XDCam HD422 to prores confusion

I'm editing a project shot on a Sony F3, outputting to a Nanoflash at 180mbs.
When I brought it into FCP to check the details in the browser the codec was "XDCAM HD422 1080p25 (50 Mb/s). This is the first time I've cut with footage shot in this codec, and my plan was to convert to Prores as usual.
What I'm confused about is a; why does the browser say the XDCAM footage is 50 Mb/s when it was shot at 180 MB/s and b; when I do convert the footage to Prores, the resulting file is only 2/3rd the size of the original HDCAM file. Shouldn't it be bigger?
I'm holding off going any further on the project to I can be sure I have the correct workflow.
Any help appreciated.
cheers

Hi David, thanks for your suggestion.
I'm almsot certain that's not the case in this instance, as the information in the browser for other codecs/calculations matches up usualy. Also a 1:8 ratio doesn't reflect the difference I'm experiencing, which is closer to 1:3.2.
Cheers

  • XDCAM HD422 support in CS5?

I have some XDCAM HD422 footage I would like to edit in AE. I am currently on CS4 which doesn't import this format. I see that PP CS5 does, but what about AE CS5?

    Hi teetime17,
were you able to work with HD422 50/1080/25p (or 30p) footage in cs5? With this I do not only mean whether you were finally able to import the files. What I mean is whether it was practical to work with HD422 footage in cs5 (without downframing or other reduction in quality). Sorry to reopen this threat after so many years, but I need to work with HD422 50/1080/30p footage and I am trying to build a workstation on a tight budget.
    Thanks!

  • Need to edit/convert XDCAM HD422 in .mov wrapper on PC

From what I've been able to deduce, wrapping XDCAM HD422 in a mov only works on a Mac. I need to be able to edit or convert it in Premiere Pro on a PC. I have a mac laptop available if that needs to be what converts, though I'd rather a solution on the PC (the laptop is old).
I've seen links to Calibrated{Q} XD Decode, but can anyone confirm this works? I'd rather a free solution since there are so many free convertors like MPEG Streamclip and ffmpeg.
    Codec: XDCAM HD422 1080p24 (50 Mb/s)
    Wrapper: .mov
Premiere Pro = "Codec missing or unavailable."
    Thanks.

Very interesting. That explains a lot.
But AME definitely does not read it. The Source preview pane displays a black area instead of the video--not only that, but it displays the square in 4:3 instead of 16:9 (the video ratio), meaning it's definitely not reading the footage. If I run it through and convert it, it transcodes the audio but not the video (it just turns out black).
Premiere reads it just fine, audio and video. If I add the footage to a timeline and export, I can queue it into AME and it will export without problems.
All is up to date through CC.
As a side note, the footage gives a yellow bar when added to the timeline (something I've yet to see editing any raw footage added in Premiere), so it will take longer to edit/render.

  • Help! XDCAM HD422 audio all broken!

    Hi,
I'm trying to import XDCAM HD422 footage (1080p @ 25fps 50mb/s; audio 48Hz @ 16-bit) into FCP 7 using Sony's XDCAM Transfer app. I am using a 2008 MacBookPro and the footage was given to me on an external hard drive. I imported the footage using XDCAM Transfer and the clips play perfectly fine in QT or Finder viewer, but when I import to Final Cut the audio is all chopped up and runs shorter than the clip.
The sequence setting is set to the XDCAM HD422 1080@25 setting, with audio matching the source files (48Hz @ 16-bit) but it is still broken. Even before placing the clips in the timeline, they don't even work from the FCP browser viewer. Does anybody know a solution to this problem? I have looked for hours online and can't find any solution. Please help!
    Thank you.

Why aren't you using log and transfer from WITHIN fcp?  You'll need to load the sony plug in.

  • XDCAM HD422 support

Have anyone try to put MXF's from Sony PDW-700 into Premiere? ^_^
When we recive native support of XDCAM HD422? :)

    Hi friend,
    I have tried this.
I saw that you can IMPORT XDCAM HD MXF's directly to your projects. However, exporting to XDCAM HD MXF's is only possible using third-party plug-ins like the mainconcept HD 4.
I have a lot of questions about working with XDCAM HD in Premiere Pro and working with playout systems.

  • XDCAM HD422 1080i/50 (50 mbps)

I cannot find export codec  XDCAM HD422 1080i/50 (50 mbps) (trial version) it maybe present in the full registered version?

Hello. I have just recorded XDCAM 422 1080i 50 and I'm trying to find the best pobbible export settings - this is what I am using currently
I am having trouble with exporting this setting. Fast moving images are ghosty  in places. ie moving hands.
I am exporting it as H.246
    HD 1080i 25
And I set to "Match Source"
and I use Render at Maximum Depth and use Maximum Render quality.
Am i using the correct settings?
ps I don't think any shutter was used on the day so could this be the reason?
    Kind Regards

  • XDCAM HD422 playback stutterings and blacks out

When I import XDCAM 422HD clips into my PC based Pr6.01 or 5.5 machine, they will play once on the timeline, and strangely,  after that, they flash black or don't play at all.  I don't have the problem with EX files (I know they are a different codec).  But from what I have read, most editors can play the HD422 files in PPro without a hassle.  Our Machine is pretty fast with raided SSDs and Geforce 570 GFX. Thought it could be memory maybe (running 12 Gig)  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated
    Steve

Just an addendum to this post... PPro 6.01 won't recognise the MXF files at all... importer reports "generic error".  However if a change the extension to mpg, they import OK.  What the??

  • What would be the correct workflow to go from XDCAM to Apple Prores?

I would expect I would need to export to Raw DV via the clip browser, and take that to Apple Prores via Compressor. Is this correct? What about the audio?
    Thanks in advance.

Uhm...no. Going from XDCAM (HD) to DV would be the worse thing to do. Not sure what you mean by RAW DV, but DV is 720x480, highly compressed SD. The lowest form of SD next to S-VHS. DOn't to that to your HD.
Get the Log and Transfer plugin from SONY and use LOG AND TRANSFER to convert the footage to ProRes directly from the card or card dumps.

  • Color shift (gamma?) between XDCAM Ex and PROres

    Hi,
We have edited a show in Apple XDCAM EX in 23,98 HD. We did a QT movie of that sequence into the native codec that we edit with (Apple XDCAM EX).
Into quicktime, or even in compressor, we re-export ta video into Apple Pro Res and we are experiencing a big color shift between both codec.
Somedoby have an idea on that?
    Thank you!
    Nicolas

There's a know shift in the gamut between the two recording methods because of the compression scheme.
If you search the posts here and on the Cow, you'll find other references to it.
You might want to consider working in ProRes all the way through. It's a good way to even out all the differences between source footage and act as a neutral Digital Intermediary. The nice thing is that it's tuned to run on the machines and runs very efficiently. It's been a big help here when I've had mixed footage, or have to go out to all the different formats and uses that I do. I get no shifting at all, even between proxy and HQ. So I can do all my editing and effects in lightweight proxy and then conform to the more space demanding 422 or HQ.

  • Downconvert XDCAM EX to ProRes SD - best quality method

    Hello
We shoot XDCAM EX (1920x1080p), and we produce SD Prores HQ 422 files (720x576i). These are further transcoded to MPEG2 10mbit for TV transmission.
I believe that the conversion from HD to SD in Premiere is causing an excessive quality drop, mainly by reducing detail and increasing softness.
Does anyone have any experience of this kind of conversion, if so I'd be interested in hearing about other methods/tweaks.
The Prores format is not a requirement - we could move to a different mezzanine format. The MPEG2 file format is a requirement for the time being, although we are looking at h.264 mp4 for this (same bitrate).
    Thanks in advance

I use the HD2SD method to produce DVD Mpeg2 files (do a forum search for HD2SD) you may be able to modify this for non dvd files.

  • No timecode when transcoding 4K XDCAM to 4K ProRes

I just transcoded some 4K XDCAM clips to 4K ProRes 422 and then imported to Premiere Pro. All of the ProRes clips now have timecode that starts at 00.00.00.00. If I import the clips into premiere from the original XDCAM source the proper timecode is there. I'm using the latest, as of 6/7/14 CC versions of both AME and PPro. The XDCAM sources have all the original MXF container material in their proper folders. I cannot find any controls in AME that have to do with timecode and assume that AME is always passing the timecode information through during encoding, but it's not working in my setup. Help ? Thanks.

    Hello,
Since you posted the question, we released AME CC 2014.  Have you tried this new version?  Do you still see the same problem?

  • XDCAM HD422 1080i/50

Several TV-stations require you to deliver this format. On a Mac, you'd have it in a Quicktime, I guess. But since I'm on Windows, could someone please link to a preset for Adobe Media Encoder? If not, list all the correct parameters?

Well this is what i have been sending to Channel ONE in Australia.
Sorry I'm using a mac but worth a shot
    Format:Quicktime
    Preset: HD 1080i 25.................
Video Codec: Apple Pro Ress 422 (HQ)
    Field Order: Pregressive
Tick BOX - Render at Maximum Depth
Tick Box - Use Maximum Render Quality.
Att; I was using upper field for weeks and getting a ghost effect on fast movements because everywhere i read i was told to use upper field. By accident I used Progressive and now i have a great picture and i can sleep at night.

  • PP 2014 Project Manager not Trimming Clips

Project Manager pretty straight forward however the ProRes clips are not being trimmed. I tried both 24 and 0 (yes radio buttons were selected) but when I reopened the project the clips were full clips.
    thoughts?

I'm having the exact same issue now and it seems to be related to what types of format Premiere supports for trimming.
My project consists of the following file formats:
    XAVC 100Mbit MXF
    XDCAM HD422 .mov
    ProRes 422 .mov
If I remove XDCAM and XAVC from the project, Project Manager trims the clips, but if XAVC and XDCAM is in the project the files doesn't trim.
Adobe Help-page mentions this: "Some formats, such as Long GOP based media files, cannot trim media, or add handles." But it doesn't state what these "some formats" are. XDCAM is Long GOP, but XAVC 100MBit is Intra and shouldn't be affected.

  • How to transfer XDCAM from EX1 using ProRes 422

Ok, I'm starting to think a little above my pay-grade here, but:
My understanding is that I can directly import XDCAM files shot on a Sony EX1 by placing the SxS card in my MBP express card slot and using Sony's transfer application. However, I want to transcode to ProRes 422 because the timeline will contain P2 footage from an HVX200.
Does the ProRes 422 step require the EX1 camera itself to be connected via firewire, or can I transcode using just the cards? If I transfer using the native codec but edit in a ProRes 422 timeline, can I edit both the P2 and XDCAM footage just as well as if they had been transcoded on transfer?
    Any advice welcome. Tnx!

There is no direct file based XDCAM EX to ProRes ingest method in FCP. You can import the footage directly into FCP using Sony's XDCAM Transfer app or through FCP's own Log and Transfer interface when using Sony's PDZK-LT1 FCP Log and Transfer plugin. Either way, its just a rewrap of the native media into an FCP friendly Quicktime wrapper.
If you want to transcode to ProRes for edit then you need to either transcode the imported clips using FCP's Media Manager > Recompress option (or some other post capture transcode method/software eg Compressor, MPEG Streamclip etc) or capture the media directly as ProRes using the camera's baseband output together with a suitable I/O device attached to your Mac.
Can you edit the XDCAM footage directly in a ProRes timeline? Absolutely ... obviously it will not be as render free / fluid as if you were editing in a native timeline, but depending on the power of you Mac it should offer no real issue. I know many who always edit with their camera native media such as XDCAM HD/EX and HDV directly in a ProRes timeline as a matter of course.
    Hope it helps
    Andy
