X86 Vs Sparc:

hello,
Being a newbie to solaris I guess you don't mind if I ask few very basic doubts.
1. How does Solaris OS differ in the Intel and Sparc based Systems? ( URL/ Breif explation would help)
2. I've an opportunity to work in Netra i / Sun OS 5.6 /Sparc II/DDS/SCSI environment;typically an ISP environment
I don't find detailed documentation more specific to Netra i server at www.sun.com, Any of you guys suggest such URLs?
Thanks

1. How does Solaris OS differ in the Intel and Sparc
based Systems? ( URL/ Breif explation would help)
architecture on sparc is 64bit, the OS, if installed so, is therefore 64bit too
the main difference is the hardware, the second main is software available for the OS on that platform (i.e. oracle)
2. I've an opportunity to work in Netra i / Sun OS
5.6 /Sparc II/DDS/SCSI environment;typically an ISP
environment
I don't find detailed documentation more specific to
Netra i server at www.sun.com, Any of you guys suggest
such URLs?there is no special thing you should know when operating a netra - that is a very simple hardware. If you start to work with 4+ CPU servers than you need to understand a bit more than the $PATH
read docs.sun.com as one of the bests, lots of usefull links on www.sun.com/bigadmin, patching at sunsolve.sun.com etc

  • What is the cpu architeture of solaris version of BPEL bundle, x86 or SPARC

    Hello,
I'd like to know what is the cpu architeture of solaris version of BPEL bundle, x86 or SPARC located here: http://download.oracle.com/otn/solaris/ias/1012/as_sun_bpel_101200.cpio
The file is more than 400Mb in size, so I need to know before downloading.
    Thanks.

    hi,
are there any plans to release it for x86 (32 bit) platform. I'm also interested in testing beta versions of oracle software (specifically bpel, jdeveloper) on solaris 10 x86 platform, is there any beta CD available for these purposes?
    thanks.

  • SAP on solaris x86 or sparc

    Hi,
Can you please let me know the advantages of running SAP on Solaris X86 or SPARC machines. Which is recommended?
    Thanks
    Joyce

    > If the compnay has very few end users to work on SAP i.e. less than 50 users, then x86  is suited.
    > FOr large ended systems that is for large number of users to work on SAP, SPARC is better choice.
    > SPARC is recommended.
I'm sorry but this is simply not true.
x86_64 is VERY suited for big systems, we run x86_64 systems with 1000+ users, on Solaris and on Linux.
Solaris on x86_64 is a very good choice, a mature OS with lots of features (zones, ZFS...) running on affordable hardware.
SPARC is a RISC architecture, there are even drawbacks in performance if you use e. g. T-series systems (UltraSparc) for ABAP systems and databases (see Oracle Metalink ID 781763.1 - "Migration from fast single threaded CPU machine to CMT UltraSPARC T1 and T2 results in increased CPU reporting and diminished performance").
So it's a matter of taste and choice - and money.

  • How to configure CUPS in Solaris 10 X86 and SPARC

    Dears,
I need help in configuring CUPS for Solaris 10 X86 as well as on SPARC.
    What i did?
    Downloaded the CUPS 1.5.0
    read the readme.txt
    read the INSTALL.txt
    Pre-req installation requires :-
    CFLAGS= -i /some/directory \
    CPPFLAGS = -i /some/directory \
    CXXFLAGS = -I /some/directory \
    DSOFLAGS = -L /some/directgry \
    LDFLAGS = -L /some/directory \
    ./configure --
    It errors out with
    checking for gawk ... no
    checking for mawk... no
    checking for nawk ...nawk
    chekcing for gcc ... no
    checking for cc ... no
    checking for cl.exe no
Configure error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
    see 'config.log' for more details
I installed all the missing dependencies from www.sunfreeware.com and I have the same problem.
I also tried to install the software packages from the operating system dvd... like for
    ls -lrt gcc
    gcc "SUNWgcc", "SUNWgccS", "SUNWgccruntime"
    ls -lrt cc
cc "SUNWgccruntime", "SUNWlccom", "SUNWcctpx", "SUNWccisgn" , "SUNWccinv", "SUNWccfwctrl", " SUNWccfw", "SUNWccccrr", "SUNWccccr", "SUNWccccfg", "SUNWislcc",
"SUNWaccu", "SUNWaccr", "IPLTccons", " SUWgccs", "SUNWgcc", "SUNWmccom", "SUNWmcc", "SUNWusbccids", "SUNWusbccid"
    ls -lrt gawk
    no results
    ls -lrt mawk
    no results
    ls -lrt cl.exe
    no results
Is there any way should i follow apart from the above?
    Rgds,
    Mky

Check pkginfo -l for each package.
export the PATH variable where the packages are installed, like /usr/local/bin and etc.

  • Is there a 64-bit gdb for Solaris (I need both x86 and Sparc)

I'm looking for publicly available versions of gdb for both SPARC and Intel. I'm the current
developer of the NetBeans gdb module and we've had bugs filed that our Solaris users
    can't debug 64-bit applications.
I've built a 64-bit gdb but its trying to dynamicly load a 32-bit .so (libexpat.so.0). I can still
run it by setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH, but can't figure out how to configure my gdb build
to use the right libexpat. Even if I could, I need something like the companion CD or
sunfreeware.com to provide (I'd even settle for gdb.gnu.org:-)
If anyone knows of publicly available versions, please email me.
    Thanks,
    Gordon

Again, I think you need to check the Microsoft web page, as I was able to find 64 bit versions of IE8 for download.
The URL to access the page is
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/internet-explorer/downloads/ie-8
From that page, I am able to select a 64 bit version of IE 8 for the following Operating Systems
      -- Windows XP 64 Bit
      -- Windows Vista 64 Bit
      -- Windows Server 2003 64 Bit
      -- Windows Server 2008 64 Bit
Windows 7 is not listed as an option as it already comes with IE8 installed by default.
Looks to me that Microsoft has already released a 64 bit version of IE8.
In fact, I went ahead and downloaded IE8 for Windows 2003 Server x64 bit, and looked at the details of the file.  Each microsoft download has a digital signature associated with them, showing a date and time of when the exe was built.
According to what is shown below, IE8 for Windows Server 2003 has been around since Sunday, March 08, 2009.
So, what has adobe been doing since March of 2009?  IE8 has been 64 bit for well over 2 years now (it will be 3 in March of 2012). While I know that it does take time to develop new applications, I don't think it would take 3 years for Adobe to come up with a 64 bit version of Reader that could have been built under the 64 bit platform.

  • Does ZFS release on solaris 10 3/05 GA  x86 or sparc?

As subject, Anybody confirm it , plz .

I would be interested in knowing where you read that. SamFS is an archiving solution, its mainly used to share tapedrives and store things on tapes and archive data on disk.
ZFS is a new, dynamic, highly reliable (after they fix all the bugs), cool, multi-terabyte filesystem, if i remember correctly it will take care of other things for you, like mirroring and striping if you wish.
Anyway, i've no clue when it will be relized, before i was RIFed from Sun they targeted into one of the releases, but i forgot which one. I assume they'll release it when it passes QA ;)

Mod jk does not talk to Tomcat's http port. There will be a seperate "Connector" definition in server.xml that defines a different port for the JK2/AJP1.3 protocol. The default port is 8009.

  • SOLARIS X86 TO SOLARIS SPARC MIGRATION

    hi
i have a maxdb database production in Solaris 2200 x86 server , but i need move that database into Solaris 5120 sparc server.
how can i do that migration, because the recovery backup don't work from x86 to sparc server

is the option transport tables of database studio and this option is functionally for data transport from x86  to sparc plataform in two way ¿?
Hmm... why don't you just test it out?
Loadercli in general uses a dataformat that is platform-independent.
    Know what?
Read the documentation MaxDB documentation - Loader and try out the transport with a little test table.
    There's even a Loader-Tutorial available...
It's much easier than making up all kinds of questions of what might possibly work or not.

  • Solaris 8 Containers and x86 compatability

My client relies on a program for the meat and potatoes of our processing. This program currently only works on Solaris 8. We are using Sun Blade 2500 workstations. However we are moving offices and to build up the new lab, the client wants to get away from the Sun workstations and move towards Linux or Windows machines. He is however willing to migrate to Solaris 10 provided the the program that we depend on is still usable. Enter my solution: Solaris 8 containers.
The documentation for containers was not very clear. I am interpreting two different messages from the Sun website. One says that Solaris8 Containers will work on SPARC systems and/or Systems running Solaris 10 10/08 or later. Other documentation says Solaris Containers are SPARC system dependent.
I installed Solaris 10 on a HP x86 based desktop via VirtualBox. I installed all the SUNWs8brandX patches that came with the containers bundle and followed the install setup directions. I cannot verify as I am getting a "Cannot Execute Brand Specific Error" message.
Does anyone else have a suggestion as to how I would get a Solaris 8 dependent program running on a Linux or Windows based machine? Is my solution viable?

    agquint wrote:
What I mean was the post below your first one. But you correctly interpreted it in your next post. So "Solaris 8 containers" only works for SPARC. I don't get why Sun would only have containers support for SPARC systems. That is in total contradiction to why I would think they would develop containers in the first place: backwards compatibility to support programs that aren't yet migrated to the current version of Solaris regardless of whether they are x86 or SPARC. They have a solution but it only works at %50? hmph. There is probably just very little demand for it. During the Solaris8/Solaris9 days, Sun was killing off the x86 line. There is very little installed base of Solaris 8 x86 compared to Solaris 8 SPARC. (It wouldn't help you out, it appears, since you have SPARC binaries).

  • Solaris 10 x86 Version

So, when is Adobe going to get their heads out of their collective ***** and release FM for Unix again (Solaris and Mac)?  I grew up with FM under Unix (way back to version 2).  The Solaris sparc 5.5 version is way out-of-date.
There are several of us here at work that would rather use the Solaris x86 version, as our primary computer is Solaris 10 x86.
As pointed out by others in other discussions, Adobe has mishandled FrameMaker after purchasing it.
IMHO, Adobe has managed to screw up not only FM, but other core products.

I have a pc with cdrom and a netra T1 without cdrom.
Wondering if I can use solaris x86 pc to jumpstart
netra T1(sparc). I heard linux can jumpstart solaris
sparc. You can. The only problem is that it is difficult to read the information from the SPARC CD set (due to the differences in x86 and SPARC UFS filesystems).
If you have the SPARC DVD (or even just the DVD .iso), then it's easier. The same information is replicated so that it is easier to copy onto x86.
Since you only have CD drives, I'd recommend copying the DVD image to the machine, then using lofiadm to mount it up.
Once mounted, it's the same thing as on SPARC, just run the setup_install_server and add_install_client stuff.

  • Profile for x86

    Hi
I tried to create a profile for an x86 pc to jumpstart. But when I run "check", I get an error message. My sparc-profiles are working.
The only difference between those profiles is the partitions:
    fdisk c1t0d0s0 4000 /
    fdisk c1t0d0s1 256 /swap
    fdisk c1t0d0s3 4000 /var

    fdisk c1t0d0s5 400 /unassigned
    fdisk c1t0d0s7 free /export/home
I guess the "fdisk" is wrong?
How do I correctly partition for x86 pc?
Thank you very much in advance!

I use the same keyword 'filesys" as I do in SPARC. Assuming the disk devices are the same there is no need for any differences in my profiles between X86 and SPARC.<br />

  • Orion download Solaris/SPARC

Just downloaded Orion Users Guide from
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/orion/index.html
The Users Guide (on page 2) states that the Orion software is available for Linux/x86, Solaris/SPARC and Windows/x86.
However only the following software files are listed on the download page:
         orion_linux_em64t.gz (767,380 bytes)
         orion10.2_linux.gz (630,354 bytes)
         orion10.2_windows.msi (7,865,856 bytes)
Please include a link to the Solaris/SPARC version, if it exists !
    -- Peter

You can find the Sparc downloads on the site. The problem is actually getting it to run. I've been trying to run it for some time and it keeps giving me the following error:
Parse error: View help screen using orion -help
although I'm 100% sure that the parameters are right. trussing shows that Orion relies on a lot more than the documentation says. I'm currently downloading Instant Client to try to satisfy the requirements (this wasn't mentioned anywhere by the way). http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/htdocs/sol64soft.html
For example, some libraries such as libociei.so, libclntsh.so.10.1 and libociicus.so to name a few.
