X800xt vga or 9800xt pro adc+dvi ?

Hi
Yesterday, I received a second hand X800XT that I plugged in my PowerMac (2x2GHz). First deception, it had a DVI and a VGA port, not a DVI+ADC as the 9600 I used to have until then.
I worked a moment but never could get a DVI signal. I however got an expected 1600x1200 through the VGA port. Seemed responsive using Aperture but it'd have to be recalibrated.
The seller confirmed me that this very card can only feed 2 VGA monitors, no DVI.
He proposed me to swap my X800XT for a 9800XT with the expected port and 256MB of VRAM.
So, my question is:
As I work primarily with Final Cut Studio and Aperture, what's better for me:
1) To keep the X800XT and feed 2 VGA (LCD) monitors with it?
2) To go for the 9800XT
3) to just forget about that and keep my 9600 1st gen with 64MB which at least could decently feed both of my ADC and DVI monitors but not quick enough to work in real time with Motion or Aperture?
I really need help here, thanks in advance.

Hi
I've seen some X800XTs on eBay which are PC cards flashed with the Mac ROM. These happened to explicitly state the DVI port was only functional as a second analogue VGA port using an adpater (supplied). It sounds as if the card you received is also a flashed PC version.
The 'official' Mac version has a DVI and ADC port (both fully functional). It's fairly expensive in comparison though and Mac compatible ATI cards in general seem to be in short supply at the moment.
If you've already got two digital DVI or ADC monitors, I'd personally be reluctant to switch to analogue VGA which would be a backwards step. I guess a fourth option, return the card and buy the official Mac version when available would be the best solution, budget permitting.

  • ADC DVI HDMI for external viewing of HD footage

    Hi,
I have an HDTV that I want to use as a second monitor but primarily as an HD monitor for external playback from Final Cut. I need to know if this will work before I go and buy all of these cables.
Can I go out of my ADC with a ADC > DVI then go into the TV with DVI to HDMI? Would that work. Can I bypass the DVI and just find an ADC > HDMI cable? I don't even know if there is such a thing.
    Thanks for the help.

I just posted this on another msg board regarding the topic::

I just received my cables in the mail today and set everything up.
    This is what I did:
    Dual Mac G5 2.5 w/ ATI x800XT
    DVI -> Apple Cinema Display
ADC -> Belkin ADC to DVI Monitor Adapter -> Gefen DVI to HDMI Cable
    Going to a Samsung 32" LN-S3251D
I did run into some little issues that I am trying to resolve. For some reason this setup did not initially work because my television would not switch to HDMI input. I don't think it was receiving a signal although in my system preferences it detected both displays. So I put the cinema display on the adc to dvi adapater and the LCD TV directly to the DVI output on the ATI card. This worked but tweaking resolutions and messing with the mirror mode wasn't producing what I wanted.
So while the computer and all the displays were still on, I switched the cables back to the original set up. Works perfect. I have 1 inch of black space running vertically to the left and right of my desktop (on the LCD TV). My cinema display looks the same as before. This is on mirror mode.
The thing I can not figure out, is how the **** can I keep this setup without losing the signal to the tv. If i switch to a different input source on the LCD, I can not get back to the HDMI with the computer showing
I am kinda new to this stuff... Any suggestions?

  • ADC-DVI = green screen

    Hello
I experienced the "green screen" problem connecting a second monitor to a G5. I suppose it's a problem of wiring in the ADC-DVI adapter. Does somebody know how to hack the adapter to let the monitor get the right signal from red and blue channels? ADC-VGA adapters are no longer available, and I don't want to put a second video card.
    thanks to everybody

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
First, check that no pins within the connectors are bent.
If you want to rewire, here are some pinouts:
    ADC connector pinout
    DVI connector pinout
    VGA connector pinouts

  • ADC-DVI issues ?

I am using Boot Camp on a 2.66 Mac Pro. I have a ADC-DVI adapter on a second monitor, to which I have plugged in my USB mouse. I note that after the last set of updates, when I boot into Win XP, the mouse is off. If I quickly (within 20 seconds or so) go, and unplug and replug in the USB cable from the ADC-DVI adapter, the mouse comes back on. If I wait too long, this doesnt work, and I have no mouse no matter where I plug it into .
    Anyone else see this ?
    Mad Dog

So can you confirm that this is the adapter you are using, and that the power supply (top item in the picture) is plugged into a live outlet and appears to be providing power to the display?

Since Friday i have a Mac Pro.
I connect my old Adc Cinema Display, with an ADC-DVI Adapter.
    Everything work fine.
I have another 17" ADC Display.
Is it possible to connect two ADC Displays, with two ADC-DVI Adaperts to the NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT Graphiccard without a problem?
    Thanks
    Greetings from Vienna

I'm seeing a lot of this.
    Pay attention closely.
If you have an ADC display and you want to connect it to the new Mac Pro, you must buy a different adapter. The ones supplied with the Mac Pro do not connect an ADC display to a DVI Mac Pro. You need to buy one that has a power supply and a USB port. DrBott and Apple make them.

  • Mini- DVI to VGA adapter Or is that, DVI to DVI?

I am having difficulty figuring out which adapter to purchase if I want to use my MacBook to make a Keynote or PowerPoint Presentation with an LCD projector.
Do I need the Mini- DVI to VGA adapter, or is it DVI to Video adapter, or DVI to DVI adapter? Good grief! I've made fabulous-looking slides and just want to take my computer to the lecture hall, connect it to their projector, and give my talk. How does one decide which cable to get, if I don't know for certain what kind of projector they are using?
Aren't all LCD projectors standardized this way?
    Thanks for the clarification.
    ~ john

As mentioned, VGA is much more common than DVI is on projectors, so the mini-DVI to VGA will certainly work more often than the mini-DVI to DVI will.
It costs $19USD, so I would get both and use the best option available to you when you get to the location and see what kind of projector they have.
You also may want to pack the VGA and a DVI cable just in case. You never know if the location will have one on hand, or if it gets misplaced just in time for your arrival.

  • Can I use a 2009 iMac as external display for 2007 macbook pro with DVI port only

I have a late 2009 imac with minidisplay port and  a 2007 macbook pro with DVI port. I connected a mini diaplay port to DVI cable but all I get on the imac is a blank screen when I press F2. Can I use the imac this way?

I'm not sure if it works with DVI but your late 2009 must be a 27". Try Command-F2 or Copmmand-Fn-F2

bit of a shame as this cable/convertor was recommended on these boards by another user and was definately not cheap
I may have recommended this based on my own experience with it and the fact that it is designed for AppleTV specifically and is actually sold by Apple.
Have you contacted Kanex support to query what the issue might be?
Might be worth trying to cycle display resolutions with the remote, see black screen recovery:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3176
I have not used mine for a few months as I got a new HDMI equipped projector - it is not impossible that Apple have scuppered functionality with a software update though.
If you cannot get it to work can you return it to the vendor?  I would not have recommended this device if Apple weren't selling it for this very purpose - even if a software update prevented protected content playback it should not stop you using Airplay of non-protected material.
My suspicion would be some kind of incompatibility when the device is working out what resolutions the projector supports.  It could even be a faulty Kanex adapter.

  • ADC/dvi video  card

Is it possible to get a ADC/Dvi video card for an open PCi X slot? or would I be better off getting a card w/2 dvis and purchasing the adapter because it is older technology? I have an older 23" display.

A PCI slot wouldn't have the extra connector that provides the display power, so ADC cards are only made for AGP slots.

  • ADC - DVI  - ADC Connection possible?

    Hi Everyone,
We put one of our editing machines around to the other room to get it out of the way. In order to make the cable long enough we had to buy an ADC-DVI converter. Run it to a 15' DVI cable, to the mac, then that DVI connection back to an ADC connection on the graphic card. The monitor won't turn on. Is there something plain wrong with connecting things this way around? Any help on the topic would be mucho appreciated since we tried to upgrade to a new card and still experiencing the same problem. Perhaps some kind of incompatibility issue with stepping back and forth between the connections?
The monitors are 1 23" Studio and one 17" Studio both LCDs. They are in proper working order, and if you connect direct into the ADC port without the adapter it works. Radeon X800 Mac edition card under the hood as well.

Yes. as far as I can tell, the only time any problems come up is when the ADC-DVI adapter gets thrown into the equation (although, it does work when I want to send a signal to a regular DVI monitor) its left me completely clueless and apple tech couldn't figure out what was going on. You pretty much described our set up perfectly. Seems to be quite the troubleshoot here.

ADC port on graphics card, to ADC to DVI adapter, to
15' DVI-D or DVI-I cable, to DVI to ADC adapter (the
one with the power supply), to ADC LCD display should
    work.
Does the ADC monitor work with the DVI to ADC adapter
if you plug the adapter directly into the DVI port on
    the graphics card?

I have a Mac A1047 dual 2.0 and would like to use both ports, adc/dvi to hdmi is the an adapter for both? I am in Michigan is there a store here does apple store carry anything like this and do I have to go online?

Hello, it may be tough finding an ADC->DVI adapter, & not certain ADC->DVI->HDMI 2 adapters will work.
I'm reasonably certain Apple no longer carries anything for ADC.

  • Mac Pro and DVI to Video Adapter

I just received a new Mac Pro with a GeForce 7300 card and was planning to use it in part to display video on a set of TV monitors using the Apple DVI to Video Adapter. Try as I might I have not been able to get the computer to recognize a TV regardless of the DVI port and using both S-Video and RCA. I now see that in Apple's store the converter is classified as Requiring a "MacBook Pro, Mac mini or Power Mac G5 with DVI port". Not sure if there's any way around this. The adapter has worked fine in the past with both a Mac Mini and a G5 tower. If anyone knows a possible workaround or if an updated adapter is forthcoming I would appreciate the information.

Just to be clear here: There is no way to get S-Video
output from my $~2700 machine (with the stock
7300gt)? Not even with (maybe forthcoming) additional
adapters? This is pretty embarrassing. Actually I'm
    sorta angry.
Are there any other options like DVI->VGA->S-Video
maybe? I surely won't dump $150 into the trash just
to have that (supposedly) noisy beast of a x1900
screaming around here. Just for S-Video. This is
    silly.
There are VGA to S-Video converters but they cost more than the Apple adapter. Here is one. Probable a bit fancier than you want. There are others.
    <http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/PC-TVvideoadapter.html>
The Apple adapter is cheap because all the work is being done in the video card when it detects the adapter. The video card outputs the S-Video brightness and color, and the composite video on the DVI pins that would normally be used for analog red, green, and blue, using the A/D converters normally used for a CRT. The adapter just sends the signals to different connectors. The adapter won't do anything with a card that wasn't designed to output TV video.

  • G3 B & W Graphics cards - can I fit ADC/DVI?

    Ey up all,
Have just been given a trusted but old G3 350 B&W by my boss (for free!!) so I thought it would make a nice machine to use as a basic Photoshop/scanning machine for the missus to do her artwork on.
It's got 1gb of RAM and a newish 60GB Seagate 7200rpm HD so has all the bits I need. However, the graphics card is the original ATI 16mb with a VGA connector. Can I actually fit a newer card from a vendor like ATI that carries ADC or DVI, so I can use something like the classic 17" Apple LCD Studio Display (M7649)? There are loads of these displays floating about on ebay for a good price. If I can do this, it means I don't have to go for one of the matching blueberry CRT displays that take up a bit too much room on a desk.
I know I could go for a third-party TFT from the likes of Dell or ACER but being a typical machead, I like to keep it Apple all the way!!
Any suggestions are more than welcome and if you can put me on the right track price-wise, that'll be great.
    Pat

Unless you really want an ADC-based Apple LCD Display, I'd go for an LCD display that uses a VGA or DVI port. There are plenty of them available today, and new ones are not extremely expensive. The ADC connection provides the video signal and power to the display. Using an adapter to connect the Apple display's ADC connector to a DVI port doesn't provide the necessary power for the display. The B&W G3 has a dedicated 66 MHz PCI slot for a graphics card, but doesn't have a power supply with a lot of output (by today's standards). If you were to install a newer Mac-compatible Radeon with a DVI port to use an ADC display, you'd need Apple's adapter, to power the display. If you want to use a widescreen display, be sure that the display card supports its optimal resolution at the 16:9 aspect ratio. The original Radeon Mac Edition and Radeon 7000 Mac Edition featured VGA and DVI ports, as well as 32 MBs of DDR memory. These cards can be purchased secondhand for little now, although the original Radeon Mac Edition is more scarce. There are newer Radeon cards for Macs, like the 9200, but PCI versions are not as abundant as their AGP counterparts.

  • My MBP Retina doesn't allow the use of two Thunderbolt to DVI adapters. It only works with one TB - VGA adapter and one TB - DVI adapter. However now the color on the VGA connected monitor is slightly different.

The monitors are Viewsonic VA2406m-LED. The Display preferences show all three monitors but one monitor always says "No Signal" if they are both connected TB -> DVI.
The Color on the VGA connected one is slighly off. It seems like I should be able to connect two DVI monitors not sure why this is stopped. Does it have something to do with the Graphics card?

The problem was with the newEgg adapter. I just went to the Apple Store and bought an Apple adapter and the monitor now displays correctly.
For future reference, in case anyone experiences this problem:
the newEgg adapter is part number 9SIA1PU0P88920, described as a Thunderbolt Mini Displayporrt Display Port DP to DVI Adapter for APPLE Macbook Pro Air and the full description says it works for macbook pro, etc.
when this adapter is used, the macbook pro recognizes the monitor, but the monitor displays nothing.
When the apple adapter (MB507Z/B Mini Display Port to DVI Adapater) is used, the monitor displays correctly.
Of course, the individual newEgg part might simply be defective, but I doubt it.  moral -- spend the extra $$ and buy the Apple adapter.
