Xcompmgr in LXDE[SOLVED]

I want my screenlets in LXDE to be transparent, and I also want a compositor for AWN, but when I try to use xcompmgr I run into problems. When I run xcompmgr it makes all of my screenlets appear in windows instead of desktop widgets, and it doesn't make them transparent. Also, I tried adding xcompmgr -n to .xinitrc, and my computer wouldn't load the DE.

I did have the "&", but I had xcompmgr loading before startlxde in .xinitrc, so I moved the command to start lxde above xcompmgr, and now it works. Transparency and all works great now.

  • [LXDE] (solved) wicd-client is autostarted, but from where ?

    Hi,
I have a strange problem (not really a problem, but this is strange).
Every time I start my computer, wicd-client starts too (which is what I want), but I don't remember where I decided to autostart wicd-client.
I have no display manager, but X starts automatically from /etc/inittab (with startx), and I use the desktop manager LXDE.
    I have looked in ~/.xinitrc, ~/.config/autostart, ~/.config/lxsession and ~/.config/openbox, and found nothing.
Do you know of another place where I could have asked wicd-client to start ?
    Thank you

[ disregard what was previously here, I can't read ]
pacman -Ql wicd | grep desktop
shows that wicd installs /etc/xdg/autostart/wicd-tray.desktop and /usr/share/applications/wicd.desktop .

  • [Solved] LXDE missing window borders (or decoratioins, widget?)

    Hello,
The LXDE runs fine on my newly built arch for a couple of days, and then I must have done something (e.g. upgraded or uninstalled some packages) and now I can still log into LXDE by using slim login manager or startx command, but none of the applications will have the window borders and I am not able to move the application window around or minimize/resize the window.
    Here is my .xinitrc file
    [sgeuser@sge00 ~]$ cat .xinitrc
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    # exec gnome-session
    # exec startkde
    # exec startxfce4
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice
    FontPath /usr/share/fonts/100dpi
    xset -dpms
    xset s off
    exec /usr/bin/startlxde
Here is my systemd journal since reboot:

    Thanks. The problem is solved.
Both openbox and lxsession were installed. The only thing missing was the missing libsvg library. Here is the relevant entries in /var/log/pacman.log (when I installed the libsvg package just now)
    # egrep -ri svg /var/log/pacman.log
    [2013-09-02 14:52] [PACMAN] Running 'pacman --color auto -S extra/librsvg'
    [2013-09-02 14:52] [PACMAN] installed librsvg (1:2.37.0-1)
so somehow it wasn't needed on a working lxde since 08/28 when the system was installed, and right after 3.10.10 kernel upgrade(Sat., 8/31), it is required to have the windows manager working properly. 3.10.10 linux kernel change log from https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel … og-3.10.10 did not return anything relevant.
Anyway thanks for the input and I'm glad that the problem was solved quickly.

  • [Solved] lxde and pcmanfm missing options

Solved, read here: http://blog.lxde.org/?p=737 (both intentionally missing)
After last night's pcmanfm update (0.5.2-1  to 0.9.7-1), my pcmanfm is missing the tree option in the left panel (and judging from other posts, other things as well that I haven't needed yet).
Also my lxde now does not have a background nor is the entire tab available anymore in the "Desktop Settings" option (or anywhere anymore).  It is a totally different "Preferences" window only giving General, Display, Volume Management, Advanced tabs.
I have regularly switched between ratpoison and lxde|openbox.  I use "exec ck-launch-session lxde" in my ~/.xinitrc.  I also tried "exec startlxde" which didn't help.  I manually startx.
I have searched (and asked in #archlinux but nobody answered) and found these threads that touched on similar problems with pcmanfm but nothing about my issues that I could see.  I also looked in lxde forums but no luck.

anamesa wrote:Though there is some solution in one of the mentioned threads, I preferred to downgrade to previous version 0.5.2-1 and put pcmanfm in IgnorePkg in /etc/pacman.conf. I'm a bit lazy you see. Now everything is back to normal. I'll keep it that way till it breaks the dependencies.  If the pcmanfm developer claims it is intentional, then so be it. In the meantime I'll think of a way to get rid of pcmanfm alltogether and to replace it with another means of handling transparency & desktop bg in my arch setup.
feh (an image viewer allows you to set backgrounds. I have pcmanfm installed, but I rarely use it since most times I just use cli commands to browse thru files. There are other light and fast file managers on the wiki if you were looking to switch.
    Common File Managers
    Lightweight File Managers
Also there are others that Archers have developed which you will find in the Community Contributions sub-forum. Ranger and qtfm come to mind

  • [Solved] LXDE Install Fails Due To Disabled Key

    When I run:
    # pacman -S lxde
    I get this error:
error: lxdm: key "Daniel Wallace <his email address>" is disabled
    Later I get this:
error: failed to commit transaction (invalid or corrupted package)
I'm assuming the second error is due to the first.
I did some reading and the way I understand it is that I don't need to do anything for this specific key since all five of the master keys have signed it. Do I understand correctly?
I've already done an update and I tried "pacman-key --refresh-keys" which did not help. Hopefully that wasn't a terrible idea. Also, I removed lxde from the cache and tried again with continued failure.
*marked as solved and edited out an email address.

Can I somehow copy the key database from one Arch system to another?
    EDIT:
    Ok, forget it.
Finally the following command sequence worked but only after deleting/moving the directory /etc/pacman.d/gnupg as suggested by the wiki page of pacman-key:
    pacman-key --init
    pacman-key --populate
    pacman-key --refresh-keys

  • [SOLVED] xcompmgr and nvidia geforce 6800 LE

    Hello everybody,
I am installing arch on my main desktop on which I have a nvidia 6800 LE. I used wiki and almost everything works fine. However I am used to have xcompmgr running with awesome wm. But my xorg configuration for my geforce 6800 LE should be not correct because it's not working at all.
I observed that both modules freetype and type1 that are highlighted in wiki are not found on my computer ...
You can find my xorg here :

  • [SOLVED]LXDE pacman errors

    Hi,
Sorry new to arch linux / these forums, cant find anyting about the errors I am having.
I'm getting some errors in pacman whilst trying to install LXDE.  I'm installing it in a fresh arch linux install in VirtualBox, it is fully up to date.
It can not retrieve two gtk packages files, in particular, gtk2-2.24.8-1x86-64.pkg.tar.xz, gtk-update-icon-cache-2.24.8-1x86-64.pkg.tar.xz
And the pacman exits as it has not for all the packages.
    My mirrors are:
    * mirror.lividpenguin.com
    * archlinux.positive-internet.com
My pacman.conf has [core] [extra] [community] enabled.
A little bit stuck, anyone else having / have these issues or can anyone point me in the right direction to solve?

Those packages arrived  23: 14 on 16th, when did you last try a pacman -Suy? You could download them manually then "pacman -U" the package.

  • [SOLVED] lxde+openbox+urxvt = can't get a transparent terminal

I've been trying to get urxvt fully transparent and maximized every spare time i have after work. But now i'm just wasting time, since it won't work no matter what. My first attempt was to read the wiki: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Openbox (urxvt) that didn't work at all for me, then I resorted to a quick search on the forum, found various links: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=64898 & http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=64459 with peeps having the same issues like I did, or almost. But alas that didn't work either.
I can move around the terminal urxvt window/border, but it's not transparent, and it's NOT covering my entire screen like it's suppose to.
    Any ideas?

Hello brisbin33, cheers for the prompt reply!
    are you running xcompmgr?
yes, I use it for shades around my borders
do you have composite enabled in xorg.conf?
I don't use xorg.conf at all, I rely completly on input hotplugging through xorg-server and HAL, btw I was under the impression xorg-server (input hotplugging) completly ignores your xorg.conf if it's set to use HAL as autodection?
please post the relevant snippets you're trying in .config/openbox/rc.xml and any info you've placed in .Xdefaults
    My .config/openbox/lxde-rc.xml:

EDIT: I'm using lxde on my asus eeepc900, here's something I just read on the archlinux wiki, so once more having an xorg.conf is useless if you rely on input-hotplugging right? (wiki claims xorg ignores the xorg.conf if it's relying completly on HAL)
    Intel drivers
The new Intel driver, xf86-video-intel, comes with compositing enabled by default. It's configured to use the newer EXA acceleration method, but the default build options can result in very slugish performance. In these cases, adding these options to the "Device" section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf can improve the situation dramatically:
    Option "AccelMethod" "exa"
    Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
    Option "ExaNoComposite" "false"

  • [Solved] xcompmgr -- Drag events kill XOrg rendering (xcompmgr crash)

To fix a problem I was having with direct draw applications glitching/ghosting https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 1#p1384701 I implemented the fix I documented.
Now, direct draw drag events kill all rendering in XOrg. It seems xcompmgr just silently dies and I have to kill and restart XOrg to get it working again. A simple example of this is dragging an image in Firefox. Input still works and the window manager is fine (I can still spawn terminals with my hotkeys). Killing xcompmgr doesn't fix the problem nor does restarting it.
Anyone have any suggestions beyond switching to compiz/nouveau?

So I've managed to solve my problem.
Thanks anonymous_user, you set me on the right path with the suggestion of compton. I checked its man page and it has abolished the -a flag. Didn't know why. Turns out, it's buggy and prone to these crashes.
I'll edit my solution in my linked post noting what I've done.
Thanks a million to you again anonymous_user, and you too headkase! You two are what make these forums amazing.

  • Is there a DE independent program like lxde-logout? [solved]

The title says pretty much everything. I am setting up e16.
Using e16, thunar, parcellite, gvolwheel and wbar I have a wonderful desktop. The only complain is I cannot reboot or turn off with a specific program like lxde-logout.
I know I can just use sudo to allow users of the group power to use halt and reboot... but it seems so ancient...
So, is there a program like lxde-logout that detects if the user can turn off or reboot the machine and allows to make it with ease?
    Thanks
Solved! Yes there is at least oblogout and exitx-polkit-git.

  • [SOLVED] xcompmgr, feh and openbox don't play nice

    Hey,
I started using Openbox with xcompmgr a few days ago. I start xcompmgr in .xinitrc, then a few apps later Openbox (see .xinitrc file). Problem is, xcompmgr paints my background gray. Calling feh later doesn't paint a new background image. I read in the wiki that the problem is with xcompmgr and the solution is to use hsetroot (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xco … Openbox.29).  This doesn't solve the problem for me. All it does is paint my background before xcompmgr repaints it gray. If it matters, my login manager's SLIM and this is my .xinitrc:
    #!/bin/sh
    # ~/.xinitrc
    # Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
    hsetroot -solid "#000066"
    xcompmgr -cfF && feh --bg-scale /home/gal/Pictures/fiji.JPG &
    tint2 &
    tilda &
    gnome-power-manager &
    xscreensaver --no-splash &
    sleep 5
    feh --bg-scale /home/gal/Pictures/fiji.JPG &
    conky -b &
    exec ck-launch-session openbox-session
    # exec startkde
    # exec startxfce4
    # ...or the Window Manager of your choice
Any comments about how to sole this problems are welcome.
EDIT: The sleep 5 statement was to try to make feh work by giving it some brake. Sadly it did not help.

I use similar settings to yours, but:
    - they are in ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh
    - no "hsetroot"
    - nitrogen, instead of feh
Besides: why did you place xcompmgr and feh on the same line? Did you try with two different lines, one for each command?

  • [SOLVED] SLIM not boot to LXDE

    Hello,
I have installed LXDE and I am able to load it via startx. (so I have .xinitrc properly configured [exec startlxde]).
I Have just installed slim and put it as daemon into rc.conf. Slim shows me his screen after sturtup, but I am not able to login with my user/name - it only blinks and shows slim screen again.
I thought there could be problem with file .xinitrc permissions so I have set it to 777, but it didn't help. (I am not sure - is it sufficient to have this file only in home directory of that user?)
    Any idea?

rhadesan wrote:It helps to remove pcmanfm. I do not understand what is the problem with tis package?
Well, the desktop in LXDE is managed by pcmanfm.. So, if pcmanfm crashes, maybe that causes problems.. Anyway, as noted in the other thread, this could be a bug in pcmanfm. We will have to wait for a fix in pcmanfm.. For now, either uninstall pcmanfm and use SLiM or else use a different DM/WM or login manager
If your problem is solved, please add "[SOLVED]" to the subject

  • [SOLVED] LXDE / Evolution: setting default browser?

    Hello,
Recently I switched to LXDE coming from Gnome, and clicking an URL in an email doesn't open my browser anymore.
I searched gconf-editor to set my default browser app, and found some references to epiphany (that I changed to firefox), but that doesn't seem to have fixed it.
    Anyone?

Army wrote:I think this has to be set up in your email program! I use claws-mail and there is an option for this. I think evolution is too much integrated into gnome to be able to  do such a setting in the program itself, maybe it looks into Gnome's defaults, which you cannot set without the configuration tools of gnome.
    My recommendations:
Use another mail programm, i.e. claws-mail, which I like pretty much.
Install Gnome (minimal installation), do the settings and uninstall it afterwards or let it on the machine, if it doesn't disturb you.
Yes, it looks like I should switch to another emailprogram, but at the moment I'm tied with hands and feet to evolution, since I'm using webcalendars and LDAP-contacts. Thunderbird + lightning is coming along nicely, but it cannot write to LDAP and claws-mail has calendar-support, but it is slow and the GUI to it is very arcane.
The gnome-settings are stored IIRC in gconf, and I cannot find the right entries
    Zl.
/EDIT: thought about it and did a new search in gconf-editor and found out that I still had some references to a test-setup for firefox 3.0beta. This thread can be closed as it is solved. THX for your answers!
