Xcelsius 2008 doesn't preview...

OK, I'm going crazy.  I've just installed Xcelsius 2008 SP1 on a Vista OS notebook.  It won't preview, either on a new blank file or a sample (nor will it export to any file type....I get the generating Swf notice for abt 5 secs and then it goes away.....nothing else).  I've checked that UAC is off, run as Administrator, checked the player security settings, and re-installed multiple times.  Any suggestions?

Hi Craig,
Have you removed the previous installation before installing it?

Xcelsius 2008 - Unable to preview changes made in design mode
I have installed Xcelsius 2008 (RTM) and also Service Pack 1 / Fix Pack 1.1.  Unfortunately, I can now not preview changes I made in design mode (but can see the change in design mode).  In addition, if I save the changes made to the Excel spreadsheet (using this as the datasource) and then exit out of the application, then go back in, the changes have not been saved?!
I have also installed Fix Pack 1.3, but the same issues occurs.
This is causing us issues as we have developed a number of dashboards that can no longer be updated.
    Please could someone advise?
    Many thanks,
    Neil.

I would recommend decomposing large sets into more manageable sets.  For instance, if you have data for a very large regional district, decompose the data into smaller sets for sub-districts.
As for a paper, I'm not sure, but the main determinant of performance is how many cells you bind to the component.  For a typical component on a typical computer, I'd recommend no more than 9000 cells.  On a weaker computer less, on a stronger computer more.

  • Xcelsius 2008 doesn't support excel links?

I'm building a dashboard with Xcelsius 2008 and my Excel sheet which I imported has a number of links to other Excel files - that is how the values are updated, from other Excel sheets. After adding a collumn graph component and setting it up appropriately, no collumns would show in preview mode. I added a speadsheet table component to see what was going on and all values are 0, that is why no collumns are showing. The values do, however, appear in the spreadsheet when in design mode as I wish they would in preview mode. I tried to export it and exporting yields the same results as preview mode.
I'm impressed because Crystal Xcelsius 4.5, which I had been using up to now, supports links in imported Excel files with no problems.
Is there any way to make Xcelsius 2008 honor the values as they should be, rather than setting all values taken from links to 0?
    Thank you for your responses.

    Hi:
       1. Do you mean, excel embeded another excel file using "Data->Import External Data->Import Data" then choose "excel file"? From my side, i try this scenairo and the chart can present the mapped data properly. (may be my model is to simiple...)
       2. For your excel links, I am not sure where the problem is, but I am suggest that, you can build your standalone excel sheet with excel mapping first, then import the excel file to Xcelsius, in this cases, we can distinguish whether the problem comes from excel feature itself or Xcelisus integration with Excel.
       3. I also think about the cases you are using, may be you have multiple individual spreadsheets, and want to embeded into one excel file which will be used in xcelsius, also, when the data change in the sub excel sheets, the main excel sheets should also be updated accordingly. (Please correct me if there is sth wrong)
But for excel links you are using, I saw some limitation:
       a) when you open the main excel sheet, the sub excel sheet will be "read only", so that user can not modify the sub sheet at the same time.
       b) when preview, or export to swf file, you can not update the excel links at run time when mapped excel file changes, there is no update option for excel links as far as i know.
So, to meet the scenario, you can use Data connection feature called "Excel XML Map":
The detail steps is similar with excel links, the differences is you are going to map xml file to excel range. (if you have already have a number spreedsheet in your hand, you can first save the spread sheet as xml format, then map the xml file to main excel). In this case, when user modify the xml file and save, you can refresh the mian excel file to get the updates at any time, also Xcelsius data connection provide connection called "Excel XML Map" so you can also refresh the maps at preview time and run time.
    Hope it helps.

  • Can't get Preview to work in Xcelsius 2008

My system crashes everytime I try to reun Preview in Xcelsius 2008.  I am running Windows XP and Office 2007.  I have installed all critical updates.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Flashpoint.  When I hit Preview the system starts to generate the SWF and then I get the very polite message - Xcelsius.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.  Meanwhile the SWF is still trying to generate.  When I "click here" to get more information I get:
    AppName:xcelsius.exe
    AppVer. 1.1.0.3
    ModName: msvcr80.dll
    ModVer: 8.0.50727.1433
    Offset:0008aa0
If I hit debug my computer goes into never never land and I have to reboot.  If I hit close then Xcelsius closes but then  Excel connection does not.  I either get the message "Problem Assesing Excel:Exiting" or "Excel cannot complete this task with available resources".  If I go to the task manager and exit Excel manually then I can reopen Xcelsius but I still can't run it.

Okay I've tried a couple of things since I posted this original question.  Starting with once again uninstalling and reinstalling Xcelsius and Flashpoint.  Based on your question I tried all the export options - it crashes everytime.  The problem must be in generating the SWF.  If I start with the blank page and blank excel it'll let me go to preview.  If I open one of your example files it'll work.  If I open any of the files I built in 4.5 it crashes.  If I just import in one of my excel files and leave the canvas blank it crashes.  Kind of suggests it's an excel problem or an interface problem.  I do notice it doesn't matter if I'm importing an 2003 .xls file, a 2007 compatible .xls file, or a 2007 .xlsx I get the same incompatibly box before it'll import.
The spreadsheet I'm wokring off from works fine in 4.5 Professional

  • Critical Help:  Xcelsius 2008 (crashes on snapshot and preview mode?)

I just upgraded to Xcelsius 2008................. everything seemed to work fine until I built my first model with Xcelsius 2008.
For some reason, I can not place the Xcelsius 2008 into "Preview" mode.......... when it goes into preview mode is leaves out data on the charts......... and when I try a snapshot back to Excel to see what is wrong............ it totally crashes.... then Xcelsius 2008 and MS Excel shut down and have issues starting up?????? I never had this problem with Professional 4.5
I am pretty familiar with MS Excel and Xcelsius (however, I do not understand why it would crash when I attempt to preview??); do you know if there is a fix or if others are having this problem?  Can you forward to an engineer??  Please, Please............ this has been a trying process....... I am questioning whether I should have really spent the $400 to upgrade.
Also, I downloaded the SP1 zip files..... what files specifically do I use?  there is 50 or more files in that folder.
Please help..........my only option is to delete Xcelsius 2008  and go back to the the old Professional version 4.5??   Thought I would check in with you...........Thanks for helping!!!!

Hi, I had the same problem. I solved it just waiting more time.
It happens when you're trying to make a snapshot of a very big excel with inside some "critical" formulas like VLOOKUP or SUMIF or COUNTIF. Are you using some of these formulas?
If your answer is YES, what I can say to you is that when you make a snapshot you'll be able to open the excel only when you'll can to exit from the snapshot...(not when the time icon disappear )
Try this way, and let me know if it's ok.

  • Not able to see Data in Xcelsius 2008

    Hi everyone,
My question is I am not able to see data in Xcelsius spreadsheet although I am able to connect to SAP BW and also able to see and select query but when I select Cross Tab Data in output Values it is not displaying in Xcelsius spreadsheet
    System Info
Xcelsius 2008 Enterprise Trial Version SP 3.0
SAP BW 7.1 SP 6 ABAP and JAVA
    Any help would be appreciated

    Hi Rashid,
When you are using the BW conenction in Xcelsius you will not see any data in the spreadsheet at design time or at preview time.
To see the data you need to go SAP > Publish, then SAP > Launch to test the dashboard in the NetWeaver Portal as that is the only place where the data can be viewed.

  • Xcelsius 2008 FP2 won't export to swf

    Hello,
I can not get Xcelsius to preview or export to swf.  The progress bar labelled "Generating swft" displays for approximately 3-5 minutes until Xcelsius.exe finally crashes and the app closes.  I'm running Xcelsius 2008 SP1 with FP2, Live Office XI R2 and Flash 10 (lastest version).  I've also looked at the Flash security as described in other forum posts and that does not appear to be the issue.
The .xlf I'm working with was successfully completed and published to Crystalreports.com and is working fine.  The problems began when two additional Live Office connections were added to allow for some additional data points in the next release of the dashboard.  The data model now contains a few hundred more rows and a few hundred forumlas causing the Excel file to increase to just under 1MB.  The total number of rows of data return in all Live Office connections combine are just over 1,000 rows.  The max # rows setting in Xcelsius is set to 2,000.  The formula cells added to the data model are fairly simple formulas that were successfully used in the data model previously (ISERROR, INDEX, MATCH).
On occasion, Xcelsius will give the message box "Your range has been reduced to the maximum rows allowed" before crashing.
Acting on this message I have removed the new Live Office connections, but the message/crashing continues.  I have now scaled back the # of Live Office connections and # of formula cells way back to a very small number.  the data model is now very small and quickly imports into Xcelsius yet the same message/crashing continues.  I have verified that the data model currently in Xcelsius is the most recent, very small version of the data model, but Xcelsius still behaves like the large 1MB data model is present.
I don't know if this is even a # rows/data model size issue or a config/bug issue.  Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
I've read the PDF on FP3, but don't see this scenario listed.  Might FP3 help?  I need to be FP3 is compatible with publishing swf files to Crystalreports.com which is a BOE XI R2 platform.

thanks for the quick advice.  so we can scale back the data to within 512 rows by splitting this into 2 dashboards.  Not ideal, but shouldl be acceptable.
The data is already pre-aggregated.  The data sources for this data model are crystal reports that are published in Crystalreports.com and refreshed nightly against a 3rd party API.  Virtually all of the formulas required in Excel are used to line up rows of data that are being pulled in from 2 seperate live office queries.  All of the required data points could not be included in a single crystal report so 2 are needed and the rows matched up in Excel using an INDEX(MATCH) formula.  We are not using any unsupported functions or VLOOKUP per the advice of an Xcelsius best practice document I located in this forum.  I'm open to any suggestions on better techniques to align related rows of data from two seperate ranges in Excel so they essentially appear as though they came from a single data source.
I am starting to lean toward the # of formulas in the data model as being the issue and have added fitlers to the live office query to cut the # of rows to only 20% of what was originally being retrieved.  The # of formulas were also reduced by the same percentage.  However, when trying to preview or export to swf, Xcelsius still gives the same message that the range was reduced to the max allowed and then crashes.  It's as if Xcelsius is still seeing the old data model.  Perhaps something is being cached that isn't clearing out?  Even a full remove and re-install of Xcelsius SP1, Live Office and FP2 has had no affect.  Maybe we need to build a new .xlf from scratch?
    thanks

    WA: WorkAround
AA: Installing QAAWS from BOE Client
PD: The Query As A Web Service (QAAWS) application has been combined with the BOE XI 3 BusinessObjects Client application. It was previously a separate application.
This means that to use BOE XI 3 QAAWS with Xcelsius 2008, you must download the BOE XI 3 BusinessObject Client from the Business Objects Support site and install it on your client machine.
WA: To install QAAWS download the BOE XI 3 BusinessObjects Client. You may or may not have access to this download based on the type of licensing agreement you have with Business Objects. Note that the BOE XI 3 BusinessObject client is about 600MB in size.
AA: Installing Xcelsius 2008 when a higher version of the Adobe Flash Player exists
PD: The Xcelsius 2008 installer will install a version of the Adobe Flash Player. If you have previously installed a higher version of the Flash player, you will get a warning message from the Xcelsius 2008 installer.
WA: You can ignore this warning message. Your newer version of the Flash Player will not be changed.
AA: Installing Xcelsius 2008 with other older BOE products.
PD: After installing Xcelsius 2008 on a machine, some other older BOE products on the same machine stop working (eg. WebI Report Server, BOE XIR2)
WA: Many BOE products share the same installer, as a result installing Xcelsius 2008 on the same machine other older products changes the default install folder to the newer BOE folder. For example with BOE XIR2 it changes the default BOE install directory to change to BOE XI 3 folder.
    C:\program files\business objects\businessobjects enterprise 11.5\" is changed to
    C:\program files\business objects\businessobjects enterprise 12\"
The workaround is to manually edit the registry and change the key folder name back to its previous name.
Use regedit to view the folder name in the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Business Objects/Enterprise/InstallRoot/Path".
Double-click on path and change the Value data. In most cases the folder name is C:\program files\business objects\businessobjects enterprise 11.5\
Note: please back up your registry before making any changes.
AA: Uninstalling Live Office XI 3 from a machine with Xcelsius 2008
PD: If you uninstall Live Office XI3 on a machine with Xcelsius 2008 also installed, the Xcelsius Keycode Expiry dialog box (License manager) pops up asking for the Xcelsius Keycode.
WA: The Xcelsius keycode must be entered again to re-enable Xcelsius.
AA: Installing Xcelsius with Office XP
PD: Currently installing Xcelsius 2008 with Office XP is not supported due to a bug. Use Office 2003 or Office 2007 instead. If Office XP must be used see the workaround.
WA: As a workaround to the issue of Xcelsius 2008 not installing with Office XP, users can manually add a registry key to enable installation. Please make a backup copy of the registry before making any changes.
    1. Go to Start > Run. Start the registry editor by entering 'regedit'.
    2. Select the folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and navigate to \Software\Microsoft\Office\
    3. Create an 11.0 folder, if it doesn't exist, by selecting Edit > New > Key from the menu.
    4. Create a subfolder called PowerPoint
    5. Create a subfolder under PowerPoint called InstallRoot
You should now have the folder structure listed below:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\PowerPoint\InstallRoot
    6. From the InstallRoot folder create a string value called "Path" by selecting Edit > New > String Value
    7. Select the newly created Path value and select Edit > Modify.
    8. Under the Value Data field enter "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\"
    9. Click OK.
    10. Exit the registry editor.
    11. Reboot your machine.
You should now be able to install Xcelsius 2008.
AA: Creating a Web Part for SharePoint Portal Server 2007
PD: The current Xcelsius Web Part installer Setup.exe does not work with SharePoint Portal Server 2007.
Note: Sharepoint Portal 2003 is supported.
WA: You can manually install the web part to use with Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2007. Microsoft does not provide a mechanism to build a Web Part installer for SharePoint 2007. For instruction on manual installation see the Xcelsius Support website. (see follow up post below)

The current Xcelsius Web Part installer Setup.exe does not work with SharePoint 2007 (Windows SharePoint Services 3.0). Here is the workaround to install Web Part in SharePoint 2007 manually.
The easiest way to install a web part in SharePoint is to add the web part assemblies to Global Assembly Cache. To do so:
    1. Download and unzip the attached Xwp.zip. Drag Xwp.dll and ICSharpCode.SharpZipLib.dll into C:\WINDOWS\assembly folder on the machine running SharePoint 2007.
    2. Open web.config file located in the root of a Windows SharePoint Service 3.0 Web Application directory with Notepad. Normally, the physical location of the default WSS 3.0 Web Application root is C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\wss\VirtualDirectories\80.
[Click here for more information on how to Find the Web Application Root|http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms474356.aspx].
    3. Insert the following <SafeControl> tag between <SafeControls> and </SafeControls>.
    <SafeControl Assembly="Xwp, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=7e58495f1a9ea430"
    Namespace="CrystalXcelsius.SharePoint.WebParts" TypeName="*" Safe="True" />
    4. In SharePoint Portal Site Home page, from Site Actions drop-down menu, go to Site Settings->Modify All Site Settings. Click Web Parts under Galleries to open Web Part Gallery Page. Click New to open New Web Parts page. Check CrystalXcelsius.SharePoint.WebParts.Container checkbox and click Populate Gallery. Once it is populated, you will be able to add Container web part to your web part page in SharePoint 2007.

  • What do I need to create Flex custom components for Xcelsius 2008 SP3?

Hello, and thanks for your time.
I have recently been roped into creating some custom components in Flex 3 for use in Xcelsius 2008 SP3.  I can create custom components in Flex, but I have no idea how to get them into Xcelsius.
I have begun my own research into everything I am going to need, but I am hoping someone out there who has done this can provide a user-friendly itemized list of all the parts that are needed to accomplish this task.  I want to make sure I do not miss anything.
Thanks for any insight you may be able to provide.
    What I have so far:
    Flex Builder 3
    Xcelsius Engage Server 5.3 (2008)
    What I think I need:
    Xcelsius 2008 component SDK
    Cheers!

  • Xcelsius 2008 won't accept keycode

I just upgrade to Xcelsius SP1 FP1.  Everything seemed to work great and I have the new version.  However, everytime I open Xcelsius it asks for my keycode.  I enter the correct keycode and the program opens and appears to be active.  However, I repeat this the next time I open Xcelsius.
I have tried the instructions for "set_registry_permissions" with no luck.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

As a workaround to the issue of Xcelsius
2008 not installing with Office XP, users can manually add a registry key to
enable installation.   Please make a backup copy of the registry before making any
    changes.
    Manual Change
    1.       Go to Start > Run.  Start the registry editor by
    entering 'regedit'.
    2.       Select the folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and navigate to
    \Software\Microsoft\Office\
    3.       Create an 11.0 folder, if it doesn't exist, by
selecting Edit > New > Key from the menu.
    4.       Create a subfolder called PowerPoint
    5.       Create a subfolder under PowerPoint called
    InstallRoot
You should now have the folder structure listed
    below:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\PowerPoint\InstallRoot
    6.       From the InstallRoot folder create a string value
called "Path" by selecting Edit > New > String Value.
    7.       Select the newly created Path value and select Edit
    > Modify.
    8.       Under the Value Data field enter "C:\Program
    Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\"
    9.       Click OK.
    10.   Exit the registry editor.
    11.   Reboot your machine.
You should now be able to install
    Xcelsius 2008.
    Please note that although
all other Office XP applications will work, Xcelsius 2008 export to Word
    produces a blank document.

  • My list of Xcelsius 2008 Problems (so far)...

Been using it for a couple of weeks now with a view to moving our solution over to this to make use of the OFFSET function which should get around the performance issues we have faced in 4.5.Build info...Xcelsius 2008 version 5.0.0.99 build 12,0,0,121Windows XP sp2, Office 2003. 1) If you upgrade a 4.5 file into 2008 the list of components available is different to if you had created a clean 2008 file u2013 backgrounds change etcu20262) Transparency of the icon object seems to have been reversed in 2008 - things that were invisible in 4.5 have now all become visible!3) Grid behaviour has changed - now if a cell is empty the visible cell is compressed which looks pretty silly.4) The option to change the text colour based on Alert status within a grid has been removed - this means indicator flags can not be hidden making grids useless for showing any sort of complex alert.5) Stability of the product is very poor when the number of components used gets high...6) The product was formerly very WYSIWYG - but when a xlf is upgraded to 2008 the fonts shown in dev time are quite different in size to those shown in preview/swf7) Any 4.5 XLF that has an image component that contains an SWF fails to upgrade - it crashes during the rendering of the components.8) Memory usage seems very high in 2008 - just opening the product with an empty xlf uses up to 200mb. When dealing with pretty complex xlf's it goes to about 350mb! Good excuse for a memory upgrade though ;)Anyone else having the instability issues?  It could well be down to the locked down environments on the machines here so I will test it on a clean VM when i get chance...On the positives the new dev environment is much better (putting aside instability mentioned above) and the expansion of supported excel functions is much appreciated :)I very much look forward to the SP in July...Cheers,jez.

    Hi,
I did not use the previous 4.5 version. We purchased Xcelsius 2008 last month, and so far we were excited of what we "thought" it could do. But the stability is extremely poor. I am trying to do a dashboard with tabs and accordion menus, line charts and texts; but it gets crazy after loading so many components and then it won't open the canvas again. I have to back up my work every 2 hours, because I lost my dashboard (and had to do it all over again) 7 times within a day!!
We are testing Xcelsius 2008 using right now the import from excel functionality. But our goal is really to connect to a reporting database or XML data from PeopleSoft. With that said, is the Xcelsius Enterprise Server or the Engage version any better on stability? Or do those crash all the time as well?
Is the SP that will be released in July applicable for all versions?
    Thank you,
    Rita
