Xf86-radeonhd broken with new Kernel got problems without xorg.conf

Hi all,
according to lspci I got a
"01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M56P [Radeon Mobility X1600]"
I've had problems with it and the open source drivers for a long time in both Ubuntu and Arch (round about every 10 minutes the monitor (of two) which doesn't have the mouse on it flickers white for a split second but long enough to be annoying).
I solved it by using radeonhd which doesn't have this problem even though it's performance is slightly worse, i'm not a gamer so I dind't care too much.
However now radeonhd has become extremely slow probably due to KMS so I mv'ed my xorg.conf and am running without one using the radeon driver.
Performance is great but I got the flicker problem back. Does anyone have an idea what to do? This card has also not worked with recent fglrx versions by the way (the README says it supports M55 + M56 or so but explicitly states that M56P is not supported).
many thanks in advance Niklas

So I have radeonhd working properly again with the Radeon Mobility X1600.
I recommend disabling KMS and trying radeonhd. You can disable the KMS by following these instructions: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI#Disable_KMS
This is working much more nicely than the regular radeon driver with the flicker problems. The speed difference with KMS disabled is VERY noticeable. Hopefully this will be fixed soon...

  • ATI display driver fails to work with new kernel

    Hi,
    I've just upgraded from
    OEL kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3.0.1.el5.x86_64
    to most current
    OEL kernel-2.6.18-194.11.4.0.1.el5.x86_64
and got the problem with ATI display driver. Whenever I perform kernel upgrade, I have to recompile vendor-provided ATI display driver downloadable from AMD/ATI site, because system ATI driver, provided by OEL/RHEL as kernel module, doesn't work properly (too slow). I did that hundred times and never had a problem. This time the problem is that after upgrading to new kernel and recompiling the existing ATI display driver (Revision 10.8), it doesn't work anymore, even though it worked perfectly with previous kernel. I cannot even start X11 (glibc problem reported with stack traces!!!). The newest ATI display driver (Revision 10.9) "works" with new kernel, but display is awfully slow making any serious work impossible. It is even slower than system-provided ATI driver.
I am pretty sure the problem is in new kernel. As I have no backup of old kernel files and couldn't download the previous OEL kernel files from ULN, neither binary nor source (the files do not exist on ULN anymore, only the recent kernel files), I downloaded the previous kernel source from ftp.redhat.com, compiled the kernel and downgraded to it, recompiled ATI display driver, and everything works properly and fast as before upgrading. I can remember that ULN site used to have all kernel versions prior to actual one and cannot understand why Oracle dropped this practice. As I have an ULN account, I certainly want to have OEL patched kernel.
My question is: does anybody know how and where I can download the previous OEL kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3.0.1.el5.x86_64 binary rpm files or at least source rpm file?
Maybe Sergio or Tommy can help?
    Thanks in advance.
    NJ

I have experienced the same with Ubuntu some years ago - specific feature (hack?) that was implemented in the kernel was deprecated. This was used by the display driver for an onboard Intel graphics chipset. Beryl (which was subsequently merged with Compiz) turned into a horribly slow experience. As far as I recall, a subsequent kernel patch "fixed" things as a number of users were affected, of which many complained very loudly.
Anyway, I think the lesson here is that OEL is not really the correct distro to use for a desktop. A broken ATI driver for the OEL kernel? Does not really feature in the scheme of things for OEL support. Oracle Grid/RAC/Enterprise/Standard Edition do not care. Oracle's application servers (Apache, Weblogic, etc) do not care. Etc.
Sure, GUI desktop access to an OEL server is needed (like when running dbca or an installer) - but that can easily and effectively be done using vncserver for example and running twm.
You may be able to fix/work-around the problem with the current kernel update.. you may be able to roll back the update. But what about the next time when some other component does not work after a patch or an update? Surely it is a lot less stressful and frustrating to rather use a desktop distro, like Ubuntu, instead?

  • Arch freezes after about 10 minutes with new kernel [SOLVED]

As the title says: Arch freezes after about 10 minutes with new kernel (2.6.27). I can only move a mouse, but everything else is frozen. Even restarting X doesn't do a trick. It doesn't work at all. Frozen.
I don't get any kind of error message (oh really?), so what's the problem..?

Yeah... I'm using nvidia... So the problem is nvidia drivers, not the Linux kernel?
Edit: My card is nVidia GeForce 8800 Ultra. I can't get driver information now, because I'm using WinXP right now. I'll check it later.
Did you make a new install or just updated?
You can try to reinstall old kernel with:
    pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/kernel(version you want).pkg.tar.gz
if you made a new install you may have to install the xorg keyboard driver and so.
By the way, there are a few diferent packages for nvidia drivers. Check wich is yours.
Also check /var/log/ folder for errors.
    Updated kernel.
And as I said, I'll check the driver later.

  • New kernel and problems installing nvidia-legacy drivers

I just compiled new kernel, and I can't install nvidia-legacy drivers properly. Pacman installs them, but the module (nvidia.ko) goes to /lib/modules/2.6.19-ARCH, and I want it to 2.6.19.2.. It doesn't work if I just copy the module..
I've compiled kernel many times without problems when I was still using Slackware.  So, what do I need to configure to use the new module directory? I Propably made some small/stupid mistake..
I tried legacy drivers from nvidia.com, but they didnt compile.. weird, gonna try that again too..

You need to install the nvidia drivers, or any other non-kernel drivers, specifically for the kernel you are using. Arch packages the nvidia drivers to work with the Arch kernel packages, and the "Arch way" to deal with your situation is to modify the appropriate PKGBUILD to match your kernel, create a custom package with makepkg, and install it with pacman.
You can also use the nvidia installer, but in that case the nvidia files installed on your system will not be under pacman's control.

  • [Solved] Lockups with newer Kernels

I noticed frequent lockups where REISUB would still work and I could even still switch workspaces, though nothing would load (sometimes I had a terminal open, but it would never show a prompt). It all started, I think, with the kernels > 3.17.
The lts kernel worked without a problem.
The program that triggered this most of the time is Kodi.
I'm using the -ck kernel from AUR optimized for my CPU, but the regular Arch kernel has the same issue. Recently in one of the other threads about freezes, someone suggested recompiling with, PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY. I did that and the problem was gone.
Now yesterday there was an update to kernel 3.19.3.-2 and now it seems PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY doesn't even cut it. So I checked what the lts kernel uses and it has preemption disabled, so I compiled with that set and am currently checking the results.
My question here really is as to why all that is: has it got to do with my machine?
    Here are my specs:
    Pentium Core2Duo E6700 3.2 GHz
    4 GB Ram
    NVIDIA Geforce GT 520
Edit: Solved, since it's not an issue anymore with kernels >4.0

I now know it can't be my system's config. Just bootstrapped ipxe.lkrn from syslinux and chose releng 64-bit 2012.08.07_04-00-01. As soon as it finished downloading files and started booting up - kaboom, a cold reboot as if the reset button was pressed.
I wonder if this problem is related to "3.3.5+ power regression still present"
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=146851
EDIT: I've also tried 32-bit install ISO with the same results.

  • Compiz -- No shadows with new kernel?

I know there have been random posts about this, but I was wondering if anybody has had any updates, since nobody has said anything for a few weeks.
Basically speaking, I have the problem where nVidia 169.12 + 2.6.24 = no shadows or, occasionally, off-color, faint shadows that you can barely see.  All other aspects of Compiz work just fine--and in fact, the shadows worked fine a few weeks ago when I had 64-bit Arch installed.  However, I got tired of the hassle that was Java et al., and switched to 32-bit.  However, like I said, I have yet to see any shadows at all.  All other window decorations work--just not shadows.
Direct rendering, etc., is all working... hardware acceleration is not the issue.
I've recompiled the kernel, used both the Thinkpad kernel (kernel26tp) and the Zen kernel (kernel26-zen), but I still have the same problem.  Does anybody have a solution?
EDIT: Added my xorg.conf config file, for what its worth...

I seem to have the same problem. The sound would play in some programs, would not in others, and in all of them when I stop playing, it would repeat the last half second endlessly. Could anybody shed some light on this problem?

  • Problems with New Kernel regarding mouse and random shutdowns etc

After upgrading to kernel 3.2.1-2, my computer has shutdown a couple times. They "normal" shutdowns as in I will press the shutdown button in my de and computer actually shuts down. Also a couple times when turning my computer off i will have to reboot because my laptop touchpad is not working. going into a tty i do rmmod psmouse and it will say the module is not loaded, loading the module makes no difference. The last few updates I have also had regressions with my wireless. By default arch blocks my wireless and in rc.local I have rfkill unblock all, but this lately does not always work. I have been manually loading the ath9k driver. My laptop is a gateway nv79c, intel i5, onboard graphics, 4 gb of ram. My wireless card is an atheros ar928x. To be clear, the mouse problem and shutting down has started since updating to 3.2.1-2. Yes I know the kernel was just updated today but I have been using my laptop a lot today.

  • Remote apple events - broken with new version of Xcode

It's been a couple of years since I programed my app in Xcode. I am in the process of adding features, but controlling iTunes with remote apple events seems to be broken when I compile with the new version of Xcode. I haven't changed any of the code involving the remote computer.
Are there any known issues? Any code that works differently with the new version?

It seems that the problem wasn't the fault of the new incarnation of Xcode. The user name on the remote machine I was using for testing had a space in it. Apparently the call to the remote machine is sensitive to Unix path rules and cannot contain a space. Thanks to all who scratched their brains on this question

  • How to create ArchLinux install CD (with new kernel+extra tools)?

I am planning to buy a HP nx6325 notebook. Unfortunately, it has some ACPI issues (thermal) which I think are solved in the git kernel version (they're not even in 2.6.20.1 I think). The problem is quite serious as it seems to be causing thermal problems.
I'd like to create a new ArchLinux install CD with the latest (git) kernel + some extra packages. I plan to backup the entire HDD (100GB) over network and I need something efficient to read NTFS partitions (=ntfsclone)
Unfortunately, the default ArchLinux install CD does not have this package. (as a request: maybe the ArchLinux install CD could also serve as a rescue Live CD.)
I found the "archboot" package - apparently, creating an install CD is straight-forward. I have looked for documentation on how to
    * add tools to the ArchLinux install CD (available directly, without install) - I'd like to add "ntfsclone"+dependencies
    * change the kernel (using archboot)
    * (for the future) add packages available for install
I couldn't find anything. Does anybody know where I could find such information?
    Many thanks.

The up-to-date versions of both squashfs and unionfs can no longer be built as external modules - they exist only as kernel patches. Unionfs will be merged in to vanilla at some point (it just made it into -mm last month), but that won't be for another while - at the moment, it's looking like 2.6.22 or after.

  • Slow wireless speed with new iMac Intel- problem with 802.11g?

There IS a problem with the new Intel Mac, I have tried both the Intel iMac and the new Intel Mac mini and they both have the same problem with slow wireless speed (or rather it variates, if I do a ping to another computer on the network the speed goes from < 1 ms up to 1000 ms and then down to < 1 ms and so on). The older mac minis, my Linux boxes and my Windows PCs don´t have that problem. I have also read reports on the net and it appears that most users experiencing this problem have wireless card firmware version 101.3 (3.120.28.3) . A possible "fix" is to change to 802.11b on the router and then it works. No speed fluctuations and a stabile network! I know it is a bad solution, I would prefer to use 802.11g and get the speed. However I think this points to a problem with the drivers regarding 802.11g. I am starting up a new thread on this and those of you with problems, please try to switch to 802.11b and if it works let us make Apple aware of this.

This time I think I understand him:
    Mainboard: MSI 975X Platinum PowerUp-Edition (MS-7246 v.2.1)
He wants to know if the incompatibility issue between JMicron and the Intel RAID controller that appeared with the 7.2x BIOS-Versions has been resolved in the latest official BIOS (7.5). The JMicron controller has to be completely disabled in order to use Intel RAID.  One IDE and one SATA port are rendered useless due to this BIOS bug.
HOW??! How you can read his mind??!?

  • CS2 printing broken with new Epson driver and/or 10.5.5?

I've been using InDesign CS2 for fine art printing for the last year (CS3 printing was totally broken) to and Epson R2400. Originally, I had been using Photoshop, but I found printing from CS2 gave the same results and I had better control over crops, etc. within a specific framed size. InDesign CS2 and Photoshop gave the same great color results. Then, this last week, I updated both my OS (from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5) and my Epson driver (as 10.5.5 wouldn't see my R2400 via FireWire). Now, when I print from CS2, I get crappy prints. Not as crap as CS3, but WAY crappier than Photoshop.
Has anyone else experienced this? Such a bummer!!!!
I wonder if InDesign CS4 is broken too? Anyone know if they've fixed the printing issues in CS4 (not holding my breathe as I'm sure they were rushing to get CS4 out the door just as much as they were CS3).
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

Got it working again. All I did to fix it (and match the same output from Photoshop) was, in the driver, under Color Matching, I selected "Epson Color Controls" (and then turned off color management in Printer Color Management).
Not sure what has changed, but this worked for me. Haven't tested in InDesign CS3 or CS4 yet.

  • Devtools component makechrootpkg broken with latest kernel upgrade

I've been using makechrootpkg from devtools, inorder to compile packages in a clean buildroot. This tool relys on unionfs to maintain the build root. With the latest stable kernel updates, unionfs has disappeared. I understand that this is inorder to accomodate aufs2. It does not seem that aufs2 provides similar or compatible features as unionfs, atleast not enough for makechrootpkg to function properly.
Is anyone else using makechrootpkg? Did you have to downgrade kernel, or can unionfs be built seperately and live in peace with aufs2(I'm not using aufs2 for anything that I know of). Will the fuse-unionfs from AUR do the trick to get makechrootpkg function, or will this also conflict with aufs2?
How are you guys building clean packages without makechrootpkg?

Allan wrote:It fixes that bug ...
On further examination, it appears that the HEAD for makechrootpkg still only is using unionfs.

By no means take this as a complaint. Just a FYI I'll happily patch locally via the directions from arch-dev-public thread.
    Thanks again guys!
P.S. I do think I'll still update to the version of makepkg from git though, for those other cool features that have been added
