X86 solaris 10 installation freeze

Hi,
I have an intel 820 chipset motherboard with a 600Mhz CPU.
When trying to install solaris 10 I get to the "Discovering additional network configuration..." message, then it freezes.
I've tried minimising the hardware, but to no avail.
I do get a warning about a resource conflict, but these appear to be integral components of the motherboard, such as host bridge and bios flash. When I try removing them from the solaris component list, I do get past the above message, but I don't have a working keyboard.
Any ideas?

No, something is wrong is the Solaris install. Sun is merely maintaining their x86 driver ignorance that they've had since Solaris 2.6 x86. "I can see every detail about your card - maker, chipset, version, memory - oh, but I have no clue how to initialize it, so I'll just lock up the installation" That's not the fault of the video card.
Anyway, I want to second the option for #4. That was the only way that I could get Solaris 10 x86 to install, even on industry-standard hardware. Very, very frustrating.

  • No Disk meet the criteria for Solaris installation

Hi all, I have a problem when trying to install Solaris 8 (Intel) on my PC. There are some funny things happened while installing the OS.
1.) My motherboard does not support booting from CD-ROM, so I downloaded a Device Assistant Boot Disk to boot it up. Then I use dd.exe to make the boot disk from the image, I have tried many times that after creating the boot disk, this boot disk will contain 512 bytes of bad sector. So why?
2.) After using this boot disk to boot up and install the OS, before entering to the detection of the bus type stuff (still on the white screen), at the bottom of the screen, it says "ata_command select failed ... ...", what does this mean?
3.) When the system go back to the white screen with language selection, I choose English (which is 1), and the system try to find my hard disk, but it failed and says "No Disk meet the criteria for Solaris installation" with a new line saying "installation documenation found.". So what is happening?
    Appreciate for any help.

  • Solaris installation on amd64 laptop

    Hi!
I am trying to install Solaris 10 on a laptop (HP Pavilion zv6000 with an amd64 processor).
The installation begins normally with GRUB. The problems I a experiencing start when I have the opportunity to choose between 'Solaris interactive', 'Custom jumpstart' and take place whatever is the choice I made with GRUB (Solaris, ttya or ttyb).
The screen becomes almost unreadable. Strange characters are displayed and many others are missing. It is also impossible to interact with the system using the keyboard. The only way to proceed is to wait to reach the timeout to select automatically the default option.
Moreover the installation freezes randomly, sometimes during the countdown (after which 'Solaris interactive' is chosen by default) or afterwards... But this always takes place at different times. Anyway I cannot read what is displayed on the screen.
    Would you have any ideas?
    Thank you very much!

The reason is simple why it's work on VirtualBox. In VBox, this software emulates a generic graphical chipset. In one phrase, we have the same chipset for each machine type.
Look if Solaris 10 can run with VESA driver and when not you can still share the chipset reference that you have and I can try to see if this is supported or not.

  • Solaris 10 freezes during install

    Hello, all.
I'm trying to install Solaris 10 on my home PC.
    Specs:
    1.3GHz Athlon
    20GB HD
    512MB RAM
    ATI Radeon 9600 PRO
When I do an install - regardless of interactive/interactive text console/interactive text desktop, it freezes.
I see the message "Use of this blah blah blah" and then it just sits there. I let it sit for a while, but I can't see it doing anything.
I know it's not much to go on...
    Help?

I have noticed the same behabiour as it seems several other people.
I managed to install succesfully only on one PC with intel PIII 450Mhz by replacing the original graphic card.
I tried to install in several other intel based PCs without success.
I also have a Dell 1850 and a Dell 2850. When booting from the CD/DVD the installation freezes in the begining with the message
"Running Configuration Assistant" and then nothing happens (at least for >10 hours)
If I start with the disk it hangs with the message "Loading driver ata.bef".
Using the disk procedure and giving the sytem a lot of time about 7-8 hours the installation procedure proceeds but it hangs at 99% ( I waited for 20 hours then I stoped the process)
It is really sad that SUN is not able to produce an easy to install product as FreeBSD or Fedora, CentOS, Suse which by the way all of them install on 1850 and 2850 without any problem.

"No Disks that meet the citeria in the Solaris installer documentation found. Please check the system or try another installation option #"
Please help me. I new to UNIX and SOLARIS.Thanks!
    VC

You are probably using the INSTALL CD that comes with Solaris x86.
Don't use it but use the Software CD 1/1 to boot and install the system instead. The INSTALL CD is supposed to be used on a completely blank system (no other OS's) although even there I think Software CD 1/1 does the job.
Also, if you are new to Solaris I advice you to get the FAQ (you can find it on e.g. http://www.science.uva.nl/pub/solaris/solaris2- it should be really helpfull during the first few weeks/months on Solaris

  • Does "rpm" exist for x86 Solaris 10 ?

Does "rpm" ( the Red Hat Package Manager ) exist for x86 Solaris 10 ? I haven't found it on www.sunfreeware.com or by Googling, and rolling my own is getting nasty....
    Thanks !

there is a rpm2cpio command in Solaris, which is useful if you have source code or similar distributed in a RPM package format, but for Solaris installations you have pkgadd/pkgrm, and then there is the pkg-get utility which is downloadable from blastwave.org .

  • Windows 7 installation freezes at "Completing installation"

    Hi!
I'm trying to install Windows 7 on my mid-2010 Macbook Pro 13". I'm running Lion and have installed all avaliable updates.
I've created the partition in BootCamp and the installation starts but when it gets to "completing installation", just after the computer has rebooted the installation freezes and I'm forced to shut down the computer.
    This is what I've tried:
    * To burn several different Windows 7 iso file on DVD's with different speed (from the disk utilities).
    * Remove all USB connections (which is none since I've a wireless mouse)
Then I've no idea what to do more
One thing that could be the reason is that I (before trying to install Windows 7) had to repair my hard drive (which I did from the disk utilities) and I might have done some sort of misstake there...
    Please help!

No help needed anymore, finally managed to install it
The solution was (probably) to eject the CD when the computer reboots and then continue the installation as normal.
I'm not 100% sure this was the solution but anyways, now I've Windows installed.

  • Adobe Reader 9 installation freezes computer

upon running the installation for adobe reader 9, setup gets to 99.90 percent, then a new window comes up, similar to the installation window. Estimated time remaining gets to 9 seconds, then the installation freezes, and so does everything else. A cold reboot is required...
I'm currently using foxit reader to read PDFs (Also, programs that print to PDF files cause a similar freeze.
    Computer details:
    Vista 32 bit Home premium.
    3gb ram
300+gb hard disk space more than 50gb free
    Dell inspiron 530 desktop
Spyware doctor - Avira antivir - and Threatfire installed
Interestingly enough, this is being typed in an open firefox window as the installer is frozen, along with the desktop and taskbar.
    Additional details:
Reader (at that time version 8)
Along with PDFcreator both worked perfectly on my system
After reinstalling windows to clear my system *and changing antivirus to Avira - note no security issues are flagged by avira when installer runs*
Pdf creator went buggy. Pdfs printed by PDF creator would freeze when Reader tried opening them. (Although after restarting the system those same pdfs could be opened)
An attempt to repair the Adobe reader installation for version 8 failed, Then Opening Reader alone would freeze my computer. And I had to crudely uninstall Reader as a result. *May have left files - but I've scoured the Temp folders for them*
Anyway, installing adobe reader 9 then led to the error. (Interestingly, adobe reader 9 did appear installed after a cold reboot, and worked, however it dissapeared after the next normall restart.
&I've tried installing using a new acc, same error.
    &FOxit reader works
&Adobe version 8 does not appear on my system.
&All normal computer functions seem to work..(Although a video on Gamespot recently displayed buggy stuff, not related i think)
    &Installations of other programs work
&i've tried installing in a different directory
&Spyware doc, Threatfire, and Avira scans come up clean.
    Just restarted *cold reboot*
The system took a long time to shut down *held the power button for longer*
And the hard disk didnt stop spinning for a very long time...
It also took a very long time to start the computer
Also, running an installer makes me undo the changes made by the adobe reader 9 installation, since it was suspeneded.

Use the Microsoft Installer Cleanup to remove vestiges of any version of
Reader in your Registry. Then turn off all antivirus and spyware
    programs. Then try to re-install

  • 64-Bit PHP on x86-Solaris 11.1

    Hi all,
we have just set-up a x86-Solaris 11.1 based workgroup server which will be mainly used for web-based applications (like ownCloud, Moodle or openAtrium) at our university institute. As some of the members of our workgroup produce media (i.e. full HD videos), we have to deal with files larger than 2 GB. While it isn't any problem for Solaris' Apache to handle these file sizes, some PHP applications have quite big problems to work with files >2 GB correctly as long as the underlying PHP is a 32 bit binary.
I wouldn't have expected that an Enterprise system like Solaris 11.1 still comes with 32 bit applications as the Solaris kernel itself is using the 64 bit mode on x86_64 for quite some time now. Nevertheless, as I really like Solaris' features especially for stable and large storage solutions, I want to stick with Solaris and will have to find a solution for the mentioned problem...
Recompiling PHP from the sources as a 64 bit application is not a problem. I also assume that I would also have to recompile Apache2 as a 64 bit application to get compatibility to the apache module of 64 bit PHP.
My question is: Is there any "gold standard" to accomplish this? Of course, I can recompile all parts that I need by myself, completely independently from the packaging system, and put them to "/usr/local/..." or to "/opt/local/...". I am, however, not sure if this is the best way. Perhaps there are already packages I could install and I don't know about. I can't imagine that I am the first user who experiences that problem. Would it make sense to switch to an alternative package repository like OpenCSW? What I also thought about, was the following way to proceed: I'm going to take the source packages from Oracle and then compile Apache and PHP (and most probably also MySQL) with the option for 64 bit according to the instructions in the sources. So I can also build new packages which I can deploy into the zones where I need them in.
Is there any better way which I might have overlooked, yet?
Thank you in advance for any help!
    Kind regards,
    Steffen

I also assume that I would also have to recompile Apache2 as a 64 bit application to get compatibility to the apache module of 64 bit PHP. In S11.1 Apache is already 64-bit aware:
    ls -l /usr/apache2/2.2/bin/amd64

The problem is that 64-bit PHP isn't bundled.
You can try to rise an SR on that topic.
It seems that it would be easier to integrate large file support only in 32-bit PHP instead.
Any 32-bit application that is compiled with large file support (-D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE and
    -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64) will work with > 2GB files.
I think that SR could be realized relatively faster than integrating stable 64-bit PHP.

  • Solaris10/UltraSparc Installation Freeze

    Hi
After 20 years of Unix (AIX, then Linux), I am taking my first steps with Solaris. To this end, I have acquired an old OEM UltraSparc machine:
    SPARCengine(tm)Ultra(tm) AXi (UltraSPARC-IIi 440MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.10.8 SME, 256 MB memory installed, Serial #10660470.I am trying to install Solaris 10 from CD-ROM. Installation seems to stop here:
    ok boot cdrom
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1/scsi@1/disk@6,0:f  File and args:
    SunOS Release 5.10 Version Generic_118822-25 64-bit
Copyright 1983-2005 Sun Microsystems, Inc.  All rights reserved.
Use is subject to license terms.
    Configuring devices.
/                           I have removed the (PCI) graphics card and have tried with the hard disc both connected (gives a 'bad magic number' warning) and disconnected. I have also acquired another CD-ROM drive, in case it wasn't reading correctly.
Still it gets to 'Configuring devices' and goes no further. I have left it for a couple of hours like this, just to make sure that I wasn't just being too impatient.
Being unfamiliar with both the Sparc architecture and Solaris installation, it's got me totally stumped.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    TIA
    M

Well, back to it again after a) having the box running Gentoo Linux for some time and b) then working as a doorstop ;-)
I have reset the NVRAM as suggested (thanks for that) and - after much fiddling with hard discs (won't recognise my 18Gb Compaq discs, although Linux had no problems with them) - have made several attempts to install. Each time I get:
    ok boot cdrom
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1/scsi@1/disk@6,0:f  File and args:
    SunOS Release 5.10 Version Generic_118833-17 64-bit

    ld.so.1: svc.startd: fatal: relocation error: file /lib/svc/bin/svc.startd: symbol uu_setd
Requesting maintenance mode...although the ld.so messages only come up about one in three times. Otherwise it just goes:
Use is subject to license terms.
Requesting maintenance modeI'm still of the opinion that Solaris 10 just isn't reliable on old boxes, no matter what anyone says to the contrary. (My media is fine - works in my Blade without issues.)
Think I'll have to put this one back to Linux (Solaris 9 was a real dog).

  • Solaris v10 sparc jumpstart server on x86 solaris - can't find miniroot.

I am trying to setup a jumpstart install server on an x86 solaris v10 machine to do a sparc network install. I downloaded both the CD and DVD sparc v10 ISO's. When I mount the CD, the Solaris_10/Tools/Boot directory (miniroot system) is symlinked back to ../../../s1 which does exist. I can't find it on the CD, I've used prtvtoc and this slice does not seem to exist.
On the DVD iso, the directoy exists, but many files cannot be read, almost like the filesystem is corrupt.
I've download these ISO and burned them many times, so I know it's not an issue with hardware or the CD/DVD media.
Where can I download a working sparc solaris v10 miniroot system?

There is no such entry under solaris. This entry only exist on windows.
On solaris you need to change entries in the kjs script (prior to SP3)
    or iasenv.ksh (after SP3)

At some stage there are problems with creation of a new state...
I remember some time ago (Solaris 2.8) there where problems like that with ipfilter, but now ipfilter included in Solaris distribution, hardware tested and so on...

Thanks, Roman Gnatenko (rvg at co.ru)
