Xcode prevents iMac from waking up?

I'm trying to troubleshoot a lock-up of my mac during a wake-up.   9 times out of 10 it will wake up to a greyish black screen.   The other times, the content of the screen is visible but the mouse moves but nothing else responds.   The mouse typically will float around the screen but does not respond to wake anything up.   I've tried the key combinations to kill the front task (CMD-SHIFT-ALT-ESC) for 3 seconds but it doesn't do anything.   The only way I can recover is to power cycle the iMac.
The problem seems to be more prevalent (or corresponding) to when Xcode/IOSSimulator is running in the foreground/background.   When you are working on coding, you don't want to be shutting down the app every time you walk away from the computer.   I can't say this is definitely the association but there is a strong coincidence of me noticing this problem when I am using it.
Is there any way to determine what is locked up definitively in the logs after the power cycle?.  I have taken a look at diagnostic info but nothing pops out for me.
I'm getting worried that I'm going to start corrupting my hard drive by hard power cycling it every day (or multiple times a day).  I've attached my Etrecheck dump to see if there is anything relevant in there.   All my drivers, etc.. are up to date and all software is current.

  • How to stop my Time Machine external hard drive preventing iMac from sleeping?

I have a late 2012 iMac, and have discovered that sometimes (I haven't noticed a pattern of when it doesn/doesn't happen) the computer will immediately wake up after I set it to Sleep (Apple Menu>Sleep). Through elimination I have found that it is the the USB 3.0 external hard drive I use as a Time Machine back-up that is the culprit; unplugging it then allows the computer to sleep. If I unplug it, then plug it back in later on, this normally solves the problem for a while, but not forever. This same Hard Drive didn't cause the wake problem on my previous '08 iMac.
A big issue is that when the machine immediately wakes from sleep, the display stays off (until I move the mouse) - this is good from a power saving point of view, but means I don't know if/when the machine is immediately waking from sleep (I have to listen to the fan when setting it to Sleep mode to hear if it has actually woken back up).
I've searched the forums, but can't find another poster with the same problem as myself. Can anyone advise a course for me to pursue to prevent this from happening?
    Thanks. Jamie

Hi Frank. Nope, I'm still having the same symptoms; the plugged in external drive (TIme Machine) will wake the machine up a couple of seconds after it winding down when put to into sleep mode. Ejecting the drive and then sleeping the machine works. After plugging it in again to do a Time machine backup, it will allow the computer to sleep soundly for the first few sessions (eg a few days of sleeping, waking, sleeping, waking, etc), but then it will then suddenly start preventing it from sleeping again after a while.
It seems I'm fortunate in my case that the display stays dark (or off?) when the machine has been woken from sleep, but this was actually preventing me from knowing the machine wasn't in fact asleep for quite some time; I only eventually cottoned on because there wasn't any delay when 'waking' my machine (which there normally is). I would then have to carefully listen to the spinning fans to know if in fact it had gone to sleep or not.
So, to summarise, unfortunately no, I haven't solved this yet. If anyone else has a solution, please let us know?
Also, I've noticed occasionally after waking that there is a relatively quiet 'crackle' sound (kind of electrical sounding) from the bottom-right area of the machine. This goes on every so often for about 30mins. I see this is also an issue with other people's late 2012 iMacs, but I've not seen if anyone has a solution to it?

  • External hard drive with Time Machine prevents IMac from Booting

I run Time Machine without partitions on a G-Tech external hard drive.
My iMac OS X 10.5.4 won't boot unless I first power off the hard drive. I then have to power on the hard drive after the iMac is on to see the hard drive image load on the desktop.
    Any ideas?

TimeMachine is designed to perform one full backup when it is first connected to your computer and from then on back up only the files you add or edit. Opening the TimeMachine drive's backup folder from the Finder is basically a no-no. Access TimeMachine via the TimeMachine application.
Assuming you frequently plug the TimeMachine drive in and let it backup and assuming the newer files are on the computer - they are being backed up and TimeMachine will be able to restore the entire drive if/when it is needed.
Just keep these things in mind. TimeMachine runs every hour (when it is connected to your computer - so be sure to connect it at least once a day and let it do a backup) and backs up new and edited files. It is guaranteed to keep any file that is currently on your computer. If you delete a file from your computer TimeMachine may delete it if extra space is needed. The drive you use for TimeMachine really shouldn't be used for any other purpose.

  • TimeMachine prevents iMac from shutting down?

I am a proud owner of the new 27" iMac with a new 1TB Time Machine. No problem there.
However, when the Time Machine is backing up and I choose shut down (from the shut down menu) TM should stop and resume the interrupted backup next time I start up. Instead shut down proceeds normally until I get the blank screen with a small spinning black wheel (the last thing we see before a Mac turns itself off), and then it stays there - forever. Twice I came in the next morning and found the spinning wheel still going on. Other times I give up after 2-3 minutes and force a shut down. Shut down is problem free if I have stopped the back up to the Time Capsule prior to shut down.
I have a slow internet connection and so I am wondering if that is the problem. Any ideas?

TimeMachine sometimes slows down the iMac. For example, when saving ("save as") in Photoshop CS4 it takes *for ever* - that is 40 seconds - for the Finder to come up with the save-as-window. This only happens while backing up in TimeMachine is active. If there is no back up occuring there is no delay. The delay is in Finder; I have not noticed delays within CS4 applications; nevertheless it rather slows down the workflow.
I don't recall seeing that reported very often. When OSX puts up that save window, it has to list all the places you could possibly put something, and checking the network for the status of all such locations, while a backup is busily using the WIFI connection, takes longer.
Try the things in #D2 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
I have experimented with putting the iMac to sleep instead of shutting down, and this appears to work without problems.

  • AMD driver is preventing laptop from waking up from sleep and very slow boot.

    Laptop: Pavilion 15-n003tx
    OS:win 8.1(64-bit)
    Product number:E6G12PA
After installing the 14.4 driver for AMD Radeon Mobility HD 8670m graphic card,my laptop takes  around 93 seconds to boot.
Also, the laptop does not wake up from sleep after closing the lid.I have tried various settings but none seemed to help, even if I change sleep to Never for every setting.
The only way to avoid this is by uninstalling the catalyst driver, then everything works just fine.I have given the laptop to the service center, but they were unable to resolve the issue.Any suggestions?

    Hey Vaibhav15,
I spent some time researching the video dxgkrnl fatal_error error and I'm seeing the majority of people have only been able to fix this with a system restore to before the issue started, or a full system recovery (reinstalling Windows).
Try the restore first as it will not delete your personal files. If that doesn't work you will need to backup and attempt the recovery. This should fix the BSOD error on startup.
For sleep mode, go into the Power Options of the notebook and make sure the notebook is set to sleep when the lid is closed: (Also, does it sleep when you tell it to sleep from the Charms Bar?)
    Windows Key + X.
    Power Options.
Click Choose what happens when the lid is closed.
Change the dropdown to make sure the notebook is set to go to sleep and not just turn off the display.
Let me know if that helps!
Please click the "Kudos, Thumbs Up" at the bottom of this post if you want to say "Thanks" for helping!
Please click "Accept as Solution" if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

  • Can iMac not waking from sleep be caused be a corrupt file

I have had my 27" iMac from July of 2011 (running Montain Lion, 8 GB RAM, 2TB hardrive, 3.4 GHz,Intel i7) for over a year and a half and ever since I bought it, it has had a problem waking from sleep.  I can hear the computer running, but when I click the mouse, keyboard, or power button, it stays asleep and I am forced to do a hard shut down.  Apple has been trying to fix the issue, but to no success.  They have replaced the hard drive, logic board, usb ports, RAM, mouse and keyboard, but it still happens.  They finally threw in the towel and are replacing the machine.  They offered to transfer all of our files (jpgs, mp3s, docs, videos, etc), but one thought occurred to me... what if the sleep issue is caused by a corrupt file?  I highly doubt that is the case, but wonder if any of the experts out here would know better than I.
If we didin't have the data transfered, we would just keep it on an external hard drive instead.  But, I would assume that it wouldn't matter if the files were on internal vs. external because either way, the computer would access the files.  That being the case, if the sleep issue was caused by a corrupt file, the computer would still access it on the external and the sleep issue would resurface.
    So, 2 questions:
Can a corrupt file cause the sleep issue?
If it is true that a corrupt file can cause the sleep issue, would it matter if the corrupt file was accessed from an external drive vs. internal drive?
    Thanks so much!
    Chris

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • I have a contact I no longer use and have deleted it from Contacts on my iMac and iPad, but it still keeps appearing in the To: box when I enter a similar contac, obote the iMac and iPad. How do I completely delete it to prevent this from happening? Thank

I have a email address I no longer use and want, so have deleted it from my address book on my iMac and iPad. It kept reappearing when I started to type a similar email address, so I was advised to delete it by going to Mail on the iMac...  Mail > Window > Previous Recipients... and Delete from there... which worked, and it now no longer appears in the To: box when typing a similar email address in Mail on my iMac.
However, even though I have deleted the same contact/email address on my iPad, it still appears when typing a similar email address in Mail on the iPad. How do I perform a similar action as I did on my iMac, to prevent it from reappearing?
    Hope someone can help.
    Thanks, Simon.
    On the iMac..

The only way that I currently know of to remove old and invalid email addresses on the iPad is to restore back to factory defaults, which I assume that you won't want to do. You could try leaving feedback for Apple, and maybe in a future update we'll be able to edit them : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

  • Is there any way to prevent opening the lid from waking my MBP?

    Hi,
I have a problem with my screen on my MBP such that when the computer is asleep in its case the lid often comes ajar, wakes the computer, and drains the battery. Is there any way to prevent the lid opening from waking the computer?
Thanks for any ideas on how to fix this.

Option 3: Open Applications > Terminal and type sudo pmset lidwake 0 (you'll be prompted to enter your admin password). To revert to wake on lid open, use the Terminal command sudo pmset lidwake 1.

I awoke the other night and happened to notice my iMac keeps waking from sleep every 2 minutes from 2:00 in the morning. The screen doesn't come on, I hear the harddrive power up for a little while then stop, 2 minutes later it happens again.
I don't have "Wake for Network Access" on, and have tried turning off "Allow Bluetooth devices", I have also done a Virus Scan
I have been able to link the wake attempts to RTC (Alarm) - Real Time Clock. And I have also looked in the console although I don't really understand what is being logged, please see below.
I have OSX 10.10 (Yosemite) installed on a mid 2010 iMac, although I can't say how long this has been happening.
    Any help is greatly appreciated
    Regards
    Byron

  • Is it possible to prevent the Print Dialog from waking printer?

    Hi all,
Although I have a printer attached to my iMac, most of the time I just use the Print Dialog to 'Save as PDF' rather than to actually print. However, as soon as I hit cmd-P the printer is woken up, even though I never use it. Is there an option somewhere that will tell OSX to only wake the printer if I actually send the document to the printer?
    thanks,
    d

    Hi there,
I think you could create a dummy IP printer, using Generic Postscript for the driver, and set it as your default printer. Then when you print to pdf from your app, having this dummy printer selected may stop the USB physical printer from waking.
To create the dummy, open Print & Fax and click + to add. Select IP and LPD for the protocol. Enter an IP address of 10.0.1.50, leave the queue name blank, change the Name to Dummy and select Generic Postscript in the Print Using menu. Click Add to complete the queue creation.
Now set this printer as the default and try printing. Hopefully this stops the real printer from waking.
One last note. Just remember to change the printer in the Print dialog when you do need to print on paper.

Something software related prevented me from being able to boot up my iMAC. The remedy was to wipe the computer of all soft wear and re-inatall everything via my time capsule. All good there.. but now I cannot open Ai and a box stating"Licensing for this product has stopped working" and to reference error code 150:30. How do I get my Ai to open?

Run the cleaner tool and reinstall it properly.
