XFCE opening folders in Firefox instead of Thunar

If I do something like select Dropbox's "Open Dropbox Folder" or choose to "Open containing folder" of a downloaded file in Chromium, Firefox starts up and displays the folder contents (as a directory listing). This is baffling for a number of reasons: first, I have selected Thunar as my preferred file manager (choosing PCManFM does not fix this problem, either), and second, Chromium is selected as my default browser, not Firefox.
Any suggestions on what might be causing this and how I can address it? Thanks very much in advance!

You should give some more info when posting here, such as the desktop environment you use. This may help (discussion on xdg-open with no desktop environment, which i assume is the case here) : https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ch … nvironment

  • Open folders in tabs instead...not working

Finder Preferences > Checked Open forlders in tabs instead of new window
Open external drive, double click folder...no new tab unless pressing CMD.
I don t get it. No matter if I have the check box selected or not I get the same result. The logic would be that when you select that option ALL your folders would open in a new tab. It does not...what am I missing?
Also on some screenshots of Mavericks it seems for some people the finder option says "CMD-open folders in tabs..." instead, why is that?

Reinstalling the same version of Safari would have no effect. What I'm asking is whether there was a change in the behavior of the same version (not the same copy.) If there was, please link to a page that exhibits the change and specify exactly what it is.
It's normal for Safari not to open all links in a new window, regardless of settings. The effect of that setting is to open pages in a new window when the page code calls for them to open in a new tab. That's all.

  • Recently when I click on a link from an email, Firefox started opening a new Firefox instead of a tab. I have checked and my option is set to open a new tab

This happens in e-mail and also from other browser windows

Firefox includes options of how to handle different content types, in your case the mailto links are probably set to "Use Firefox". For details of how to fix this see [[Firefox keeps opening many tabs or windows]], in particular the section "Change the action for a content type".

  • Cannot open folders in NEW WINDOW

Is anyone else having trouble with the Finder not opening folders in a new window?  I have gone to Finder preferences, and unchecked the box for "Open Folders in a new tab..." But I still cannot open my folders in a new window.  I have thousands of folders, and some are set to open in icon view, some in list view, etc. depending on the contents.  But now all that has disappeared.  Any suggestions???

As others have said.....first, go to Finder > Preferences and make sure the checkbox is deselected for "open folders in tabs instead of new windows".
Any folder can be opened in a new window by holding down the Command Key while double-clicking the folder. But sooner or later you will forget to hold down that key, and then a folder will open in a tab (which will probably resize the window and cause much aggravation and cursing).
If you're like me and don't like tabs very much, there is a way to make folders always open in windows with a simple double-click. (I'm using Mavericks 10.9.5).  Go to any folder on the Desktop, open it, and select View > Hide Toolbar. After that, all folders within that folder will open in a new window. I tried this with the Macintosh HD Folder (which I put on my Desktop) and all folders within it open in new windows with only a double-click.
Of course, you will lose the sidebar and the toolbar, so it's not a perfect solution, but at least you'll be done with tabs.

  • Hello..i use firefox 4 beta 05..my question is..why when i open let's say 6 tabs..my windows show that i have 6 instancies of firefox instead of one like it does with firefox 3.6? thanks

hello..i use firefox 4 beta 05..my question is..why when i open let's say 6 tabs..my windows show that i have 6 instancies of firefox instead of one like it does with firefox 3.6? thanks
maybe i am saying it wrong..when i press alt+tab there is only one firefox open..but in windows 7 in the taskbar..every tab open..appears as another window open

If you are referring to taskbar previews, you can turn them off by modifying a hidden preference.
    # Type '''about:config''' into the location bar and press enter
    # Accept the warning message that appears, you will be taken to a list of preferences
    # In the filter box type '''previews'''
    # Double-click on the preference browser.taskbar.previews.enable to change its value to '''false'''

  • Can I open dock folders in tabs instead of new windows?

    Hey, guys!
I'm using OX 10.9 and in Finder Preferences I have "open folders in new tab instead of new window" box checked. However, when I click on "open in FInder" in a folder I have in my Dock, such as Dwonloads or Documents, it pops up in a new Finder window. In other words, I'm looking for the TotalFinder behaviour without using the app. Any help?
    Thank you all!

Hi, John, welcome to Apple's user-to-user discussion forums.
Does anyone here know of a way to open new windows without using command click in a tab?
If you want links on a web page to open in a new tab, you need to command-click on them. This will work both for links set up to open in the same window and those set up to open in a new window. There is no setting in Preferences to make links on a web page automatically open in a new tab.
There is a preference setting to open links from other programs, such as Mail, in a new tab. In Safari's Preferences, click on the General icon. Towards the bottom where it says "Open links from applications", check "in a new tab in the current window".

  • In Mac Mail 4.5, how do I set preferences so that when I click on an email link the webpage opens in Firefox instead of Safari?

I want to click on a link in an email and have the webpage open in Firefox instead of the default which is Safari.

    Hi roundabout-
I was able to see links in Mac Mail 4.5 open in Firefox. I had the Firefox application open, and when I clicked a link in the mail client it opened correctly. I'm sorry if this is not helpful. Is Firefox set as your preferred browser?

  • .pdf hyperlinks in word open in Internet Explorer instead of Firefox

I have website addresses copied and pasted into a word document, which automatically makes them a hyperlink. Normal website addresses open fine in firefox (which is my default browser) when I Ctrl+click on them. Web links to a .pdf, however, open Internet Explorer and then open in Adobe Acrobat inside Internet Explorer. How can I get .pdf links to open in Firefox when I Ctrl+click on them?

I have the same problem (roughly) - I have PDF hyperlinks in an Excel spreadsheet and, when clicked, instead of them opening directly in Acrobat (or via Firefox, my default browser), they open via IE. Regular HTML links in the Excel spreadsheet open in Firefox.
I have enabled the '''Block PDF files' access to all web sites''' option under ''Trust Manager'' category in the Adobe Reader ''Preferences'' tab.
I have also disabled the '''Adobe PDF Link Helper''' Extension in the ''Manage Add-ons'' tab in IE.
Obviously, neither of these settings made any difference.

    Hello David.
It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and themes and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.
If the problem is not disappears when all add-ons are disabled, please tell me, so we can work from there.

  • XSPF opens in Firefox instead of the default VLC

    Hello,
I've been googling a lot and couldn't find a solution to this. As the title suggests, the problem is this: when I open an XSPF playlist (the application/xspf+xml mime type), it opens in Firefox instead of the VLC player, which I've set as default for this filetype. I've made sure it's set in the KDE's Default Applications, I've chcecked the mime types in ~/.local/share/mime/, and I've also checked the /usr/share/mime. VLC is the default everywhere. What am I missing out?

  • Outside links open in firefox instead

Okay so if I click on a link in MSN or another program, it is opening in firefox instead of Safari. I have Safari set to my default browser too. If I uninstalled Firefox, the link is dead.
    Just need some iput. Thanks
    Windows Vista Ultimate 32-Bit

Well I've found out the problem. Safari doesn't show up in the Default Programs settings in Control Panel. Firefox and Internet Explorer are in there and are set for all the "FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, and GOPHER" file types. Can't be changed to Safari unless anyone has some ideas.
I tried changing the default to Internet explorer and it changed it as expected. So Safari just needs to show up in the settings somehow.

  • Have Firefox home page set for Google search, but each following tab opens w/Yahoo search instead. How do I remove the Yahoo and have Google home page on every tab????

As I said above: I Have Firefox browser home page set for Google search, but each following tab (but suddenly now it) opens w/Yahoo search instead. How do I remove the Yahoo search off the added tabs and have Google home page/ blank tab (like it used to be) on every tab????

The new Firefox Start Page - '''about:home''' - isn't the same homepage that was used in earlier versions of Firefox - http://www.google.com/firefox There is no "setting" for the "Search Container" on the about:home "page" - in the Options UI or in about:config .
Set that old "Mozilla Firefox Start Page" as your "homepage". <br />
    http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/How+to+set+the+home+page
Or open your Profile folder and delete the '''webappsstore.sqlite''' file and hope the "Search Container" on the about:home "page" returns to Google. When it '''''is''''' Google, the Google logo appears to the left of the "Search Container"; when the search engine there has been changed to something else, there is no logo to the left of the "Search Container" - AFAIK.

Openning a Link from MS Office OneNote 2007 launches MS Internet Explorer althoug FireFox is my default Internet browser. Any idea how to cause OneNote 2007 to Launch FireFox instead?

Below is how it is being done.  This worked perfectly for years. MS Office 2007 does complain that the file extension does not match the data format (it's a tab delimited text file but I'm pretending it's an Excel file so they'll be prompted to view it as a spreadsheet in Excel) but you just click open and it works fine.  This issue with IE is new.  Let me know if you have any more ideas.
