XFCE not opening anything.... [SOLVED]

Hi,
I'm new to the arch world I've installed and been running for about a month.  I went with XFCE as my GUI everything went smooth sailing with the install.  But currently XFCE randomly will stop working if I have something open it will continue to work but if I try to open something new it does nothing.  If I close what I had open it want reopen it, it's like XFCE is froze but working.  I click on application menu and then select whatever nothing happens, even file manager doesn't work.  When i log out and back in everything runs fine is there any way i can trouble shoot this or is it a config i can make or maybe just switch to another GUI.  I really like XFCE but this is really annoying.

  • Preview Quit Unexpectedly, will not open anything...

I was trying to clean off some 3rd party font files to speed up the start-up boot process.  I erased the 2 font files that I had downloaded and now Preview will not open anything.  I have look at other "Preview Quit Unexpectedly" questions and have gone to the Library and deleted the suggested files, however, Preview will still not work with me.  Any suggestions?  It was literally working earlier today (opening pdfs, photos, etc.), until I deleted 3rd party font files (I did not erase native font files).

    Thanks.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.
When you post the log extract or the crash report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

No not really. If this is a brand new Macbook Pro take it back for a refund. Apple has a 14 day No Questions Asked return policy for Full refund.
Take it back, get the Full Refund (DO NOT LET THEM TRY TO FIX IT. YOU BOUGHT A NEW COMPUTER NOT ONE THAT HAS BEEN WORKED ON OR NEEDS TO BE FIXED) and then decide whether to buy another Macbook Pro or the iMac. Or you could return it, get the Full refund and buy some other brand computer.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

So, will Firefox just not open, or what exactly happens?
Try opening up Internet Explorer, going to [http://www.getfirefox.com www.getfirefox.com], click the big "Download Now" button. Then, click run. Install Firefox on your machine over your old install. This is just to make sure none of the components of Firefox are broken. All your old information will be saved.
Then, try to restart your PC and reopen Firefox. Does it work? If not, try starting it in [[Safe Mode]]. It is works there, it is likely that one of your extensions is broken. Read [[Uninstalling add-ons#w_how-to-disable-extensions0-personassf-and-plugins|How to disable extensions, Personas, and plugins]], and disable them one by one until you find the culprit.

  • Xfce not saving settings [solved]

Hello. I am having some trouble with xfce in my eee. I installed it on a fresh archlinux install following the wiki guidelines. However, when I run startxfce4 as a normal user, when logging out some permission dennied messages prompt. Iit says:
(xfce4-session:2470): libxfce4util-CRITICAL **: Unable to create base directory /root/.config/xfce4-session. Saving to file /root/.config/xfce4-session/xfce4-session.rc is likely to fail.
(xfce4-session:2470): libxfce4util-CRITICAL **: Unable to open file /root/.config/xfce4-session/xfce4-session.rc.2470.tmp for writing: permission denied
(xfce4-session:2470): libxfce4util-CRITICAL **: Unable to open file /root/.config/xfce4-session/xfce4-session.rc.2470.tmp for writing: permission denied

    (xfdesktop:2481): libxfcegui4-WARNING **: ICE I/O Error
Well, it seems to me that xfce is trying to save the configuration to some files located in /root, the superuser home directory. However, I have ran xfce as a normal user. Shouldn't it be saving the config to my /home folder instead? It looks like it is configured root to be the owner of xfce, if you get my point...
    Thanks

Are you sure when you followed the wiki you didn't run the /usr/lib/xfce/thunar... step as root? It mentioned running it as a user and not root.  It's worth a check.

  • My navigation bar will not open anything, when typed in

navigation bar is there and can be typed in but does not respond. Home page is open and can search thru search engine. Anything can be clicked on and open.
Also, the search engines bar is empty, and does not seem to respond to getting new ones.
I think this started when I updated to firefox 28.0

OK, so I still have the problem, but I am getting somewhere. I have allowed firefox original homepage to stay, plus added my own. So now 2 homepages open and all is well. My navigation bar works and also the search engine bar has search engines in it, of which firefox uses for its home page. BUT, if no
firefox is open and I click a link from say my email to open a page, then only

Hello crawford1968, your efforts are appreciated! Was there any physical or water damage on the phone? The factory reset is the last resort option. Have you tried letting the phone's battery drain and then charge the device to see if the power on will respond? We can definitely look into replacement options since the device is not responding.
