X99 gaming 7, wont power up

hi,
I am not sure if its the mb, but since i got i a few months ago i dont know it to well.
my pc was working fine, out of nowhere it shut itself off, now when i hit power the mb seems to send the command, but nothing comes on. some lights come on too. my firs thought is the power supply, since its the oldest part. any ideas, so far i replaced the video card to a less power hungry one and nothing.
i7 haswell_e 6 core
nvidia 780i

thanks in advance

also have reset the cmos to no luck, the manual is very vague on how to do it, but all did was insert a jumper on the pins and waited about 20s.
Do this again, but also remove power cord from power supply, and battery from motherboard. Wait for 5 mins then put this together.

do you guys have any other ideas or a psu recommendation?
Personally I would go for Corsair or Seasonic. I don't trust anything else to be honest. RM/AX(i)/HX series from Corsair, or something 80+Silver or better from Seasonic. With wattage, I would say that 750W is more than enough (for single graphics card).

  • Gaming rig wont power up. Z77A-G45 involved.

    Hello MSI,
I have a problem with my gaming rig.  I recently upgraded to the Z77a mobo, the i5, and the RAM.  Now, that upgrade has been working fine for over a month (no CTDs, BSODs or any glitches at all).  Performance wise, it had been running BF3 and SWTOR perfectly, both on maximum settings- smooth as butter.   Then suddenly 3 days ago it just wont power on.
    MOBO: Z77A-G45
CPU: i5 3570K 3.4Ghz  (using stock fan, no OC.)
    RAM: Corsair CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 Vengeance 8GB 2X4GB DDR3-1600
    PSU: Corsair TX650W
    GPU: XFX HD6870
    OS: Windows 7
SSD: OCZ Agility 2 (running the OS)
HDD:  Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM (x2) (for storage)
At first I thought it was the PSU.  Corsair's website has the handy suggestion of powering up the PSU with the Green wire (PS ON#) shorted to any Black (GND) on the +24V ATX Connection.  I did so with no load on the PSU and the PSU's fans spin up.
Next, I suspected the tower's power button.  so I took an multimeter to it, and the button is working- providing the normal momentary switch action.
Next, I reconnected the PSU into the rig, and again shorted the PS ON# pin to the GND.  Now, there's is some partial activity, but the computer still wont boot up normally.  The partial activity is as follows:
    -cpu fan is spinning
-one blue LED on the mobo's bank of four phase LEDs.
-both HDDs are powered (can feel them spinning)
    -GPU fan is spinning.
Now, I wont lie, I'm not sure if shorting the PS ON# pin is sufficient signal to boot the computer, since the signal isn't coming from the power pins of JFP1.  But it is worth noting.
So based on that train of thought,  I also tried shorting the power pins of JFP1.  Sadly nothing happens- no activity whatsoever.
The last piece of information I have is that in the just before all this happened, I was in the BIOS and enabled the Resume from S3 by USB and also the PS2 Mouse/Keyboard settings.  Even though I've used those settings before, maybe I eff'ed something up somehow.  So I'm planning on resetting the CMOS tonight.
After that, I don't know what else to do other than take the rig into the repair shop- it's got me stumped. Maybe the mobo is dead, or the cpu.
Any thoughts on this crazy problem I'm having?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the suggestion Jerry, I'll give that a try too- but it does seem like a longshot though.
It has happend to me, not with usb but with PS2 mice and keyboard. Gamers sometimes prefer to connect the keyboard to the ps2 port as the mechanical ones will accept a higher number of simultaneous keypresses at this port. Mine till accept more simultaneous keypresses than I have fingers!
Also gaming keyboards will often take a LOT of abuse.

  • X99S Gaming 9 ACK - power supply compatibility - JPWR2 and JPWR3- Status code 00

    Hello,
Setting up a newly purchased X99S Gaming 9 ACK, and would appreciate any help.  Can't get past status code 00 and am in debug mode.
First step in my debug process, I'm trying to confirm power supply requirements.   The board has two 12V input connectors - JPWR2 and JPWR3.  The manual mentions them both.  However, my power supply only has one 12V "EPS12V" cable with an 8 pin connector that can be separated into 4+4.
A quick search did not turn up any power supplies that come stock with two 12V cables.  This seemed odd, so I searched for information for JPWR2 and JPWR3 hoping to find something and what turned up was somewhat contradictory.  Some info out there seems to suggest that powering one of the two would be OK if not overclocking.  So I tried that - first just JPWR3, then split the power connector and did just JPWR2, then did JPWR2 and part of JPWR3....and then just to confirm what I thought I was seeing (that 00 status is telling me the CPU's not active) I removed everything from both JPWR2 and JPWR3.  In all cases, the status code was 00.
So I'm looking to find out how folks with this MB actually working have connected the power.
Question 1:  Does anyone run it without having both JPWR2 and JPWR3 connected?  If so, what approach do you use?
Question 2:  Does anyone run it having them both connected?  If so, please let me know what power supply you use.  I am guessing maybe a configurable cable sort could be set up with two 12V lines?
I know, it's possible with no known-good components (well, the power supply is freshly removed from a happily functioning PC, so it's not suspect) I may have either a bad CPU or a bad MB.  And they are both brand new and eminently returnable.  But I don't want to do that till I know I've got them powered correctly.  I'm relatively confident (well, hopeful) that having the correct power supply setup will let me get past 00 status code and see what else I get to debug.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Thanks for the input.  Reset CMOS, removed all but the first stick of RAM.  No change.  Status code 00.
Initial PS was the Corsair TX750W.  I got another power supply to test that has cables to fill both JPWR2 and JPWR3.  No change.  Status code 00.
So, apparently a DOA Motherboard.  Was afraid of that.  Sending it back to try again.

The JUSB1 (red mark) connector supports MSI’s new Super-Charger technology
which provides quicker USB charging of your smartphone or other USB-powered
devices. To enable this feature, please install the MSI Super-Charger application
on your computer. When the Super-Charger application is turned on, the JUSB1
connector will convert data channels to extra power channels to quickly charge your
connected device. Please note that when the Super-Charger application is turned on,
data transmission and synchronization over the JUSB1 connector will not function. To
enable the JUSB1 connector to function as a normal USB 3.0 connector, please turn
off the Super-Charger application. When the computer is in stand-by or hibernation
mode (S3/ S4/ S5) Super-Charger mode will automatically be enabled.

    • Note that the VCC and GND pins must be connected correctly to avoid possible
    damage.
    • Please only connect one device per USB port to ensure stable charging.
    • Super-Charger Technology is only available on select MSI motherboard models.
Please refer to the MSI website to check if your motherboard has Super-Charger
    technology.

  • X99S Gaming 9 ACK Power Supply Type/Reqs

The motherboard appears to want, for cpu connection, one 8-pin connector (JWPR2) and one 4-pin connector (JWPR3). I've got a new Thermaltake DPS-G 1050 power supply, but it has only the 8-pin CPU connector on it. In fact, none of my power supplies for my other machines have both of those types of CPU connectors.
Is it correct that the motherboard needs both the 8-pin and the 4-pin CPU connectors?  And if so, which brand and make of power supply will work with this motherboard?
    Thanks folks!

    Hi,
No. The motherboard only needs 24 pin connector and one 8 pin connector. Additional 4 pin is for extreme overclocking. My Z97Mpower Max Ac has 8 and 4 pin CPU connectors but I only use 8 pin as I am not overclocking. For medium overclocking also 8 pin is enough.

  • X99S Gaming 7 - Windows ME driver wont load

    OS: Windows 7
    Motherboard: X99S Gaming 7 (H.40 BIOS)
    First Issue --------------
MSI motherboard installation CD includes drivers such as the Windows ME driver which is required by the Included APP "MSI Gaming App" to run, but the driver will not load. I have installed it 3 times, rebooted, and still the MSI Gaming App says it is required when i try to run it. Also Live Update 6 reports that driver as not installed each time even though it installs it. Any Ideas?
    Second Issue ----------
MSI Live Update 6 reports that a newer verison of the BIOS is out, I have version H.40 and the new version is like H.480, i tell MSI Live Update to install it, it reports its installed, i reboot, and it says I still have H.40. Any Ideas?

Don't use Live Update for updates. Download and install drivers manually: http://www.msi.com/support/mb/X99S-GAMING-7.html#down-driver&Win7 64
    Download bios manually also: http://www.msi.com/support/mb/X99S-GAMING-7.html#down-bios
For flashing use MFlash (included in your mainboard's bios).

  • Problem with JPWR2 on a X99S GAMING 7

    Hi,
Currently I have a problem with JPWR2 on a X99S GAMING 7 Motherboard. When I plug a 6 pin or a 8 pin on the JWPR2 the motherboard crash and the cable overheat or short-circuit. My power supply is a 1000W SIlent pro bronze. I tested with a new cable on another port on the power supply but it doesn’t work. I tested with without CPU too but still the same problem.
    Can someone help me ?

you are using the Cooler master 1000W silent pro bronze right?
Normally the power supply should have 4 pin or 8 pin,  the 6pin/8pin is normally for the VGA card and not for the Motherboard.
Please double check again and use the 4 pin or 8 pin for the MB.

    MOBO: X99S Gaming 7

    RAM: 8gb 2x4gb sticks
    SSD: Samsung Evo 850 m2
    GPU: GTX 770
I'm at my wits end, I can't for the life of me get Windows installed to this machine. I've gotten to the drive chooser for the the Windows installer, but the one time it recognized the drive, it told me it wasn't partitioned correctly and couldn't install.
I'm seriously not sure if it's the mobo or the drive. Any suggestions?
    Tried Windows 7/8/8.1/Ubuntu, nothing.

You can simply press the button next to the PS/2 and USB 2.0 ports with the power cord unplugged. Or best way to clear cmos is by taking out the battery (around PCI-E_1 and 3) for more than 5 sec and then put it back, also with the power cord unplugged.
    Basically like this:

  • MSI X99S Gaming 7 Won't Boot

    Hi -
I just recently purchased an X99S motherboard.  I put it all together, and all was fine for about 24 hours.  I updated the BIOS and then started running a defrag and left the machine on while I went to work.  When I got home, the machine was off. It's not responding to the power button the board or on my case.  If I turn the power off on my PSU and turn it back on and hit the power switch, I get a split second flash of lights and then nothing.  I initially thought that it was my power supply so I bought a new one.  I got that installed and same thing.  One thing to note is that the MSI LED up by the 24 pin connector is on red.  I've already tried the secondary BIOS and I have removed all of the memory except the DIMM in Slot 7. I haven't yet tried to remove the board from the case yet and tried it on a non conductive surface.  I just wanted to get some thoughts on that debug LED that is currently on. I believe the motherboard has just died, but wanted to run it by someone first.
    Here are my specs:
    Board: MSI X99S Gaming 7
    Bios: Version 14.7
    VGA:   MSI GTX980 Gaming
    PSU:   EVGA 1000 Watt G2
    CPU:  Intel Core i7-5930K 3.5GHz
    MEM: Corsair Vengeance 2666 4x4gb CMK16GX4M4A2666C16
    HDD: PNY 256GB SSD
    COOLER: Corsair CWCH60 Water Cooler
    OC: None
    OS: Windows 8.1 64bit

Take it out of the case, place on non conductive surface (wooden table, motherboard box) and run it then. Also try with single RAM stick in every RAM slot.
Try clearing CMOS >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
Also make sure all power connectors are properly fitted in.
What way did you update the BIOS? Also was it successful?

  • MSI X99S GAMING 7 - slow booting; HDD aren´t recognized in BIOS

    Hi,
i´m facing a similar Problem as it is described in  "MSI X99A Gaming 7 and Samsung SM951 PCI-e very slow boot time" https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=255919.0
    My rig:
    - i7 5930k
    - X99S Gaming 7 (BIOS h90)
    - PALIT GTX 980 Super Jetstream
    - OCZ revodrive 3 x2 240 GByte (System disk)
    - Corsair Force 3 120 GByte (game disk)
    - 2x SAMSUNG HD501LJ 500 GByte (SATA 3GB/s)
    - 1 LG Electronics BH16NS40
    - 16 GByte Corsair Vengeance LPX schwarz DIMM Kit 16GB, DDR4-2666, CL15-17-17-35 (CMK16GX4M4A2666C15)
    - 1000W power supply
    - ANTEC P193 case
    - G19 Keyboard
    - MX518 Mouse.
I assembled it yesterday and during the first booting sequence it restarted 3 times.
After that it took 5 minutes to be on the Windows Desktop. Furthermore I recognized that all the HDDs and the optical drive weren´t available.
I tried to activate them in the Windows System - with no result. Than I checked the BIOS, they weren´t present there.
At the end i checked the HDDs only with the power supply, they booted. As soon as I connect them with the SATA cable they stand still - no spin up hear-able.
Now The BluRay and the HDDs are disconnected, the booting sequence is a Little bit faster (still 3 minutes).
In the BIOS I only activated the XMP-Profile für the RAM and I changed the booting sequence for the REVODRIVE.
May someone has any hint for me, how to deal with this Problem - but as I stated at the very beginning: it sounds similar to me.
    Best regards from Austria
    Gerald
P.S.: I apologize for "hijacking" - I tried to simplify the Forum by merging similar issues.

    Your explanation isn't very helpful.
Your third try you got the Revodrive, corsair, and optical running? Meaning that you could boot multiple times and have it all work correctly?
I hate saying it, but if you aren't going to be descriptive, we aren't going to be very much help.
For what it's worth, I'm starting to think that the Revodrive and the motherboard do not work well together.
Personally, I would also consider contacting MSI directly about the issue. They might be able to issue a new BIOS that improves compatibility.

When BIOS updating fails or causes the computer non-bootable, you can recover the
failed BIOS by the steps below.
    Preparation:
    1. Prepare a bootable USB flash drive.
    2. Download the latest BIOS file from the MSI official website at www.msi.com, and
    then decompress the file.
    3. Copy the AFUDE238.exe and the BIOS file to the bootable USB flash drive
    BIOS recovery steps:
    1. Power off the computer.
    2. Set the Multi-BIOS switch to the functional BIOS ROM.
    3. Insert the bootable USB flash drive you have made to the USB port.
    4. Boot the computer into the bootable USB flash drive.
    5. Set the Multi-BIOS switch to the failed BIOS ROM.
    6. Execute the below command to flash the BIOS:
    For example: AFUDE238 EXXXXIMS.XXX
    7. Restart the computer after the BIOS flashing is complete.
    Important
Do not use the Multi-BIOS switch when system is booting up.
