XFCE, desktop icons not refreshing

Yesterday I tried to create 2 icons on my desktop but they didn't show up, today though when I start my computer the icons I created does exist. But now I can't delete the icons, well XFCE does say the icon doesn't exist if I try to delete it a second time. Why isn't XFCE refreshing my desktop icons? or is it suppose to refresh them only on login/logout?

Do you have "fam" installed and started ?
# /etc/rc.d/fam start

  • Desktop icons not showing up for T60's and T61's

We are having an issue with nearly half (we have a few hundred at out company) of our T60’s and T61’s where they do not show the desktop icons at boot up.  If they start the task manager and run explorer then everything pops up like normal.  But they will have to repeat this process every time they boot up.  We also tried having them turn off the wireless radio via the slider switch but that did not help.
One fix we found was to go C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data  and copy the IconCache.db found there over the users IconCache.  This fixes the issue for 99% of the people who have this problem, but there are a few that continue to boot up to no desktop items.
The only other fix we have found was to put explorer.exe in the start up folder.  This brings up a pop up of their My Documents at start up that they have to close but is much easier than going through the task manager to run explorer.
We also have many T43’s and many Lenovo desktops from M-81, M-82, and M-88’s.  none of the desktops show this problem and we have not had this issue with any of the 43’s.
The software packages are essentially the same for all of our systems.  The only difference being is that the desktops do not have VPN.

Good news: I found a solution. Kind of bad news: it's an extremely awkward behaviour –*but at least it works.
Start iTunes, remove all your voice memos from your library (back them up if you need them), quit iTunes. Restart Finder. Done. I hope that helps!

  • Desktop Icons Not Appearing

I recently update to 10.6, and have the 10.6.1 update as well. Every now and then, when I turn on my macbook, the desktop will be blank. Sometimes I have to restart and sometimes they will just pop up a few minutes later. I have the Macintosh HD icon and a few various excel icons. Any thoughts?

There seems to be a bug with Finder where some aspect of disconnecting a MBP from an external display will cause the desktop to crash. Symptoms include:
All desktop icons disappear but files on the desktop can still be accessed by browsing through Finder.
Desktop background image cycling (if enabled) does not occur.
You can bring up the desktop shortcut menu (i.e. by right clicking)

The workaround is to relaunch Finder using the "Force Quit" application, at which point the desktop works normally again. However I'd really like a proper fix to this bug. If anyone's heard about one, please post about it here.

  • BT Desktop Icons not working

Suddenly, for no apparent reason four BT icons on my desktop have stopped working i.e. "My BT", "BT Broadband Life", "BT Email & Search" and "BT Yahoo Online". "BT Desktop Help" does work OK. When I double click on any of the inoperative ones I get an error message saying "Launch HM.EXE - Entry point not found. The procedure entry point IsDefaultBrowserIE could not be located in the dynamic link library BTCommon.dll". I have tried downloading and reinstalling the BT Yahoo version of IE8, and running the BT Infinity setup CD again, but it makes no difference. What's gone wrong and how do I fix it?

The software for some reason isnt talking to each other anymore. Sometimes an update to BT DTHelp can throw other software into a dysfunctional mode.
I ceased trying to understand the former a long time ago, just before I got rid of the lot. If you dont want to liberate your PC from this lot, a clean sweep and a re-install, careful to remove any profiles that might have been created for them in the PC's Registry. CCleaner download via google from file hippo might help, but not 100%.
You need a browser, of that there is no doubt. Are the rest proportionate to the amount of time you will need to fix this?
The other Q is how much do you need the rest as desktop icons?  So you could spend a lot of time trying to fix this, or just bin the lot and have a happy life. Try another browser besides IE, say Firefox/Chrome.

  • Macbook power icon not refreshing

On my macbook (10.6.8) the battery icon in the top toolbar does not refresh to reflect the current charge.
For example - it might display as being plugged in when it's not, read 90% charged when it's about to die, etc.
I can force it to refresh to the proper state by changing the display seeing for the icon (ie, from percent to time) and it will show the current state properly. But it won't continue to show the updated status. Any time i need to know what my battery is, i need to refresh the icon.
Note - I haven't noticed any actually battery issues. It seems to charge just fine and has appropriate battery life when not plugged in. The interface simply doesn't show the power properly.
Not sure what could be causing this. Thanks for the help

  • One Fix: Can't launch desktop items, desktop dead, desktop icons not workin

Just reporting a strange thing, hope it helps in a future "search"...
The items on my desktop had become "unclickable". That is, I could dbl-click desktop items and nothing would happen.
The problem? I had set the mouse dbl-click speed to "fastest" setting. (Hours earlier) The system simply wasn't catching the dbl-clicks. Setting the click speed slower solved the issue.
So... Desktop item won't launch or open? Check your mouse settings...
Key words & phrases for search:
    desktop item won't launch open
    desktop doesn't work
    desktop dead
    desktop items not working
    desktop files not working
    dead destop

    Hi Chris,
Try reinstalling the drivers that came with the mouse.

  • Xfce4-svn: desktop icons not removed [solved]

    How to reproduce:
    1. create file on desktop (e.g., drag it from Thunar window, or save file directly on desktop)
    2. Delete this file via context menu
    3. The icon of this file stay on the desktop anyway. If you open ~/Desktop, you'll see that file really deleted, but the icon present.
    Any ideas?

Thanks to pushing me in proper direction. Really, fam not running
I start fam and restart xfce. Now icons disappear after deleting. Thnx

  • Chance Xfce desktop icon color and folder select background color

    Hi there,
I'm using Xfce as my DE and I have installed this theme.
The problem is, because I have a black desktop background I can't see the icon's labels very well. I already tried to change the color with the file .gtkrc-2.0 in many ways, including the one in Arch Wiki, but the problem continues.
The other problem is, when I select a folder/file in Thunar the background is white, and again it's very difficult to distinguish between selected and not select folders/files. How can I change the background color? (This one I have no idea of how to make).
    Thanks in advance.

  • SAPGUI 7.20 Comp 1 getting error -2147024894 -desktop icon not working

    Hello all,
First time here, so take it easy on a newbie.
Trying to create customised package for deployment in our network using the standard SAP network installer method (as outlined in the SAP Frontend installation guide -Release 7.20 Compliation 1).
After creating the package with additional script commands, I created a compressed single file installer (as per instructions) and proceeded to manually install on our lab pc's for testing.
I've found consistently that after running the installer successfully, that I noticed that the desktop and Program files shortcuts to open the Frontend, have no active icon (that is the file they reference is not being registered by the shortcut). It seems that the target: "C:\Program Files\SAP\SapSetup\Setup\SAL\SapLogon.s8l" has lost its file associations. If I create a shortcut directly to the saplogon.exe that it works fine.
I also noticed that the error logs contain numerous errors (-2147024894) referring to "Error: File not found" - there are numerous dll's etc referenced. In some cases 311 errors appear in this log.
I'm just a humble packaging engineer so any Guru's out there that can point me in the right direction will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    NK

  • Full file name under desktop icon, not a finder window.

Hello, is it possible to have icons/dirs on the desktop display their entire name without ellipses? Don't care about /path.
    Thank-you,
    Dennis

    Try launching "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app" and entering these commands:<pre>
defaults write com.apple.finder FXDesktopLayoutGridCharCount -int 50
osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to quit'</pre>
Then restart the "Finder" by clicking on its "Dock" icon.
You can try different numbers other than "50" until you find a value that suits your preferences.
Edit: oops, too slow I guess.

  • XFCE Systray icons not transparent / white background

Up-to-date arch here with XFCE; look at this screenshot:
The same happens with all GTK themes, and I have installed / tried A LOT of them.
Does anyone else have this problem?

  • Desktop Icon not connecting

Whilst uploading a largish document, displayed the guide to
look to see if there is anyway to delete an email address from the
share with list. Could NOT find a method!!!
On trying to return to "My Files" nothing happened. Try most
things on the window to see if any may stimulate it into action,
ended up pressing the "widget" button in the control box area. It
    all disappeared.
Got back in via the web site with Firefox.

    Hello Jmacf,
Thanks for posting to the Acrobat.com forums!
In Buzzword, addresses will stay in the list of people to
share with, as long as there is a document in common. Users can be
added/removed from this list as needed.
Currently, the Share’s address list just continues to
build and there is no way currently to delete someone from the
list. Your best bet here if really needing to not allow a user
access to a particular doc, would be to turn the sharing privileges
    completely to "no access".
This is a topic under some discussion for future
    releases...stay tuned!!
As for the second issue you're seeing, with the AIR window
disappearing, it sounds like you're using a screen resolution of
    1024x768.
Currently the AIR widget default location at which these
widgets get placed is outside the viewable area of the display in
1024 usually. This issue has been fixed but we'll have to wait for
the next release of the AIR app!
In the meantime, the workaround is to temporarily increase
the screen resolution for the display, which will allow you to view
the minimized widget/buttons again and then drag those buttons into
    the screen display.
    Thanks!
    Pete

  • Remote Desktop Session - Sections of Screen Not Refreshing

    Remote Desktop Session Not Refreshing
    I have 3 monitors.
When I connect to any RDP session, my screen seems to lag.  For instance, I click the start button and nothing displays, but when I move the mouse, I see parts of the start menu appear.
This seems to be a recent issue. I RDP sessions throughout the day, so you could imagine how annoying this could be.
Can anyone please give me some advice?
    Windows 7
    10GB RAM
    64-bit

    Hello NBell_DF,
Please try to use other Windows 7 computer in the same network environment to see if they can normally remote desktop to the corresponding computers.
If they also have the same issue, it may be related to the network. And then use the command ping <destination IP> to check the network delay.
If other computer don’t have the similar issue, please update the network driver.
Additionally, we could choose your connection speed to optimize performance.

  • Portions of the screen do not refresh

Screen is white after screen saver goes to sleep.  Desktop does not refresh when keyboard is used to wake.  launching an app will show in the window of the app with rest of desktop still white.  started happening after OSX update.

Resetting the PRAM didn't fix it.
I believe the problem lies in the screen saver that is active when the screen sleeps. I was using a slideshow screen saver and had the white screen problem...once I changed to a generic screen saver such as flurry, the problem went away. Try that and report back here.
Obviously the OS is not freeing up the video memory used by the slideshow. I would venture to say the problem is a perfect storm of the particular video card, processor and a slideshow screen saver.

  • [SOLVED] xfce bold desktop icon text

    Hi!
I'm still using xfce 4.8 (gonna upgrade soon) and since about a week  i noticed that my desktop icon text is bold...this is quite annoying and i don't understand why, because i did not change anything.
There are no options about this behaviour and my system characters are not bold.
I have no ~/.gtkrc2.0 and in /etc/gtk2.0/gtkrc there is no reference to that.
Where can i look for a solution? Any ideas?
    Thanks!
