Xcode from Leopard disc installed onto Snow Leopard
I have installed (because I couldn't find the other disc to hand) a leopard version of XCode onto my Snow Leopard system.
I can now not use terminal or browse secure websites, i cannot install items (empty destination select window)
Any help would be greatly appreicated.

You aren't using an Nvidia mobo, Apple is responsible for base driver to enable hardware. You then need to update graphics (and audio, plus might be one or two others).

Can not boot from Mac OS X Install Disc 1, G5, Snow Leopard
I have version 10.6.8 installed. Compter is a 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon. 6GB memory
I want to run Disk Utility and startup from the install CD that came with the computer (the grey one, disc 1, or even the retail disc Mac OS X Snow leopard, the whit one) but I CAN NOT DO IT. So frustrating.
I restart, hold down the "C" key, before the chime, after the chime, every which way, and my Mac always acts as if I am simply restarting, goes right to the login screen everytime. I tried holding down OPTION on restart to choose which to startup from, but only saw the hard drive as an option. I open System Preferences, Startup Disk and the install CD does not even show up as a choice to start from, yet the install CD shows up in the finder.
What am I doing wrong?

According to the knowledge base that model should have shipped with Tiger, 10.4.7.
Going to need some thought here, though. I was going to suggest a possible problem with the optical drive, but you say the DVD mounts on the desktop as a normal DVD would?
Nevertheless, do you have access to another Mac or an external HD with a bootable OS X on it (later than the Tiger version your Mac Pro shipped with)?
If so, try booting from the external, or from the other Mac using Firewire Target Disk mode, and using DU from one of those sources to repair the MP's internal HD, then try the disc(s) again. -
After clean install of Snow Leopard, Time Machine did not restore all files. When I try to restore these files I get "Not enough disk space" error. What do I need to do to get these important files back onto my Mac from my external hard drive??

For what the Apple Store's charge you can buy almost buy a new computer.
Just for giggles I brought my old laptop in for a drive upgrade and asked, they wanted $600 for a drive that only cost $120 at the time and it was a slow 5,400 RPM drive. The new Mac's of a similar make were going for $1000.
I did the drive replacement myself, got a faster drive of better quality for $300 instead.
Then another time I asked for a RAM upgrade from 4GB to 8GB, they wanted to charge $400 + $35 for the labor.
The same RAM is on Crucial.com for $90 and all I need is a 00 micro phillips screwdriver.
So you see what's going on here.
I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine. -
I'm trying to upgrade from 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard but my macbook keeps ejecting the disc. It started to install the first time and said it needed to restart to finish, restarted but ejected the disc. It ejects every time now. I've also installed the 10.5.8 combo update but that didn't help it. I've tried restarting the macbook with the disc in, holding c, all that. Why won't this work?!
Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

I'm transferring the iWorks applications from my Macbook Pro 3,1 with Lion to a new MBP 10,1 running Mountain Lion. I transferred the apps over using DropCopy since the older MBP doesn't have AirPlay. Applications show up but crash upon opening. This is the first install so there are no previous plist, versions or such to delete. All three crashed upon opening every time until I just had to have Keynote and purchased again - although Apple agreed to refund that purchase since my previous version quit working. Any ideas since I don't have any previous plist/versions to delete? Thanks in adavnce for any help you can offer.

Installing xcode from the snow leopard dvd
Hi all
i am a new mac user and want to learn as much as i can,i want to install xcode from the snow leopard dvd but want to make sure i do it correctly ( i know there are boxes to click and i dont want to make mistakes ).
i am hoping that someone can give me a step by step guide on how to do this.See if this helps any:

SSD Issue: Can't Install OSX-Can I use Target Mode to Install OSX Snow Leopard onto a laptop?
Cannot reinstall my OSX Snow Leopard from my original disks: 2010 MacBook Pro 7,1.
Cannot do a Recovery Install—just put in a solid state drive, and have to do a clean install, cannot clone old OS off the old hard drive.
Can I make my tower/desktop computer work somehow, I have a .dmg Snow Leopard Installation file on my tower. I'm out of options; I've tried to do a recovery download of Yosemite and usb startup thumb drive. Nothing is working: crashing, stopping short of full installation.
I'm just trying to get any operating system to install on the MacBook Pro. Nothing seems to work.
-the old hard drive had issues that couldn't be resolved, seemed like software.
-swapped it out with ssd drive, had made backup of all files.
-tried to startup with installation disks/ original osx snow leopard disk. Failed, wouldn't complete
-tried to do recovery download installation via internet, cmd-r, with Yosemite but that seems like a long shot. Just kept stalling, so it seems like this model cannot support that os without first having the original os?
-made a thumb drive an installation of osx 10.6.8
-nothing is workingSince you provide no information regarding what has happened other than it didn't work, how can we help you? I can only give you the whole process:
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the SSD's entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X. You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. You can now log onto the App Store with your Apple ID. Go to your Purchases page and re-download the last version of OS X that you purchased and/or downloaded prior to the release of Yosemite. -
I have a hdd from a late 2009 mbp. I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion. Now I want to upgrade to a ssd. Do I need to purchase a new copy of mountain lion to go on my new ssd? If I don't, then what is the procedure to transfer mountain lion with my 4 user accounts onto the new ssd from the hdd?
I'm confused on if I can use the recovery hd on a thumb drive to install mountain lion on my ssd. Will it be pheasible with so many OS X upgrades? And then how do I get my user accounts onto the ssd from the hdd. Do I use migration assistant? Do I need to make a time machine backup first? Should I use something called Carbon Clone or something like that?
Thanks for readingIf you have a cable that connects and external HDD to the MBP, it will do. If it is something like this, an enclosure will not be needed for the swap:
An enclosure allows you to use your old HDD for storage or backup purposes. The cable will not.
Here are instructions as to how the swap can be performed using DISK UTITY. Substitute You cable for the enclosure in same:
INSTALLING A NEW HDD IN A MBP
1. Make certain that you have backed up all of your important data.
2. You will need a HDD enclosure. One with a USB connection will do. A 9 pin Firewire is better.
3. Install your new drive in the enclosure and connect it to your MBP.
4. Open DISK UTILITY>ERASE. From the left hand column drag the new drive into the 'Name' field. Make sure that the format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'. Click on the 'Erase' button.
5. Click on the 'Restore' button (on top). Drag the old drive into the 'Source' field and the new drive into the 'Destination' field. Click on the 'Restore' button on the bottom right hand corner.
Depending upon the amount of data you are transferring, this may take a couple hours or more. A Firewire will speed up the transfer. This will result in both drives having identical information on them.
6. After the data transfer has completed, you may swap the drives. Start the MBP and you have finished the installation. The initial boot may take a bit longer than you are accustomed to, but that is normal.
7. When you are satisfied that the new hard drive if functioning properly, you can erase the old drive and use it for any needs that you may have.

I had this imac 27" two years back(leopard 10.5.8) and no problem was encountered so far! (thanks 4that),i always made an update as far to snow leopard 10.6.8. Unfortunately when i did some application /downloading,the system was off and when i turn it On the logo of an apple only came.So what i did is to start all over again,now i am two years old back with Leo-10.5.8,My problem is i cannot install my snow leopard,it reads that i have to clean tha disc which i did and thru utility disc.Any help please and i really appreciate to every1 helping me to solve the problem.I will keep in touch.

My problem is i cannot re-install my SNOW LEOPARD that i purchased from retail store..proceeded to install in my imac but everytime it ends with 'FAILED-pls clean the disc" i did the cleaning but still the same,:installed failed!-The installer could not copy the necessary support file",i tried booting from the disc holding C down but no luck at all. Clean Install from Leopard to Snow Leopard.
My girlfriend's laptop currently has Leopard on it. I want to install Snow Leopard on it for her. I have never installed OS X but I have Windows before. I'm assuming it will give me the option for a clean install and that is what I want to do. But if I do that, will it ask me for the Leopard disc? I ask because she does not know where her disc is. Another situation, what if I completely format her harddrive prior to installing Snow Leopard. If I buy the $29.00 version, will I be able to install it without the Leopard disc?The Snow Leopard installer is designed to install over the existing system without changing applications, data or preferences.
To do a clean install you need to carry out an erase from Disk Utility on the install disc.
If you do wipe the drive for a clean install, you'll lose all data and all the bundled software that came with the Mac. That is, the iLife apps (iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iWeb, GarageBand) and a few smaller but useful apps.
That software is on the second disc of the installer set that came with the Mac.
If you have an external HD you can clone the existing system to it, then erase the internal, install Snow and then use the setup assistant to transfer data and apps back as required. That should be done immediately after first boot into the new OS.
Note that the external will need to be formatted the same as the internal, i.e. GUID partition map and Mac OS Extended (journalled) file system.
Regardless of which way you choose to do it, it's worth trying to find or replace those original Leopard discs. Apart from having the software to hand, they also contain Apple Hardware Test for that model. If she can't find them they can be got for a small fee by calling AppleCare with the serial no. of the Mac.
But if she still has the original box, it might be worth having a look in there; the discs are in a small white box with the Quick start manual and warranty information. -
How do I load Leopard from a disc image of the install DVD?
Hi. I've made a disc image of my Leopard install DVD using Disk Utility and have saved it to a partitioned external HDD. On another partition on the same drive is a bootable SuperDuper backup of my machine.
How do you get the machine to boot from the DVD disc image? The disc image mounts, but when I click re-start it simply restarts from the current startup disk and I can not work out how to get it to restart from the disc image in the same way it would from the disc itself.

SimonFair enough question Kurt. I'm just thinking ahead to deal with a possible crisis as sometimes I work in fairly remote areas of Asia. My current superdrive will no longer burn disks but is still managing to read them, but if this facility too fails when I'm in the middle of nowhere and it also becomes necessary to be able reinstall the OS it would be very handy to have it on a drive. I'm also keen to carry as little kit as possible so getting a working disk image onto the external HDD that I carry would also remove the need to lug the install disks with me everywhere too. I suppose I could carry an additional external optical drive for this contingency but much easier if its possible from a drive.
So there is method in my madness, at least I think so! Trouble is I'm having no success in making it work thus far.

XCODE 3.2 INSTALL ON SNOW LEOPARD FAILED.
I have just upgraded my Mac Pro 8-Core computer with the new Apple RAID card. I have two 1 TB hard drives created in a mirror RAID 1 with two 500 GB volumes.
Snow Leopard installed just fine on the new RAID set. I have green lights on all raid components as shown by the RAID Utility.
I tried to install XCODE 3.2 off the Snow Leopard install DVD (five pack version) and it acts like it is installing the package until you are down to the final 1 minute of the install and then comes up with a window stating "The Installation Failed". I don't know what the issue is.
I then decided to download XCODE version 3.1.4 off the Apple website, and that package installed successfully without any problems. I then decided to go back to the install DVD and install the "other optional software packages" and of the packages that I installed they installed just fine.
Is there some work around to the XCODE 3.2 install?

ALL WORKS FINE NOW.
WHAT I HAD TO DO.
1) INSTALL THE OLD OPERATING SYSTEM (INSTALL DISCS THAT CAME WITH THE COMPUTER) ON TO MY NEWLY CREATED RAID DRIVES.
2) PATCH THE OPERATING SYSTEM UP TO CURRENT PATCH LEVELS.
3) INSTALLED THE OLD XCODE THAT IS ON THE ORIGINAL INSTALL CD'S.
4) INSTALL THE NEW SNOW LEOPARD OPERATING SYSTEM.
5) INSTALL XCODE 3.2 PACKAGE INCLUDED WITH THE SNOW LEOPARD CD.
6) ALL SHOULD WORK FINE.
I SUSPECT THAT IN THE PACKAGE INSTALL ROUTINE THE INSTALL CHECKSUM DID NOT CONFIRM A VALID INSTALL OF SNOW LEOPARD OVER THE ORIGINAL COMPUTER OPERATING SYSTEM.
THIS WAS TIME CONSUMING BUT EVERY STEP PRODUCED A "BIG GREEN CHECK MARK" CONFIRMING THE INSTALLS WORKED CORRECTLY.
I NOW ALSO HAVE WINDOWS XP RUNNING UNDER PARALLELS DESKTOP 4.0 FOR MAC RUNNING CORRECTLY ALSO. -
Snow Leopard Update. I bought the updated but my computer - a MacBook Pro - rejects the disc befoe anything appears on the desktop. I am trying tp upgrade from Leopard to Lion. Does anyone know why this might be happening?

Next, you must realize that your Rosetta PPC based programs will not operate under Lion, likely you will have to buy all new programs.
If you machine is dated, a lot of the trackpad gesture features you won't have.
Check the source of all your third party sofftware and hardware drivers for scanners, all-in-one's and the like to make sure they work or there are updates, or upgrades available and how much.

IDEALLY, it's best to backup files and then "fresh install" Snow Leopard clean, then upgrade to Lion.
Also you should make a option bootable clone of Snow Leopard on a external drive, this will allow you to return if something doesn't work.
