X86 diskless client's Ethernet interfaces not plumbed/configured
Hi,
My client's extra (non-primary) Ethernet interfaces aren't being configured even though I put entries for them in the client's sysidcfg file. Could someone please tell me if this indicates a problem in the sysidcfg file or something more insidious?
Thanks,
Dave
Hi,
It turns out that my sysidcfg file isn't being used by the client at all. That explains some things I'm seeing, but I'm not sure how to get the file to be used by the client. An entry is in both the bootparams file and the SsysidCF DHCP macro. I tried a sys-unconfig on the diskless client, but it turns out that it can't be used on a diskless client.
Something more fundamental is amiss...
Thanks,
Dave

I have installed the agent 10 or 15 times and one installation has failed, no error appeared during the installation but I am having inconsistent issues with my ethernet card not working here and there. We rebooted and can log into Novell client but the login prompt did not appear for ESM client or the icon was not in the systray. Everything seems to work, besides at times (a couple times today) it terminates his ethernet card/connection. I would re-image his computer but he has several applications and it would take several hours, so I am hoping someone has an idea to fix this issue. So I was trying to figure out why he did not get the prompt to login and why it's not in the systray and it appears to not have completed the install? I checked the add/remove programs, its not listed within their, I also checked the registry and found nothing for endpoint within their, but the files are within c:\program files\novell\zenworks endpoint security.
I have also tried uninstalling it but that fails due to it "not being installed", and it will not reinstall over itself either.
I did notice that stuninstdrv.exe is running in task manager. Any help would be great...

Thanks,
AndyIf you are searching the registry, check for the "Senforce" string. It should be at HKLM\Software\Senforce
Try running the install program for the ZSC with the following command line:
setup.exe /V"STUNINSTALL=1"
If you've specified an uninstall password, try this one instead:
setup.exe /V"STUNINSTALL=1 STUIP=password"" (please note the double quote at the end)
Let me know if that helped you.

Ethernet does not show up in list of interfaces
Hello, we have a customer with an iMac and they are having issues with the wired connection on it. Occasionally, it will just say "disconnected" when they go to system preferences, network. I had her remove the connection but when she goes to readd it, "Ethernet" is not in the list of interfaces. I did the same steps on our Mac Mini and it indeed was a choice. They have used wired networks in the past. The local Mac cafe has fixed this previously by resetting a preference file, how would this be done? I researched the issue but wanted to be sure, and be able to tell them for sure whether this would clear their wifi settings or not.
If there are no other LR’s installed on your computer, and you have logged out of CC Desktop and rebooted, then LR5 CC should be available in your CC Desktop apps list and available at https://creative.adobe.com/products
No LR that you install from the cloud will ask for a serial number so if a LR is, then it is the trial from www.adobe.com <http://www.adobe.com> and that needs to be uninstalled. If need be, installed the non-CC version, again, then uninstall it, just to make sure it’s uninstalled properly. -
S10 x86, 3com pcmcia 3c589 can not plumb.
I use 3com pcmcia 3c589c, it's can not plumb by s10_x86 also:

pci1509,2980, instance #0 (driver name: hci1394)
#man pcelx
Identifying an Unrecognized Card
If you insert a 3C589 card and it is not recognized (no spe-
cial files created), use the prtconf command and attempt to
identify the problem:
1. Become root.
2. Run the prtconf -D command to see if your 3C589 card is
recognized. A recognized device will appear in the
prtconf output. For example:
# prtconf -D
pcic, instance #0 (driver name: pcic)
network, instance #0 (driver name: pcelx)
3. If pcelx does not appear in the prtconf output, there is
a problem with the PC Card adapter configuration or with
the hardware. You can determine whether the problem is
with the card or the adapter by attempting to use the
card on another machine or by using it on the same
machine using DOS.
The 3c589c can be using on the same laptop using win2000/redhat.

Xi Graphics PCMCIA patch
Additional PC Card (PCMCIA) adapter support for Solaris 6, 7 and 8 x86. This package tries to work around a problem in the Solaris bus enumerator boot code. While it detects that a PCMCIA bridge is present, it does not properly initialize the bridge, and therefore it is not available when the system boots. What this package does is to force the bridge into an ISA only mode so that the bridge is usable after boot. Of course this means that CardBus cards cannot be used with this package. This package does not provide support for any of the Solaris Card specific drivers, so if your card is not on the Solaris HCL, it still will not work with this patch. -
Mac OS X Server v10.7 does not show the ethernet link aggregated interface i created. Does Lion server support ethernet link aggregated interfaces?
Thanks for responding Cold--
Hardware: Mac Pro 3.0 GHZ quad core xeon
I read the link but it still does not explain why the aggregated dual ethernet interface does not show up in the Network tab of the hardware section Lion Server. I was able to see it on the network and looks to be using a single static IP that I assigned. My concern was that is this supported and will it allow for failover and double performance of the single network interface.
Any thoughts?

Ethernet interface problems...
I'm having some problems with a Solaris 8 on x86 server not seeing its ethernet interface between reboots without reconfiguring every time.
About two weeks ago, a backup script on my main file sever spontaneously appeared to crash NIS, and the box was rebooted. When it came back up, it appeared to have forgotten about its ethernet interface, an Intel GigE card at e1000g0. The error message at boot is:
"Protocol wrong type for socket"
... followed by the attempt to move the IP from e1000g0 to any other active interface, which of course failed, since it's the only interface in the box.
I've found that the only way to get the interface up is to boot -rs so it forces a reconfiguration and then drops into single-user mode. Then I can plumb the interface and number it by hand. I can then init 3 and everything is fine. If I don't boot into single user mode, it tries to start NIS, fails, and the box hangs.
If I reboot at this point, the box fails detect the interface again and I have to go through the whole process once more.
I've tried at least one other Intel GigE card, as well as moving them between PCI slots to no avail. I've removed the driver and added it back in, same thing.
Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem? I'm completely stumped.
I'm not sure if it's pertinent, but the when I run my backup script and it crashes NIS, I get the following errors in /var/adm messages.
Aug 10 15:27:10 myserver smbd[23184]: [ID 105279 user.error] nis_cast: t_open: /dev/udp:No such device or address
Aug 10 15:27:10 myserver smbd[23176]: [ID 566193 user.error] n2a get_local_info: ioctl (get interface flags): No such device or address
This is what happened to cause the reboot in the first place, after which the interface failed to show up. I'm not sure if it's important, but I figured I'd include it anyway.
Thanks for any help!
FranklinI'll check that in just a bit. On the other hand I noticed that by PXE OPROM in the mobo settings the Intel boot agent started from the beginning and not just when rebooting, however, it didn't solve the issue. My new guess is that the issue is not IBA related.
I'm not completely sure if it is an eth0 vs eth1 issue, as loading Xubuntu (which automatically connects to the networks) doesn't solve it. If I reboot it automatically connects to the wired network, if turning on for the first time it shows a "no wired network available" ,and instead offers to connect to the available wireless networks.
I used to have the first firmware (probably dating back to february or march) but updated to a more recent one and yesterday got the most recent firmware available through Asus, but the issue persisted. -
Stuck for 2 weeks on diskless client
I have signed up with 5 different forums. None of them seemed active. I haven't gotten a single answer. I'm going to try to explain as best as I can what my problem is. I am new to linux and I am using Solaris 10 (newest update).
I am attempting to make a diskless client. Here are the settings:
ultramain: this is the OS server (Ultra 60). Everything is set correctly. I have checked ethers, hosts, and all other files relating to diskless booting.
ip: 120.3.2.250
broadcast: 120.3.2.255
netmask: 255.255.255.0
sf3800-up: this is the system controller of the client
ip: 120.3.2.41
gateway: 120.3.2.250
netmask: 255.255.255.0
the client is a sun fire 3800.
It is called sf3800-a in the /etc/hosts file.
The mac address is right in the ethers file.
I am attempting to boot up sf3800-a through telnet.
I have a hub. One ethernet cable goes from ultaserver to the hub, an other from the system controller to the hub, and an other one from sf3800-a to the hub.
I telnet the system controller fine. I access the console and run show-nets.
I proceed to boot. It finds the ip address fine. Cursor rotates for a while and it just stops. Cursor becomes blank and just flashes. I have snooped from the OS server. Everything loads up fine at first. All tftp data blocks load up fine. Then the client tries to get an ip for the OS server and finds it okay. It freezes on this line:
"sf3800-a -> ultraserver SYSLOG R port=32801".
After around 30 mins it goes through 2 more lines in snoop:
"120.3.2.41 -> ultraserver Telnet R port=32817 Using RARP/BOOTPARAMS"
"ultraserver -> 120.3.2.41 Telnet C port=32817".
I also tried to verbose the boot.
It freezes here:
"Found 120.3.2.250 @ 8:0:20:c3:a7:65"
I also have used in.rarp in debug mode. It finds the addresses find.
Now here's the real puzzling thing. I can get out of this hang mode by pinging the client (120.3.2.50) from the ultraserver. Right after that, the cursor starts spinning again and everything boots up fine.
WTF is the problem? I've searched to no ends. I reinstalled Solaris many times from different ISO's. I have switched the ethernet cables. I have changed memory. Changed hubs. Checked every files. Re-done smosservice + smdiskless. Stopped and restarted the daemon services over and over again.
I just started with this. I have never used Solaris. Only windows. I know I'm missing something really easy. I was thinking that the addresses are maybe not setup right? I also don't have a defaultrouter address in /etc. I doubt that could cause a problem.
Please, I beg you. Help me. Help a out.
PS:
I have left the system while it was hung over night. This morning, it did load up. Is there a way to diagnose which file it is getting stuck on?I think that the situation is different, depending on whether your broadband was supplied via cable, or a separate phone line. I believe that some parts of the cable network are still analogue, so a separate copper pair is needed for phone and broadband.
In the latter case, then a MAC code would be needed, for BT to release the "tag" on the line.
It should not be needed on a cable service, if the phone and broadband come down the cable, as BT have no involvement.
If you are in that category, then you should have specified that you did not have a BT phone line, or broadband. You would not have needed a MAC code.
What category were you in?
There are some useful help pages here, for BT Broadband customers only, on my personal website.

How to create a virtual ethernet interface in arch ?
I have subscribed to a distant VPN service. My computer acts as a VPN client and creates a new interface tun0 each time the VPN is active.
I want to only route the ip traffic from Transmission through VPN
I tried to follow the tutorial from here (sorry it's in french) but this tutorial is for debian-based distribs.
Since the VPN may have a dynamic IP, this tutorial proposes to create a 2nd virtual ethernet interface with a fixed IP adress. iptable is then used to perform NAT translation between the IP of this 2nd virtual ethernet interface and tun0.
With debian-based distributions, the creation the this new virtual ethernet interface is managed by adding the following lines to the file /etc/network/interfaces :
# The secondary loopback network interface
auto lo:1
iface lo:1 inet static
address 192.168.0.1
netmask 255.255.255.255
I'm not sure how to perform this in arch. I read a lot about the ip command and I think that the solution may be something like that :
ip tuntap add dev lo1 mode tap
but I'm not sure and moreover, I don't know how to give a fixed IP adress (i.e. 192.168.0.1) to this new interface
Any help would be really appreciated.It's just a wild guess, but maybe https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd-networkd would help?

[SOLVED] Bring up ethernet interface without connection
I have two ethernet interfaces in my computer. eth0 connects to the router for the internet, I'm not concerned about that. eth1 I use sometimes to plug a laptop into, and sometimes a MS Windows games PC. Most of the time I don't use it, and there's nothing plugged into it.
I have
NETWORKS=(eth0 eth1)
in rc.conf, and this in /etc/network.d/eth1:
CONNECTION='ethernet'
DESCRIPTION='Internal network'
INTERFACE='eth1'
IP='static'
ADDR='192.168.1.1'
At first boot, there's usually nothing plugged in to eth1, so the 'eth1' profile fails to start:
> sudo netcfg eth1
:: eth1 up [BUSY] > No connection
[FAIL]
> ip addr show eth1
3: eth1: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state DOWN qlen 1000
link/ether 00:1b:ee:00:fe:d6 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
Why won't it start up eth1? I want it to give eth1 the IP of 192.168.1.1, even though there's no cable in it. This causes a problem when, after starting the main PC, I plug in a cable to eth1 and start a device (eg. laptop). I have to plug it in, start up the device (which is set to get a DHCP IP from my computer), manually start up eth1 on the PC, then rerun the connect command from the device.

Diskless client differentiation
If I have several diskless clients, and I want to separate, say, which init.d scripts I want to run on any given machine is there a quick way I can start/stop scripts per machine. I want to run these scripts on these machines, but not those. I don't think I need a totally different installation from scratch to do that. I'm sure this is probably easy, but probably not used all that much. It could also be parsed from the kernel command line (possibly?) from an entry in the pxelinux.cfg that way to point each diskless client/group to use its' own rc.conf file? I want to be able to turn on certain machines to do certain tasks, but still be able to use the diskless for troubleshooting a sick machine in lieu of a live CD (since it would be quicker).
If there's a quick way to grab the MAC address by script or by writing a small C program, that will probably do it. I'm thinking that sed might also be a possibility.
I could start each machine with a minimal common init scripts in rc.conf and then login via SSH and start the different services on the designated machines, but I know there has to be a way to automate this process.
Last edited by nomorewindows (2012-01-30 17:09:03)I searched around and found the following:
/sbin/ifconfig \
| grep 'eth0' \
| tr -s ' ' \
| cut -d ' ' -f5
the result it came up with was 'metric' which is another part of it, so I modified it to (shows all MAC):
ifconfig | grep "ether" | cut -b 15-31
Apparently this also works for a specific interface:
cat /sys/class/net/eth0/address
Now I just need to place it in my script with a conditional command to get it to execute based on the comparison.

Internet Connection sharing AirPort over Ethernet - DHCP not starting
I am trying to share my internet connectoin form my PB17 with OSX 10.4.5. The problem is the ethernet interface is not getting set to 192.168.2.1 when I start the sharing. Also, the client I have connected to the ethernet port is not getting an IP address (yes, is is set to automatically recevice an IP). This is leading me to believe the DHCP server is not starting on the PB.
Internet sharing is enabled
Personal Web sharing enabled
Both enabled in the Firewall settings
The ethernet port is set to DHCP (but I'm assuming that once I turn on sharing it should assign itself an IP address correct?)
CLient set to automatically get an address
Any ideas?Disregard the msg above. Below is the text I need help with, for some reason I kept getting a message saying I could not edit the above post...

Scientific Atlanta EMTA DPC2425 MIBs - to reset ethernet interfaces.
Hi,
I need to get the correct MIB to reset the physical ethernet ports of the EMTA model DPC2425.
I have tried the standard OID 1.3.6.1.2.1.69.1.1.3.0 that works on others DPC versions but with the DPC2425 "switch embeded" does not work. Also I tried this tow OIDs
1.3.6.1.4.1.1429.77.1.3.15
1.3.6.1.4.1.1429.77.1.3.17
We need that the Ethernet Interfaces shutdown and power On after applying the correct OID. The idea is that the CPE behind the EMTA detects a link "failure" or down to refresh the DNS cache. This is for use a captive portal seved to clients.
We have applied this SNMP instruction with the default MIB
[root@optimus ~]# snmpset -v 2c -c private 10.55.26.243 .1.3.6.1.2.1.69.1.1.3.0 i 1
SNMPv2-SMI::mib-2.69.1.1.3.0 = INTEGER: 1
The result is a logical reset of the ethernet interfaces, but not Physical "This mean there`s not a LINKUP - LINKDOWN". The PC behind the EMTA only detects that the default gateway is not answering.
I appreciate your help.Unplugging the power to the cable modem for 30seconds should be good enough. As for the router, you should be able to get by without a reset if it is set to DHCP for the internet connection type.
I don't work for Cisco. I'm just here to help. -
Setup more than one ethernet interface
Hi,
On a 10.5.2 server, I have 4 ethernet ports, 2 on Lan and 2 on Wan with public IP.
What I am suposed to do first :
1- Setup 1 lan interface, DNS, others interfaces an d thne services
2- Setup 4 interfces, Dns, Services
3- Other
Services planned on that Xserve : DNS, OD, Ical, VPN, MAil, Web.
Thank's four your help
Eric SudanThank's for your response servantofserver,
I'll have an internal DSN, so I'am not sure of one thing :
What ethernet interface is suposed to be the "primary" ?
One of the lan, or one of the wan ?
Can it be changed later, changing the order by drag and drop ?, need to use changeip ?
Thank's

Netctl: Using same ethernet interface for PPPoE and LAN
Configuration overview
One ethernet interface connected to a switch which has both the LAN and my ADSL router (running in bridge mode).
My Arch PC should connect via PPPoE (possibly multiple connections) to the ISP and be able to access the LAN simultaniously. (Connection sharing is another goal, but that is not yet relevant...)
The main reason for not changing the setup is that some other people on the LAN use their own ISP accounts over the same line.
I currently have two netctl profiles, adsl (PPPoE) and ethernet (LAN).
I also want the ability to run two PPPoE sessions simultaniously (with routing to determine which data uses which connection). (This is not currently relevant, but have been in the past and might be again in the future...)
The problem:
I'm unable to connect to both the ethernet and ADSL profiles simultaniosly.
I tried to switch to Network manager, but it has a known bug preventing the same interface from being used for both plain LAN and PPPoE.
The workaround that currently seem to work, is to use ifconfig to manually add an IPv4 address to the ethernet interface after connecting the PPPoE session.
The systax for a PPP profile also have the unusual feature that its "Interface" value refers to the underlying interface, rather than the created PPP interface.
I currently have it working on my Ubuntu HDD and previusly had it working on Gentoo.
(Under a standard Windows XP / 7, it works with a single connection, but multiple simultanious PPPoE connections require soem non-standard tools...)
The Ubuntu setup
eth0 is set up by NetworkManager (I didn't have the option to avoid that one...) and I have the PPPoE connections configured in my /etc/interfaces: (ppp0 is not currently in use, was previously)
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
iface ppp0 inet ppp
pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up # line maintained by pppoeconf
provider dsl-provider-local
auto ppp1
iface ppp1 inet ppp
pre-up /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up # line maintained by pppoeconf
provider dsl-provider-intl
I then have these files under /etc/ppp/peers: (with the name mathing the "provider" line) An example below. (passwords are in the /etc/ppp/*-secrets files)
unit 0 # This specifies that the created connection uses ppp0, differs in others.
noipdefault
hide-password
noauth
persist
plugin rp-pppoe.so eth0
user "myuser@radius-domain"
Arch setup:
ADSL profile:
Description='ISPName'
Interface=enp4s0
Connection=pppoe
User='username@radius-server'
Password='mysecret'
ConnectionMode='persist'
#UsePeerDNS=true
# Override default LCP parameters from /etc/ppp/options
LCPEchoInterval=15
LCPEchoFailure=10
Ethernet profile:
Description='A basic static ethernet connection'
Interface=enp4s0
Connection=ethernet
IP=static
Address=('192.168.0.8/24')
Solutions / Workarounds
1. Manually configuring a IP after connecting PPPoE
2. Not using netctl for pppoe, rather using the pppoe-setup tool
3, Figuring out the correct netctl setup for this scenario - which is what I need your help for...

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=163956
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sh … Connection - Insists that an extra interface is needed for sharing connections - which is not a fundemental Linux requirementI used to use ubuntu & if you reboot into it (if you can) & run:
$ ifconfig
you will see eth0 & ppp1
ppp1 will be set as the default gateway.
Your issue in Arch is that you currently want the PPPoE interface to be the same as your LAN, this will not work at best you will need to bridge the 2 BUT I think what you should do is use the networkmanager profile as a guide & have netctl create an adsl interface called ppp1 & set that as the default gateway
thus:
Description='ISPName'
Interface=ppp1
Connection=pppoe
User='username@radius-server'
Password='mysecret'
ConnectionMode='persist'
#UsePeerDNS=true
# Override default LCP parameters from /etc/ppp/options
LCPEchoInterval=15
LCPEchoFailure=10
I think this will work, try it & good luck
PS:
I do not use netctl as I use dhcp but you might even be able to configure netctl to set ppp1 as default gateway as a "post-up" command OR just create a systemd service to do it after the relevant netctl services are up

Hi All,
I am facing the below error while installing Oracle RAC in Silent Mode.
SEVERE: There are no common subnets represented by network interfaces across all cluster nodes.
SEVERE: [FATAL] [INS-40925] One or more nodes have interfaces not configured with a subnet that is common across all cluster nodes.
CAUSE: Not all nodes have network interfaces that are configured on subnets that are common to all nodes in the cluster.
ACTION: Ensure all cluster nodes have a public interface defined with the same subnet accessible by all nodes in the cluster.
My /etc/hosts is given below.
