Xcode no longer free?

I tried to download Xcode today, and was told 'access denied'. (I only have the free ADC subscription level.) Looks like there's a new mac developer program, along the lines of the iOS developer program, that requires a $99 tax. Has Apple decided to tap users of Xcode for additional funds, much like Microsoft charges its developers? Xcode is still a steal at $99 per year, but I find this disconcerting.

I'm downloading xcode3.2.5_and_ios_sdk_4.2final.dmg right now from
http://developer.apple.com/devcenter/mac/index.action
I'm just a member of the free program. The downloads section of the iOS Dev Center was empty for me so I switched over to the Mac Dev Center's main page where there are active links for the free downloads including the About document.

  • Xcode 4 - No Longer Free?

In order to download Xcode 4, one must be either an iOS or Mac Developer program member, i.e., pay $99 for one or $198 for both, or pay $4.99 to the App Store and download it there.
Is Xcode no longer free? If it is no longer free, what RSS feed or forum should I subscribe to in order to not miss this kind of news?

    Heya, KT.
Yes, Xcode has been included, for free, with purchases of new Macs or the latest version of OS X. Again, I wonder if that will be the case in the future.
Also, Apple has, for a number of years now, allowed anyone who wanted to download Xcode from the Developer site do just that, for free. So, the fact that they are now charging for Xcode is a significant change in their policy. I think it is only natural to wonder why they are changing their policy and what they hope to accomplish by it.
And yes, it is true that it takes money to make money. I think that's what the accountants call a capital investment. It's also true that consumers, and businesses, have no use for a manufacturer's computers or operating system if there are no games, productivity apps, office software programs, utility apps of various descriptions and the like to run on that manufacturer's hardware and OS.
Of course, Apple knows this very well, which is why, in the past, they offered Xcode for free--to encourage as many people as possible to develop software for the Mac and OS X, and more recently, for iPad and iPod touch. However, that was when Apple was running a distant second to Microsoft. Now that Apple's market capitalization exceeds that of Microsoft, perhaps their strategy is taking a different path.
All of this begs my original question. When did Apple announce that they had decided to charge for Xcode? Or, was there an announcement at all? If there was, what was the venue for the announcement? I subscribe to several Apple RSS feeds, including 'Apple Hot News' and 'Apple Press Releases' and I saw no mention of it.

  • Why are messages are no longer free

Messages to one of my friends are no longer free as they were.  I have checked that she is logged into iTunes and her iCloud accounts.  What more needs to be done to be able to exchange free messages?

She needs the Messages application. Another alternative is an AIM application. You would need an AIM account on your Messages.

  • Carbon Copy Cloner no longer free ):

ok guys i just found out the CCC is no longer free. Can someone tell me another alternative to back up my hd, or where i can download it again?
    Thanks.

The following is from: Carbon Copy Cloner's Transition to a Commercial Product
Can I continue using the older version that is "donationware"?
Yes, absolutely. If you are currently using CCC and have not donated in the past, you are welcome to continue using any version up to and including 3.4.7 as long as you like without purchasing a license. Note, however, that previous versions of CCC are not qualified against Mountain Lion and we are no longer developing older versions of CCC. In addition, we offer limited support on a case-by-case basis. Choose "Update CCC..." from the Carbon Copy Cloner menu to see options for disabling the CCC software update checks.
You can download previous versions of CCC on our Downloads page.
If I donated for CCC in the past, will I have to purchase the new version?
No. To express our appreciation to all of the people who have sent a verifiable donation to Bombich Software prior to July 24, 2012, we will grant a registration code for CCC 3.5. If you are a previous donor and see a message about a 30-day trial, you can retrieve your registration code here.

I want to assure that Xcode 4.1(Free Version) and PhoneGap(1.1.0) works fine with Mac OS x Lion. Thank you.

I experience the same. IMac 27', bought just 6 weeks ago (2011), then updated from SL to Lion and now the fun begins. Crashes, crashes, crashes.... Repaired volume yesterday, repaired access rights, now even in safe mode it crashes after 2-3 mins and I am in endless loop of boot-crash-boot-..., need to pull the plug.
Brand new hardware, literally unused ( some photos, nothing more), 1.700 €.... Got an iPhone, an iPad as well but I can't tell you how disappointed I am now! As someone said before, I bought an iMac to use it and not read kernel logs, repair volumes, search for help for days....
    Thoughts?

  • Why is Adobe reader no longer free on my Kindle

Why can I no longer open documents in Adobe reader without paying a monthly subscription of more than £7 which is tidiculous

There is no subscription needed to read PDF files. You may be trying to use one of the conversion functions in Adobe Reader, which are an add-on. This can also happen if you try to do something like open a Word document in Adobe Reader.

  • Skype WIFI no longer free - being charged even tho...

Purchased SP2 8/256 Dec 2013. Exchanged the Skype premium account voucher that comes with it end of January which gives free 12 months Skype Wifi.

  • I can't download Xcode. how long is the system offline for?

am I even going to the correct link? how can I download Xcode 4.6?

Why not grab Xcode 4.6.3 from the Mac App Store?

  • I am trying to backup some free books I got and downloaded onto my Ipod touch.  Now I cannot get it to sync onto my computer.  Can anyone help me? I would hate to lose them as they are no longer free.

There seems to only be an option to transfer FROM my computer but not TO my computer from my device.
    Thanks.

Overdrive media are not iTunes purchases so they do not transfer with:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
Overdive media are copy protected so you can only read them via Overdrive. I do not understand what you mean by free books and are now paid. Overdrive are typically books for a public library.
You can try looking on your iPod via a third-party program like PhoneView, Touch copy or the free program iFunBox

  • Installed OS X Mavericks Now Pages, Keynote, and Numbers is not longer free

I just purchased a refurbished Macbook pro with retina display on sunday and I recieved it yesterday, I went into the app store and pages, numbers, and keynote were all free before I upgraded my system to Mavericks. After the update the programs are all 19.99 now. Any ideas on what I should do? Thanks in advance

Did you download the apps before upgrading to Mavericks ??
Which OS X was installed when you purchased this Mac?

  • IWork & iLife no longer free after formating

My new macbook air does come with iWork & iLife (Mavericks). After I formated and install a fresh copy of mavericks, iWork & iLife have to be downloaded. The problem is I have to pay for it. How is that so? It was supposed to be free am I right?

Apple removed iWork from all existing Macs I believe. If you do buy a new one, they would most likely already contain iWork for you. You should've bought it before upgrading to Yosemite.
Thought I'm not sure about this question, you can still try to reinstall Mavericks again.
