XFCE keyboard shortcut for volume change

Hello,
I'm running arch on my laptop and i'd like to use the +/- volume keys to change the xfce volume, Using xev the keys are recognised as XF86RaiseVolumeLevel - or something like that. The only problem is i don't know the command to assign in XFCE's keyboard options to this key combination, can anyone help?
Thanks a lot, Pete.

amixer -c 1 -- sset Master playback 1dB+
You could use that as a command I guess, just exchange the + with a - for opposite direction I believe.

  • How can I set up a custom keyboard shortcut for volume control?

    Hi all,
    I use my black MacBook at work, connected to an external monitor and external keyboard. I'm looking for a way to set up the F buttons on my external keyboard as volume control, just as they do on my laptop keyboard. Looking for F3 to F5 to be volume mute, down, and up, respectively.
    I tried going into Keyboard Shortcuts in System Preferences but since there is no menu item for volume control I can't seem to add it. Anyone know how I can go about doing this or what I'm missing?
    Thanks
    Mike

    paste the following into Applescrpt Editor (it's in /Applications/Utilities)
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    set curVolume to output volume of (get volume settings)
    -- work out the new setting
    if curVolume < 96 then
    set newVolume to curVolume + 5
    else
    -- can't go over 100
    set newVolume to 100
    end if
    -- and apply it
    set volume output volume newVolume</pre>
    this script will increase volume by 5 (out of 100) any time you run it. you can adjust this of course. save the script somewhere.
    You can use a 3rd part app launcher to bind a keyboard shortcut to it. I use Butler. there are many others: Quicksilver, ikeys, quickeys, Spark, Launchbar.
    this will work the fastest.
    If you don't want to use 3rd party tools for this you can make a service using automator but that might be a bit slower than the first option. open automator. it will give you a pulldown screen wiuth the choice of what you want to make. choose "service". set it to receive no input and be available in all applications. add the following "run apple script" action to the service
    <pre style="
    font-family: Monaco, 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;
    font-size: 10px;
    margin: 0px;
    padding: 5px;
    border: 1px solid #000000;
    width: 720px;
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #ADD8E6;
    overflow: auto;"
    title="this text can be pasted into the Script Editor">
    on run {input, parameters}
    set curVolume to output volume of (get volume settings)
    -- work out the new setting
    if curVolume < 96 then
    set newVolume to curVolume + 5
    else
    -- can't go over 100
    set newVolume to 100
    end if
    -- and apply it
    set volume output volume newVolume
    end run</pre>
    save the service, go to keyboard system preferences->keyboard shortcuts->services and make a shortcut for the service you just created.

  • Keyboard Shortcut for Volume Control

    Dear all,
    Is there a way to increase or decrease the volume using a keyboard shortcut?? Any help here will be much appreciated.

    Use the side edge volume controls.
    There's no keyboard controls that I know of, other than the # key might place your device on the Silent profile (or the top edge MUTE key )

  • Keyboard shortcuts for volume on MacBook

    I am using a MacBook with OSX version 10.5.8. I'd like to use the Volume buttons (F10, F11 and F12) in order to adjust my volume, but when I press them they only take me to Application windows, desktop and dashboard. I went to system preferences > Keyboard & Mouse and unchecked the options so that they wouldn't do that, but they still don't adjust the volume when I check them. How can I make it so that those three buttons adjust the volume?

    I'm having the same problem, running OSX 10.5.8 on a MacBook. Bought the wireless keyboard last month, have read through the discussions here, and none of the solutions work. Use all is unchecked, and the volume/screen brightness keys still don't work. Unchecking the keyboard preferences for F10, F11, F12 will prevent the keys from showing the dock/apps, but the keys still don't adjust the volume - they just become dead keys.
    Any further suggestions? It's a minor thing, but it does impact the ease of use and for the money spent on this keyboard, I'd expect the minor things to work.

  • Change Keyboard Shortcuts for sound volume

    I want to change the keyboard shortcut for changing the system sound/audio volume. There isn't an option in the Keyboard Shortcuts system preference pane. Does anyone know how to do this?

    Thanks for helping me think through this. My (likely circa 2001) iKey keyboard didn't come with software (at least that I would still use). My initial guess was that I programmed the keys through FastScripts, but quitting that didn't help.
    So, I looked back through the archives at MacOSXHints.com and found two options: I hadn't installed KeyRemap4Macbook, but I was still using ControllerMate. I had completely forgotten about that. Thanks for helping jog my memory.

  • How to change keyboard shortcut for cycle through open tabs in PS and AI CC 2014

    I would love to set my own keyboard shortcuts for cycling through open tabs in PS and AI 2014 on OS X. I found out that this can be achieved with ctrl+tab in PS, but I couldn't manage to make any of the suggestions in the forum work for AI. As said, I would like to set a more "standard" shortcut like alt+cmd+arrow-keys for both of the apps. If that shouldn't be possible, does anyone know a shortcut in AI CC 2014?
    Many thanks!
    Amadeus

    Thanks! The shortcut can be set like this in AI, although all key combinations I would want to use are not allowed. Too bad. But anyways, thank you very much for the tip!
    cmd+~ is not an option for me, I guess, since the swiss/german keyboard layout has no dedicated tilde key.
    So, I have a working shortcut in PS (ctrl+tab / of which I still don't know how to change, if possible at all) and thanks to you, I can now set one in AI as well. Unfortunately, I can not set it to be identical as in PS, since the "cmd" key needs to be included in AI's shortcut assignment dialogue, but I guess, this is as good as it gets.

  • How do I change the keyboard shortcut for Cycle through open documents in PS CC for Mac?

    Sorry to bug the community with such a seemingly inconsequential task, but I am seriously tired of using the awkward default keyboard shortcut for cycling through open docs in PS.  I'd like to change it to what I am used in in Chrome, which is Cmd+Option+[left] or {right} arrow keys.  I noticed this is not a command listed in the in keyboard shortcuts, for whatever reason.  Where on Earth can I change this?
    If it is not possible to do it by default, is there a plug-in or a change to the code that will allow this basic functionality?
    Thanks again guys and gals!

    As far as I know, you can't. It's "hard wired" in.  Not even Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts is allowed  to change it.
    However I did find this tip:
    Anyway i never found tabs in Adobe application useful, instead i prefer the old school method: simply switch off tabs feature via illustrator/ preferences/ user interface/ open documents as tabs. Then in Mac preferences panel, under keyboard, just search for the “focus on next application window” field (under menu, keyboard and text) and assign a shortcut if the default option doesn't fit you. And there is now you can easily switch between open documents!.
    The best part of this is that it can be used in all mac applications, not only Adobe ones. And remember, if you want this working on Indesign, Photoshop, etc be aware of first switch off the tab features so that the system could “see” multiple documents opened not only one single tabbed document.

  • Change keyboard shortcut for "Find"

    The default keyboard shortcut for the "find" function is Cmd-Opt-F. As you know, for virtually every other Mac app (if not all Mac apps), the shortcut for "find" is simply Cmd-F. In iTunes, though, Cmd-F turns the visualiser full-screen mode on and off. I never use the visualiser, and decades of Mac use have hard-wired my fingers for Cmd-F to be "find." I know that there is a method in System Preferences by which to change or assign associations between drop-down menu items and keyboard shortcuts, but there is no menu item for "find" so that method seems like a dead end.
    Is there a way to replace Cmd-Opt-F with Cmd-F in iTunes?
    Help, please!!!

    to be quite honest i dont no how exactly to do this,
    i just know it can be done. i have had no problem
    opening .plist files in vi-make sure you are in root
    account for system files.
    They (the .plist files) don't seem particularly readable in vi -- they seem to contain a lot of binary content. In earlier versions of OS X they were plain text and easily edited.....
    Solaris huh? how powerful
    is that? i dont know much about solaris . . . . like
    to try it though. recommendations?
    It's a more "traditional" Unix, meaning that it's very powerful, fairly bulletproof, very configurable, and pretty obtuse if you're not familiar with it. I like my Mac better!

  • Change keyboard shortcuts for zoom

    Hi
    When looking at the keyboard shortcuts for MAC, the 100% zoom is down as command alt '0', yet it is showing in the dropdown list as 'n'?
    Is there a way of changing the shortcuts. Previously the 100% zoom was simply command (apple) '0', which is now fit to page.
    Can anyone help with how to change the short cuts please?
    Cheers

    See http://forums.adobe.com/message/4947053?tstart=0
    There was a change to a bizarre shortcut of Fn+n for 'View > 100%' (equivalent to the previous 'View > Actual Pixels' which had shortcut Cmd+1) when Retina compatibility was introduced a few months ago.

  • Keyboard shortcut for change bars

    I have the pleasure (?!) of updating the technical content of a whole series of documents written originally by a bunch of people, and sending the results to yet another bunch of people for review. To help the reviewers identify where I've made changes, I use change bars. Great so far...
    However, while updating the original work I'm finding that I have to repair spelling, grammar and formatting errors too. The resulting change bars would be a real mess if I didn't turn them off for each of the minor repair jobs, so that they identified only the changes to technical content.
    According to the FM Help and other information sources, the ESC c h or the Ctrl+Shift+H keyboard shortcut sequences toggle change bars on and off, but in reality this doesn't happen. Does anyone know of a quick way to toggle change bars?

    > According to the FM Help and other information sources,
    > the ESC c h or the Ctrl+Shift+H keyboard shortcut sequences
    > toggle change bars on and off, but in reality this doesn't happen.
    They work for me. Perhaps they don't work the way you expect.
    If you want to turn off change bars, so that they're no longer
    applied when you make a change, you use "Esc o b" and turn
    the function off in the dialog that opens. Turn them on again
    in the same way.
    If you already have a change bar applied, and you want to
    delete it, then you can use Ctrl+Shift+H. The problem is that
    the shortcut toggles the change bars, and change bars is a
    character property. The easiest way to do it is:
    1. Select a range of characters bigger than where the
    change actually occurs. If possible, it's often easiest
    to select the entire paragraph.
    2. Press Ctrl+Shift+H *twice*. The first time, change
    bars are applied to all characters. The second time, the
    change bars are removed.
    Or, use the Find function to search for change bars,
    and then press Ctrl+Shift+H *once*. Since the search
    selects the exact characters where change bars are
    applied, you only need one press to remove them.

  • Disabling Keyboard Shortcuts for LDAP Accounts -Workgroup Manager...

    I work in a school and all our students are on LDAP accounts. Recently some of the kids realized that hitting Ctrl-Opt-CMD-8 inverts the screen display. You wouldn't believe the amount of havoc this has created at school, especially when they do it to a kid’s account that doesn't know how to fix it.
    Keyboard and Mouse are NOT one of the items under preferences for either groups or accounts in Workgroup Manager. Does anyone know if there is a way around this, or an alternate way of getting rid of the keyboard shortcuts for Universal Access, for either groups or accounts?
    Thanks
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Within the Workgroup Manager pane for Preferences, there is an option to manage Universal access. Within that section, there is a tab for 'Options'. You will want to change that management to 'Always' and leave the box for 'Allow Universal Access Shortcuts' UNchecked. This will, in effect, disable the usage of the shortcuts for a User or a selected Group account.
    Hope this helps out!!

  • How do I generate a list of keyboard shortcuts for any given application

    I want to generate a list of keyboard shortcuts for all of the applications I have on my Mac. I want the list to be a simple text (or rtf) file that I can edit and organize. (By edit, I don't mean change the shortcuts, only the report of them.)
    I was using Key Cue, but it does not let me save the list to a text file.
    I want this for several purposes. One is to have a easy to reference list of shortcuts to learn. Another is to find unused key combinations that I can use for my own keyboard shortcuts that I create with DefaultKeyBinding.dict.
    Note: The program doesn't have to an OS X app. A program that runs from a shell without a GUI is plenty adequate.
    If there is a way to read the keyboard commands from a plist list or other such file, and any of you know the format for these or where I can find them, I can write a Perl script myself to do it.

    Well, the info is stored in...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.universalaccess.plist
    PlistPro has a way to convert it to ASCII, but you'll srtill have work to do, as...

  • Keyboard shortcuts for text selection not working in Flash CC

    In the new Code Editor in Flash CC running on Mac OS X, most standard Keyboard Shortcuts for traversing through the text work as expected (as the Operating System works globally) but there is one that doesn't and it's I think the most important one.
    Hitting "OPTION + SHIFT + [right or left arrow keys]" to select words doesn't work. Hitting "OPTION + [right or left arrow keys]" works as expected, moving the cursor to the next word or break point, but adding shift doesn't do the selection.
    I don't understand why this changed since it's a basic OS global shortcuts, and every other program behaves the way it should. Flash CS6 running on the same system behaves fine, but Flash CC doesn't. If you have ever written code, you know that any second that a programmers hand doesn't have to leave the keyboard to search for the mouse is invaluable, and this has forced me to stop using Flash CC and use Flash CS6 to edit my Action Script classes becuase it's unusable otherwise.
    These shortcuts are also not listed in the keyboard shortcuts for the program, so I can't change the default behavior. Does anybody know if there's a way to set it back to the way it was before, or just disable special text shortcuts so that selecting text behaves like any other application in the operating system?

    Amy~ Yep the lasso tool was what I verified with another user. 'L' seems to be bound indefinitely to loop through different types of lasso tools and it was annoying them because they just wanted L to be the regular freehand lasso. I removed 'L' from being an option on the polygon lasso and even set it explicitly to SHIFT+L as well as set the lasso tool to a completely different keyboard combo. 'L' still cycled through lassos haha. It needs some fixes.
    fertolg~ At least you have a workaround for now. I'd go nuts if I couldn't use keyboard text selection writing code, oy! You're welcome and if you're all set please mark correct so we can filter unanswered. Good luck!
