X99S MPOWER and 780 Lightning 2-way SLI

Hi,
After more than 4 years I'm thinking of replacing my beloved i7 930 @4.2GHz and MSI X58A-GD65 with a i7 5820K and a MSI X99S MPOWER.
However, I currently own a MSI GTX 780 Lightning and it is my intention to get a second one to go SLI, so I am a bit concerned regarding the spacing of the PCI-E 3.0 slots on the latter motherboard.
According to the mainboard manual, tha I downloaded, the X99S MPOWER only supports 2-way SLI on the slots named PCI_E1 and PCI_E3 slots, which are spaced 2 slot apart. Given that a 780 Lightning basically covers 3 slots, the configuration recommended by the manual is unusable. What I would need instead is to use the slots named PCI_E1 and PCI_E5 in the manual, which are spaced 4 slots apart.
Would that be possible???
I cannot believe that MSI has designed an enthusiast-oriented board that cannot be used with a 2-way SLI configuration based on their flagship nVidia graphics card... so, please, tell me it's not true!
P.s. I have checked the X99S XPOWER manual and with that board I would be able to set up the 2-way SLI the way I need, but it costs almost £100 more than the X99S MPOWER...

The layout of X99S Mpower is indeed quite bad. If using recommended slots PCI_E1 and PCI_E3 for 2-way SLI thermal issues are a sure thing for the upper card if it fits at all as there is just one slot in between. Still you can use the 2nd card in PCI_E5 without a problem (if SLI bridge is long enough and can cover three slots). This will just change the lane setup what is irrelevant in your case. Your 5820K just offers 28 lanes anyway so 2nd card would be at x8 in any case. The only difference when running in PCI_E1 and PCI_E3 would be that first card stays at x16 in 2 way SLI but that's irrelevant if 2nd card is at x8 none the less. Using PCI_E1 and PCI_E5 both are running at X8. That's would be the maximum possible on a socket 1150 board and SLI works fine in this config. For the nvidia driver the populated slots are not relevant for enabling SLI, both slots just need to run at x8 minimum.

  • Can I run a GTX 780 Lightning 3-way SLI with 2 Stock 780s?

    Hello all, quick question.
I currently have 2 of the release date GTX 780s from MSI running in SLI. Unfortunately, it's hard to find the original cards now (and if you do, they are pretty expensive).
I got a 4k monitor a while ago and i came across a cheap 780 lightning so i purchased it. I did a quick check on MSI's website and for some reason it says N/A next to 3-way sli for this card even though when comparing it to the stock card which says it does support 3-way SLI. Does anyone know why? The only difference between this card and my others is a slightly higher core clock/boost speed. I figured adding it SLI would be easy. Any ideas?
This post won't let me insert links but the "Stock" card i am referring to is the MSI N780-3GD5 on their website, and the N780 Lightning.
    Thanks guys!

as long as they are using the same GPU (GTX780) and have a equal frame buffer size on all 3 cards it should work in triple SLI as long as you have a good enougth power supply and your board supports 3 way SLI too!
    Thanks! I appreciate it.
I have a 1300W power supply, and I just purchased a new MSI X79A-GD45 Plus motherboard. I believe this one supports 3-way SLI.

  • Mpower max 780 lightning UEFI not displayed right and windows 8.1 no DVI-input

    Hi all,
I’m new to the forum, I’m very sorry that my first post is the posting of a problem.
I’ve read several treads just to be sure I’m not asking the same question twice.
In this case I have 2 problems, both are problems more users have issues with but not as a combination of both, that’s why I posted it.
    I’ll start with my rig:
    Intel i7 4770K
    MSI Z87 Mpower Max
    MSI Geforce GTX 780 lightning
    Crucial Ballistix tactical BLT2C8G3D1608ET3LX0CEU
    Crucial 2.5" M500 480GB
    Seagate Barracuda 7200.14
    Seasonic Platinum Series 860 Watt
    Asus VG248QE monitor
    The problems
After installing my rig myself I stated it up and everything worked fine.
    Installed windows 8.1
Installed a few games (I couldn’t wait to try it out)
Then after shutting down and starting up de the next day the problems started
The bios screen wasn’t displayed right:
    - Resolution isn’t correct
    - Getting art-effects when trying to adjust a setting in the bios
    - When saving, bios is stopt working with an error message that the bin file is incorrect
so setting up the bios is a big problem
The second issue is that when I let it go and load windows 8.1:
    - It shows the partially BIOS image (big yellow M)
    - Then the windows logo with the loading circle
    - Followed by a black screen and my monitor telling me that there is no DVI signal
    What I’ve done so far:
A windows 8.1 repair (so everything whipped) “fresh” install on my SSD then again install of the Nvidea driver.
This worked for a hours of gaming funn, with 3 or 4 reboots of the system (so I thought problem fixed).
Sadly not, I began to check the forums and found that I needed to run W8.1 in safemode to clear the Nvidea drivers en again install the latest version along with the Intel VGA drivers.
I’ve tried that but no luck on that one.
And yes I’ve tried to clear CMOS (several times)
I’ve tried to flash the BIOS but I can’t select my USB drive when I press F11 (so I’ll be trying another USB stick soon)
Getting the bootsequence to boot from USB isn’t an option also because of the bios screen issue.
Does anyone have the same issues, or even better does anyone have a solution to all my troubles?
    Thanx,
    Quasi

Ok it is in legacy mode then. Waiting for your report. If it comes up on the igpu also check the bios version. Would be better than guessing.
Oke tested the HDMI cable, after starting up finally i got a normal BIOS view again.
BIOS Version E7815IMS V1.2 (so it's 1.2 instead of 1.0) so much for guessing...
As expected windows started normally in high resolution.
So i think the problem is that the MB bios doesn't work wel with the videocard or the videocard is DOA.
any thoughts for the next step?

  • MSI Z87 Mpower 1150 / 780 lightning x2?

I wanted to know if the Z87 Mpower 1150 board will hold two MSI GTX 780 Lightning cards with the reactors on them still.  They kinda take up three slots so I am unsure.  I wanted two lightning cards for my new build but I am unsure if the two lightnings will fit for SLI.  Thank you for your time I appreciate the help.  It would not let me post any external links, let me know if you have any questions or need any more info.
    Thank you!!

Yes, but since you are spending the money you may want to look to a board that will run the cards at 16x each?
The one you have picked will run two cards at 8x / 8x
    http://www.msi.com/product/mb/Z87-XPOWER.html#download
    5x PCIe 3.0 x16 slots (PCI_E1, PCI_E2, PCI_E3, PCI_E5, PCI_E7)*
    The operating mode will be x0/ x16/ x0/ x0/ x0, x16/ x0/ x0/ x16/
    x0, x8/ x0/ x8/ x16/ x0 or x8/ x0/ x8/ x8/ x8.*
Support for installing up to 4 PCIe x16 expansion
This board will allow more space between the cards and 16x /16x operation.. If going for overkill, might want to go all the way

  • MSI Gaming 7 x99 3-way SLI plus wifi card

Hi, I'm looking at buying the MSI Gaming 7 x99 and an I7-5820k.   I know the CPU has 28 lanes.  Can I do 3-way SLI and use a WiFi PCIE x1 card in the last open pcie slot at the same time?  I assume it would be 8/8/1/8.   I don't plan to use the M.2 slot.   Thanks
    David

nope! what it will do them is this x16/ x16/ x0/ x8 (its weird)
    3 way 28lane- x8/ x8/ x8/ x0
    3 way 40lane- x16/ x16/ x0/ x8
I don't think you can use all the x16 size slots at once on that board!
to have 4 lots active you would need a Gaming 9 with 3 way SLI and 1 open x16 slot (they make it awkward with the insertion of RAM as you have to take out the upper graphics card to open the latches)

  • GTX 780 Ti Gaming 3 Way SLI

I  bought three GTX 780 Ti Gaming cards and was planning on running them in 3 way sli. However, the  metal back plate on the cooler prevents the use of a standard 3 way sli bridge. Is it even possible to run 3 way sli with these cards, and if so, how? I have 2 way sli running using a single sli bridge, but how to do 3 way sli has me stumped. Any help would be greatly
    appreciated.

Quote from: Cinderelli on 08-February-14, 07:48:41
First off, the question is regarding tri sli on the GTX 780 Ti Gaming cards. I need to know if there is a  TRI sli bridge that will work with these cards, BECAUSE....the metal back plate on the coolers PREVENT me  from using a regular TRI sli bridge. To the best of my knowledge there is no such " flexible" bridge for TRI sli. I have flexible 2 way sli bridges, but they are for two way, not THREE way sli. As for what platform etc etc, all of that is moot.
The mainboard used 'is' relevant, as if it doesn't support Tri-SLI, a 3-way bridge setup is moot. You want assistance? Give some information please.

The devices are not designed for transfer of that kind.  Use Photo Stream as suggested by another poster, or transfer photos to your computer (a good idea anyway since they will be lost if your device needs to be reset), then use iTunes to sync them to the other devices.

  • X99S GAMING 9 AC - 3-WAY SLI BRIDGE...?

    Hello everyone,
I got this mainboard and installed 3 titan cards in the pci slots 1, 2 & 4... To get this to work in sli, I use my old asus 3-way sli bridge with 6 connection points. This is not the best solution since its running on 8x-8x-8x on the pci buss... Iwe asked msi for help because in the manual it says I can run 16x-16x-8x if i put the 3 titans in slot 1, 4 & 5... Now they have sent me 4 "single wide-sli" bridges that I can put on... Since I use 3 cards will only be needing 3 of these bridges... But can anyone please post an image how to do this...? Iwe had several mainboards before, and the sli bridges for 3 and 4-way sli has allways been bundled with the mainboard. I remember my evga x58 mainboard had 2 different 3-way "doube wide-sli" bridges and 1 4-way bridge included for different innstallations of the graphic cards...
If you see on page 12 in this evga document, the sli bridges i thought was bundled with the msi mainboard are shown, and the long 3-way bridge looks like the one I thought msi was going to send me: Ok, link did not work...

Thor, I am setting up a 980 3 way SLI with the 5930k...do you managed to get the cards working at slots PCIE 1,4 e 5 at full speed (16x,16x,8x) with the crossed bridge? It reaches slot 1 to slot 5 crossing? Is that it?
Or you get full pcie speeds with slots 1,2 and 4? What solved the problem? Can you post an image of the cards in the slots?
    Thanks!
Hi jpouza, Im not allowed to post a link to an image of my sli bridges on this forum, but I can describe it:
Im using 3 sli bridges from msi that is 13.8cm long each...
I have the cards in slot 1, 4 and 5, this is running at 16x16x8x... This is the best as you know (40Lanes)...
I have tried before 1,2 and 4 @ 8x8x8x, and this gives a lower result in benchmarks...
One display card have 2 plugs, lets call them 1 and 2 (counting from the left to the right)... The " " sign represents the pci slots:
First:     Connect one bridge between display card "1" plug 1 and display card "4" plug 1...
Second: Connect one bridge between display card "4" plug 2 and display card "5" plug 2...
Last:      Connect one bridge between display card "5" plug 1 and display card "1" plug 2...
This last bridge is a little tricky because its in my opinion just a little to short, but you can put it on carefully...
The Blue image earlier in this post shows the 8x8x8x setup, since the distance between the cards are equal...
In the 16x16x8x the connections are the same, but you need longer sli bridges because you use pci slot 1, 4 & 5...
    Hope this helps you...

  • MSI x99s MPower: who is selling it?

I guess the subject says it all.  I'm looking online but can't find the x99s Mpower for sale anywhere.  Any ideas if, when, and where it is for sale?

Yeah, I got my eye on this one two.  I already own a Haswell based system so I don't need to upgrade now.  But, my nephew is wanting to buy the guts of my system (motherboard, memory, CPU) to replace the older components in his system.  He knows he can get the stuff from me relatively cheap.
If I can talk him into waiting after the new year starts so these motherboards can get BIOS and driver updates, then I may purchase a Haswell-E/x99 system. A 2011-3 based system with the i7-5930k CPU would last a LONG  time thanks to 3.5 Ghz speed and six cores.
The MSI x99s Mpower board uses an Intel NIC (I hate the killer NIC, what a joke...) and has multi-BIOS.  If this board is priced right, it could be the x99 board to get, IMO.
I know MSI sells the x99s xPower AC which is the big brother to this board.  I would like to have wireless networking, but it's just priced way to high for a feature I hardly ever use.  If the Mpower is a priced high for my tastes, I'll settle on the x99s SLI Plus, if I go with MSI that is.
I'll just keep a look out for this board then and look for reviews.
    Thanks a bunch!

  • MSI Z97 GAMING 9 AC + GTX 780 TI GAMING 3G SLI

    Hello,
I have been trying to install my two GTX 780 TI videocards in SLI. It works fine when i put them in PCI slot 1 and 2, can easily enable SLI in the nvidia control panel. But the problem here is that the space between the videocards is so tight that the cards get extremely hot. So i decided to change the seconds videocard to PCI slot 3, so there is more space between the cards. But now i cannot enable SLI in the nvidia control panel, it just doesnt show the option. Tryed to look in the BIOS but i cant find any option that could fix this.
What should i do to get this working?
    Kind regards,
    Valdarym

    Few solutions:
#1: Replace thermal paste on both cards.
#2: Test which card is running colder and place it as #1.
    #3: Watercooling (bit expensive)
#4: Better airflow within the case. Maybe additional 2 fans, one blowing from the side of the cards and 1 from the front of the cards.
#5: Buy bigger case with more places to attach fans to (quite expensive too).
#6: Buy MSI Z87 MPOWER MAX AC which seems to have a lot more space between PCIe#1 and #2.
#7: Refund the new card and stay in single card setup.
Can't think of anything else that sounds logical.

    - MSI X99S Mpower
Here is my problem so far:
At first I thought it might be a ram problem, but after doing a CDOS, I was able to boot with 4 RAM sticks to windows, using my SSD.
However, after I resetted and connected my other two HDDs, the computer doesn't boot.
Now, the computer will only get past the Boot phase if there's no hardrives attached, (Doesn't matter if it's one of the empty ones, or the SSD, or another HDD from another computer with windows in it that works)
I wont even get into the splashscreen!
I am unsure as to what might be causing this problem or how to solve it, I am not tech savy, and honestly, after the problems last computer gave me, I thought my bad luck was out and than building this one would be a breeze!
I suspect the MOBO might be defective, since it's weird that it gets past bootphase alright, but doesn't accept any SATA devices.
I tried to change the cable 3 times, (PSU one, and SATA cable) even to a different version that didn't come with the MOBO, I also tried two hardrives, an SSD and an HDD but neither will let me get to splashscreen if connected to the Motherboard.
I need all the help I can get! Thank you!
