Xfce problems

Yesterday i shut my computer down like usually, since then only my sister has been logged in who claims she has not been doing anything but browsing (and her user is not in the wheel group anyway). I also have not updated my system yesterday. When i logged in today, xfce was starting longer than usually, my user defined keyboard shortcuts are not working and the logout button now does not offer logout/shutdown/... but switching off the xfce-panel.
Also firefox refuses to start with following error:
(firefox:19792): GLib-WARNING **: g_set_prgname() called multiple times
** ERROR **: Resource problem creating '/tmp/orbit-mjk'
aborting...
Neúspěšně ukončen (SIGABRT)
and cpu is heavily used by mysql...
I have no idea what these symptoms could be caused by nor whether they have anything in common...
I would be grateful if someone could help me or give me any directions
Thanks in advance
mjk

Not something silly like a full disk partition where /tmp lives?

• Conky autostart with xfce problem

I followed the instruction in the wiki for autostarting conky with xfce and put 'own_window_type override' in ~/.conkyrc and a desktop file in ~/.config/autostart/ folder. However, on start of xfce, there is conky while the screen is blank but conky disappears as soon as desktop is displayed. If I start conky after this, it shows very well. Where could be the problem?

• Gvim and xfce problems

I have funny (but extremely irritating) problem with gvim and xfce. Sometimes gvim window begins to shrink in vertical direction and I have no way to stop this.
+--------------------+
Gvim
+--------------------+

^
| | |
+--------------------+
Also from time to time the window is resized to a size that makes the last line of text visible only in half.
This seems to be a problem either with gvim or xfwm4, because it happens only when these two are used together. I also checked the oroborus window manager which xfwm4 claims to be based on. Behaviour is the same!
This is problematic because I don't know whose fault is this - gvim or wm.
Did you experience the same problem?

rehcra wrote:
A screenshot would be just eyecandy in this case. To see what's the problem, an ANIMATION would be needed. After the Gvim is mapped to the screen it shrinks LINE BY LINE until there is only one line of text visible. This process takes about 2 seconds.
Here is the ANIMATION:
frame #1:
+------+
abc
123
def
ghi
+------+
frame #2:

abc
123
def
+------+
frame #3:
+------+
abc
123
+------+
frame #4:
+------+
abc
+------+
This is annoying, because I need to WAIT a few seconds for this to end and then resize manually the window.
I hope you understand now. Try it yourself (xfce+gvim or oroborus+gvim)!
you can save an animation (video) from X by using xvidcap (in extra)
i use vi in an aterm in xfce4 and have no problems ... and now i tried gvim to try to reproduce your trouble, but i cannot reproduce

• Xfce problems - some menu icons gone [solved]

Hello all,
I normally use XFCE, but briefly installed the Gnome packages just to try it out again, but ran into some troubles in XFCE after I decided to uninstall Gnome...
It seems some menu icons and icons in the "Settings" window were lost...no big deal but it's ugly. How do I rebuild these again? I tried reinstalling XFCE but with no results.
Thanks.

• Vim+gnome terminal+xfce - problem after last update

I use vim in the tabbed gnome terminal in the xfce4 desktop.
After todays update I have serious problem with editing file.
I see rendering artifacts, mixed syntax colors, I can fix it with redrawing vim screen or resizing terminal.
Have you noticed something similiar?

Fixed with vte 0.16.4-2. vte was rendering uninitialized things on the screen, making random alienated things appearing in your terminal.

• [SOLVED] Xfce problems

Hi!
I tried to replace LXDE with Xfce4 today. I installed the Xfce core packages like suggested in the wiki:
# pacman -S xfwm4 xfce4-panel xfdesktop thunar xfce4-session xfce4-settings xfce4-appfinder xfce-utils xfconf
I can start Xfce with "startxfce4", but then I get this message:
'Plugin "Launcher" unexpectedly left the panel, do you want to restart it?'.
I can only remove it from the panel; but then I can't start any program... which doesn't make make computer very useful!
If I log out of Xfce, I get a lot of text on my screen, of which these parts seems to me the most important:
xfdesktop: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgarcon-1.so.0: undefined symbol: g_slist_free_full
and:
(xfce-panel: 1529): xfce-panel-CRITICAL **: Failed to load module "/usr/lib/xfce4/panel/plugins/liblauncher.so": /usr/lib/libgarcon-1.so.0: undefined symbol: g_list_free_full
(There could be one or more typo's in the code above; I had to write it down on a piece of paper, and then type it in this post...)
What do I do from here??

Make sure the mirror you are using is up to date and then try doing a full system update to bring all packages up to the most recent version.

• [SOLVED] xfce+slim, suspend to RAM causes black and white strips

I recently installed a fresh copy of Arch. When I click the "suspend to RAM" xfce button the screen turns off as it should, but when I try to resume I see 5 columns of black and white stripes (like a flattened checkerboard ). Alternatively when I click the "suspend to disk" (hibernate) button the screen turns black but the backlight is still on, the only way to get out of this state is to do a force shutdown with the button.
I don't know if this is just an xfce problem, or if slim is also part of the problem, but it doesn't hurt to let you guys know about that as well.
Reading about this problem somewhere else as a probably graphics driver issue, here's my graphics card:
NVIDIA Corporation G72M [Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300] (rev a1)
and I installed the Nvidia nouveau driver from here. I didn't see anything on that page about this kind of issue.
I also tried to add "ck-launch-session dbus-launch" to my .xinitrc file, I knew it probably wasn't the solution but I wanted to try anyways. didn't work.
I also have 2 gigs of RAM and 3 gigs in swap partition.
What do you guys think?

I have a slight newbie question that's related to my problem: after installing pm-utils am I supposed to have a file /etc/pm/config.d/modules? I reread the docs on suspend and standby here and the instructions are implying I should already have such a file, (since they say to modify it rather than create it), but I've installed and reinstalled the pm-utils and don't have any file there.
It's kind of important too, since i'm thinking I should put my graphics driver as one of those suspended modules...
Edit: one more interesting tid bit, when I use "pm-suspend" in the tty command line (by disabling the slim service and never going to xfce) I suspend fine. I need to have root privileges but I can just use sudo. (this is another reason why it could be a graphics card issue or I guess a privileges issue, hmm)
Edit2: I just tried to login as root from slim and hitting the suspend button, but got the same issue. So it's likely not a privileges issue. Strange.

• [XFCE] wrong window border with 2 monitors

Hey Guys,
a week ago I bought a new monitor and now have a 2 monitor setup on my computer. I'm using a Nvidia graphic card with the proprietary drivers (v302.17-1) and set up these monitors to use separate X servers (two monitors, 2 devices and 2 screens in my xorg.conf). And it works: I can open applications on both monitors separately. Except the fact, that after a logout or reboot, the window border of the primary monitor is reset to some default (seems to be the previous theme I used). I tested this behavior with multiple themes. The panels and the whole second monitor use the configured theme. When re-configure XFCE to use the theme I want, also the primary monitor will use it. But its annoying to do this after every login.
Does anyone have a clue why this is happening, or how to fix it? While researching I read a lot about XFCE problems with 2 monitor setup.
Greetz Corubba
EDIT: I found a little workaround for this. I just added
xfconf-query -c xsettings -p /Net/ThemeName -t string -s Xfce-4.6
xfwm4 --replace &
to my xinitrc. It set the name of my theme and cause the wm to redraw with the new theme.

• Xfce menu missing icons

Topic says it all, here's a screenshot.  Thoughts on how to fix it are welcomed

R00KIE wrote:The icon package that comes with xfce is broken, it's a upstream xfce problem, not arch's problem if you were starting to wonder.
I believe that what you may want as a quick fix is to do 'pacman -S tango-icon-theme tango-icon-theme-extras gnome-icon-theme'.
These packages provide all the icons you need for the menus and system icons, just tango-icon-theme would do (and that was the fix pointed out when this version of xfce came out) but there would be one or two missing icons here and there.
I had the same problem last night. The xfce4 wiki said to do ^, and that's what worked for me.

• XFCE video flickering..

Whenever I play a video file in XFCE [with compositing on] there are horizontal lines, don't know how to explain it, the screen flickers when there's a lot of movement or fast motion in the video. i have faced this problem in both arch and gentoo. So I'm thinking this is a xfce problem. Any ideas?
EDIT: I just turned off compositing by going to Settings->Window manager tweaks and the flickering vanishes. Is there anyway to solve this problem without permanently turning off compositing? Like switching composite on / off easily. Or ask xfce to ignore certain apps from using compositing.
Last edited by sHyLoCk (2009-09-03 08:59:06)

You say mplayer, have you tried smplayer as a frontend and select xv as the video output? May not solve anything, I'll try compositing and videos and I'll post back if I get tearing with compositing enabled.
I don't have the composite section in my xorg.conf but xdpyinfo still reports Composite as an extension .... does this mean that have it enabled anyway or is there any way other way to check for it? Just so I'm not reporting completely useless results.
Edit:
Same thing here too, with compositing enabled videos are more choppy and there is very visible tearing, with compositing disabled then all is well.
ATI radeonhd2400 with xf86-video-ati-git drivers here and of course also using xfce :d .

• Xfce4 Can't Start File Manager or Settings w/Non-Super User

This is possibly a very stupid question, but I've been weeding through the forums and the wiki for a couple of hours now to no avail.  I've just installed Xfce and have it working in conjunction with GDM.  I can login just fine with my non-root account, but then I'm unable to adjust the Settings or load the File Manager as I am able to do when I login using root.
In the case of trying to load the Settings dialog box, I click on the icon in the panel, and it does absolutely nothing.  When I click on the File Manager icon, however, an hourglass appears as if it is trying to load, but then after about 30 seconds the hourglass disappears and nothing opens.
I have installed Firefox, and it works just fine under either account, and so I'm thinking it may be a simple permissions/groups problem...any thoughts?

The ownership of both the .cache and .config directories for some reason belonged to root and not my user.  I completely wiped out those directories, and restarted Xfce while logged into my account and it seems to be working now.  Thanks for the help xerverius.
On a side note, I also noticed that the .local directory is also owned by root and not myself.  There is nothing in it currently but a share directory, but does the ownership need to be changed for this as well?  It's completely unrelated to the Xfce problem, but I thought it was a little strange...

• ACPI battery level stops updating

Hello,
I have a strange problem with battery level (displayed using xfce4-power-manager). At startup it updates but not very precisely (not percent by percent), after some minutes  it stops updating.
I thought it was an xfce problem, so I installed xfce4-power-manager-git. But reading acpi status and getting /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/ info reports same results as xfce. ACPI does not update battery level!
Why acpi stops updating my battery level?
I'm using kernel 3.15.10-1
xfce4-power-manager-git
xfce4-power-manager 1.4.1-1
upower 0.99

No one interested about this problem?
Now, to get battery level I'm manually polling using a cron job executing acpi -V command...
I've not yet found another solution to get battery level update working.

• [Solved] Xfce4: windows stopped remembering their position

I made an update yesterday and since then all my programs stopped remembering their window position. Sonata for example was positioned at x=360, y=0, but now whenever I close Sonata the position gets reset to 0, 0 (upper left corner).
Any ideas what's wrong?

Not an Xfce problem, I'm using gnome with openbox and I get the same behavior since the update.
If I'm not mistaken it only happens with applications that have a system tray icon.
Hide Pidgin's buddy list in tray and then open it up again and the window forgets its previous position, same with Sonata.

• Strange mouse click behaviour, (GTK?) buttons don't work

Hey,
I have had this problem since the last major upgrade, which included Kernel, Xfce, Xorg. Sadly I can't pinpoint this problem, that's why I wanted to ask if anybody else has the same problem and they have figured out what the cause is.
Essentially this mostly happens with the Xfce panel, while clicking on a Laucher button. I click on a button, which works, then release mouse1, but then the button seems to be still pressed, as if mouse1 was not released. When the mouse leaves the area, the button "pops up" again, but when hovering over the button again, it looks like pressed again, even though it's not.
That's not all that bad, but what happened recently, is while using Eclipse some (very random) buttons simply won't work at all. All this while they seem pressed, even though mouse1 has been released. I then have to use the keyboard to activate the button.
I don't mind the Xfce problem so much, but I need Eclipse for work, and it just can't be the solution that I have to use the Keyboard when a button doesn't seem to work. The problem seems to be limited to button-like (including Tabs) GTK GUI elements. No problem with Qt yet.
This is a laptop computer, with a normal touchpad and a USB mouse attached to it.
And my mouse is NOT broken, as I have tested with a number of different mice and even other OSes on the same machine with same hardware configuration!
Thanks,
m.

This may be related to the issue where buttons in Flash embeds don't work. You can probably 'fix' the issue by downgrading gtk2 to 2.16.5.
## Actually maybe not. Meh.

• Problem with xfce and/or mouse and keyboard

Hi!
Two days ago I've turned on my laptop with Arch and the display manager Slim has frozen immediately. Later on Single-User mode I've uninstalled it. Now in normal mode when I type "startxfce4" everything is showing up, but the mouse and keyboard don't work. I know it's not frozen, because animation of mouse and CPU Frequency Monitor is on.
Strange fact is that laptop is not connecting with the Internet, so now I don't know where the problem is.
It's happening when I start xfce both from user and super user.
Just before those troubles I've updated everything with "pacman -Syu", but I haven't seen anything strange. Also the computer could have been roughly turned off (by unplugging power supply), when was turning on.
Thanks,
Gaba

Sorry for not replying, but I didn't have access to my laptop by this time.
On grub I have only normal mode and 'fallback' mode, so I have result from 'journalctl' from normal mode.
I'm sending the fragment of this file where you can see everything after I typed 'startxfce4' in console:
http://codepad.org/8pYIj8qC
I see that something is wrong, but after some attempts I don't know how to fix this ^^
Edit:
Oh, I forgot to write, that I've tried activate some drivers from 'lspci -k' (there were no "Kernel driver in use:..." in almost every device), but it didn't fi anything.
