X86 Install failure on Dell Laptop

I'm quite familiar with Solaris 8 and have done numerous installs
including dual boot on x86, and jumpstarts on Ultras.
I am trying to install x86 on a Dell CPX H500gt laptop. 5 gigs space, 256 mb ram. Plenty of resources. No problems with setting up
the bios, and telling it to boot into the Solaris install menu. (from 1
of 2 cd)
My problem is this:
When I get to the language preference question, my keyboard mapping is
shot. I've tried numlock off and on, and used 3 different keyboards.
Laptop keyboard out of docking station, and two different keyboards
while the Dell is docked.
Funny thing is, the mapping is fine until the point where the install
program wants language preferences entered. I tried various keys and the
whole mapping of the keys on the board is off.
As I mentioned, in the earlier phase of the install program, when it
asks if you want Jumpstart, the mapping is fine. I did not have this
problem on my x86 install on my tower, (same keyboard tested as bad on
the Dell) and used the exact same cd's (1 of 2) that sun sent.
So I tried to configure Jumpstart to get around the mapping. Booted the
Dell bios to boot from the network using BOOTP, which is the core
protocol that Jumpstart uses. No go. Used the procedure from the Sun
Admin 2 class, it is proven to work on an Ultra environment. No go on
x86 though.
Any suggestions?
Thanks much,
Sam

This is a known issue with hotplugging. There are 2 choices you have
1) Install xf86-input-evdev and hal and dbus (if you haven't already)
2) Disable hotpluggin completely.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
    Check for .dll files
    Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
    If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
    Reboot your computer.
    Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
    Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
    Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
    Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.

    I recently tried to upgrade my itunes on my dell laptop with 64 bit windows 7. It stopped working so I deleted all files and tried to reinstall and haven't been able to since. I've tried numerous things i've read in forums and nothing seems to work. The installation will not move past the "publishing product information" point. After being stuck there for a while this error message appears:
    An error occurred during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT,version="8.0.50727.4053",type="win32",publicKeyToken="1fc8b 3b9a1e18e3b",process or Architecture="x86"', Please refer to Help and Support for more information. HRESULT: 0x800736FD
    I hope someone is able to help me with this.

    Did you already try what bnoir suggested in this post about error 0x800736FD:
    These ones are typically caused by underlying problems on the PC that also often cause Windows Updates to fail to install. If we can fix the Windows Update trouble, we can usually get the iTunes trouble cleaned up en passant.
    Go into your Windows update and try to check for new updates. If updates install, stock up on the ones you're behind on, restarting the PC if requested to do so. After the restart, try installing iTunes again. Does it go through this time for you?
    If windows updates fail to install, go into your Update History and doubleclick the failures. What alphanumeric codes appear for you? Are they also 800736FD, or some other number? (If they're another number, what number are you getting?
    This thread might help as well, suggestion provided by bnoir:
    In general, these ones tend to be caused by underlying problems on the PC that can prevent Windows Updates from installing. So my main strategy with them is to try to fix the Windows Update issues. If we can get Windows Updates flowing again, that generally clears up the iTunes install errors +en passant.+
    Head into your Windows Update, and check for any new updates. Do any fail? If so, open your Update History and doubleclick on the failure entries to bring up a small box with alphanumeric error message codes. Are you getting 8000FFFFs? (They often seem to be associated with an iTunes-install 0x800736FD.)
    If you're getting 8000FFFFs, try the following Microsoft document:
    [Windows Update Error 8000FFFF|http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Windows-Update-Error- 8000FFFF]
    Head back to Windows Update, and stock up on any updates you're behind on. Once you're completely up to date in that regard, try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

    Hi Nitro,
    Tried your advise but that too failed. Problem still continues. Again that same error  "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor".
    Please advise.

  • TS1717 Having trouble running iTunes version 11.0.2 on a Dell Laptop running Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1.  Keep getting an error message "the software required for communicating with iPods and mobile phones was not installed correctly..." reinst

    Having trouble when I launch iTunes (version 11.0.2) on my Dell Laptop running Windows 7 Professional (service pack 1).  I get an error message indicating software required to communicate with iPod and mobile phones was not installed correctly.  Do you want iTunes to try to repair this for you?  I normally respond with OK and it immediately tells me "could not be repaired.  Please reinstall iTunes..."  I have done this a number of times to no avail.

    I also notice Quicktime is not getting installed at all.
    That one is normal nowadays (ever since the iTunes versions 10.5.x).
    The software required for communicating with iPods and mobile phones was not installed correctly. Do you want iTunes to try to repair this for you?
    Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
    Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
    Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
    Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
    (If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
    Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you?
    If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • HT1349 I tried to install an itunes update yesterday on my Dell Laptop.  I kept getting an error message.  Now it says I need to reinstall itunes on my computer.  Will I lose all of my music and how do I go about doing this?

    I tried to install an itunes update yesterday on my Dell Laptop.  I kept getting an error message.  Now I cannot access itunes and it says I need to reinstall itunes.  Will I lose all of my music?

    Installing, and uninstalling, applications never touches or removes the data.
    Clean out and uninstall all the apple programs and software thru Programs and manually.
    Might want to use Revo and CCleaner
    I always use manual standalone installers (and keep a couple backup versions)
    itunes 10.5 may affect iTunes media playlists, not sure, depends on what you have.
    A search of these forums will show some threads.
    I'd clean up vista, you need SP2 or later, and specific error message?
    I wonder as you arenot the first with a dell if maybe the OS or included software.
    Security programs like Norton and older versions of Kaspersky have been implicated.
    Also settings in IE that affect pop-ups and plug-ins.

  • Oracle Install on Mandrake Linux 9.1 (Dell Laptop 600)

    I have a full install of Oracle 10G running on a Dell Laptop using Mandrake Linux 9.1:
    First I did an install of the OS, I built the swap file to be 2GIGs, the /oracle partition as 5GIGS and the /home partition as 25GIGS.
    I made sure to choose the Development packages and the Office packages, I did not choose any of the WEB and other stuff.
    As root, edit the file /etc/sysctl.conf. Add the following lines to the end of the file:
    kernel.shmall = 2097152
    kernel.shmmax = 2147483648
    kernel.shmmni = 4096
    kernel.sem = 250 32000 100 128
    fs.file-max = 65536
    net.ipv4.ip_local_port_range = 1024 65000
    As root, issue the following commands at a terminal:
    groupadd oinstall
    groupadd dba
    useradd –g oinstall –G dba oracle
    passwd oracle <supply new password>
    You then need to set up the new user’s environment variables. Edit the file /home/oracle/.bashrc and add the following between the “# User specific aliases and functions” and the “# Source global definitions” lines. In Mandrake Linux all I did was edit the /etc/profile file and add the below at the end. This way all users get the added. Works like a charm.
    ORACLE_SID=lx10g
    ORACLE_BASE=/oracle
    ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/10g
    PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/bin:$PATH:.
    export ORACLE_SID ORACLE_BASE ORACLE_HOME PATH
    You can choose what you like for the ORACLE_SID: it represents what you will eventually call your database.
    Make install directories, In my case, for example, I did this:
    mkdir /oracle
    mkdir /oracle/10g
    chown -R oracle:oinstall /oracle
    First when you try to run the Universal Installer do the following:
    ./runInstaller -ignoreSysPrereqs (this gets you by the error on the OS)
    Then just follow the normal screens and at the end you should have a complete system. There is a bug in the installer and you will need to re-run the ./runInstaller and selct just the ISQLPlus* and it will then only re-install this package. It seems it misses it during the initial install. I also suggest downloading the Compaign CD and installing the APACHE and HTMDB using the same as above when running the ./runInstaller as everything else is already setup.

    Remember that the OS has to be certified to install

  • Solaris on x86 Dell Laptop - keyboard driver!

    Hello,
    As some of you may have a Dell Laptop I am asking if anyone has
    had any success installing Solaris 8 for Intel. If you have please
    drop me a line.
    So far I have worked my way past the hangs during the install's
    configuration of /dev. I had to remove all references to cardbus in
    the "Edit Device" settings of the device configuration assistant.
    But then I hit the second problem where the first keypress at the
    language selection window sends repeating characters until the keyboard
    buffer is full. In other words it goes nuts because the Solaris driver
    does not support the Dell Latitude CPi laptop keyboard. I know it is
    not a supported configuration but I have little option since Sun are
    no longer interested in supporting laptops in Solaris 8.
    I already know there is a USB keyboard workaround but I dont
    fancy myself hauling around a seperate keyboard just so I can use
    Solaris 8.
    More specificallly I am looking for driver settings to make the
    existing keyboard driver work or an alternative keyboard driver to solve the
    issue. Sun can you help out here?
    Any suggestions appreciated, especially some input from Sun.

    Hi knightweb,
    Did you checked the BigAdmin center to know if your box is compatible / known to work ?
    The installation program says your drive is RO ? Are you installing from a CD ? If yes, be sure that the disk choosed to the installation is not the CD drive (I don't know Dell 6350 anyway)
    Did you tried to broke the last partition if there's one with fdisk ?

  • Can't install iTunes on new Dell laptop

    I bought a Dell laptop running Windows 7. I can download but not install iTunes. I have tried turning off the pop-up blocker and suspending Norton Antivirus' firewall. Any suggestions? I can't access my full iTunes account that shows previous purchases. And when I plug in my iPod Touch and my new iPad, the computer recognizes them but nothing happens with the iTunes website.

    many thanks.
    Are you using Internet Explorer for the download?
    If so, fingers crossed the following documents might be of some assistance:
    How to download iTunes when Internet Explorer information bar appears
    iTunes: Downloading iTunes for Windows using Internet Explorer
    If no joy there, try switching off any pop-up blockers or web accelerators you may have running. (They can also interfere with downloads in this sort of way.)

Apple Store Geniuses helped me determine that it wasn't my iPad causing the problem, but were less helpful when it came to dealing with non-Apple devices.
    Options?

    Does the OS see the iPad at all? In other words does it show up in either the My Computer or Device Manager?
    I've had problems in the past where I had to modify the registry to get my son's iPod to sync with a particular HP laptop.
    If it doesn't show up at all have your tried using an external hub (with or without power)?
