XA transaction performance

Hi,
I'm using Weblogic for JMS (using MDB to process messages) and Coherence as a Caching solution. My MDBs are under transaction and I want to perform operations on Coherence using the same transactions. to do such a thing I installed Coherence JCA connector and use the Adapter.
This seems to be working, however I have a big performance impact (my thoughput is divided by 4 or 5) Is this a normal behavior ?
In my code I'm maybe doing a mistake: I create a cache for each message :
adapter = new CacheAdapter(ctx, "tangosol.coherenceTx",
CacheAdapter.CONCUR_OPTIMISTIC,
CacheAdapter.TRANSACTION_GET_COMMITTED, 0);
NamedCache cache = adapter.getNamedCache("dist-test",
getClass().getClassLoader());
Can I create the adapter in the init method of the mdb ? I don't think so because of the transaction for the Initial context...
Luc

Hi Luc,
sorry, I misunderstood you, I thought that using no database also means no JMS either, because if the JMS queue uses a JDBC message store (which we normally used so that we can get resource joining by using the same connection pool / datasource as our data access code is using), then you in fact are using a database.
If you use only a JMS queue and Coherence and if it is possible to recognize redelivery of messages from the data in Coherence caches and data in the message, then I would still suggest managing your own Coherence transaction with TransactionMap-s (and throw a RuntimeException/EJBException if commit to Coherence failed) and upon processing the message you should do the redelivery check. This would allow Weblogic to optimize away using XA for the JMS delivery transaction as the only transactional resource in that transaction would be the JMS queue itself.
If it is impossible to recognize redelivery, then you should probably use the CacheAdapter.
I only wish that the JNDI lookup in the CacheAdapter constructor could be replaced with something else, since according to our profiling in an earlier project, it was taking the largest part of the CacheAdapter construction and initialization. The connect() call can probably not be avoided but that took only one third of the time the JNDI lookup took.
Best regards,
Robert

• How to Report on transactions performed in SRM_MDM catalog (SRM5 MDM2)

What is the recommended way to do reporting for transactions performed INSIDE SRM_MDM catalog ( SRM5, MDM2.0)
Users inside SRM_MDM catalog can search for and select Product ABC and u201Ccompareu201D between 2 or more suppliers.
Where do I get reporting (Data Manager , syndicator?)
Is it possible to get reporting of the shopping cart (MDM catalog). I choose Supplier X at price $12 vs Supplier Y at price $11 for product ABC. Were trying to find out how many times users choose a higher price for a product instead of a lower price for the same product.
By the time i transfer the Cart to SRM the selection has already been made and i cannot report on it...
Option use BI to run report in MDM catalog..?
cheers

Hi Alex.
This was a really a good initiative of bringing this topic into this forum.Integrating SRM-MDM Catalog to BI for reporting purposes.
But this functionality is not offered as a standard. Also SAP has to come up with such innovations in the future.
I can think of some workaround to achieve your functionality(but not 100%)
You can achieve this by using Shopping List* functionality provided in the SRM-MDM Catalog.
You can create your own shopping list and before you transfer items to SRM, you can push those data to Shopping List, so that
you can have an entry of items which you are transferring to SRM. So now you can integrate MDM and BI to bring up an analytical report based on the item which is transferred using Catalog.
One usecase which is missing here is "How many times a person is shopping the same item" which couldn't be achieved from SRM-MDM Catalog and MDM side. But could achieve it from SRM end. You can write this logic in the BADI when the data is transferred back to SRM.
Hope it give you a some idea.
*Shopping List = Favourites
Thanks

• Slowness in Cost Manager costing the Inventory Transactions : performance

Hi All,
We have just upgraded to R12.0.6 and we are facing performance issues with the Cost Manager ..it is costing the Inventory/Material transactions very very slowly..about 1-2 Inventory transactions are getting costed within a minute.
The Actual Cost workers are taking a lot of time to process the transactions as well..
Could someone please suggest or help us troubleshoot this issue , as this very critical as we are facing this performance issue in 12.0.6 production enviornment.

Hi,
Can you find any errors in the CM/DB log files? Do you run Gather Schema Statistics and Purge Concurrent Manager/Programs on regular basis?
Please see if these documents help.

Hi,
Whenever you execute any activity in the process tree, you will find that activity log (protocol log) will be generated in front of the activity.
Click on the logs , on the subsequent screen you will find the name of the program (in the header) related to that particular activity.
Thanks

Thank you very much, I am looking from now for a good performance Tuning book writen by Jonathan Lewis. I dont think Jonathan can come to Spain and give lessons...Anyway I will email to him...
But, could you please clarify 2 points to me
1- Should I modify manually memory parameters like buffer cache, shared pool, large pool etc...if those areas are spotted Small and areas causes of performace problem in the AWR, ADDM or ASH reports even if the memory is automatic managed ?
In the case of yes, Why Oracle named it "Memory automatic managed" if I have to set some values of memory manually ?
2- When ADDM report suggests me to increase the SGA size; from where ADDM got this recomandation?. I mean is it recomandation based on statistics collected of Both Oracle and OS ? I am asking this question because, from our report I ran 3 weeks ago, ADDM suggested me to increase the SGA to 10GB (total memeory of the serve is 16GB), I did the change and from that moment the server is SWAP... and now ADDM report suggests me again to increase the SGA to 12GB .

• Monitor/trace per transaction performance stats

Is it possible to trace stats like cpu time and num of IOs for each committed transaction and log them one row per transaction? Thanks, Stan

Yes it is possible through statspack which give you all other performance related information. But it is also very resource consuming job. so be carefull while using it.

• Autonomous transaction performance

Hi,
My trigger issues a ddl, so I had to do it in an autonomous transaction to avoid the problems with commits in triggers. Is there any performace consideration doing so? Does the DDL command execute slower in a trigger in an autonomous transaction as in a normal one issued by the appliaction?
Thank you very much in advance!
torell

Oracle has been using autonomous transactions under the covers for years, so I would assume that there won't be a noticable performance penalty, if there is in fact a penalty. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that the performance is identical.

status varchar2(1));
WHEN I PASS THIS QUERY
select date,empno from t1 where dated between '1-may-2007' and '30-may-2007'
it will results all the dates in which transactions are performed,and skipping the dated in which that empno is null...
my query is that query will return all the dated between passed parameter and if status is found null display 'A' .

You can create a second table with any range of dates that you require and cartesian join them;

Experts,
I know the answer to this lies in between ABAP and BASIS areas...
How and where do we analyze performance of standard transactions WITHOUT running any traces?

the answer is 'no at all'.
You can analyse performance without using the trace, you can MEASURE the performance,
result is, It need x seconds, but I don't know why'.
I was told that cristal balls help .... sometimes.

• Oracle 9i Transaction Performance (Real World vs. TPC)?

Hello:
I was curious if anybody reading this forum has a server/disk architecture that has achieved over 10,000 Oracle Database transactions (with logging enabled) per second?
If so, can you please supply me with the clustered or standalone server and disk farm (NAS, SAN, DAS) details.
Thanks,

Hi,
have a look at http://publications.uu.se/theses/.
This site is now up for nearly one year. We're using Oracle 8.1.7, Apache 1.3.24 and Tomcat 4.0.3. We've got about 4500 hits per day with a maximum up to 9000 hits.
Regards Uwe Hi there Uwe,
Given you are running this in a production environment, are you running the XSQLRequest object or are you running the servlet directly. Running the servlet directly in particular, is just not production ready, unless I am missing something.
1. There are no direct filesystem logging capabilities in the servlet. Doing inserts into a db table for the purposes of logging, is not adequate as the critical points in the servlet operation is either connecting to the database or in the post query phase during the xml transform.
2. Errors like invalid db connections, timeouts, invalid xsql/xsl files, ie All xsql-xxxx errors other than query errors are not trappable from the servlet either via xml or otherwise. They get written directly to the Output stream as text.
Using the XSQLRequest object programmatically, we can work around some of these limitations, but that defeats the purpose and the otherwise ease of use of this servlet in a XML envirnoment.

• BDC using call transaction

Hi ,
This is vijay...
can anyone help me plz
Hi,
Iam uploading data using call transaction.Tcode is ff67.In this TCode we have the begining balance(ssald) and ending balance(esald).The new record we are uploading will take the begining balance as the previous record ending balance, if we give the begining balance wrong then the record does not saved it will show error(the begining balance does not match with the prior ending balance).
while uploading the data using MODE A iam able to get the desired output but by using the MODE N iam not able to get the desired output i,e if there is any error in the begining balance also the record is being saved iam not getting the error message.

Hi,
First , keep the mode "E" and check the debugger , you can exactly see where the error is and let me know, what error and where it is stoping.
By your coding, i suppose to think that, its proble in the amount (currency). When ever you are try to pass the value, and value is not there in upload file or data is mismatch, the call transaction will fail in mode 'A' and succesful in mode 'N'.
In that situation use this before the currecny field.
IF NOT FEBMKA-SSALD IS INTIAL.
perform bdc_field using 'FEBMKA-ESALD'
gu_upload-esald.

• PERFORM ... ON ROLLBACK

Hi all,
i have some code in an user exit at the end of TO creation. I also write there some Application Log Messages. But when i throw an A Message in this user exit the Applog is empty after the transaction because the A Mesages causes an rollback. I had the idea to solve this with an perform on commit routine but this form routine is never been executed. Has anyone an idea what i have done wrong with this statement?
Thanks in advance
Steffen

I solved the problem in another way:
i write all my Application Log Messages with a function module that i call with fuction destination 'NONE'
so all the Application Log Handling is in a seperate program context.
after the A-Messages is thrown in the user exit and the rollback is performed, the Application Log is on the database anyway.
here a short sample:
create Applog ( in an own RFC able function module as wrapper for BAL_LOG_CREATE ):
CALL FUNCTION 'Z_BAL_LOG_CREATE' destination 'NONE'
EXPORTING
i_s_log                       = s_log_hdr
IMPORTING
E_LOG_HANDLE                  = log_handle
EXCEPTIONS
MISSING_LOG_HEADER            = 1
LOG_HEADER_INCONSISTENT       = 2
ERROR                         = 3
OTHERS                        = 4.
Add Message to Applog ( in an own RFC able function module as wrapper for BAL_LOG_MSG_ADD ):
CALL FUNCTION 'Z_BAL_MSG_ADD' destination 'NONE'
EXPORTING
i_log_handle              = log_handle
i_s_msg                   = s_bal_msg
EXCEPTIONS
MISSING_LOG_HANDLE        = 1
MISSING_LOG_MESSAGE       = 2
LOG_NOT_FOUND             = 3
MSG_INCONSISTENT          = 4
LOG_IS_FULL               = 5
ERROR                     = 6
OTHERS                    = 7.
save Applog to database( in an own RFC able function module as wrapper for BAL_DB_SAVE ):
CALL FUNCTION 'Z_BAL_DB_SAVE_SINGLE' destination 'NONE'
EXPORTING
i_log_handle             = log_handle
EXCEPTIONS
MISSING_LOG_HANDLE       = 1
LOG_NOT_FOUND            = 2
SAVE_NOT_ALLOWED         = 3
NUMBERING_ERROR          = 4
ERROR                    = 5
OTHERS                   = 6.
throw A-MESSAGE:
message axxx(yyy).
the transaction performs a rollback but the applog is written to database anyway.
regards steffen

• View past transation performance of ABAP and portal

I would like to know where I can find past statistics on transaction performance for both an ABAP stack and a java like a portal system.
I am familiar with NWA on java but I don't know where to find a performance period for inbound transaction and how many seconds it tooks to process.
Also I would like to know the transaction where I can find how long it took for a transaction for a particular period or a particular user.
I know under admin--> workload there is a large bunch of information but I need to find transaction performance and I can't seem to find it under this tcode.
Thanks
Weyland Y.

Weyland,
You need to enable Portal Activity Report for Enterprise Portal 7.0 and then you will be able to see it.

• What is the diffreence between call transaction and session method

hi gurus
can any one suggest me
what is the difference between call transaction and session methods
in which cases we have to use teh call transaction and
in which cases we have to use session method.
thank you
regards
kals.

CLASSICAL BATCH INPUT (Session Method)
CALL TRANSACTION
BATCH INPUT METHOD:
This method is also called as ‘CLASSICAL METHOD’.
Features:
Asynchronous processing.
Synchronous Processing in database update.
Transfer data for more than one transaction.
Batch input processing log will be generated.
During processing, no transaction is started until the previous transaction has been written to the database.
CALL TRANSACTION METHOD :
This is another method to transfer data from the legacy system.
Features:
Synchronous processing. The system performs a database commit immediately before and after the CALL TRANSACTION USING statement.
Updating the database can be either synchronous or asynchronous. The program specifies the update type.
Transfer data for a single transaction.
Transfers data for a sequence of dialog screens.
No batch input processing log is generated.
http://www.sap-img.com/abap/difference-between-batch-input-and-call-transaction-in-bdc.htm
Among the two methods call transaction is better compared to session bcoz data transfer is faster in it.
Differences between call transaction and session.
Session Method:
1) Data is not updated in the database table until the session is processed.
2) No sy-subrc is returned.
3) Error log is created for error records.
4) Updation is always synchronous.
Call Transaction Method:
1) Immediate updation in the database table.
2) sy-subrc is returned.
3)Error need to be handled explicitly.
4) updation can be synchronous as well as asynchronous.
2) ya u can use using the N mode no screen.
3)u can't handle multiple transaction in call transaction.
4) u can handle multiple transaction in session using the BDC_INSERT fm.
5)When u go to SM35 u can able to see the error records.
Which is best?
That depends on your requirement. Both of them have there advantages.
According to the situation u can choose any one of these.
difference between batch input and call transaction in BDC Session method.
1) synchronous processing.
2) can tranfer large amount of data.
3) processing is slower.
4) error log is created
5) data is not updated until session is processed.
Call transaction.
1) asynchronous processing
2) can transfer small amount of data
3) processing is faster.
4) errors need to be handled explicitly
5) data is updated automatically
For session method,these are the function modules to b used.
BDC_OPEN_GROUP
BDC_INSERT
BDC_CLOSE_GROUP
For call transaction,this is the syntax.
CALL TRANSACTION TCODE USING BDCDATA
MODE A or E or N
UPDATE A or S
MESSAGES INTO MESSTAB.
Take a scenario where we need to post documents in FB01 and the input file has say 2000 records (2000 documents, not line items in FB01 but 2000 records)
In the BDC call transaction method
We call the transaction FB01 2000 times (once for each record posting) and if the processing fails in record no 3 it can be captured and start with reocord 4.
Eg: Loop at itab.
call transaction FB01
capture errors
endloop.
In the session method.
We do not explicity call the transaction 2000 times, but all the records are appeneded into a session and this session is stored. The processinf of the session is done wwhenever the user wants it to be done. Hence the errors cannot be captured in the program itself
Check these link:
http://www.sap-img.com/abap/difference-between-batch-input-and-call-transaction-in-bdc.htm
http://www.sap-img.com/abap/question-about-bdc-program.htm
http://www.itcserver.com/blog/2006/06/30/batch-input-vs-call-transaction/
http://www.planetsap.com/bdc_main_page.htm
Batch Input Session method is asynchronous as told by others here. But the advantage of this is that you have all the error messages and the data for each transaction held persistantly. You don't have to code anything for processing them or writing the logs.
But at the same time, the same feature can be disadvantageous if you need to react to an error or if there are too many errors to manually correct in a session. Since the session are created in the program and its execution is done seperately, you loose the trackability of such transactions.
With a call transaction, what was a disadvantage above will become an advantage. Call transaction immediately gives you messages back and you can react to it in your program. But the disadvantage is that, if you have several hundreds of transactions to run, running them from within the program can be resource crunching affair. It will hamper the system performance and you cannot really distribute the load. Of course, you have some mechanisms with which you can overcome this, but you will have to code for it. Also, storing the messages and storing the errored transaction data etc will have to be handled by you in the program. Whereas, in batch input session, your program's job is to just create the session, after that everything is standard SAP system's responsibility.
Ideally, you should do a call transaction if the resources are not a problem and if it fails, put the errored transaction into a session.
You can decide based on the data volume that your BDC is processing. If data volume is high go for session else call transaction will do.The call transaction updates will be instantaneous where as session needs to be processed explictly after creation.
Session Method
1) Session method supports both small amount of data aswell as large amount of data
2) data processing is asynchronus and data updation is synchronus.
3) it process multiple apllication while perfomaning validations.
4) in session method data will be updated in data base only after processing session only.
5) system provide by default logfile for handling error records.
6) it supports both foreground aswell as background process
in bdc we use FM ...
bdc_open_group " for creating Session
bdc_insert " adding transaction and bdcdata table for updating database
bdc_close_group " for closing Session
Call Transaction
1) Call transaction exclusively for small amout of data
2) it supports only one apllication while perfoming validations
3) there is no default logfile, We can explicitly provide logic for creating logfile for handling error records.
we can create logfile by using structure....BDCMSGCOLL
4) it doesn't support background processing.
5) data processing is synchronous and Data updation is Synchronous( default), in
this method also supports daya updation in asynchronus process also.
syntax:
Call transaction <transaction-name> using BDCDATA
mode <A/N/E>
update <L/A/S>
messages into BDCMSGCOLL.
BDC:
Batch Data Communication (BDC) is the process of transferring data from one SAP System to another SAP system or from a non-SAP system to SAP System.
Features :
BDC is an automatic procedure.
This method is used to transfer large amount of data that is available in electronic medium.
BDC can be used primarily when installing the SAP system and when transferring data from a legacy system (external system).
BDC uses normal transaction codes to transfer data.
