X86 Browsers, Compiler, Hardware, JVM
Hi,
I am new to Solaris X86 operating systems. I would like to know the following:
1. What browsers are available for this OS?
2. Are Sun Workshop/Forte C++ compilers available for this OS? If so which version.
What is your experience in using such compilers?
3. Does JDK 1.4. have any problems on this OS?
4. Has anyone used Dell Optiplex GX 110 533 Mhz for this OS? What has been your experience.
Do the drivers, devices work properly?
Kindly help.
Regards
Srini
ok, for some help with a browser; i.e. netscape, try this: (if you have Solaris installed already which I'll bet you do) open a terminal window and type in "man netscape" see if doesn't give you some run down on it, that is if you did a full install with man pages. Now do a cd to /usr/dt/bin then type in netscape and see if you don't get an automated install with the prompts for accepting licensing agreements and all that. Hopes this helps

How much big file can be executed or compiled by JVM/JRE?
The language, compiler, or JVM specs will probably say.
However, if you need to ask this question, then your classes are far too big. -
Oracle Java Compiler 11g - JVM ERROR
Hi Jdev Team,
I have an issue to report,
Sometimes when run a project and navigate through the pages, i get the following error message:
Oracle Java Compiler 11g
Unable to create an instance of the Java Virtual Machine
Located at path:
H:\jdevstudio1111\jdk\jre\bin\client\jvm.dll
The only way to solve this is delete the settings of the Jdev and the Jdev from the PC, and install again, with the associated waste of time as consecuence. Please you can give a light to resolve this issue? Thanks
Well i correct what i just said.
The problem doesn´t fix, with the erase of the jdev program folder or settings folder in windows user docs and settings. What else i can do!?, out of ideas in here.
Regards,
Leo

Question on Sun X series [x86/AMD64] Server hardware robustness
We have in the past used Sun SPARC based servers, ranging from E420R to E4500.
When a CPU or Memory module has failed on these, the system notes it and continues running until we can get a replacement and bring the system down gracefully during a maintenance window.
I know that x86 wasn't really designed for that kind of robustness. So, my question is, on the new AMD/Intel based servers, specifically the X4100M2, X4200M2 and the new X4450, what will they do if a CPU or RAM chip fails completely? Especially on the AMD servers, since the memory controller is built into the CPU.
Will they lock up like most x86 boxes, or has Sun managed to design a robust x86 system?

Announcing availability of x86 hosted cross compiler for SPARC/Solaris
We are pleased to announce the release for GCC For Sun Systems 4.2.0 cross compilers!
This is a Solaris/x86 hosted compiler with target code generation for
SPARC/Solaris systems. If you develop on your OpenSolaris, or Solaris
x86 laptop or desktop, you can now start compiling your sources for
SPARC systems. Almost all features available in the
native SPARC GCC For Sun Systems 4.2.0 compiler are available
for use in the cross compiler. Please refer to the mini cross compiler howto
page for additional details on install and usage, and gotchas in cross
development environment.
Please continue to provide us your feedback and issues, which helps
us make the product better.

Crash in jvm.dll: Object.clone()
I'm working on a desktop app that sometimes runs cpu- and memory-intensive graph manipulations. We just saw the following error. I don't like to assume that I've found a JVM bug, but of all the explanations I've thought of so far that seems to be by far the strongest.

Thanks, but I'd already found that out from the first search I did.
We have no JNI code. I am pretty certain that no library we use has any either, though if you have a 100% way to verify or enforce that, it could be helpful.
Short of parsing class files that isn't possible. A library might use a OS library so you can't just look for a shared library.
Assuming I'm right in that last paragraph, is it more likely that we found some sort of bug in Sun's native code (maybe already discovered?) or that there was a hardware failure (e.g. bad memory / CPU produces wrong bytes)?Or software on the system that is causing it. Patches in the wrong order, bad patches, corrupted, etc can cause it.

Is there a different part of hs_err_... that I could post to make answering these questions easier? The full thing didn't fit because of the character limit on this forum.An actual VM bug with a crash is only 'solvable' by creating a bug and attaching the crash file.
Posting it here is unlikely to produce a solution.
A solution is unlikely to show up soon via the bug nor the forums. If you have a sales/support contract with Sun that might lead to a solution.
If you don't have that then your only choice is to use log files to determine where the crash occured, and then try different code to see if it goes away. -

JVM Crash: with jre 1.6.0_18 but not with 1.5.0_14
Hello everyone,
I got the problem that my JVM crashes when I am using the jre 1.6.0_18 but the same code runs with an jre 1.5.0_14. The code contains some JNI parts and
is compiled with a JDK 1.5.0_14. The crash can not be reporduced within a debugger. The crash either occurs in the jvm.dll - as in the error log below - or when acessing the ntdll.dll.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks in Advance!
Here is the JVM crash report:

vm_info: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (16.0-b13) for windows-x86 JRE (1.6.0_18-b07), built on Dec 17 2009 13:35:55 by "java_re" with MS VC++ 7.1 (VS2003)I have the Java console open and after 10 seconds it closes and the applet becomes unresponsive. Usually when an applet crashes, some error messages show up in the console before it closes. That does not appear to happen in this case.
If I load a webpage with an applet (http://java.sun.com/applets/jdk/1.4/demo/applets/Fractal/example1.html) and then move to a non-applet webpage, and have the Java console up, it stays up (alive) for about a minute before it closes. In the case of my applet it closes much faster.
When I refresh, the second instance of the applet might be starting in the same process as the first process which is in the middle of closing (I am new to Java and JNI, so I might be using the wrong terminology). But with JRE 1.6.0.25 I was not seeing the crash on refresh. It manifested itself with the update to JRE 1.6.0.31
I did realize the codebase was wrong. This is what I have now:

JVM Crash With Oracle OCI Client
Hi
My app is running on Windows 7 64 bit, Jboss 4.2, launched from Eclipse, and runs fine when I use the Oracle thin client (10g, 32bit). However when I try to use the OCI client, I get this:
# A fatal error has been detected by the Java Runtime Environment:
# EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at pc=0x6d906f21, pid=4740, tid=5656
# JRE version: 6.0_21-b07
# Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (17.0-b17 interpreted mode windows-x86 )
# Problematic frame:
# V [jvm.dll+0x106f21]
I'll post the contents of the log in another message because it's too long to fit here. Using the thin client is NOT an option unfortunately as the thin driver is missing some functionality that we need to use.
I've installed the Oracle client in a folder that doesn't contain spaces, or parentheses (c:\oracle\.....) and the JDK is installed in a similar directory (c:\java\...)
I've tried both 32bit and 64 bit versions of JDK1.6 and the Oracle 10g client. I have also tried mixed mode and interpreted mode JVM (Xint) with the same results.
ojdbc14.jar is in my JBoss server's lib directory, and ocijdbc10.dll is in my path (c:\windows\system32).
Anyone any ideas what's going wrong? Been trying to fix this for days now. Appreciate any help.
RichardSorted it (well, my colleague did anyway). We installed a fresh version (32 bit) JDK (6u21), the Oracle 10g (10.0.3) client (32 bit) and made sure that there were no other OCI DLLs anywhere. I had some in the JBoss bin directory which I had copied in earlier that morning and forgotten about. So, the only OCI DLLs I have now are in Oracle's installation directory. Once we removed those erroneous DLLs from the JBoss directory, the server made the connection successfully. I don't full understand why, because I was getting the error earlier without the erroneous DLLs being present too, so I think there was some additional interaction going on somewhere. One other thing that may have been important is the tnsnames.ora file I had. We found a post that said the tnsnames file generated by the installer, when it only has one entry in it, can include dodgy whitespace at the end which can cause problems. So, just to be on the safe side we added a second entry (to another DB) - maybe that was something to do with it.
So, the Oracle 10g client and OCI driver DOES work on Windows 7 64 bit (at least for me anyway) -
I was looking at an x86 Solaris 8 Hardware Compatability list yesterday... Didn't book mark it... Now I cant find it anywhere Argh... Anybody have a url:// to it....

Compiling Invocation Programs ? Where to find javai.lib ??
Hello,
I'm having J2SE 1.4, VC++ 4.0. I'm trying to compile the invocation programs given in the Java Tutorial but I'm unable to compile since I've not found javai.lib in my J2SE folder. Can anyone help me on how to compile. Where to find javai.lib ??
Thanks
Wah Java!The javai.lib/dll have been replaced by jvm.lib/dll
since Java2 SDK 1.2. The javai.lib is in the "lib"
directory of your JDK installation. Note that the
invocation API has also changed, and you will probably
need to update the method calls. See the JNI spec at
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/docs/guide/jni/spec/jniTOC
doc.html.As you've said, I compiled the program and linked with jvm.lib but VC++ said that jvm.lib is incorrect file (or you can say corrupt file). Can you please help me how to compile with JVM.lib
Thanks in advance,
Ashish Shukla

Thread with static resources fails in Sun JVM. Why?
Hi All,
My applet uses threads to put locks on 2 static resources (a Hashtable and a Vector). It works smoothly in browsers with Microsoft JVM. When i changed browser plugin to Sun's JVM 1.3, the applet failed to run and following exceptions thrown to Java Console continuously:
java.lang.NullPointerException
at sun.awt.SunToolkit.postEvent(Unknown Source)
at sun.awt.windows.WComponentPeer.postEvent(Unknown Source)
at sun.awt.windows.WToolkit.eventLoop(Native Method)
at sun.awt.windows.WToolkit.run(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source) Here is the code:
Resource declaration:
public static Hashtable stateTable = new Hashtable();
public static Vector vtElementOrder = new Vector(); 2 methods to add/remove resource elements
private static void addElementHashTable(String ObjectName, ViewPanel viewPanel)
try
stateTable.put(ObjectName, viewPanel);
vtElementOrder.addElement(ObjectName);
catch(Exception _ex) { }
private static void removeElementHashTable(String s)
try
for(; stateTable.containsKey(s); stateTable.remove(s));
for(; vtElementOrder.contains(s); vtElementOrder.removeElement(s));
catch(Exception _ex) { }
}Main method for manipulation
private static synchronized void performHashTable(boolean flagInOut, String ObjectName, ViewPanel viewPanel)
if(flagInOut)
addElementHashTable(ObjectName, viewPanel);
else
removeElementHashTable(ObjectName);
}The performHashTable() method is called at init() and stop() events of the Applet.
Please note that if I remove "static" from all resources and methods above, the applet works smoothly.
Please let me know the reason and how to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

Ineed to get server that is memory intensive to run a java app. The recommendation from the application vender is at 512memo and 1cpu(500 or better) both requirements more than meet our immediate demand and future growth. My sun rep suggested a V20z. one or two 1.6 or 2.0 GHz CPUs running x86. I don't have any experience with x86 and would prefer sol9. Can the v20z run with sol9 efficiently and is the unit designed to perform well with Java and memory intensive. If not how different is the system administration from sol9 to x86.
Ineed to get server that is memory intensive to run a
java app. The recommendation from the application
vender is at 512memo and 1cpu(500 or better) both
requirements more than meet our immediate demand and
future growth. My sun rep suggested a V20z. one or

"Solaris 9" is Operating Environment software that can run on both x86 and SPARC hardware. Your choice isn't between Solaris 9 and x86, it's between SPARC and x86 - you can run Solaris 9 on both. -
Jvm crach when entering debug braekpoint
When I enable FastSwap and set a breakpoint the jvm crash when the breakpoint is hit.
I use Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse 11.1.1.5.0, Eclipse 3.5 Build id: 20100218-1602
I have tried the supplied Jrocket 1.6.0_14 jvm, the supplied JDK 1.6.0_14 and I have downloaded the latest jvm 1.6.0_19 and all fails.

I just discovered that I have to deploy in an exlpoded directory for this to work, I will try it tomorrow and see if it solves the problem....I have the same or similar issue.
I can attach to Weblogic. As soon as it reaches my breakpoint, my VM crashes.

How can I upgrade from FFOS 1.2 to 1.3 on ZTE Open (USA)?
The upgrade process from FFOS 1.2 to 1.3 changed from the previous ones (1.0 to 1.1 and 1.1 to 1.2). ZTE instead of making it easier on the Open, made it more convoluted and beyond my skills. 1.2 does not work well with my provider (no EDGE communica
