mainboard on this computer but with only 5 sticks in.
The memorysticks i use are two sets of "Corsair 16GB (4x4096MB) CL9 1600Mhz VENGEANCE Quad Channel" totalling 32GB.
I cannot add any of the remaining sticks in slot 4, 6 and 8. I've done it in all thinkable methods even test booting with every stick placed in every slot. took me a good two hours of testing.
I've also tried the sticks in a Gigabyte 1366 motherboard with four slots and both sets run on it.
I contacted Corsair and it looks like i have to send the memorysticks to them for a checkup but i wont know for sure until i hear from them later next week. I'll discuss the issue further with them then.
This is my current set-up (i point out that the parts i've changed are the Mainboard, CPU and memory from the 1366 computer)
    Mainboard: MSI X79A-GD65(8D).
    CPU: Intel Core i7-3820.
Memory: Two sets of Corsair Vengeance Quad channel 4x4Gb 1600MHz.
Graphics card: Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 OC.
    Main boot device: WD 500Gb.
    PSU: Corsair HX-650

Hi everyone and i must thank you for such speedy answers and support.
On the server issue. I do use alot of servers, not normal servers as you would think but gameservers. I like to run dedicated servers for like CS:S, Minecraft and such and i have startded playing ARMA:2 alot lately and i want to run them simultaneously for extended periods.
I was planning to install ARMA:2 in the RAM because of its extreme loading times when editing maps and missions. And also i like to run Firefox, Java, WinRAR and other background programs from the RAM.
I also want the amount of RAM for the pleasure of just having it. I understand how a primitive feeling that is but it feels good.
I understand now that i will never get all sticks to work but i do run 5 of them at this moment so i got 20GB of memory and already have set up a 12GB ramdisk.
I will discuss the issue with Corsair when we get in touch on the Support thread i've created hoping to send my modules to them and change them to a 8 stick kit and me paying the shipment and differance in price.
EDIT: Should i flash the BIOS anyway according to xmad's statement? Should i in that case default the BIOS and run only 2 sticks?
p.s. I have got to stop editing these posts....

  • Xpower II Enabling PCIE GEN3 give error/debug code 94 on LED display

hey guys I have an issue when I enable the PCIE GEN3 in the bios sometimes it boots no problem, but most of the time the system hangs and I get error/debug code 94 on the LED display and couple times when it boots to windows the screen just flickers. But when I disable GEN3 runs good. I have two gtx 690's in sli one in pcie 1 slot and the other in pcie 5 slot also I have the "force enable gen3" from NVidia. I hope somebody can clarify if I can run the 690's in GEN3 PCIE 3.0 on this board. Thanx..

As PirateDog said it is a matter of luck and the individual sample/ combination of board and cpu. Some will work fine some don't. MY 3820 works fine on my X79A-GD65 (8D) and all Nvidia vgas I've tested (GTX670, GTX680 Lightning in SLI and without and GTX780). Still there is no guarantee. If it works fine with Gen 2 on your machine but won't with Gen 3 you're simply out of luck.
