Xephyr[solved]

good evening, everyone,
i'm trying to use Xnest to spawn a new X server in a window. i did this years back, and there were no problems. now all i get is a black screen. the first command i used was this:
Xnest :1 -geometry 800x600
after some googling i found out that Xnest is considered to be obsolete in most distros, so i should use Xephyr instead. okay, so i typed:
Xephyr :1
blank screen again. so after some more searching, i found a post on some forum suggesting the use of:
Xephyr :1 -query localhost -host-cursor -screen 800x600
still just a black screen. so, someone on another forum said the following worked for him:
Xephyr :1 -query 127.0.0.1 -screen 800x600
same old black screen. i tried starting a window manager (Xnest blablabla & exec mwm), and the large hourglass of mwm showed up for a sec, but then.. you guessed it. blank screen.
so i started reading the errors on the console. the one repeated lots of times was:
(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed (2)
Ignoring device from HAL.
now i'm stuck. i understand that this has to do something with hal, but that doesn't help me at all. i've seen some bug reports for fedora and ubuntu on the net, but no solution ('works for me' and 'i can confirm it' are not solutions).
can someone help me with this?

It's a black screen because nothing is running in it. (It doesn't source .xinitrc)
And this: "Xnest blablabla & exec mwm" runs mwm in the current DISPLAY
I use this:
Xephyr :1 -terminate -screen 1280x1024 &
sleep 2
DISPLAY=:1 xterm

  • [SOLVED] Network Manager cannot connect to wifi after suspend

    Hi,
    There appears to be similar threads recently, but they relate to no wifi at all. I did some updates today, and now if I suspend or hibernate, network manager cannot reconnect to my wifi. It will (after a while) ask me to authenticate, but still fails. Nothing works except a reboot where it connects without issue.

    heiko wrote:linux-3.3.2 is released on www.kernel.org and reverts the patch that introduced this problem.
    For those using the arch repo kernel the next release will solve this issue. So I suggest waiting for this (no more than a few days) and use the LTS kernel in the meantime (or using a fixed ath9k module if already built).
    Thanks for that heiko. I thought that would be the case, hence I just waited.
    Will mark this as solved.
    Cheers.

  • Slow resizing with fglrx/catalyst [solved]

    Here is the solution I found and tested:
    http://blog.jasondonenfeld.com/169#comment-404
    I am running catalyst 9.8 using a Radeon 3850 and have had this re-size/maximize problem as long as long as I have used KDE4. To solve the problem I needed to modify a file in xorg-server. in the code directory it is called ./composite/compalloc.c. Here I commented out most of a function called compNewPixmap. Everything below these lines:
    pPixmap->screen_x = x;
    pPixmap->screen_y = y;
    all the way down to (but not including) the last line:
    return pPixmap;
    After this I am running KDE4 with all desktop effects that I want and without any lag in resizing/maximizing.
    I am running Gentoo, so I just updated the xorg-server source package file and put it back into the source repository, rebuilt the manifest and emerged it again. Voila!
    .patch is:

    Or, you can install one of the already-patched servers on AUR:

  • [Solved] Openproj looks strange in the awesome WM

    Hi Community,
    I just installed openproj from the AUR. But when I run it in the awesome WM, I found the background of the application looked nearly blank, which made openproj impossible to edit in.
    It looks strange. So, openproj cannot be run from the awesome WM?
    Any idea will be helpful. Thanks.
    =======
    Solved:
    Just edit the file /usr/bin/openproj and add a line to be as follows:
    #!/bin/sh
    wmname LG3D
    java -Xms128m -Xmx768m -jar /usr/share/openproj/openproj.jar > /dev/null

    Thank you very much!
    =====
    Edit:
    I've found a detailed description from this article: Java GUI application in Awesome Window Manager.
    There is a known problem with Java and the non-reparenting Window Managers like for example Awesome.
    Java applications which use the XToolkit/XAWT backend may draw gray windows only. The XToolkit/XAWT backend breaks ICCCM-compliance in JDK 5 and 6 because it assumes a reparenting window manager.
    There are a number of places where this is described:
        * in the FAQ : GUI Java apps appear as a gray screen!
        * in the wiki Problems with Java
        * in the Man page
    To sum up:
        * it doesn't affect version Java 1.4.2 and before.
        * it doesn't affect version Java 1.7 and hopefully after.
        * the best workaround by far, is to set a name to the Window Manager, so it is recognise by Java as a non-reparenting Window Manager. A simple utility allow to set this name. Just add 'wmname LG3D' to your .xinitrc or simply run it.
        * Here are other workarounds left here for reference:
              o launch another X server, like Xephyr
              o set the following environment variable (to use the older Motif back-end instead): AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit. But this won't work in the following cases :
                    + OpenJDK/IcedTea doesn't include the Motif toolkit.
                    + doesn't work for x86_64 Java, for whatever reason

  • [Solved] No video in nvidia HDTV after HDMI switching

    My HDTV client (Arch64bit,XFCE) goes through a Receiver which can switch HDMI inputs, then to a HD monitor. Until recently, I could switch and find the video still working when I switched back.  Recently this changed. The HDTV client also dual boots Win7, which does allow switching. To wit:
    HDTV client setup(dual boot,HDMI,nvidiaGT610):
    ‥Archlinux/nvidiaGT610 ->SwitchingReceiver->SamsungHDmonitor
    ‥Win7/nvidiaGT610 ->SwitchingReceiver->SamsungHDMonitor
    Previous behavoir:
    …switching away from HDTVclient then switching back - HDmonitor video works
    Current Behavior:
    …switching away from HDTVclientWin7 then switching back - HDmonitor video works as expected
    …switching away from HDTVclientArchlinux then switching back - HDmonitor video blank (no signal) but Remote desktop works, shows X11 working (putty SSL, vnc Remote Desktop). Requires reboot to restore video with HDmonitor on and Receiver HDMI selected to HDTV Archlinux/nvidiaGT610.

    Thanks to Evangelos Foutras (foutrelis) the issue is solved and the Bug FS#44199 - No video in nvidia HDTV after HDMI switching is closed.
    The bug...
    In xfsettingsd 4.11.2 there appears to be a regression that when a TV hooked up to the computer via HDMI gets power cycled, it stops displaying anything.
    It happens via a RANDR event being sent to all X clients when the TV gets turned off.
    xfsettingsd thinks that it should switch to an internal output, but desktops don't have one.  So when the TV comes back on the bus it seems like it's an extra monitor and xfsettingsd gets confused.
    My new workaround...
    Unwilling to do any testing on a remote HDTV client for domestic tranquility reasons, I did this…
    Dug out an old monitor, searched through the parts drawer and found a DVI-to-DB-9 converter, plugged it in and tested that per description in XFCE Bug 11107 - xfsettingsd resets TV mode to NULL on power cycle.
    The problem is (re)solved as video is restored after switching.

    Earlier was using LVM and Arch age on Vol0/archlinux, today I moved the system out of LVM, then system now is on sda1, for move I do this (I can't remember the correct order but I thinks that's it):
    1. copied system using "rsync -ah --progress" ignoring sys,dev,run,mnt,proc
    2. configured /etc/fstab accordly:
    /dev/sda1 / btrfs rw,relatime,space_cache,compress=lzo 0 1
    3. from a chroot installed grub (no error reported), i.e.:
    grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
    4. booted in the system
    all are working well, except some services can't start at boot: dnsmasq and after login in console systemd-logind fail to start at first try (automatically) after it start normally and is working.
    another thing is that LightDM won't start, the complete output:
    [+0.00s] DEBUG: Logging to /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log
    [+0.00s] DEBUG: Starting Light Display Manager 1.6.0, UID=0 PID=3230

    [+0.01s] DEBUG: Stopping seat
    [+0.01s] DEBUG: Seat stopped
    Failed to get D-Bus connection
    tried:
    1. re-installing lightdm
    2. regenerating initramfs
    3. removing and re-installing dbus and systemd (i.e.: pacman -Rnsdd systemd dbus; pacman -S systemd dbus)
    nothing of these things solves, So I think that it isn't a LightDM issue.
    dbus-monitor looks correct!

    Is X server Xephyr in your path?
    By the way, you would be better advised to use the rsync flags mentioned in the wiki page for full system backup with rsync to make sure that you do not lose information. -a will get most stuff but not everything. For example, ping may not work and I think you will lose ACLs as well as capabilities. I doubt this is why it can't find the X server, though.

    When I try to login to the website of my bank, I get the following error message:
    403 - Forbidden: Access is denied.
    You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied.
    I have a new MacBook Air with OS Yosemite installed.
    What is the problem and how can I solve it?

    Some websites require a special client certficate for access. If you don't have that certficate, you'll have to contact the site operator to find out how to get one.
    Sometimes the problem is caused by a web server that is configured to request an optional client certificate. Safari treats the request as mandatory. In that case, other browsers such as Firefox and Chrome may be able to connect to the site, because they ignore the request.
    The first time you were prompted for a certificate, you may have clicked through a dialog that requested access to the Apple certificate in your keychain that is used to secure the iMessage service. In that case, you may be able to regain access to the site in Safari by doing as follows.
    Back up all data.
    Double-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    com.apple.idms.appleid.prd
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
    Paste into the search field in the Keychain Access window by clicking in it and pressing the key combination command-V. An item may appear in the list of keychain items. The Name will begin with string you searched for, and the Kind will be "certificate."
    Delete the item by selecting it and pressing the delete key. It will be recreated automatically the next time you launch the Messages or FaceTime application.
    The next time you visit a site that prompts for an optional client certificate, cancel out of the prompt. You may have to do this several times before the server stops asking.
    Credit for this idea to Christian Braukmueller of SAP.

    Content and Apple IDs -
    Content is forever tied to the Apple ID that bought it. Apple does not transfer content from one Apple ID to another. Apple does not merge Apple IDs. You will never be able to access your content bought with one Apple ID with a new Apple ID.

    I am not able to launch FF everytime i try to open it, it says FF has to submit a crash report,and restore yr tabs. I even tried doing that and the report was submitted too, but still FF did not start, and the problem still persists, please help me solve this issue
    '''(in English)'''

    Hi Danny,
    Per my understanding that you can't get the expect result by using the expression "=Count(Fields!TICKET_STATUS.Value=4) " to count the the TICKET_STATUS which value is 4, the result will returns the count of all the TICKET_STATUS values(206)
    but not 180, right?
    I have tested on my local environment and can reproduce the issue, the issue caused by you are using the count() function in the incorrect way, please modify the expression as below and have a test:
    =COUNT(IIF(Fields!TICKET_STATUS.Value=4 ,1,Nothing))
    or
    =SUM(IIF(Fields!TICKET_STATUS=4,1,0))
    If you still have any problem, please feel free to ask.

  • Can anyone help me solve the problem of text displaying very rough on my new ASUS PA279Q display monitor running off my MacBook Pro?

    This is regarding a brand new ASUS PA 279Q, 2560 x 1440 IPS monitor. I'm connected via mini display port (into thunderbolt port on MacBook Pro) to display port on ASUS monitor; using cable ASUS included with the monitor. Mid 2012 MacBook Pro…full specs at bottom of this post.
    I have resolution set at 2560 x 1440 which is the native resolution according to the ASUS spec. I tried the other resolutions available in my System Preferences and text displayed rough with those settings too. I've tried adjusting contrast, brightness and sharpness via the ASUS control panel and didn't solve the problem. Also tried calibrating via Mac's system preferences/display and that did not improve text display either. All the text on this monitor (no matter what software I launch, Finder, InDesign, Illustrator, MS Word, Excel, VMWare Windows XP, Windows versions of Word, Excel, Acrobat, etc, all are consistently rendering text the same way ---  ROUGH and with "HALOS" around each letter.
    All point sizes of text and at various scales, display very rough on the screen. (My comparison is the retina display of my MBP and a Thunderbolt…so those two displays are my expectations.) I'm using the same MBP for both a Thunderbolt display (at work) and this ASUS at my home office.
    On the ASUS it's not as noticeable when the text is on white backgrounds, but I'm a graphic designer and compose images with text all day everyday. Not to mention the specs on this ASUS PA279Q indicate it's built for the professional so I would expect better text rendering. I haven't even addressed color calibration and balance yet, because that won't matter to me if the text won't display any better than it is now.
    I was so hopeful after researching all the specs on this monitor it would be a viable alternative to the glossy display of the Thunderbolt display. (Which, I do love the Thunderbolt display for it's clarity and how it displays crisp, clean text at all sizes. (This ASUS actually displays text decently if I increase the text so each letter is about 4" high. Which is pointless for practical purposes -- that'd be like doing page layout through a microscope!)
    I kept holding off on getting a monitor for the home office thinking the Thunderbolt would be updated soon. I'd be sick if I dropped a grand on piece of 2011 technology only to learn a few days later an updated Thunderbolt display hit the market! Not to mention, I'm praying Apple comes out with a less reflective Thunderbolt display. The glare and reflection is the main reason I looked elsewhere for a large monitor; hence my asking for help. Hoping the ASUS text display issue can be worked out. My expectation is for it to display like the MBP retina and Thunderbolt display text. That possible?
    Alternatively, I guess I could do the Apple Refurb Thunderbolt at $799. And see if there's a decent aftermarket anti-glare I could stick on it?
    Thanks for reading my post. Hope someone can help; offer any suggestions? Words or wisdom?
    Has anyone else had similar issues and figured out a resolution? Help!
    MacBook Pro
    Retina, Mid 2012, 2.3 Ghz Intel i7
    8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    OS X 10.8.5
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    ASUS PA279Q

    I uninstalled those two items. It still runs slow on start-up and when opening safari, firefox, iphoto, itunes, etc. It's not snappy like it used to be. Any other ideas? Thanks.

  • How can i use one SQL statement to solve problem?

    How can i use one SQL statement to solve the question below?
    For a Table named A, there is a column named F(char type).
    Now select all the records where F like '%00' and update their F value to '%01'
    Just one SQL statement.Do not use PL/SQL block.
    How to do that?
    Thanks.

    What is the data volume for this table?
    Do you expect lots of rows to have '%00' as their value?
    Following two statements come to mind. Other experts would be able to provide better alternatives:
    If you have index on SUBSTR(f, 2):
    UPDATE A
    SET    f = SUBSTR(f,
                      1,
                      length(f) - 2) || '01'
    WHERE  substr(f,
                  -2) = '00';If most of the rows have pattern '%00':
    UPDATE A
    SET    f = SUBSTR(f,
                      1,
                      length(f) - 2) ||
               DECODE(SUBSTR(f,
                             -2),
                      '00',
                      '01',
                      SUBSTR(f,
                             -2));

    (You establish PPPoE sessions over the local network to the Arch machine? Which then routes the traffic?)
    first question ,yes that is exactly what i am done. second question i also have a small  scripts on windows pc to solve routes traffic problem
    route -p delete 0.0.0.0
    route -p add 192.168.9.0 mask 255.255.255.0 192.168.9.1
    route -p add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 192.168.22.0
    but after a while i found scripts is not necessary because windows always attempt to use PPPoE sessions as default internet connection local connection is also ok
    and use  -i pppX in my iptables rules dose not  solve my problem , because same account start PPPoE session could be marked as ppp0 or ppp1. it is hard to identified which account start session.

    Then, because I am on a UEFI system, I copied the initrd images and the vmlinuz image over to my ESP (just like I've done many a time before), and now the system won't boot. It doesn't throw any errors; rather, as soon as UEFI selects the entry to run, the computer just sits there (there is nothing in the logs so far as I can find).
    I've booted with a live medium and I've tried regenerating the images and recopying them (the checksums of the images changed, so I figured that might do the trick), but it's still a no-go. Is there something obvious that I'm missing? Has anyone else run into this problem?
    [Edit]: Though this appeared to be solved with 3.10.3, the problem appears to have returned with 3.10.8. No actual solution has been found. As with before, a new kernel has been released (3.10.9) with which this issue does not exist…
    All the best,

    So I added /boot to my fstab with option "auto" to not rely on the systemd-efi-generator and /boot was mounted just fine. Then I set noauto,x-systemd.automount and the autofs mount point was created as expected. Then I removed the /boot entry in fstab again and the systemd-efi-generator seems to work fine again...
    I'm seriously confused right now...
    btw, I did all of this mit kernel 3.9.9 booted. 3.10.2 doesn't boot on my system, it's the famous ""EFI machine randomly hangs while loading kernel" bug again. But this shouldn't have anything to do with the kernel install problem...
    edit: I just realized that my "btw" is actually what OP describes. I should have read the thread completely, sorry
    Either way, as far as I can see these are two separate issues. The EFI bug with the long thread that I mentioned above and the fact that /boot seems to not mount in some cases. I did some more testing regarding this, but I still have no idea what is happening. I could have sworn there was no automount point set up by systemd at some point, which would have made sense. But I can't reproduce it anymore...
