X86 install problems: using rpc boot params

help! during install on an intel box, install always hangs at the same spot: "configuring /dev and /devices" then: "Using RPC Bootprams for network configuration information." and it never gets any further... after reading some of the other threads, i tried booting off cd 1 of solaris 8 software and when i do that it, after the rpc bootparams message i get: "Skipping interface elx10" and it hangs there... any ideas? any help is very much appreciated

i'm not entirely convinced the problem isn't with the bootable floppy, but when i try to make an image using dd.exe i type: "dd S28DCA0600.3 a:" and get: "S28DCA0600.3: No such file or directory" so then i tried downloading the other image file and get the same thing except with the new image file's name ("S28DCA_FCS.3"), and no, i don't know which image i should be using or why...

Problems using PXE boot to jumpstart an HP client

Hello folks,
I have a Sparc jumpstart server that I am trying to use to jumpstart an HP with Solaris x86. I have gotten the x86 installation stuff installed by mounting the DVD on an x86 system and NFS exporting it to the jumpstart server. This seemed to work just fine.
My problem is PXE boot and DHCP. I have exported the appropriate directories, I have set up the DHCP service, and I can see on the client machine's console that it receives its IP address, but then I get the message "No filename or root path specified." I have a macro defined that points to the pxegrub file, and everything seems to be set up correctly. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I am missing?

Well, we managed to solve the problem with DHCP and PXE boot on the HP Proliant, at least the problem I first posted above. We have run into another problem. Apparently, the problem we had was twofold. First there is some sort of bug in the HP that if there is an LOM on the system you can't use the first network interface to PXE boot, it produces the error message about not finding the filename or root path. So the solution to that was to switch to the second network interface and change the DHCP server to answer that MAC address.
Making changes to the DHCP config on the Solaris jumpstart server somehow made it stop serving IP addresses to the client. As a last ditch attempt we shut down DHCP with the svcadm command and restarted it. This fixed that problem and now the PXE boot finds the pxegrub files and the installation starts up.
Now there is a new problem. We want to do a hands-off jumpstart, but the system pops up an X window and asks for keyboard type and some network and timezone info, and a root password. Then the install seems to proceed to use the profiles listed in the rules.ok file on the jumpstart server. So it does seem to be getting some config options from the jumpstart server, but not enough to be completly hands-off. Is there something we can add to the rules file or beginning script or something to fix this? Anyone have experience or even just a good guess?

Solaris 10 x86 install problems allocating resources

I have a problem when I first install. I get two devices, NON ACPI and ACPI both using IRQ 3. After the conflict resolves, during some page instances of the boot configuration assistant, I lose my keyboard functionality.
This is currently set to IRQ 1. I was wondering if this was correct based on x86 platform specific resources. I am also unsure as to what port I need to use.
Has anyone ever tried anything different other than IRQ 1?
AMD K6 400 w/ adaptec 2940 UW / 2 x 9.1 GB scsi Quantum 7200 rpm 56x ide cdrom and 192 mb memory SDRAM
Even if I switch my pci config around physically, that still won't help the keyboard probing or will it? Can I shut off probing and do it manually? Then again, I lose the keyboard sometimes during the boot config.

I think u should do one thing.
1) Find out your name of your NIC card. ( Probably if u installed XP and seen which NIC is that)
2) Download drivers for your NIC by giving something like " download network drivers for solaris for ' your NIC' ".
3) If fortunately if u get drivers, copy it on ur solaris machine and install it by reading readme file of the drivers.
4) In readme file u will also find NIC name.
5) Then run command " ifconfig (card name e.g. bcme0) plumb
6) Now run "ifconfig -a" if u find ur card name there except le0 then congrats u have done it.
7) Move ahead with network config.
Note : - I am not sure but i think if ur machine is old then u will not get drivers for it.

Tiger/Panther install problems - won't boot from Tiger DVD or Panther CD

My Mum has an iMac G3 CRT, running at 500MHz, with 1GB RAM, a 20GB HD, & a slot-loading internal CD-RW.

She only uses the machine for email & web browsing, but because it runs OS 9, it won't run a modern web browser (it's stuck on Internet Explorer 5.1.7) so lots of websites don't load properly or work at all. This is fair enough as IE for the Mac hasn't been updated since 2001.
My idea was to upgrade the machine from OS 9.2.2 to (ideally) 10.4.11, or failing that, 10.3.9, which would then let her use the current version of Safari, or possibly even Firefox. (Any thoughts on which would be easier for a currently IE-using technically-challenged pensioner would be welcome, although I prefer Safari myself, despite its shortcomings).
The iMac only had it's original 128MB of RAM until recently, but I persuaded her that it would be a good idea to spend 70-odd Pounds on 1GB of RAM so that OS X could not only be installed (which would let a modern browser be used) but would run at a useable speed. The minimum requirement for Panther is 128MB of RAM, but I suspected that it would run like treacle on a 128MB G3, and I was hoping to go for Tiger anyway, which requires 256MB.
As Tiger comes on a DVD (I have the retail/generic version) and the iMac has no DVD drive, I borrowed a friends external LaCie FireWire DVD-RW drive (the Porsche styled one). The DVD mounted first time, and the Startup Disk control panel let me select it.
When I restarted, I got the initial OS X pale grey screen with the dark grey Apple logo in the centre, with the spinning circle thing below, but after a minute or so, I could hear the DVD stop spinning in the drive, and a few seconds later the dark grey Apple logo changed into a dark grey "circle with a line through it" logo, with the normal circle thing still spinning below. This is how things stayed for many minutes, so I just restarted with the external drive off, and eventually got back to a normal 9.2.2 boot-up.
Next I tried running the "Mac OS X Install" application on the Tiger DVD from within 9.2.2. This started and came up with a big Tiger logo screen with a button labelled "Restart". Clicking it brought up an OS 9 error dialogue though, which said something along the lines of "the Tiger DVD cannot be selected as the startup disk" with a number 2 in brackets at the end of the error message - like this: (2)
This error occurs both if I select the Tiger DVD in the Startup Disk control panel prior to running the "Mac OS X Install" application, or if I select the internal hard disk. I know the DVD isn't faulty, as I used it to successfully boot my own Mac (a Power Mac G4 Mirror Drive Doors) just the other day, in order to repair permissions on the startup disk.
At this point I gave up on Tiger and tried to use the first of 3 Panther CDs that I have. These 3 CDs are burnt copies that came with my own Mac and contain version 10.3.2.
The CD refused to be selectable in the Startup Disk control panel. It's icon was greyed out, and so I couldn't boot from it. I tried running the "Install Mac OS X" application on the CD from within OS 9, but got the same error with the 2 in brackets when I clicked the "Restart" button, just like with the Tiger DVD.
Initially, I suspected that these Panther discs might be machine-specific, rather than the retail/generic version, because of the first CD being greyed-out in the Startup Disk control panel, but then the error dialogue that matched the one I got when I tried the Tiger DVD makes me think that my Panther CDs might be generic after all. Examining the first CD on my own Mac, it appears to be generic, but I'm not 100% sure, as the CDs are copies and as such don't have the usual identifying information on the labels. There are no machine-specific files that I can find on the first CD, which is dated January 9th 2004.
Various websites mention that when Tiger was current, Apple would swap a retail copy of the DVD for a set of CDs. I've looked on eBay but not been able to find any. This doesn't surprise me though, as there will be very few copies of Tiger on CD out there, and even fewer copies that people would want to sell.
There are a few retail copies of Panther available on CD, but if my current burnt copies of these discs are in fact generic, then buying a new set would make no difference. Besides, I'd prefer to use Tiger.
The Tiger minimum requirements (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1514) say:
"To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs: DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation"
What it doesn't say though, is whether the DVD drive has to be an internal one with Apple firmware/modifications, or whether an external 3rd party one will do. However, I know from various websites that it's possible to load Tiger onto this sort of Mac, and sometimes even older non-FireWire Macs, despite what the minimum system requirements say.

The problem is now solved, but I'm not sure how I managed it, unfortunately.
Having read the article at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75430, I checked both my Tiger DVD and my first Panther CD, and neither had the firmware updater on them, despite what the article said, so I downloaded it. However I was sure I'd applied a firmware update to the iMac a long time ago, and the 4.1.9 version number seemed familiar.
When I checked, I had in fact already applied the firmware update a few years ago!
I tried running the "Mac OS X Install" application on the Tiger DVD from within 9.2.2 again, and got the same error message as before. I was wrong about the error code though. It was minus 2 in brackets, not 2 in brackets.
The full text of the error message is:
An error occurred.
"Startup Disk was unable to select the
install CD as the startup disk. (-2)"
I tried selecting the DVD manually in the Startup Disk control panel (as before) and running the application again gave the same error message (also as before).
I then went into Extensions Manager to see if there was anything there that might be interfering with things. The only thing that caught my eye was the LaCie SilverLining control panel (which I think was version 6.4.5a). This was something that originally came on a floppy disk accompanying an external hard drive that I used to use years ago at a place I worked, and I used to find it invaluable back in the OS 9 G1 Power Mac magneto-optical external drive days!
I couldn't remember what it was doing on the iMac, but I switched it off, and then clicked "Restart", hoping that when I rebooted (in OS 9) the error message wouldn't come up when I ran the "Mac OS X Install" application.
However, I'd forgotten that I'd switched the Startup Disk control panel to the DVD, so when the iMac restarted, the initial OS X dark grey Apple logo screen appeared, and I expected the dark grey "circle with a line through it" logo to appear shortly afterwards, but it didn't! The iMac booted up from the DVD, which then let me install Tiger! I was then able to apply the 10.4.11 update, plus all the others that Software Update provided. About half a dozen restarts and several hours later, the iMac is now fully updated & configured, favourites are copied over to Safari 3.1.2, and all I have to do is teach my Mum how to use the OS X Finder, Mail & Safari, as opposed to the OS 9 Finder, Outlook Express & Internet Explorer...
Switching off the SilverLining control panel seemed to do the trick, but since the iMac then rebooted from the DVD, not the internal hard disk, I don't see how it could have possibly had any bearing on things! Very weird!
Anyway, thanks to Allan Jones & spudnuty for their advice. All's well that ends well!

Solaris 8 container install problem using Ultra 60 flash archive

It just sits at the WARNING doing nothing.
I connected to the container console using "zlogin -C f714clone" but this just gives me a blank screen with no output and unable to do anything.
I used a different archive from a V120 and had no problems.
Is there something I need to configure for a Ultra 60.

I got this to work. It seems, for whatever reason, that it doesn't like the '-u' flag for an Ultra 60. I installed using '-p' instead and it was fine, it even came up with the new IP I had assinged.

Solaris 8 (x86) Install Problem | No frame buffer console

I am trying to install Solaris 8 (10/00) on my AMD K7 system. After I have selected the installation media, it will say something like "No usable keyboard", "No frame buffer console" then the installation will stop. I'm booting from the DCA and ACPI is disabled.
The configuration of my system is as follow:
Thunderbird 1GHz on ASUS A7V
384MB RAM
Adaptec 29160 (Driver downloaded from Adaptec)
Seagate U160 Disks
Plextor UltraPlex CD
MGA 400 Display card
104 keyboard & Logitech mouse.
I have checked the HCL, and they are on the list. Please help. Thanks.

I am now trying to install Solaris to my other machine... and hoping it will work. This is a K6-2 PC with 192MB RAM and 2 x 8GB harddisks.
The first disk is occupied by Trustix and Slackware (Both are Linux), and I have the entire second dirve for Solaris. Then when I boot from DCA, my machine will keep rebooting itself. IF I boot from CD, it will say cannot find drive for installing Solaris. I have used LBA/CHS/Normal mode for my harddisk - none of them work. Any idea?

Solaris 9 x86 has changed the default for ATA DMA mode: on S9 x86 it's
enabled while it was disabled on S8 x86.
I'd try to change the value of the "ata-dma-enabled" property from 1 -> 0 in the
last DCA menu, in the boot tasks submenu. Maybe that'll help...

Install problems using VISTA, Oracle 10g Express edition and VS2005

Has anybody got this to work yet?
I'm on Vista Release Candidate 1, VS2005 and 10g Express.
When I try to install the tools (ODTwithODAC10202) the install crashes VS2005.
I can see the tools on the Visual studio menus, but any attempt to use them gives me a "Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio failed to load" error message.
Any ideas?

Have you got the VS 2005 addin to work on Vista? I installed on XP then upgraded to Vista (RTM) and the add-in no longer works. Am wondering whether to uninstall/reinstall or wait for Oracle to certify use with Vista.

At startup hold down the Option/Alt key and from the screen that comes up select your OS X partition to start the computer from. Then use the Boot Camp Assistant app to Remove Windows and the partition you reated for it and it will Automatically place the space you allocated for the Windows install back into the OS X partition.
NOTE:
Do NOT use Disk Utility to erase the partition that was created for the Windows install. Use the Boot Camp Assistant app again to do that.

Please try again after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already taken.
Step 1
Reset your computer’s PRAM.
Step 2
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications of the machine.
Step 3
Back up all data to at least two different storage devices, if you haven't already done so. One backup is not enough to be safe. The backups can be made with Time Machine or with Disk Utility. Preferably both.
Erase and install OS X. This operation will destroy all data on the startup volume, so you had be better be sure of the backups.
Step 4
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider to have the machine tested.

Fresh solaris 10 x86 install patch update problems 119060-17 ...

Just yesterday, i installed a fresh Solaris 10 x86 onto some pc hardware. After getting solaris installed and issues with my network card, i downloaded and installed the free version of the update manager 1.0.x. Next, i proceeded to update all the general patches for the solaris 10 system. I started with the command 'pprosvc -i' from a terminal. It then proceeded to download and validate a bunch of patches successfully until it hit the following 3 patches:
119060-17 ---- X11 6.6.2_x86: Xsun patch
122213-10 ---- GNOME 2.6.0_x86: GNOME Desktop Patch
122912-02 ---- SunOS 5.10_x86: Apache 1.3 Patch
All 3 failed some kind of validation and then crashed the pprosvc program, at which point it exited with the following error:
122912-02 cannot be validated
119060-17 cannot be validated
122912-02 cannot be validated
Unexpected Failure: java.lang.Throwable: ERROR: Failed to validate the digital signature(s).
I also tried to use the GUI Update Manager to update, hoping the problem was isolated to pprosvc, but that problem was also in the GUI with a similar error message:
Error occurred...The detailed error message is: Unexpected Failure: java.lang.Throwable: ERROR: Failed to validate the digitial signature(s)
Anyone know why Sun's update patch process is so troublesome?
Getting Tired of Solaris Updates...
I should mention that this is the free solaris 10 x86 install and i don't have a service contract with Sun. If this problem persists, i don't think i'll get one, as i see only further problems after buying one.

In the short-term please ensure that the patch mentioned in it is installed.

Problems Installing Win7 using External, USB DVD Drive

I have a mid 2010 15" i7 MBP which I upgraded to from 4GB to 8GB RAM courtesy of OWC. I recently upgraded the 500GB 7200RPM HD with a 240GB OCZ Vertex 3 and using an OWC Data Doubler, I replaced the DVD SuperDrive with the 500GB Hard Drive.
I used an External USB DVD Drive to install OS X SL On the SSD without issues. Also, I got all my updates and software installed and working without any problems.
I've been running great for about 2 weeks now, so I decided to install Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. I ran Boot Camp Assistant and partitioned the 240GB SSD in half 120/120. Everything went fine with creating the partition. I selected to Install from the Win 7 DVD media in the USB DVD drive and rebooted. I got a grey screen. I turned the computer off and turned it back on. Holding down Option, I selected the Install DVD from the Boot Menu. I then got a screen with the Apple Logo flashing intermittently with a Circle/Cross Hatch. So I can't get the Windows Install to start to save my life. I know the External, USB DVD works since I used it to install OS X and I have no problems using it in OS X. I Know the media works because I tried a test install, without activation in a VMWare Fusion VM.
Any suggestions are appreciated?

So here is the answer. The Firmware on the MacBook Pro only supports installation of OS X from External Media and will not install operating systems from 3rd Parties. I tried to install Windows XP, Win7 Ultimate 32 & 64bit, and Ubuntu 11.04 but no success.
Supposedly, the MacBook Air does support installation of 3rd party operating systems from external media, but I have no way to confirm this.
I ended up reinstalling the internal DVD drive installing Win 7 and Ubuntu on the SSD. Using rEFI, I'm able to triple boot all 3 operating systems. Then removed the drive again and reinstalled the 2nd HD. Everything seems to be working fine.
I'm looking for someone who has experience in Mac EFI Hacking to see if there is a way to enable booting 3rd Party OSes from external media. I'm guessing someone could examine the MBA firmware and figure out how to hack that capability into the MBP.

Installed new superdrive= CD boot problem

I just installed the Pioneer 110 superdrive, and had read previously to set the superdrive as the master and the HD as the slave, which is what I did. Everything works great except when using a boot disk. If there is a boot disk in the drive when I restart, it will boot off the CD without holding down the C key. Does this mean that the HD needs to be the master or could something else be wrong?

The DVD and HD are on the same cable in the G4 iMac... one has to be the master and one the slave. From the factory the HD was the master and the CD drive the slave, but on previous advice I reversed that when I installed the new DVD drive. I think that must have been bad advice but I will wait to hear from others before opening up the machine again, as the boot problem is the only glitch.
When I bought it my Mac dealer told me that PatchBurn is not needed with this drive and that appears to be the case... all the Apple software I have works natively with this drive... no patch necessary.

My iMac is getting really slow. It used to boot in about 30 seconds, now it's over 3 minutes. I am thinking I may backup photo's Videos and such and format the hard drives and re-install OSX. Any thoughts on this?

This computer used to boot up in about 30 seconds, now it's minutes, programs are starting to freeze, or take a long time to boot. I suspect it's bits and fragments from programs that I have used and deleted over the years, but are still floating around inside my iMac. I really don't want to re-format and re-install OSX but the lack of performance is finally starting to irritate me. (Haveing switched from windows in 2009, I can tell you, I used to reformat and re-install windows about every 3 months because I liked that fresh fast boot up feel.) Any advice is welcome. Here's a printout from a program that lists everything using my system.

In addition to Mike's suggestions, you only have 4GB of RAM and Mavericks does use more RAM than other versions. You may also want to look at the apps that startup on login and the possiblity of upgrading RAM.
