Xbmc-standalone no sound [SOLVED]

Hi All,
I have re-installed my media box and decided to go standalone this time instead of using a window manager.
Everything has installed fine except when stock standard xbmc plays music/video there is no sound.
Alsa libs is installed but alsaplayer also does not play anything .... what am I missing?
I have made sure that pulseaudio is not installed as I have heard issues with that ... how do I get ALSA to play?
Is there a way to check devices and if they are muted?
Thanks,
B.
EDIT: I found I had to unmute the IEC958 output (optical coax) by  the command "amixer set 'IEC958' 100 unmute"
Now at least I have system sounds ... i.e I get the clicking sounds while navigating the menu items, but still get no sound
when playing music/videos etc. XBMC complains about: "cannot initialize output device"

What's the output of
aplay -L
Have you unmuted the everything relevant in alsamixer?
Have you set up the audio output in XBMC's settings? (System --> Settings --> System --> Audio Output)

  • XBMC-standalone config files location [solved]

    My HTPC seems to have corrupted one of the XBMC config files (probably the library) and now it doesn't seem to be able to add any videos (even with .nfo files) to the library (and it has lost quite a lot of videos that were already there).
    I've looked everywhere to try and delete the config files however I can't seem to find where they are when XBMC is started using systemctl (I thought I'd struck gold with "/usr/share/xbmc/system/" however deleting them didn't help).
    So far I've tried removing and re-installing XBMC and deleting /usr/share/xbmc/system (which is removed when uninstalling XBMC) and it doesn't seem to have reset configuration is there anywhere else I should look?
    Thanks for the help.

    There is no XBMC folder in any of the users under /home/ as it is run by the XBMC user created by the package. However you did make me think of looking at the .install file for where is puts the home directory for the user and the config files are in there ('/var/lib/xbmc/.xbmc/' if anyone else ever needs to find them).
    Problem solved.
    Thanks

  • [SOLVED] XBMC-standalone and LIRC

    Hello everyone,
    I have been fiddling around with a minimal Arch setup to just run XBMC. So I installed it and enabled the systemd service. Everything works just fine. So I installed lird and a self-compiled kernel module for the XboxDVDDongle which works just fine with lird, when I test it with 'irw'. But how can I tell XBMC to use my xbox dongle as input? Since I don't really know how to manually confgure XBMC because in standalone mode one does not have a '~/.xbmc' folder anywhere. I am a bitepuzzled here. Can anyone shed some light on this matter? Thanks in advance!
    Last edited by Labello (2013-11-19 19:11:55)

    I recently fussed with getting this working myself, and in my case apparently the issue lies in XBMC itself; it expects a /dev/lircd when there isn't one in newer LIRC versions such as Arch use.
    Try copying the stock lirc.service to /etc/systemd/system/ and modifying it as follows:
    [Unit]
    Description=Linux Infrared Remote Control
    After=network.target
    [Service]
    Type=forking
    ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/mkdir -p /run/lirc
    ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/ln -sf /run/lirc/lircd /dev/lircd
    PIDFile=/run/lirc/lircd.pid
    ExecStart=/usr/sbin/lircd --driver=default --device=/dev/lirc0
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    Then try rebooting and/or restarting XBMC and the LIRC service.
    Relevant bit is only this one.
    ExecStartPre=/usr/bin/ln -sf /run/lirc/lircd /dev/lircd
    I added the other ExecStartPre due to some odd issues with /run/lirc not being created like 1 out of every 10 boots, not entirely relevant to this specific issue.
    Thanks go to this thread for the original solution!

  • No sound solved

    Hi,
    My integrated audio line outs have been mute since I got my mother board four months ago. I finally managad to solve the problem. It was a loose jumper in a front panel audio connector on the motherboard. You couldn't notice it by naked eye. MB didn't redirect sound back from the front panel connector to the integrated line outs. Hammering the jumper obviously solved the problem.
    Now, I need to get ICH5 and Maxtor Diamondmax SATA play together =)

  • New install from ftp and cd no sound SOLVED

    Hi,
    I've done everything I can find to get sound on this new ftp install but can't get sound to work with the 2.6.23 kernel.
    I've updated a couple of other systems to the new kernel and it has kept sounds working fine but not this new install. I've unmuted everthing and raised levels etc.
    modprobe .conf has this from running alsaconf
    # --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
    # --- ALSACONF version 1.0.15 ---
    alias snd-card-0 snd-intel8x0
    alias sound-slot-0 snd-intel8x0
    # --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
    Please can you give me some tips. I've a feeling it's something silly I've not got quite checked off right in alsamixer.
    /etc/rc.d/alsa start is done and alsa is in my rc.conf daemons.
    Thanks
    Regards
    edit;
    I've done another install from cd this time and said no to update to kernel 2.6.23 so now I've got 2.6.22 and sound still does not work. I've done many Arch installs before and never had this problem. what could I have overlooked? xmms with streamtuner is receiving signal but no sound. No system sounds either.

    Nope no errors from VLC or Rhythmbox.
    Though i noticed in the volume mixer, i now have 2 devices, which i don't think i had before...
    Usually i'd have my webcam or usb headset plugged in, but they're not atm, just my soundcard.

  • Enemy Territory no sound [solved]

    my SB live works fine with either esd or alsa but nothing comes through under ET.
    Is there a fix?

    Indeed there is. I'll tell you what I did.
    add this to your /etc/devfsd.conf file:
    REGISTER ^sound/.* PERMISSIONS root.audio 0660
    REGISTER ^snd/.* PERMISSIONS root.audio 0660
    then (if you dont already have an "audio" group), do the following as root
    groupadd audio
    then add your user account into the group via ( usermod -G audio username ).
    restart the devfs deamon, so the changes will take effect. And the sound shound now work. I had just figured this out today, as I was playing with no sound in et for a couple of days now.

  • Xbmc+nvidia+vdpau issues [SOLVED]

    I've been at this for 5 hours straight now, and i'm back to square one. I've tried xbmc-svn but that one didn't even have "vdpau" listed as an option, so I tried xbmc instead. And yes vdpau is showing up as an option but no matter what I try the screen gets screen/grey/different colors everytime I try to launch a movie using vdpau, tried nvidia and nvidia-beta same issue.

    OK, will give that a run after work this evening. I stand corrected, I did not realize that hte repo version was the same, for some reason I was thinking that it was 340.4x or something. Not to self, do better research. As far as the Xorg :0 -configure, I deleted all of the xorg.conf i could find. (~/xorg.conf, /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d [actually delted the entire /etc/X11 directory] /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf [once again, rm -rfv'd the entire X11 directory) so I was hoping to start with a blank slate, and use the -configure command to give me something to work with. At this point, I want to use the nouveua drivers, as by and large they seemed more reliable than nvidias (I had the repo version on before this whole mess, which may have contributed to getting me into this mess.) In that case, do I still need the nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf? (I don't remember ever seeing that file, even when I first setup this system.) The other two I should be able to locate pretty easily. (Tried to keep backups of stuff as I deleted it, or like you said, the wiki has most stuff that I've needed so far.) Oh, and yeah, the root config file is the result of the -configure command. I knew it was there, but it didn't seem to make a difference, which I chalked up to the configure erroring out.
    so, at this point, I want to remove the /root/xorg.conf.new, remove the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d (preserving the directory itself?) and remove anything other than
    10-evdev.conf 10-quirks.conf nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf
    , and consider checking the wiki for "virgin" versions of those three. Do I have that correct?
    and, lest I forget, I am deeply grateful for your kind advice!! (not used to being on this side of a problem, I am deeply familiar with android, and over on XDA forums, I have helped many people through smartphone issues, kinda humbling to have to ask for help.)

    Yeah, I'll go over everything again.  I don't have any outside controls that I know of outside of alsamixer because I'm in Fluxbox, but I might start uninstalling things until sound starts working hopefully.  I started thinking and realised it could be a program conflict.  My card is an Audigy 4 using the Audigy 2 Value driver [which is usual].  And for alsa not to be fussing at all?  Very strange, but maybe there is still an error message somewhere.

    /usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:1256: failed to obtain info for control #6 (No such file or directory)
    Sound doesn't work anymore.
    On a second machine, I get a similar message, the difference being the referenced soundchip(sblive card in that case), but sound still works...

    I would check the installation of nspluginwrapper and nspluginwrapper-flash because lib32-alsa-lib is listed as a dependency in the nspluginwrapper-flash PKGBUILD and so should not have to be installed manually.  Also, did you run "nspluginwrapper -v -a -i" as your user and not as root after installation?

  • Problems with sound [SOLVED]

    Hi archers
    since using arch... i've noticed when i log into my desktop, a little notification pops up on the bottom right hand side of my taskbar saying something along the lines
    of
    HDA Nvidia Playback is not working.... falling back to default.....
    sound still works ok after this.... but I do alot of recording using qjackctl and ardour2........ Qjackctl refuses to connect because of the HDA Nvidia issue... it won't connect to it because it says its in use........... there is also a digital, default, and analog one to choose from, but none of them work. I know in other distrubutions of Linux, I had no problems with HDA nvidia sound working..... and no problems getting qjackctl to connect to it. I don't have any other soundcards on my mobo
    I guess my question is........... does anyone know how to fix the issue with my correct Sound driver?
    im happy to upload any info you need
    thanx

    i might also add, this is the error when i try to connect to hda nvidia (which is my sound) from qjackctl
    the playback device "hw:0" is already in use. Please stop the application using it and run JACK again
    cannot load driver module alsa
    Somehow the alsa driver module isn't loading when i log into my desktop? any ideas?
    I found this http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-450336.html
    but when i try to restart alsa... i get this error............sudo /sbin/alsa force-reload
    sudo: /sbin/alsa: command not found
    [kaddy@archbox ~]$
    and I can't find Alsa in that directory               Maybe I don't have Alsa driver installed?
    I had a look in pacman and theres no Alsa driver... but I found some entries on aur........
    extra/alsa-firmware 1.0.20-1
         ALSA firmware package
    extra/alsa-lib 1.0.21.a-1 [installed]
         An alternative implementation of Linux sound support
    extra/alsa-oss 1.0.17-1
         OSS compatibility library
    You reckon I need to install one of these?

  • Bad onboard sound solved?

    Im not sure whether this has been allready discussed but i couldnt't find anything on it. So basically the problem is that the onboard sound sounds terrible and the realtek drivers don't really do it any good.
     So yesterday i installed the newest nvidia chipset drivers (4.27) and noticed it doesn't install the sound drivers at all, even though they should support the realtek chipset we have . so at first i tried to install it manually and it still did not install the drivers, so then i manually selected the inf files from nvidia driver folder and even thou it said they are not designed for this device i ignored it and voila, my onboard is working very good with nvmixer and sounds pretty good (on par with my live 5.1 board).
      The correct inf to install is Nvidia nforce audio codec interface.

    plz try this -  (with realtek drivers) but dont change the eq or it resets something and sounds like **** again
    Paste the following into a text file and save it as ac97.reg onto desktop then double-click it then yes ok - then reboot:
    EDIT: the backslashes should be at the end of each line,  i cant get it to do it in the forum for some reason.  just go to the end of the lines and delete once.

  • XFi crackling sound solve

    Hi Guys,
    I had the same crackling sounds with my card. I bought the Cinema edition and there comes a xtreme music with this package. When i installed the drivers, my system was dam slow. the sound was crap and i could forget to play a game. Then i switched to win XP 64 and downloaded the driver for this system, gess what? The crackling stopt, games run fast and the sound is just beautiful. So switched back to win XP 32 bit. with a my new clean system i downloaded the update. and then i installed ONLY the update and my xfi runs as good under win xp (32) as it has under 64 bit. Then you can install the additional software that comes with your cd. All is running fine. But NEVER install the driver that comes with the cd. I installed the old driver and my system again (after the update). My system was slow and i had the crap sound again.
    The only thing you lose is the IR Remote Control, somehow that thing doesn't work. Because of that i installed the old driver again (as i mentioned above), the remote works then, but well you know slow system and crackling sound.
    So if anybody knows what the file is, i must install for the remote to work, plz tell me.
    PS: when this solution was already posted in the 04+ page thread regarding this issue, i apologise. But could anyone tell me a solution with the remote issue anyway

    Here's a bit of info that crackle-sufferers might find useful. There's a bit of a story behind it, but stay with me, I think it will be worth your while.
    I just tried installing an X-Fi Platinum, and had to give up. The card was simply not detected. No matter what, system would not detect, drivers would not install. I tried everything. After too many hours of effort and a long call to tech support, I gave up and tried to revert to my previous Audigy 2 card.
    Guess what? MASSIVE crackling!
    I freaked. This system had been working perfectly for months. I tried all the solutions that have been posted... moving the card, pulling all other cards, etc. Finally, I scrubbed the system... ran the driver remover, deleted every line in the registry with "X-Fi," "Audigy" or "Creative" in it, deleted the Creative folder in Program Files, etc., etc. Of course, then the Audigy card wouldn't recognize! Much more swearing, fritzing... but bottom line, it finally installed.
    Guess what? NO MORE CRACKLE!
    I knew the X-Fi software had not uninstalled fully, which was my first clue. Now, back on pure Audigy drivers (the latest version), all is well. What does that say to you? To me, it puts the blame for the crackling squarely on the X-Fi drivers. Oh, sure, there are probably other contributing factors (since not every system exhibits the problem), but if having even a remnant of those cursed X-Fi drivers installed is enough to produce hideous crackling on a previously faultless Audigy 2, what other conclusion can you draw?
    The logic seems ironclad to me. The good news: Creative COULD fix the problem, if it's just in the drivers. That stuff about the cards not recognizing... now THAT'S just evil. This is 2006 (isn't it's). That kind of annoyance went out with Win95.

  • Making Kodi/XBMC behave in xmonad (Solved)

    I have been having issues with Kodi/XBMC not behaving in xmonad.
    Kodi would show up full screen and cover ALL workspaces.  When I would set it to windowed it would stay stuck at the top of the screen, and unmoveable.
    So I used wmctl to finally move it this morning, but still would only change size to part of the screen.
    In order to see whether it was xmonad or kodi, I used fluxbox, and kodi worked just fine there.
    The problem, as it turns out, is that I needed to enable EwmhDesktops, and to add ewmhDesktopsStartup to my StartupHook.
    After that, I logged out and back in, and now Kodi is actually behaving.
    This is less of a request for help, than an effort to document how I fixed the issue in case I need it again in the future!
    Also, I have been struggling with this for quite a while, and didn't really find much info on the issue when I did a search.   Who knew that it was just an ewmh issue?  lol
