X79A-GD65 (8D) with 8x16GB memory, anyone?

I have a X79A-GD65 (8D) motherboard. Started by setting it up with Kingston 2x4=8 GB (KHX1600C9D3B1K2/8GX) and this works just fine. Trying to install 8 x Kingston KVR16R11D4K4/64I for 128 GB fails. Tried two modules in DIMM 1 / 3. The three blue LEDs light on the motherboard, LED display says 'b0', but no screen activity.
Also updated from BIOS v 1.70 to v 1.80.
Has anyone successfully tried this motherboard with 128 GB memory?

You messed up badly here. The 16GB modules you've got are registered RAM. Server boards can deal with the clock driver of those modules but desktop boards cannot.
If it was just ECC RAM (not registered) then it might have worked even if the CPU and mobo didn't support ECC modules (according to standards at least, ECC RAM is not officially supported by X79A-GD65 nor Core i processors), registered RAM however is really not going to work.
How the heck did you end up with this kind of RAM modules anyway? Shops with personel having even the very basic technical expertise would never give these to you for use on a desktop board.

  • X79A-GD65 (8D) Max RAM Memory

I'm in the proccess of setting up my new pc. My main reason for going for the "X79A-GD65 (8D)" is that it can use up to 128 Gb RAM. There are some using 64 Gb RAM but I'm looking for any information where someone runs this with 128 Gb RAM.
Q: Is there anyone in the forum who has any relevant information on this
    Any suggestion would be appreciated.

That 128GB RAM is the max theoretical value.
The real memory amount depends on your processor.
But you didn't say anything about it ...
Anyway, in most of the cases you are limited to 32-64GB RAM.

  • X79A-GD65(8D) with i7-3820 weak overclock.

Hello again. It was a long time ago i was here and i thought i could drop in here for a little discussion.
I'm trying to overclock my CPU to a cool 5GHz as i once did with crazy voltages everywhere before i knew better, anyway i cant get it stable today with safe voltages, not even reasonable BCLK's or anything.
I cant get over 105MHz even at VCore at 1.44v SA at 1.2, PLL at 1.95 with all turbo functions and EIST turned off...
Anyway, i can forward you some links to some pictures.
What i would like is some tips for getting a stable OC.... I've seen people on the net who has like 130MHz BCLK and 37x multi but i don't know how they go it stable.
    Now i'm running 105MHz BCLK with a 43x multi.

I would be glad if knowing people could give tips and tricks about how to stabilize CPU at higher BCLK's so i can use the multiplier to get to 5GHz if possible.
Why you might ask, well simply to have done it. Once i've got there (if possible) i'll downclock to around 4GHz or even stock maybe since the CPU has never bottlenecked or ever will in any forseable future.
To start i've put together a list of different voltages for raising the question about what its maximum recomended setting is(Preferably with the Intel i7-3820) and what they might be called on the MSI board or if it's event possible to change the value for it.
    VTT
    PLL
    VVC
    VSA
    PCH1.1
    PCH1.5
Thats all the voltage settings i could think of exept DRAM voltages.
And as a little off topic adventure slightly connected to this cpu/socket, i've heard rumors both here on Swedish sites and other that a Ivy Bridge-E will be marketed around the time that Haswell(Which i suppose is a Ivy development and not a whole new architexture) comes out.

    Hi flobelix.
Okay, that sounds weird. I have a memory of me getting to 5GHz and discussing it on a forum where they said i was going to degrade my circuits really fast since i used crazy voltages everywhere, I have a feeling it was on this forum in a kind of "laid-back" sub-forum.
But i cant seem to find any threads other then a memory issue thread some months back when my system was new. You and a few other forum-elites helped me aswell. Getting a bit scared now.
Anyway it does feel like running through a brick wall with the Bclk. I can set my strap to 1.0, 1.25...
Do you or anyone have any tips or tricks on what i should test and change?
EDIT: I have to roam the streets of google and look through the deepest parts of the internets to unveil this mystery.
    EDIT2: Mein got! I've found it https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=161657.0
-- Allegedly i've use a bclk strap och 1.25 and set bclk at 125MHz with a multiplier at x40

  • X79A-GD65 (8D) will not boot with 4930K or 3930K

    Short version:
My system will not boot but gets stuck at "09 Power on South Bridge Initialization"
    Detailed description:
I just bought this system and am when I tried to start it it got stuck at "09 Power on South Bridge Initialization". I have removed everything that is not necessary (gfx-card, HDDs, etc.) and only have the CPU and one memory stick inserted (in slot 1 as per the manual). I have also unplugged and put back all power cables from the PSU several times. I have also tried using BIOS A and B.
As I read on this forum that a BIOS update was needed for IVY-Bridge CPUs I bought a 3930K today to see if I could get the system up and running but it still gives me the same error code.
My board serial number is 601-7760-010B1312109204, assuming it is manufactured 1312 = December 2013.
I don't know the BIOS revision as I have never managed to get past the 09 status code.
Any ideas on what the problem could be?
Bought this monster PC as I have a delivery for a client in need of some RAM-heavy processing, so am really starting to feel stressed out about this by now.
    Thanks in advance!
    System details:
     - MSI X79A-GD65 (8D) X79 S-2011 ATX
     - INTEL CORE I7 4930K 3.4GHZ 12MB S-2011
     - INTEL 530 80GB SATA SSD MLC RESELLER KIT
     - INTEL 530 480GB SATA SSD MLC BULK (4 of these)
     - FRACTAL DESIGN INTEGRA R2 750W
     - ASUS GEFORCE GT 210 1GB DDR3 PCI-E VGA/DVI/HDMI SILENT
     - KINGSTON 64GB 1600MHZ DDR3 ECC REG CL11 DIMM (4X16GB) W/TS (two kits, 128GB in total, don't really need ECC but that's what I could find needing 16GB sticks)

even compared to just 10 years ago sales staff have became really dumb as there just hiring people who do not care about anything as long as they get there cut of a sale (usually all they know is basic Consumer parts they stock) and nearly non of them unless they specialize in that level of equipment will have 0 idea what they work with on a pro level part (ECC memory tends to be used on servers and Professional workstations so if they do not use that type of gear then they probably have no idea what ECC really is at all)!
also in that time some major things have happened especially with computer parts like the memory controller moved from the Chipset to the CPU same with the SATA controller , onboard GPU (thats now on the CPU and some have it some don't) and alot of other things and I guess that the people you dealed with had no idea the memory support has very little to do with the board (all the board can do is have BIOS Timing sets now and lists of parts it supports) and is now to do with the CPU alot more as it has the important stuff on it (there very close to a SOC (System On Chip) now)!
if you plan on building another computer remember to do some research yourself before you get a CPU as it is nearly the most important thing of all and they have different features tied to them and do not expect sales guys to have a idea unless there also a Technical support staff member too and work on computers that are of the same class your trying to make and have at least used the same level gear (usually if your doing something like that find a friend who is a computer nerd tell him what your trying to do and get him to help you choose all the parts)!
let me know how it goes when you get the Xeon and have it installed?

  • X79A-GD65 (8D) memory issues.

Greetings Everyone! I've just joined this forum.
My issue is that i cant use all eight memory sockets without the board getting stuck in POST with the debug code 67.
I currently use the mainboard on this computer but with only 5 sticks in.
The memorysticks i use are two sets of "Corsair 16GB (4x4096MB) CL9 1600Mhz VENGEANCE Quad Channel" totalling 32GB.
I cannot add any of the remaining sticks in slot 4, 6 and 8. I've done it in all thinkable methods even test booting with every stick placed in every slot. took me a good two hours of testing.
I've also tried the sticks in a Gigabyte 1366 motherboard with four slots and both sets run on it.
I contacted Corsair and it looks like i have to send the memorysticks to them for a checkup but i wont know for sure until i hear from them later next week. I'll discuss the issue further with them then.
This is my current set-up (i point out that the parts i've changed are the Mainboard, CPU and memory from the 1366 computer)
    Mainboard: MSI X79A-GD65(8D).
    CPU: Intel Core i7-3820.
Memory: Two sets of Corsair Vengeance Quad channel 4x4Gb 1600MHz.
Graphics card: Sapphire Radeon HD 6950 OC.
    Main boot device: WD 500Gb.
    PSU: Corsair HX-650

Hi everyone and i must thank you for such speedy answers and support.
On the server issue. I do use alot of servers, not normal servers as you would think but gameservers. I like to run dedicated servers for like CS:S, Minecraft and such and i have startded playing ARMA:2 alot lately and i want to run them simultaneously for extended periods.
I was planning to install ARMA:2 in the RAM because of its extreme loading times when editing maps and missions. And also i like to run Firefox, Java, WinRAR and other background programs from the RAM.
I also want the amount of RAM for the pleasure of just having it. I understand how a primitive feeling that is but it feels good.
I understand now that i will never get all sticks to work but i do run 5 of them at this moment so i got 20GB of memory and already have set up a 12GB ramdisk.
I will discuss the issue with Corsair when we get in touch on the Support thread i've created hoping to send my modules to them and change them to a 8 stick kit and me paying the shipment and differance in price.
EDIT: Should i flash the BIOS anyway according to xmad's statement? Should i in that case default the BIOS and run only 2 sticks?
p.s. I have got to stop editing these posts....

  • X79A-GD65 8D problem with built in BIOS utilities (browser, etc)

Good day. I have my X79A-GD65 8D running for about a week now paired with i7 3930k. The board is working wonderfully, however there is just one issue. After installing winki from the cd and returning to the bios to use the built in browser or MSI live update, the white splash screen appears for a while and shortly after a black screen appears and remains.
Ive tried leaving the disc in the drive and have the browsre run directly from the CD but still no luck. I've also borrowed the install DVD of a friend of mine who has an identical board but it still doesnt work.
Please note that I am on the latest BIOS, version 1.7.
    Any help will be appreciated.

Must be talking about Winki? The Software Application User Guide covers it pretty well how it all works and such. Using Live Update is not recommended to be installed or used. Do all UEFI/BIOS updates and driver updates manually from the downloaded files available at the MSI Websites.

Can anyone help me with upgrading memory in my older iMac? I currently only have 1gb of memory so as you can imagine my machine is quite slow. I check in my system profiler and it shows I do have a memory slot open. It is using a DDR2 and I was told that the latest are DDR3 and I need to find out if I can run that on my model number. This info came from a tech guy at best buy.

That is what I needed.  You can upgrade to a maximum of 6gb of ram and need the following type:
200-pin PC2-6400 (800MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  You can easily find it online, here is an example: http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/Intel_Core_2_Duo_PC2-6400

  • MSI X79A GD65 8D, any good with 4930K overclocking?

    Hello.
I bought a X79A GD65 8D motherboard for a cheap price, and was wondering if someone know how it perform with the 4930K ?
How will it overclock compared to 3930k, advantages, disadvantages?
My aim is to have the 4930K stable on 4.5Ghz 24/7, if the cpu is from a good batch and don't need to much voltage.
I'm a little worried that the motherboard is getting maybe a little old ? Any thoughts?

Biggest concern is the date of manufacture of the mainboard as to what UEFI/BIOS version is on it. More than likely if older existing stock, it will have a UEFI/BIOS on it that only supports a Sandy CPU. If really old stock, some Sandy CPU's will not be supported either without an update. As with most Intel CPU's, OC ability is 'luck-of-the-draw'.

  • X79A-GD65 (8D) - Cannot populate all 8 slots

It appears that whenever I run a full complement of 8 DIMMs that I cannot boot.  Here's the details:
MSI X79A-GD65 (8D) running latest release firmware 1.70 with default NVRAM settings
    Intel i7 3930k
    8 x 8GB G.SKILL DDR3 1600 DIMMs
Default RAM settings (1333MHz without XMP)
It appears that the issue might be with slots 7/8 on the motherboard.  When I populate 4 slots as shown below everything tests out OK but the system only recognizes 24GB of RAM.
When I populate the slots as below on the left, I get the full 48GB of RAM and memtest86 runs as expected.  When I populate as shown on the right, or populate all of the slots, I get up to "b0" on the diag LED and the system will reset itself in a boot loop (no video at this stage, so it's just booting every 10 seconds or so with no video output)
When swapping around memory in the 48GB configuration all of my sticks test out correctly, so it doesn't appear to be the RAM itself.  Is anyone running one of these boards with a full 64GB of RAM successfully?

    Quote from: 5hr4pn3l on 22-June-12, 05:06:58
Have you tried just two modules and tested all your pairs in the same known working slots? You may have a faulty module.
Yes, I've booted with each of 4 sets of pairs and let one pass through of the default memtest86 test run, and everything tests out (I had previously RMAd one of the kits as a single stick tested bad after trying this the first time).
    Quote from: 5hr4pn3l on 22-June-12, 05:06:58
Otherwise, does the system read all of your memory if you insert your modules into slots 2, 4, 6 and 8? If so, Slot 7 sounds faulty. If not, maybe both.
I haven't tried this yet, as it isn't listed as a supported configuration in the documentation.  I'll give it a go tonight.

ASUS DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS Black SATA 24X DVD Burner
Been having issues with BSOD's and random boot issues (has trouble posting on occasion). Everyone of my error codes pointed to memory (0x1A for example). I had 4 sticks of 4GB ram in DIMM slots 1, 3 , 5, and 7. Memtest86+ ran smoothly overnight, however, Prime95 detected a hardware issue. Reading online told me that RAM is usually the culprit, so I switched down to 1 DIMM of RAM and so far Prime95 is running fine. I have heard of issues with slots 5 & 7. Can anyone confirm this? Also, this is just two packs of dual channel RAM. Would I be better off getting a quad channel pack?
    Thanks,
    Devin

Doesn't always matter. Henry, one of the forum mods has reported having three identical part number sticks, and all three had different makers chips on them. +1 on the recommendation to get a matched quad kit for your rig.
so true, i have had many packs of  dual channel memory kits that have different chips even though there the same make and model! (even though there the same type kits doesnt mean there the same chips on the ram modules, manufacturers will update them after only a few months of in some cases weeks as better ones become avalible or the ones there using run out)

I can't install the Intel LAN Drivers for my MSi X79A GD65 [8D] Mainboard...
I have Windows 8 installed and whenever I try to install the LAN Driver, the system freezes and I need to switch off and back on...
I have tried everything or everything I can think of to get around this issue but no success :(
I have tried on a clean install of Windows 8 and tried various different versions and still the problem occurs.
Has anyone else experienced this issue and anyone know if a fix or something I could try?
    Many thanks in advance

My Driver problem, along with Memory issues, clock and animations running double speed and Memory_Management errors BSOD have all been resolved since rolling back my firmware update. I also got all my ram replaced by Kingston so they all had the same revisions and this corrected the issue where 4 sticks were registering as different/slower ram.
Not even the MSi LAN Driver worked prior to these changes...

Much like Douchbag in this thread: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=157198.msg1156258  I am having almost the same problem. When I boot the PC, all the proper LEDs light up and all looks good however the debug LED panel displays: 19, 61, FF. After about 5 seconds of showing FF, the PC shuts off. Five more seconds later it powers up again. The process starts over.
Below I have listed the steps I have taken during troubleshooting all with the same result upon boot:
    - Try booting with RAM in DIMM 1 and 2
    - Try booting with RAM in DIMM 3 and 4
    - Try booting with RAM in DIMM 1 (all 4 modules)
    - Cleared CMOS
    - Switched from BIOS A to B
    - tried changing gfx card

Eventhough i had to pay for the upgrade (mailing and 30 min work for the support guy) and they only upgraded one of the bios', it got fixed. And the system is now running like a charm.
    Glad to hear it is now up and running. To flash the other chip, please use the forum's USB flasher found here;

Double check the exact model of your mainboard as the UEFI/BIOS version may not be the same, and download the file from one of MSI's Websites. The reason I mention this is because there is a X79A-GD65 and a X79A-GD65(8D). They may use different versions.

  • X79A-GD65 (8D) - Get stuck at 12x cpu ratio multiplier or 1200MHz

Hi all.  Just wanted to see if anyone else observed this with the new X79 chipset motherboard and the 3930K or 3960X sandy bridge-e cpu.
When trying to overclock the motherboard in any way
    1) CPU Ratio set to any number
    2) Per Core Maximum ratio / multiplier
    3) OC Genie II
and then trying a CPU stress utility such as Prime95
The CPU gets locked at 1200Mhz, or 12 x 100Mhz and never goes higher than that.  At the same time, the temperature sensors believe the CPU is locked at 91 degrees celsius.  So I believe on this bios version of 1.2 on the MS-7760 motherboard (X79A-GD65), it thinks 91 degrees is too hot, and never goes above 1200MHz.  I've also tried OC Genie and manual overclocking at bios version 1.1, and I cannot go over 1200Mhz.
Only at stock speeds (no overclocking), with the 3930K, at full CPU load tests with Prime95, it does go to 3500Mhz, or 35 x 100, correctly.
Right now I cannot overclock at all, whether with OC Genie, or manual cpu ratio multipliers.
Tweaktown and HWBot and several other websites have observed this.  I'm running the latest 1.2 bios, and still get stuck at 12x.
    http://hwbot.org/forum/showthread.php?s=51e18bdfe400391d0955716a5c66343d&p=138647#post138647
    http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/4423/msi_x79a_gd65_intel_x79_motherboard_review/index5.html

Scratch that.  It was happy yesterday, but first boot of the morning today and back to stuck at 12x/91C.  Will changing other voltages remedy this?  I read something on a review website suggesting this was a problem with the actual 3930K/3960X chips, and not necessarily a motherboard issue.
If I raise my cpu base clock from 100 to 125 and use a 36 multiplier, the machine forces the memory to run at 2,000 MHz, which according to the SPD shown in bios should be OK, but I couldn't get it to boot like that.  Is there anything I can change to allow the machine to work in that configuration?
Edit:  Just read yet another OC review (this time on HardwareSecrets) and found the following:
"The “correct” way of overclocking Intel CPUs with Turbo Boost technology is to change the clock multiplier that each core will use when the Turbo Boost technology kicks in."
I just tried changing the core ratio limit for all six cores to 45, setting the cpu ratio to auto, and leaving the core voltage at 1.375V, and it seems to work again.  Boots into Win7, coretemp displays correct temperatures, and when I load the cpu using prime95, it hits 4.5GHz.  I will try setting core voltage to auto also so that the cpu doesn't stay at 1.375V at idle when not necessary.  I'd still like to OC the memory in theory - not sure how much boost I'd get by running the memory above 1600 MHz.  I'll be using this PC for some computational fluid dynamics, so every bit of speed I can eek out of it will be put to use.
Edit 2:  Auto core voltage works, vcore drops to 0.840V at idle, and idle temps drop back down closer to room temperature (using an Antec Sonata Elite case with a Corsair H80 water cooler, so slightly less airflow than ideal but I have the case fans optimized for now by relocating the system blower fan to a drive bay and adding a 120mm fan in the lower drive bays pulling air out of the side of the case).
