XCode blocks software update in Lion ?

hi,
i have recently upgraded to Lion and quickly thereafter also upgraded to XCode 4.1.
the problem is now that when I do a software update, during the installation phase, the installer asks to close XCode. when I close XCode, and reattempt to do the update, the installer again complains that Xcode is open. Force close does not show Xcode. Is there any piece of software running related to Xcode that is not visible, but to the installer ?

I downloaded the recent software update Mountain Lion and now my microsoft word, powerpoint, etc. are no longer supported. Why is this? What can I do?

Depending upon how extensive your library of legacy Microsoft Office data files are, you may want to consider continuing to use Microsoft Office 2004.
Microsoft Office's 2011 version is compatible with Lion and presumably either works with Mountain Lion or an update will make it so.  The problem with this approach is that Office 2011 will "convert" your earlier data files and there lies the rub!  For example, I have the need to weekly open a chart created in Excel 2004, but Excel 2011 trashes the chart in its "conversion."
So I have approached the overall problem differently.
The reason your applications do not work in Mountain Lion is that they were written for the older PowerPC CPU that all Macs used up to 2006.  When Apple made its transition to the Intel CPU, they licensed software that they included in all versions of OS X (from Tiger to Leopard and optionally, Snow Leopard) called Rosetta.
Rosetta miraculously allows PowerPC applications to work on the Intel processor transparently; you do not know it is even present.
The problem is that after 6 years of the transition, Apple's license to use the underlying software expired for OS X Lion and all version thereafter (and it is doubtful that the current owner of the software, IBM, would relicense it, even if Apple were inclined to do so).
So for those of use that need to run Lion, I have offered the option to install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels 7:
    And now Mountain Lion:
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions into Parallels 7 are here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
Snow Leopard is $29 and Parallels 7 is $79 retail (cheaper from competitive sources) and Parallels offers a 14 day free trial of Parallels 7 on their website:

  • Is anybody's finder bar keep reloading by itself? Started to happen after software update on Lion OSX

After I did a software update on Lion, the finder taskbar has been reloading itself on its own. The icons disappear and load back up again!! HELPPPP!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Software update for Lion recovery won't download

I just tried to download the software update containing lion recovery and it downloads most of the way and then stops: with a message that it cannot access something and to make sure I am connected to the internet.  I am connected to the internet, so I don't know what else to do.  I've tried three times and gotten the same response each time.
What do I need to do?
    Thanks!

  • How do you remove a third party software update on Lion?

A friend recently pulled an update to Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.1.1.  The update version is 3.6.2.  Consequently, RDP does not work when connecting to a Windows machine remotely.
NOTE:  I realize Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.1.1 is no longer supported for OSX Lion and later.  However, I use this same client successfully on a 2009 Intel MBP upgraded to Mountain Lion.  I did NOT pull this third party software update and RDP works without fail.
    Troubleshooting steps to date:
    Attempted Uninstall/reinstall of RDP.
    Failed.
My goal is to "roll back" this specific application prior to the software update without having to restore OSX.
Please help locate the specifc program files to be removed.  I'm willing to remove manually through Terminal with the right instruction.
    Thanks!

  • Software update fails lion

I have upgraded 6 macs to Lion, no major problems.
Just updated Macbook 4,1 to Lion, runs VERY slow and Software Update will not function, spinning ball.
    Tried restarts, repaired disk permissions.
Any ideas? May have to reinstall Lion...

I worked it out - the upgrade must have "found" my old config from when I had a home server setup - I simply deleted ~/Library/Managed Preferences/username/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist and ~/Library/Managed Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist and all is well

  • Software updates for Lion

    Hi,
our office used to have a server and a bunch of clients running snow leopard. the server had the software update service turned on, and all the clients happily pulled the updates from it. recently I updated the clients to Lion, and they don't find any software updates anymore since the server does not download the updates for Lion.
Is there a way to make the server download both the updates for SL and for L without updating the server to L?
    Thanks!
    A.

    ok, it seems it's possible:

  • Purchased software update (MTN Lion) did not download.

When I downloaded the software update (OSX Mountain Lion on to a MacBook Air, OSX 10.7.5) , it seemed to be going fine. When I came back later, there was no message like" download complete" or  "in progress". When I log on to I tunes, there is no purchased software available to download. When I go the the App store I see the purchase but cannot click on the button to resume the download. ( that button is blank, all the others purchased apps say things
like "resume" ,"download", or "accept" When I try to restart the whole process, the password to download is no longer valid. I called
support and they looked at all these things and couldn't help me. Can someone here help me?

Go to the App Sstore, click on Purchases, and click on the ML item and continue the download.

  • Software update before lion

i am still running snow leopard.  in software update it wants me to update itunes to 10.4 lion addition and iwork 6 to a lion addition.  Question do I go ahead and update these things now (to a lion addition) .

Well you don't have to do the update until you have installed Lion. Once you have Lion installed and it's running OK then run Software Update and it will find the updates and then you can install them. It's really your choice.

  • Software Updates after lion install?

After Installing Lion, my computer ran a software update check.  After the updates, imovie and garage band did not work.  So I tried the update again and clicked show details, it listed imovie and garage band updates, there is a check box next to them, but I can't click the check box.  So right now imovie and garage band remain broken.  Any thoughts?

try restarting the computer and the selecting software update from the apple menu, having no other apps open, and click install all, if any fail deselect them and do the other ones, restarting the and doing the ones tht failed after installing the ones that worked

  • Lost internet when did Apple software update with Lion

I no longer have a network connection with my Macbook 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 duo that I had upgraded with Lion.
I did an Apple software update after using the new OS for a few weeks only and then only intermittently
and when my computer restarted I can't connect anymore. If anyone else has had
this problem and can give me some ideas of what to try I sure would appreciate it.

    Hi John,
Pre Leopard I was able to fax from an application wirelessly (same as print) to my 7100 series Photosmart. I was able choose PhotoSmart C7100 series print (9152F) to print or C7100 series 192.x.x.x Fax to fax anything from any application. The fax driver was not completely compatible with 10.4.10 as alot of the items in the print/fax dialogue were there but not visible... looked as if it were corrupted, but it worked after you added fax recipients. I like this feature as this printer has no document feeder for faxes, so they have to be sent a page at a time which is a pain.
I still have a PhotoSmart C7100 Fax.app somewhere on my computer, but can't get it to show up in the setup utility fax/print when I try to add a printer. I've held off calling HP support as I doubt they would have a solution yet if ever. Grateful if you have any thoughts.
    Thanks,
    Carter
Just opened up Print and Fax on my MacBook 10.4.10 and the options are for "printing/faxing/sharing" These are not available in Leopard. Under options in Leopard, it's just "general/driver/supply levels"

  • Safari 5.1.2 not updating on SUS (Software Update Server) (Lion Server 10.7)

If you see the screenshot attached, you can see that the Software Update Server has downloaded Safari 5.1.2
However, the clients connecting to this software update server have Safari 5.1.1 and when I check for udpates it does not detect that the update for 5.1.2 is available.
When I click on Choose Version, it shows two versions of 5.1.2, but I'm unable to choose the other version of 5.1.2 to see if it works. (see 2nd screenshot)
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong and how to fix?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I just noticed another thread that appears to have the answer to my question above.

  • Has anyone had an issue with the Last Software Update for Lion 10.7 causing a system to be non-bootable? As of 12 June 2012?

I recently did a Software Update of OSX 10.7.4 (on June 12, 2012). It was on an iMac 27" Mid 2010.
After the Update, the system froze on a grey screen, the update failing. The mouse was still active, but the system was otherwise frozen.
The keyboard Caps Lock light would not respond. After waiting 15 minutes, I did a Power-Off by holding down the power buttone.
Upon reboot, the system gave a "grey screen of death" with a lernel Panic, noting the following was on the screen.
panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff800064ba7b): "Unable to find driver for this platform: \"ACPI'.\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1699.26.8/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp:15 04
    No safe mode.
Alt boot disk list woill not work.
Only Cmd-R to get to Revovery Boot.
I am currentluy restoring off Time Machine Backup taken earlier today.
Is this something other perople have come acress?
    Would be interested to know...

Yes. Many are having this issue and it's from Apple's Thunderbolt Update which was released yesterday to support Apple's new Thunderbolt adaptors. • Shut down after software update - OSX Lion

Hi all, is there any option in finder to run the software update with automatic shutting down the machine when the update is finished? any special trick?

Thought you could use this info about getting FireWire to work!
First, you should always Repair Permissions in Disk Utility before and after any update; I would do that now. If you installed your update with FireWire plugged in, your Mac may not recognize it anymore.
Try resetting your FireWire ports by disconnecting all FW devices, shut down your Mac and unplug it from AC power (wall socket) for 30 minutes. plug it back in and try FW.
If that did'nt work, download the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try. Yours is the 10.4.8 Combo update. Others reading, download the Combo that applies to your system.
If that still did'nt get it Zap the PRAM. While restarting Mac hold down the following key combo Command-Option-P-R. Keep holding those keys down till you hear the second start-up chime, then release.
For those of you with Macs that are not PowerBooks or iBooks, a bad internal battery can cause FireWire to not be recognized, so make sure it's good! Also, here is Apple doc.#88338 on getting FireWire to work.
    Cheers!
