XDCam into 5.1.4

Hi,
I am working in FCP 5.1 and have a project that was shot on XDCam discs in SD DVCam 16:9.
By downloading the XDCam Transfer 2.7.1 patch, and setting the iLink pref on my deck as FAM (izzat "file access mode?) I have been able in the past to import files into FCP. However, after a long break from using XDCam I've returned to it and the disc is not showing up on the desktop, so I can't import.
The wierd thing is, when I turn the deck off, FCP yells at me about device removal. I've been to disk utility and don't see it there.
Any thoughts?

I think it is time you upgrade to FCS2, I believe the reason FC yells at you is the RS-422 deck control protocol is the same today as it was back in the day when you first purchased FC 5.1.4, it hasn't changed while new version of FC and their updates have added support for new codecs like XD cam.
Good Luck

  • XDCAM into SD DV sequence - quality dreadful.

I'm cutting elements together into an NTSC DV-rez timeline, some of which are full rez 1080p30 material, some of which are uncompressed HD. Such elements when put into the timeline and rendered look absolutely awful - far softer and noisier than the adjacent NTSC DV material. What approach should I take to improve the quality of these elements in my cut? Is this simply a function of the XDCAM/IMX codec again, which I have recently learned to hate?

Max, do you have any I/O hardware? I'm thinking you
should be working in a better codec than DV and then
creating a DV master only as a last step, or either
capture directly to the DV codec from source. Is
that a possible workflow for you?
Nope, sorry. I'd love to be working in a better codec than DV, but that's a no go, as large portion of this piece is DV-rez. And the system I'm on has no additional video cards.
At present, what methods are you using to transcode to DV?
So far, I've tried cutting it into the DV timeline in FCP and rendering, and also transcoding via Quicktime Pro to DV first before importing. One is as bad as the other - essentially the same results.
I was cutting last week on an Avid Xpress Pro, and despite really hating being back on Avid (happens less and less these days thankfully), I was delighted with how well Avid handles multiple codecs on the timeline - no rendering at all. I had DV, HDV, HDCAM, DVCPRO HD and SDI all on the same timeline, without a problem. There's one gold star to Avid for that anyway!

  • Export prefedrences for XDcam in Log and Transfer

I have the XDcam pluggin for Final Cut. But when importing my footage I would like to export (or transfer) as Pro Res. can anyone tell me if this can be done?
    Thanks
    Jeff

    Hi -
As far as I know, there is not a way to make the conversion within the import process itself.
You can operate the Sony XDCam Transfer as a stand alone app outside of Final Cut (it lives in your app folder) to import the XDCam footage to a designated folder (which you set in Preferences). Then do the conversion to the Pro Res flavor of your choice with Compressor. Once complete, import the Pro Res versions of the XDCam into your FCP project.
As a side note: You can work with native XDCam footage on a Pro Res timeline, or native XDCam footage on an XDCam timeline with the rendering set to render in Pro Res. In either case you will need to render the timeline when you output it.
    Hope this helps.

  • 5.5 trial: zero denominator error message

First, from within PP 5.5 trial version, I tried to dynamically link an XDCAM clip between with AE 5.5 trial version.  The footage in AE was interpretted as audio only, when it is 1080p 25. ) I have a simple MP4 comp in AE5.
The same interpretation happens if I do a straight import of the XDCAM into AE5.5.
Opening AE5 and importing works as expected, so I saved the AE5 comp and opened it is AE5.5 trial.  Once it converts the project to 5.5, I receive the error message:  zero denominator converting ratio demoninators. (17::18).  Once I have clicked through several of these messages, they return when I attempt to scrub the timeline.
Can anyone give me a steering, please, or is this a trial limitation?

Thanks Mylenium.  I've tried just about everything, and have reverted back to Production Premium CS5 for the time being.
Shame, as this would have been the perfect project to put 5.5 through its paces.

  • Can no longer import mp4 (XDCAM) footage into CS4

Hopefully somebody will be able to help me with this!
I am trying to import some Sony EX1 (mp4) footage into Premiere CS4, but am getting the following error message:
“file import failure: Error message – the importer reported a generic error”
I have done this process on many occasions over the last year or so and experienced no problems whatsover.
But for some reason I am no longer able to import the mp4 files...or even access these file types in historic projects!
I have checked the footage in the Sony clip browser in it seems fine, and plays fine when opened with a VLC player, so am a bit stumped to what the problem could be.
(For info, I am using a PC with 8gb RAM and a Quadro CX. I did have After Effects installed a month ago back and switched to VISTA. All Adobe updates have been installed, and I have sufficient memory)
Thanks in advance for any pointers or assistance

Of course using Premiere CS3 I have the problem of the audio constantly cutting out on the XDCAM MP4 files, so I really could do with a solution to this problem in CS4 asap - can anyone else help?
It is definitely a new problem for me, which almost certainly revolves around the impoter process. It did not affect my editing until 2-3 months ago but suddenly now renders CS4 Premiere more or less useless, on both on my laptop and my main PC.
It is possible that the problem only affects projects where one of the XDCAM files is very long and/or was originally saved across two separate cards at the time of recording. In which case it may not be a new problem, simply one I had not encountered before because I'd notg used any such long files.

  • How to Get XDCAM Transfer files into FCP scratch disk locations

    Hi
I'm new to XDCAM transfer. I have XDCAM Browser and Transfer, latest versions. I have successfully imported into FCP, but I was surprised to see the footage stored in a default 'Movies' location. I thought, okay, I'll just change the import location in the XDCAM Transfer preferences to the FCP scratch disk location but then I realized that since I have multiple scratch disk locations I would be defeating the way FCP works, which is to to automatically go to the location with the room for the files.
I didn't have this problem with Panasonic P2.
Is there a way to import XDCAM files into FCP and have it go to the scratch disk locations already established in FCP?
    Thank you,
    Phil

    Hi Phil
Although XDCAM Transfer can be launched from within FCP (using the File > Import > Sony XDCAM.. command) the app itself is standalone and works outside of the control of FCP. It has no means of discovering and using the Capture Scratch location defined within FCP (because Apple do not provide any means for a third party app to do so).
The Panasonic P2 format is (can be) transfered directly using FCP's own Log and Transfer interface and so works wholly within FCP hence the target directory for imports honors the defined Capture Scratch location.
If you are working with the XDCAM EX series of camera's then you can use Sony's FCP Log and Transfer plugin (PDZK - LT1) instead of XDCAM Transfer to import your clips, and so achieve the functionality you are looking for. Although you lose some of the flexibility/functionality of the standalone XDCAM Transfer app (PDZK-P1) the benefit of handling everything directly with FCP's own interface might be preferable for you.
    Hope it helps

  • Xdcam cs4 project into final cut ?

is it possible to export xdcam work  out of cs4 into final cut pro and see all the clips and edits ive done in cs4 on final cut timeline ?

    In CS5, possibly.  In CS4, I don't think so.

  • Cannot import sony xdcam hd mxf files into CS6

OK.  Try skipping that.  Put the disk into a Blu-ray drive and just use Windows Explorer to copy everything over.
We have the same camera and disc drive. You can't put the discs into a standard bluray drive as they have are in a cartridge. The disc reader he's using is the appropriate way to import that media.
I'm not sure what's going on for you but I'm unable to replicate your problem. Put XDCAM disc into drive, copy entire contents to a folder, then in media browser right click on that folder (not the subfolders) and click import. I get a bin named whatever the folder was called, with all my clips inside. I'm on CS6.0.2 on a mac.

  • Export XDCAM clips into Final Cut

I'm working on a project where all clips were supplied in XDCAM format. I exported using XDCAM EX clip browser so that now they are in a program called XDCAM transfer with an mxf extension. Now I need to get them into Final Cut(7) but can't figure out how. Can anyone help .
    Jeff

In Final Cut Pro, choose File > Import > Sony XDCAM...
That will cause the XDCAM Transfer app to open with hooks into your FCP project. Use XDCAM Transfer to log your selects and press the Import button at lower right. The clips will be imported to the Import Location and appear in your project's Browser window in FCP.
Note that the Import Location for clips ingested through XDCAM Transfer is not linked to the Capture Scratch location you choose in FCP's System Settings. XDCAM Transfer has its own set of application preferences, so you'll want to select an appropriate import location by switching to tehe XDCAM Transfer application and choosing Preferences from the application menu ... the location is set under the Import tab of that Preferences window.
In future, if you prefer, you can bring the XDCAM EX footage in directly from the original media / folder structure using FCP's own Log and Transfer interface, you just need to install the free Log and Transfer plugin available from Sony's website. Note that this does not work with XDCAM HD / MXF wrapped media, only XDCAM EX / MP4 media.

  • Can't transfer/import XDCAM files from harddrive into FCP

hi, i filmed all of my footage using an XDCAM and had to return the cams immediately. so i copied all the clips from the capture media to an external hard drive (everything within the BPAV folder) one to one. i also downloaded and installed the XDCAM EX Clip Browser on my MacBook Pro and can view the clips.
the problem i have is that i can't import the clips into FCP. the "Import> SONY XDCAM..." feature in FCP won't allow me to access these files. the BPAV folder remains greyed out.
what do i need to do to get the clips into FCP? is there a different plugin i need? the clip browser won't let me export the clips to any other format. i'm stumped. i run FCP computer on my G5 PPC Quad core. the file browser only runs on Intel macs. so i use my MBP to view the clips but that's all i can do.
can someone please help me out ?
    many thx!
    fj

in the spirit of armano'os last post and FYI: i picked up the cams on short notice, never used them before and there were no instructions. the ppl just told me to copy the files over to my HD, since i had to return the cams immediately and had no time to hook up the cams to FCP.
the 'mistake' i seem to have made was that i looked at the data structure and saw that the clips always ended up in the CLPR folder within each BPAV folder - each in its own folder in that fiolder and with XML and data files - so i copied directly to that one BPAV folder i copied from the first capture media i moved to my hard drive instead of copying the entire BPAV folder from each capture media. however i tested the import immediately to see if it actually played back the files in the XDCAM clip browser and they did.
i assumed all was fine with this method and it would save me a lot of duplicate BPAV folders... hopefully though this isn't the end.

  • Transfering XDCAM files into FCE

Is it possible to transfer SONY XDCAM files into FCE, or do you need to have FCP?

The XDCAM Quicktime components are only licensed with Final Cut Pro. It's my understanding that FCE doesn't handle native HD files but transcodes them into the Apple Intermediate Codec.

  • Editing XDCam sequence into an Apple ProRes sequence

When I copy a XDCam sequence and inert it into an Apple ProRes sequence it plays out of sync. Why?

No, you're absolutely correct to use HQ. Just checking.
The Red footage is has 4:4:4 subsampling, so HQ's the way to go.
If you generally use Recompress All Frames on Export then you probably know that it's pointless to render your timeline before an Export, since your Render files won't be accessed. Unless you need to work in that same sequence with the timecode - but, you could just use your exported master for that.
I know the recompress all frames option is probably overkill for a sequence with only one effect, but I'm also thinking about drive space. With those huge Red files, your render files have to be eating up quite a lot of it.
So, I'm suggesting that you don't need to render this sequence before exporting. Just export the unrendered sequence with Recompress All Frames. That saves you the space the render files would be taking up.

  • Premiere CS5 loses video reference when playing into an XDcam deck

I have CS5 on a new Toshiba Qosimo Computer with a NVIDIA GeForce 360m Card with 1 GB of ram.  I am trying to play out a standard def NTSC 16:9 timeline and record it in an XDCam deck.  If the clip is longer than 12 minutes the deck reports reference errors (at random points some before 12 minutes) and the record goes to black for a few seconds.
I submitted this to Adobe, which at one time had great customer technical support but unfortunately all I got back this time was someone named Indronil who said the following:  I would like to inform that GFORCE GTS 360M graphics card is not in the support list of Adobe Premiere Pro cs5 & its not compatible with Adobe Premiere pro cs5 due to which its not working properly ,therefore we will not be able to support un-supported products and have to withdraw the case.
From that cryptic and grammatically twisted sentence I take it that the graphics card is not one of only about ten listed by Adobe and Indronil is guessing it is not working properly or I would not be having a problem.   I also take it that Adobe has completely punted on customer service.  Pity. They once were so good.
So the card is probably working properly or else I wouldn't be able to play out anything of any length.  So seeing as we are all on our own now, I would greatly appreciate any ideas on what could be the cause of this problem.
    Thanks,
    Harvey

    Todd,
Good, I am glad Adobe has not punted on customer service because it is one of my last heroes in that area.  My case number is Case #0181788080.  I have upgraded to 5.0.2 but am still having the problem.  The machine has two 500gb drives and I am using a 1TB external drive connected by e-sata.   I have tried putting the projects on either the second internal drive or the external drive and the problem is the same.  If the timeline is more than 10 minutes long, I get loss of video reference errors within about a minute of recording.  If it is under ten minutes the record goes fine, which makes me wonder if it is a cache somewhere that needs to be bigger.
I'm not pushing the system very hard, this is 16:9 standard def.  I have CS4 on an older XP machine and it plays into the XDCam deck without a problem, kind of ruling out the deck.  Sony suggested that I change the IEEE1394 card to legacy which I did but the problem remains.  Luckily most of my stuff is under 10 minutes, and the longer clips, I am either editing on CS4 or converting the CS5 to an AVI and then playing it out on the CS4 machine, but of course I would like to end that as soon as possible.
    Thanks for your help,

  • How to combine XDCAM clips into one big file for import?

Hi, I'm not sure if this is a basic question or just not possible... I'm on location and have to rush edit. I've not worked with xdcam before. Usually I would import all of the media in low-res (one tape at a time), see what I want, then re-import that in high-res.
In xdcam, when I import, I import EVERY single shot as a separate file. I can set ins and outs and just import what I want, but this is laborious to open and close every shot to see if I want it, then mark ins and outs.
Isn't it somehow possible to import everything on the xcdcam disk as ONE single file as you would a "tape" so you can quickly screen it, see what you want, then go back to the individual clips on your xdcam disk and import those in high-res? This would be so much faster!
Many thanks for your help... am in a bind and in a rush!

Ok thanks... that seems to work. It won't actually work for the way we're editing, but in theory had we synced up our workflow from the start...
Re. something new... well I hear what you're saying but I have changed formats several times, used 4 different nlediting platforms so far and not complained. This is the only one that seems much harder especially when you're working with different editors in different countries under tight time pressure.
The brief user guide that I read (and our tutorial instructor at work) told us to import all the little clips and said nothing of combining them... I'm not sure how people could actually work that way and manage dozens of disks' worth of individual shots as files. It would take years to cut an item... and usually we have about 45 minutes to an hour.

  • Is there Anyway to Import XDCAM EX1 videos into CS6 without Conversion ?

    Hello Guys,
I have to edit some footage which was shot on XDCAM EX1. Im using CS6 on an IMac. Whenever i try to  import the footage i get the error " the file has no audio or video stream". So i went to google for the solution. I came across a few posts (all of them were exactly the same) which said that I have to convert the footage. The problem with this is that no matter how expensive or professional the converter is, there will be some loss in quality. Please advice me what should I do ? Quality is the highest priority for me. I do have FCP X as well which picks up the EX 1 footage but it does not recognize the footage from my Sony FS100 ( i need to edit footage from both these cameras in one timeline and sequence ). Other than this i do have windows  available as well with Adobe Premiere cs4,5,5.5. and 6.

Copy the BPAV directory and all subdirectories from the SxS card to a harddisk. Open the BPAV directory in the Media Browser and import the clips from there. The EX1 creates MPEG2 clips in a MP4 wrapper.
