X99 SLI plus and Quad Channel issues

Hey guys. I just managed to get some time to throw together my new rig, and am experiencing a very frustrating problem.
I bought the ms9 x99 SLI plus, 4x4 gigs of G.Skill ripjaws 2666 ram, and a 5820k.
I initially put it all together, and it wouldn't post. After a process of elimination I discovered it would post with 12gb of RAM in slots 1,5, and 7. But as soon as I add one to 3, it's hooped. It also won't boot with 1,3,5, or 1,3. It will boot with 1,7, just 1, just 7 etc.
I've browsed the forum and found that this problem with these exact parts has arisen in the past, but I couldn't find a definitive answer. I also took a look at the CPU socket and didn't see any bent pins.
I installed windows fine, it runs fine, installed drivers etc (and its hella fast), but I do need that additional RAM for work. I'm planning on updating the BIOS tonight, and I tried clearing the CMOS early on.
Also I know its not the RAM as it boots with each stick by themselves. It seems to be a Quad channel issue, or a DIMM3 issue.
Any information is greatly appreciated. It's a super sexy board and I'd hate to have to dismantle, send it back, etc. I'm going to Hawaii in a week and was hoping to have all this working.
Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately you will have to. There is no magic and this is obviously hardware issue, whether it's the board or CPU.
Start with inspecting CPU socket pins. You will need a magnifying glass or you can take clear macro pictures of the socket.
Best do it on a bench outside the case, any non-conductive surface will do, wood table, cardboard etc. don't use antistatic bag.
Be very careful when mounting/unmounting the CPU, do not touch socket pins and CPU contacts with your fingers.

• X99s SLI Plus isssue - quad channel memory not being recognzied

I have 8x8 for a total 32 GB of the following memory:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233696
When I have sticks in 1,3 5, and 7 it shows up as quad channel.
When I fill all slots, it does not.
It shows all 32 GB but not quad channel. I'm not sure if I missed that the board does not support this or what.
Right now I am running the 162 BIOS. Had the same issue with 150.

You're not really meant to use 2 separate kits of RAM. It's because since Z77 series, Intel chips started to go funny about mixing RAM, and the further it goes (Z87, Z97) the less people get successful with using 2 kits. So I really suggest you replace these with a single kit and see if it works then. Or speak to local PC shop/IT services and ask them to test the board.
That seems a little absurd considering they are the exact same memory in both 16 GB sets, and I can interchange every single RAM module from one set in with the other and it works perfectly fine. T His sounds more like a BIOS/Motherboard limitation than a memory limitation. What's the point of having eight RAM slots if you cannot put 8 sticks of identical ram in it and get Quad channel?
On a side now I have upped it to 4.2 Ghz running at 1.18v for 8 hours now on Prime95, highest temp was 62C and the Bus at 125, memory in quad with just 4 sticks in 1,2,5,6 running at 3000 Mhz.

• MSI x99s SLI Plus USB 3.0 Issues

Hi All,
Having issues with my MSI x99s SLI Plus - I recently purchased a Netgear A6210 (Network Adapter; supports USB 3.0); when plugging it into the USB 3.0 ports (I've tried all the USB 3.0 ports) on the back, the device goes into a constant disconnect/reconnect loop (not the network, the actual device, as if I'm physically removing and connecting it), sometimes 3-4 times, always at least once. It does eventually stop and then the device proceeds to work as normal, however, this does not happen on the USB 2.0 ports. I've tried to rule out the A6210 by plugging it into another computer (USB 3.0) and it works fine. I have all the latest drivers (the board is only 2 days old) for both the MOBO (latest BIOS v1.8) and A6210... its strange, anyone see anything like this?
Specs:
MSI x99s SLI Plus
i7-5820k
4GB Crucial Ballistix
GTX 980

It sounds like an issue with the motherboard firmware in some way.
I would contact MSI directly about the issue.

As a side note, I looked on Netgear's forums, and it really appears that there is quite a bit of problems with the A6200 line of network adapters......

• MSI X99S SLI PLUS and XP941 - Booting, but very erratic behavior

I finally got my XP941 to boot in my X99S SLI PLUS using the beta BIOS. I Still can't see it listed as a drive in the system settings, but Windows 8 install sees it just fine, and I can see the "Windows Boot Manager" option available to boot from. Windows is booting just fine now, however it will freeze up for about 3 seconds about every 10 seconds. I used CrystalDiskMark and found that speeds were over 1000MB as expected for sequential reads, but 4KQD32 reads were absolutely abysmal. I can't remember the exact number, but it was around .012 I've seen other reviews of the XP941 showing much higher speeds than this. I think the slow random read performance is causing the machine to lockup and have erratic behavior.
Does anybody have any ideas? or can anyone confirm that their SLI Plus is running this m.2 ssd just fine?
Another note is that I am only using 1 4GB Single Dimm of memory until my real memory kit arrives. Would running just a single dimm cause this?

Hello cbutters, I have the same configuration and I cannot manage to have the XP941 working (MZHPU256HCGL-00000).
The win8.1 setup does see it but after copying the files and rebooting it won't start.
What bios version do you use ? Can you indicate the specific settings you modified in the bios to have it working ?
thanks
Using BIOS 136 from here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=183560.0
Using default BIOS settings to start from, then enabling windows 8/8.1 features and changing it to M.2 PCIe. I didn't touch the SATA Config after loading defaults. (I don't have any memory remapping settings available to me either).
Keep in mind that the device won't show up as a sata device, so don't even bother looking for it. You just have to start installing windows and trust that it will show up.... make sure after initially installing windows 8.1 and first reboot that your first boot option is "Windows Boot Manager". The install was really quick. See my youtube video here:

• X99 SLI Plus & Z77 Mpower USB issue

So I just upgraded to the x99 from the z77 and noticed that both boards when powering down the system and unplugging all the usb devices (keyboard, mouse, joystick, trackir, headset) and plug them back in, when the pc boots up the usb devices are not working properly, on the z77 mpower this would even cause the wifi to stop working. I move my pc around a lot and this is getting kind of old and annoying. I thought that it was just an issue with the one board but now that I have the x99 and have the same isue I'm wondering if this is some kind of setting for a faster boot or something (although I do not have fast boot enabled). I've search high and low for a way around this problem but I cant seem to find anything. If I make sure and plug each device back into the port it was removed from then it works fine other wise i have to only plug in mouse and keyboard, boot up, unplug them both and then plug all my devices back in (even with just mouse and keyboard if the plugs are swapped the keyboard lights up but does not work, the mouse works but only basic 2 button no scroll wheel. And yes they are plugged into the top most standard usb ports).

what's your OS?
Did you also unplug the power cord between your usb unplug and plug back?
Try doing the completely shut down to S5 before you unplug the power cord.
or try reinstall your USB driver and clear CMOS.

• MSI X99S SLI PLUS and 5820k Overclocking failed

I'm trying to overclock this processor on this nice board
But somehow as soon as I raise the BCLK it won't start, even for 1 extra Mhz (100 --> 101).
My memory : Gskill DDR4 3000 Mhz is compatible and I just used the included XMP profile.
I will describe here what I have done but I cannot find a solution to raise the BCLK.
Step 1 : check the CPU overclockability at BCLK 100 Mhz.
Vcore @ 1.2v and Vring @ 1.2v --> perfectly stable @ 4Ghz for core and 3.5 Ghz for ring.
Not very high but at least it works and it validates this first steps. I'm planning on going higher but after completing step 2.
Step 2 : under clock the core and ring but raising the BCLK.
Vcore @ 1.3v and Vring @ 1.3v --> the system starts @ BCLK = 100 Mhz but refuses to start @ BCLK = 101 Mhz and above . Ratio on both core and ring are set so that frequency stays @ 2.8 Ghz.
Memory is left to Auto on all settings.
If you have any idea that could help I'll be happy to try.
Thanks.

It worked !
What I did was setup the value to 125 by hand. And reboot. But the motherboard wouldn't start ...
So I looked at the indicated values and I saw the memory with this setting was supposed to run at 3334 Mhz ! which of course was the source of the problem. So I tried various settings for the memory and the one that worked was CLK @ 266, Speed @ Auto and XMP @ enabled.
With these settings the MB booted correctly !
So I can now continue to fine tune, especially core and ring frequency and voltage.
Thanks for your help, I think that discussing and exchanging ideas helped me. Hope some thers can benefit from it.

• Re: x99s SLI Plus Memory Slot / Boot Issue

Forgot to mention, running an Intel 5820k. Also, if I were to just have the CPU and 1 stick of memory in slot 1, I don't get the 3 beeps. However, it refuses to post/go to bios. If I remove that stick (no sticks), I get the 3 beeps. That's true for all...

Tried unplugging battery + AC adapter then adding them back and start BIOS but still same white underscore and black screen (and no USB devices plugged in). I can't actually remove SSD+HDD because that would require me to open the case, voiding the war...

• MSI X99 Sli Plus can't boot Quad Channel

Hello,
some days ago i bought my new x99 Sli Plus.
I installed everything, right now it's running with a 5820k and 2x4 Gskill 2400 Mhz ddr4.
The main problem is that the system can boot only with 2x4 Block in the DIMM 1 and DIMM 5 position.
If i try to use all my DDR4 modules ( actually 4x4) the system wont boot.
I put in triple channel (3x4GB ) in DIMM 1-3-5 and in quad channel (4x4GB) in DIMM 1-3-5-7
No Signal and no boot image.
I've tried some Corsair DDR4 running at 2666.
Same problem.
It only boots in dual channel on DIMM1 and 5.
that's how i insert the modules.
Thanks for the reply.

Hi,
Is my understanding towards your post correct: your system boots only in Dual Channel, but also only when using slots 1&5?
Try each slot individually with only 1 RAM stick.
Check around the CPU socket and RAM DIMMs looking for any colour changes, smell, scratches or anything like that. If you find nothing, then my last suggestion is you check the CPU socket looking for bent pins (make sure to use magnifying glass and bright light).
As additional,possible, solution:
There was someone with pretty similar issue. From my understanding, what they did is that for every time they've inserted a SINGLE stick, they went to BIOS settings, saved and shut down to insert another one (saved just to make sure BIOS/motherboard recognised the RAM stick inserted).
So my suggestion for now is:
Go to BIOS as with 2 sticks.
Manually change timings to: 15-15-15-35, 1.2V (check box of the RAM to make sure what they are, but according to GSkill that's timings used for 2400MHz DDR4)
Save and Shut Down.
Insert 1 stick (to appropriate slot). Try to boot.
If boots, go into BIOS, check that timings remained unchanged, save and shut down. Do the same for 4th stick.
If you find nothing, and nothing works, I suggest you contact the seller.

• MSI X99 SLI PLUS Memory Issue

Guys,
When I try to do Quad Channel DDR4, the system will not post. Currently, I have an 8GB Sticks in Slot 1, 3, 5. When I place a stick into slot 7, the system won't post. If I remove one from 3 or 1, it will post. Currently able to use 24GB/32GB. I opened a support case and they told me to re-seat my CPU and check my power supply... not impressed. I see BIOS .162 floating around the forum not sure if that would help.
Also to note, I have moved the DIMMs around to different sockets, I had one that showed up in socket 3 as 4GB, swapped socket 5 and 3, both now show 8GB.

Try clear CMOS, if it still have problem...
You can also try to flash to BIOS 1.62 to see if help or not.
Are you able to try on another motherboard, or borrow another DDR4 to test if defect mem-slots?
I have taken the following steps:
1. Upgrade BIOS to 1.5
2. Reset BIOS to Default State
3. Reset CMOS
4. Moved the DIMMs to different slots, including the one I cannot place in the system since it won't post with a 4th DIMM.
As noted, for some time, I was not able to get more than 20GB to show up in the BIOS, only after re-seating and moving DIMMs around was it finally able to see 3 x 8GB sticks. Are you able to give me the errata for the 162 BIOS as well as the "Fix/Change" list I'm all for giving it a shot, just want to know what I'm getting into.

• MSI X99S SLI Plus Persistant Boot Issue

I upgraded my system 4 months ago with an X99S SLI Plus, i7 5820, GTX780, Avexir Platinum 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 RAM
The boot procedure has never been problem free and has now settled into the following sequence
1 Press START
2 Freezes at MSI Logo or Windows start
3 Press RESET
4 Windows REPAIR/START as NORMAL screen appears
5 Select NORMAL
6 Windows starts and thereafter runs without problems
Usually steps 2 to 5 have to be repeated one or more times
Very occasionally it will boot straightaway
I use W7 64 and have BIOS 1.5
All drivers are up to date
I use OC Genie which overclocks to 3.8. These problems occur whether OC Genie is enabled or not.
If I use SLEEP rather than SHUTDOWN it will restart without any problems.
Any assistance with this annoying problem would be appreciated.
PS Not sure if this is related, but the XMP option doesn't appear next to the OC Genie button though the RAM is described as XMP enabled

test it with 1 memory stick only, see if the issue will still exist when you do this

• Can 1st and 3rd slots of X99S SLI Plus be used for SLI?

yeah its a shame, makes for a bad design if using sli on air imho, one card runs 20-25c hotter than the other :(
if I had known of this design problem i would have gone for a different board :(
can't understand MSI's reason for this?
not looking forward to the summer heat coming, might have to try water cooling (if there is room) but even that looks a tight fit?
has anyone run wwater cooling on the MSI GTX970 Gaming on these boards?

Hi
Try to install drivers located on this website:

Make sure to pick correct operating system.
Which exactly USB port do not work?
Also, does device manager show any errors? Like here:
Within device manager you can try to run "Scan for hardware changes" (or something like this) and see if that helps.

• MSI X99S SLI Plus & Samsung XP941 SSD

Hello All,
I have just put a system together using the MSI X99S SLI Plus board and a Samsung XP941 M2. SSD.
The base build is done and I have tested it for stability and all is ok (Windows installed onto the M2. SSD in PCIe mode).
I have connected drives to SATA ports 2-6 (intentionally left 1 out for now, another SSD later); the system boots with no issues from the M2.SSD.
I experience issues when I connect drives to the SATA ports 7 and 8. When drives are connected to these ports, the system does not correctly detect the M2.SSD. Note, ports 5&6 have been left disconnected as per the manual.
During bootup in this configuration the system will report that the M2.SSD is:
ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
(yes y with the two dots above).
In short, it does not detect it correctly, if the system is left to boot it just shows a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen.
The only way I have been able to get around this issue has been to set the sSATA (ports 7-10) to IDE mode, this then allows the system to detect the SSD and all appears to work. I don't want to use the sSATA controller in IDE mode and would like to get it working in AHCI mode.
Has anyone else experienced this or have any recommendations on what I could try? I have attempted other configurations to get this working to no avail.
Thanks for any help!

I RMA the my MSI SLI PLUS X99S for the second time. Explained about the quad channel is not working even the bank 5 , 6 , 7 and 8 are not working with a single memory stick. Iam done with it they have tested in 1,2,3,4 but thats dual channel. the have not tested it on bank 5.6.7 and 8. Can someone here from MSI contact Alternate.nl Netherlands (holland) from the reseller to return this Board. I payd for the Quad channel feature and not dual channel . I tested it again not working! iam realy angry about this, because i have spend lot of money for this and the quad channel doesnt even work with the latest bios i installed even downgrade it to 1.4 ! Please one of the helpdesk to contact them thank you!

• X99 Sli Plus WHEA 17 Errors.....Again

So I decided to go back to MSI and bought my second X99 Sli Plus board. Thinking that by installing the latest bios (5 revisions since I had the first X99 Sli Plus) that of the kinks would be worked out. Sure enough after updating everything and reinstalling all of the newest drivers. WHEA logger 17 errors are once again flooding my System logs.
Is there a fix for this?
I went to an x99 Asus board for a while, and had no issues. After searching around, both Evga and Asrock have fixed this with Bios's.
Please for the love of god someone tell me how to make this stop other than disabling event viewer. It's annoying to no end.

Hi I have the same whea logger 17 issue again and again on my MSI X99 SLI PLUS!
I have the latest nvidia installed, the bios is the version 1.8, the graphic card is galax gtx 980 SOC (factory overcolocked).
For now I found a solution which is not a real solution. If you force from the bios PCI-E to GEN2 (in place of auto or GEN3, that is PCI-E 3.0), the whea logger errors suddenly disappear.
That's why I think the problem is a bios problem. Maybe next bios update must be focused on solving the issue. It's like we are not able to run gen 3 cards in this way.
Please MSI fix this issue in the next bios update!!!!
(or If somebody know how to solve this issue in a different way please help us out)

• MSI x99 SLI Plus Unstable

I just finished building my new PC with the following specs:
MSI x99 SLI Plus
I7-5820K
16GB Corsair LPX 2666-15 Ram
Evga GTX 980 SC
Evga G2 SN 850W
I have been experiencing system instability. I updated the bios to the latest 1.3 firmware. XMP Profile 1 enabled.
My PC randomly freezes unable to recognize keyboard or mouse inputs. I must hard reset at which time it reboots normally.
I ran Memtest86+ & it returned 8 errors during the first pass on test 6. Memtest86+ would also freeze during testing. I subsequently ran Windows Memory Test for 10 passes with no errors or freezes. I ran Memtest86 with all 12 logical cores in parallel for 25 passes with no errors or freezes. I reran Memtest86+ and have not been able to replicate the errors or freezing.
Today the PC froze & rebooted on its own. It was as if the power was being tripped as it would die turn on die turn on and then finally booted to a blank screen. The strangest part was that the on-board motherboard reset wouldn't work. I pressed the switch and nothing happened. I was able to reset the PC via the front panel switch. When the PC rebooted it displayed an error message about an overclock instability. I HAVE NEVER OVERCLOCKED the CPU! The only change to the bios was enabling XMP. The problem is very random and intermittent. Is it the Motherboard or RAM?

I upgraded my PC a month ago with this bundle
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-023-OG&groupid=2833&catid=2512
which has the same MB/CPU combo and have been experiencing similar problems regarding stability. I've updated the BIOS to 1.3 and have run the Windows memory test without error.
I've tried several OC methods - the Overclockers UK setting, OC Genie and my own modest OC which involved just changing the CPU ratio to 38.
The Overclockers OC has never run successfully while the other two seem to run for one session OK but when I switch off then restart I get the 'Overclock instability' message.
It seems to run OK at the default setting though booting up can sometimes be problematic with it freezing intermittently at the MSI Logo page or at the Windows screen just before the animated logo starts.
Resetting then either solves the problem or produces the Windows error screen and selecting 'Start Windows normally' solves the problem.
BIOS B which I have never updated seems to run without issue.
I'm reaching the conclusion that this MB is inherently unstable at anything other than default settings.
