Xchat-gnome doesn't start

Hi,
I've just made a clean install and for some reason xchat-gnome doesn't start. The window doesn't even show only the notification that the program has crashed. I've tried to compile the package localy but that didn't help.
I realize this isn't much info to work with but what info would be useful and how do I gather it?
I would be really glad if someone could help me figure this one out.

Could it have something to with what repos we are using?
I'm using current, extra, community, testing and unstable.
nuopus, NeoEx and baze, what repos are you using?
i use those 5 aswell. the only thing from unstable is gimp-devel. from testing i use
alsa-lib
alsa-utils
ipw3945
kernel26
klibc-udev
openssl
udev
and then i use self-built avahi, libburn, nss-mdns and squeeze-svn. not really any packages which i think could cause this stuff to work here.
i use the hosteurope mirrors, maybe some packages are broken on your server, though i don't expect that.

  • ..gnome doesn't start after first screen [SOLVED]

    Good morning to everybody.
Yesterday night I have solved the problem: I don't know which is the resolution among the following, but gnome today starts also if a lvm gives me an error at the prompt:
    1. I have changed inittab adding x:5:once/opt/.....gnome-session
    2. change .xinitrc with the command echo ....so I have only gnome-session in xinitrc.
    Thanks.

  • Gnome doesn't start

    Solution(s):
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Int … est_method
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=652822
(ps: I'm using an intel x3100)
This is a fresh install of arch. After the login screen(i'm using gdm) , gnome simply doesn't boot to desktop. Sometimes the desktop icons appear, but I can't do anything with them, but usually it just shows the desktop background, no bar, no nothing. If I right click somewhere in the background -> change to tty[x] -> and back, it shows a gray box with nothing in it, as it would show for example in a menu. has anyone experienced this problem? thanks

are you referring to Xorg.0.log in the /var/log ? well ... that's just enormous, but I read it and no errors were thrown.
if you are talking about the xorg.conf I modified it according to the beginners guide. I was tweaking it earlier, and if I didn't choose a DefaultDepth it shows a black background with the mouse pointer on it. if it has the DefaultDepth set to 24 it shows the background image ...

  • [solved] GDM doesn't start gnome- Thinkpad A31

I've has Arch on this old beast for about a month now, without a problem. Now when I fire it up, gnome doesn't start, and I get a message saying: GdmDisplay lasted 1.7 seconds. Does it on reboot, does it in fallback mode.
What's the fix for gdm and gnome?
I reinstalled gdm and startx worked, unlike when this problem occurred. Reinstalled gnome as a "just-in-case," insurance move. After rebooting, gnome works again.

thanks..reinstalled gnome solved it on my Thinkpad T61 too...

  • Gnome-settings-daemon sometimes doesn't start

Hey guys. I have an occasional problem where the gnome-settings-daemon doesn't start on login. If I log out and then back in it usually starts. Or, I can run it by hand and everything works fine. It's not a big deal, but it's a little annoying. Has anybody run into this or does anybody know of a log file or something I can check to see why it doesn't come up?
    Thanks

I had this problem, and I have a very fresh arch install; no old homedir, and gnome was installed at version 2.24.1 (current).
However the problem seems to have gone away once I cleared out the files in my $HOME/.config/autostart/
That directory had some .desktop files, including gnome-settings-daemon-helper.desktop (but not gnome-settings-daemon.desktop!).
Actually I find it weird that gnome-settings-daemon.desktop resides (on my system) in /etc/xdg/autostart, whereas gnome-settings-daemon-helper.desktop is in /usr/share/gnome/autostart/.
I'm not sure what the significance of any of this is, or if my entire experience (rm ~/.config/autostart/*) even makes sense. But see if it works for you
Edit: Nevermind, I still have this problem happen sporadically; the above solved nothing, it seems
Any ideas how we can debug this? How can I trace exactly what gnome-session is doing?

  • Gnome 3 doesn't start = gnome-shell crashes

Well guys, I've been playing around with arch for a while, and now I have decided to test GNOME 3 by myself. So I installed gnome and gnome-extra packages, started gdm, logged into my user and... Nothing. GDM takes forever to start the session and... Well, it doesn't start the session at all. So I thought I could open gnome in the same way I open my openbox session, so I changed my exec ck-launch-session openbox-session in .xinitrc to exec ck-launch-session gnome-session.
I run startx and... Nothing! Well, it loads the wallpaper, and then the screen goes black and it says it couldn't load the session, asks me to try again.
So I realized I'd have to test some things. Well, running gnome-shell and metacity from console just shut down the X server!
And yes, I've searched in the forums, but the solutions I found didn't work for me. If you want me to post a log, or the packages installed... I dunno.
I wasn't using the testing repos when the error start. I upgraded and the error is still the same.
Guys, I just want to test this freak!
Sorry for my bad english, and thank you already

can you post ~/.xsession-errors after you login via GDM?

  • [SOLVED][GNOME] Pulseaudio doesn't start

    Hey,
On cinnamon, pulseaudio starts on startup but with gnome3.8/3.6 pulseaudio doesn't start.
I always need to start it manually via `pulseaudio --start`.
Does someone know how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance!

ijanos wrote:Run gnome-session-properties and enable "PulseAudio Sound System"
    Thanks!
But there wasn't such an entry so I have to add by myself
If someone is curious how I added it..:
    1. Run `gnome-session-propertiers`
    2. Click on `Add`
    3. Fill in
`Name` with `PulseAudio Sound System` or something like that and
    `Command` with `start-pulseaudio-x11`
    Thats it!

  • Xfce doesn't start, gnome too

    hi there,
i'm new here and I'm also new on archlinux
I've recently bougth an Athlon 64 3000+ and I want to use a 64bit distro to run calculus programs as Octave (never used calculus programs under linux, but I presume that they are faster than other appz on win/linux 32bit)
I've installed base system through CD, and with Pacman I downloaded nvidia drivers and configured X11 by XF86Config file, i think that there are no errors here.
I read italian/english tutorials for install xfce4-svn, and with pacman I do all... but when I type startx... It seems to start but few second later:
/opt/xfce4/bin/xfce4-session: no such file or directory
    /opt/xfce4/bin/xfce4-session: Success!
waiting for X server to shut down FreefontPath: FPE "usr/share/fonts/misc"
refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing
    root@liquid /: #
    if I type xfce4-session:
/opt/xfce4/etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc: line 49: /opt/xfce4/bin/xfce4-session: No such file or directory
so I downloaded gnome and gnome-extra, added some daemons as tutorial, but when I type gnome-session:
gnome-session: error while loading shared libraries: libcairo2.so.2: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32
here there are problems with 64bit?
    where I do wrong?

  • [NOT SOLVED] Gnome will not start

I'm editing this original message by way of summing up so that anyone coming here with a similar problem will know what to expect if they read further:
I believe the reason Gnome would not start on the machine in question was that it made too many demands on the available hardware (see desm0te's comments below).
For this reason I decided to switch to LXDE as Desktop Environment which works well on the restricted hardware. I did not investigate the Gnome related problem any further.
    The original message follows:
After a successful installation of the basic command-line Arch according to the Beginner's Guide, I went on to install Gnome according to instructions in the Wiki.
I Did not want Gnome to start automatically but only when I type in the command startx.
This it does, but all I get is the nice blue "curtain" background - no black bar at top of screen with Actions, date , name etc...
    and no cursor.
One funny thing was - this afternoon while I was concentrating on another machine - the black bar suddenly appeared (apparently for no reason) showing the date and my name but with the X cursor
from the X11 environment. However as soon as I moved this cursor to the bar and clicked, both dursor and bar disappeared never to return .
I decided to redirect the stderr of startx to a file in the hope that it would give a clue as to what was wrong.

    desm0tes:
To take your points one by one:
    1. I am now quite happy with LXDE too. The problems I mentioned last night seem to have gone (???!!!) and I can just start LXDE from my user account. Maybe later, I'll realize what I was doing wrong or rather what I did to make it work... . Now I just type:
    startx
    having put:
    exec ck-launch-session startlxde
    in .xinitrc.
    2. Thanks for the tip about yaourt. I shall try that sooner or later.
    3. Well as I said - I don't understand what I was doing wrong -  which makes me feel a bit stupid and is rather annoying but looking on the bright side it's fine to be able to start-up, have a legible screen and logout successfully - which I couln't do before. I now have to figure out how to expand the contents of LXDE a bit but that's the fun of it!
LXDE starts up nicely with minimal possibilties but I can change look & feel and customize the panel settings.
    "Menu" contains:
        Accessories:
            File Manager
            Image Viewer
            LXTerminal
            Leafpad
            Xarchiver
        Internet:
            Avahi SSH Server Browser
            Avahi VNC Server Browser
        Office:
            ePDFViewer
        System Tools:
            Avahi Zerconf Browser
            Task Manager
        Preferences:
            Customize Look and Feel
            Monitor Settings
            OPenbox Configuration Maanger
            Preferred Applications
        Run
        Logout
All of these start up OK and work, on cursory examination, except the Avahi Browsers which I don't understand and which appear to do nothing as no window appears on screen.
    4. I'm not quite sure I can yet see the use of a login manager such as SLiM, since I seem to get on quite nicely without it but since I've heard it mentioned a lot I'm sure I'm just missing the point.

  • [SOLVED]Compiz Fusion doesn't start!

    Hello,
After an upgrade Compiz Fusion doesn't start. Normally I start Compiz Fusion with the command:
    fusion-icon
But now it gives on a terminal the following output:
    fusion-icon
    * Detected Session: gnome
    * execution of "which glxinfo" failed
    * Error: glxinfo not installed!
I searched with Yaourt on "glxinfo", but there is no package called "glxinfo".
    Could someone help?

    Hello,
The problem is solved. Instead of
    fusion-icon
    I use
    compiz-manager
Thanks to xaiviax for his reply.

  • Gnome-shell not starting

    I have gnome-shell 3.8.4-1. It doesn't start. Only mouse is visible :-(
When I want to run it manually from xfce4:
    gnome-shell --replace
I don't see any output, error messages. There's nothing in /var/log/Xorg.0.log related to gnome-shell.
My question is, where are any log files of the shell to see what is blocking it to start normally? If I reboot and start gnome using gnome-session it is the same. I recon something is blocking only the shell from working.

Log in to a tty, don't do this from an xserver
I had a few hiccups before I got gnome up and running, one way to check (or at least get gnome to feed some info to the logs or journalctl) is to
    1. open your ~/.xinitrc file and comment out (#) whatever current session you have currently specified as your default -- it will say "exec xfce4-session" for example.  If the uncommented exec line already says "exec gnome-session", you don't need to do this or the next step (2).
    2. add a new exec command, "exec gnome-session" in ~/.xinitrc
and 3. run startx -- this will begin the gnome-session/shell and it should boot up X, either that or you may get feedback directly to stdout, or /var/log/Xorg.Y.log, or journalctl giving you some further info on the matter.  If this works successfully without error...well then we've got some more digging to do

  • [Solved] Openoffice doesn't start

    Hi all,
suddenly my openoffice doesn't start anymore;  I see the splash screen but nothing appears after that
I've tried to reinstall it but without any luck.
The odd thing is that no error messages appear on the console, so I don't know how to resolve this issue.
    Any hint?
    ~ > pacman -Q |grep openoffice
    openoffice-base 2.3.0-3
    openoffice-it 2.3.0-1

Thank you AndyRTR for your suggestion, if I use the default gnome theme (Clearlooks) openoffice starts without
any problem; with other theme (like gummy) the problem persists.
I can only change the icon theme
