Xfce4 and Openbox

Okay all,
I tried searching, didn't have any luck, so here goes:
I'm following along with the Wiki here to configure Xfce to run with Openbox.  The Wiki says:
Log into a normal Xfce4 session. From your terminal, type:
$ killall xfwm4 ; openbox & exit
This kills xfwm4, runs Openbox, and closes the terminal. Log out, being sure to check the "Save session for future logins" box. On your next login, Xfce4 should use Openbox as its window manager.
When I do this, Xfce flickers for a moment as the terminal closes and sends me back to the desktop, but nothing has changed.  I then proceed to log out, checking the box as instructed, and log back in.  However, Xfce does not use Openbox as the window manager when I do this.
When I run:
$ ps aux | grep -E '(openbox|xfwm4)'
It returns:
username 2210 1.5 0.2 137084 9204 tty1 S 02:12 0:00 xfwm4 --display :0.0 --sm-client-id ...
I've tried this several times without luck.  I have ObConf installed already, and also installed Xfce4 (and was able to get it to load properly using startxfce4, naturally) as well as Openbox (the installation order went Xfce4, Openbox, ObConf in case it matters.)
Any idea what the issue might be?
If I run just
$ killall xfwm4 ; openbox
(ie, without the exit), I receive the message
A window manager is already running on screen 0

I have tried both of your above methods, here's the results:
openbox --replace
When I do this, it doesn't return control to me in the terminal, so I have to CTRL-C out of it, at which point Openbox isn't running anymore.
So, I modified it to:
openbox --replace &
Now, when I do this, it starts Openbox (the window styling changes obviously), and returns:
[1] 1687
Then, running
ps aux | grep -E '(openbox|xfwm4)'
returns
eric 1687 0.0 0.1 96800 7940 pts/0 S 20:09 0:00 openbox --replace
which indicates Openbox is now running properly.
So, then I proceed to logout using the menu option, and I check the box for "Save session for future use.".  Upon logout, I see the following warnings:
// typical X.org startup information
(xfce4-panel:1660): Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type _OB_WM_ACTION_UNDECORATE
(xfce4-session:1653): Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type _OB_WM_ACTION_UNDECORATE
Upon running
startxfce4
again, my desktop returns, however my cursor has turned to a black X, and the desktop icon for Home is now partially covered by the top toolbar.  Additionally, when I start a terminal, the top of the terminal is actually overlapping with the menu and part of it is off the screen to the top.
Running
ps aux | grep -E '(openbox|xfwm4)'
reveals that neither xfwm4 nor openbox is running.
So, then if I run
openbox &
I can then at least click the top menu bar and move the terminal back fully onto the screen.  If I click "X" for the terminal, it hides the terminal but it does not disappear from the application bar.  If I then logout, I see the following warnings:
// typical X.org startup information
xfdesktop[1661]: starting up
xfce4-settings-helper: Another instance is already running. Leaving...
(xfce4-settings-helper:1663): xfce4-settings-helper-WARNING **: Failed to get the _NET_NUMBER_OF_DESKTOPS property.
xfce4-panel: No window manager registered on screen 0. To start the panel without this check, run with --disable-wm-check.
(xfce4-panel:1660): Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type _OB_WM_ACTION_UNDECORATE
(xfce4-session:1653): Wnck-WARNING **: Unhandled action type _OB_WM_ACTION_UNDECORATE
When I run
startxfce4
again, it returns to the previous issue where my desktop shows but the cursor is a black X and the icons and toolbar overlap, and neither xfwm4 nor openbox is running.
If, instead of running
openbox &
when I have no window manager, I instead run
xfwm4
it returns to normal (terminal closes properly, nothing is overlapping), and when I logout, I see the following warnings:
// typical X.org startup information
xfdesktop[1661]: starting up
xfce4-settings-helper: Another instance is already running.
When I next run
startxfce4
everything loads properly (read, it loads normally as it did before I replaced xfwm4 with Openbox, so there are no errors with overlapping icons and menu bars and the terminal actually closes), and there are no warning messages displayed on logout.
So, what gives?

  • [SOLVED] Best Practice for systemd, udisks, udev, polkit,and openbox

    I have to admit I am stymied here.  I have been in the wiki and forums most of the day and am just not finding the solution here.
    I have both udisks and udisks2 installed
    I am running a pure systemd
    I do not use a login manager
    I use startx that has a switch clause based on an environmental variable to pick the environment I want.
    For now, let's limit this to xfce4 and openbox.
    I used to be able to log in and mount usb and SD volumes using Thunar, Dolphin, and palimpsest.  I can no longer do that; I receive an error indicating I've not the proper privileges.
    Even more fun, I log into a console and use udiskie, and can mount volumes without issue.
    I start X with startx, launch a terminal program, and udiskie will no longer allow me to mount.  I can read volumes mounted by udiskie before I started X.
    I have tried various combinations of ck-launch-session, dbus-launch in concert with openbox-session and startxfce4.  Nothing allows me to automount as a normal user.  This used to work, but something has gone south, but I am not clear when.
    Anyone have suggestions for a stable solution here?
    A couple files as they exist right now:

    Are you starting X onto the same vt you logged into i.e. startx -- vt1 for tty1 or startx -- vt$(fgconsole) (or falconindy's xserverrc) for a more general case?   If you don't, systemd-logind cannot keep track of the session and the -kit permissions will thus break.
    You can see sessions using loginctl:
    └$ loginctl
    SESSION UID USER SEAT
    1 1000 zekesulastin seat0
    4 1000 zekesulastin seat0
    2 sessions listed.
    You can see information about your sessions using loginctl show-session $num - the session must be Active:
    └$ loginctl show-session 4
    Id=4
    Timestamp=Sun, 14 Oct 2012 23:18:56 -0400

    VTNr=1
    TTY=tty1
    Remote=no
    Service=login
    Leader=12771
    Audit=4
    Type=tty
    Class=user
    Active=yes <-- This must be "yes"
    State=active

    IdleSinceHint=1350271136064237
    IdleSinceHintMonotonic=49646611251
    Name=zekesulastin
    (I personally have a conditional in bash_profile to exec startx -- vt1 if I log in on tty1.)

  • [Solved]Cannot startx on fresh install with xfce4 and nvidia-304xx-lts

    I just installed Arch base onto my system with my Nvidia GTS 250 Graphics card, however I am unable to start a x session after installing xfce4 and nvidia-304xx-lts followed by the command nvidia-xconfig and reboot.  When I try to issue startxfce4 I get an error pointing to /var/log/Xorg.0.log as follows

    The first code block contains my Xorg.0.log however I just tryed modprove nvidia and recieved FATAL: Module nvidia not found. which I discovered was solved by someone here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=961852 however when I tryed to do a pacman -S nvidia nvidia-utils I get a unresolved confilict with nvidia-304xx-utils which after trying to remove with pacman -Rs shows dependencies with cario, Im not sure how far back I should start removing things to solve this conflict or how to go abouts solving it
    +++++++++
    Update: Solved
    +++++++++
    I did some more looking and found I could force the uninstall of nvidia-304xx-lts with pacman -Rdds nvidia-304xx-lts and after revisiting the Nvidia page on the wiki for the dozenth time I started thinking maybe I needed nvidia-304xx oposed to the lts release as google as kindly pointed out lts is long term support and maybe my kernel was not lts and thus conflicting.  This turned out to be the case, after removing the ofending lts version of the driver, replacing with the correct nvidia-304xx , another nvidia-xconfig and reboot followed by modprobe nvida and startxfce4 my wounderfull xfce is now running as I type this messsage in firefox.  Thank you for you help, as you asking about the modprobe output caused the chain of events leading to the success.

  • KDE and openbox on separate screen?

    Hi,
    Please is there a way to run KDE on :0.0 and openbox on :0.1? I am trying in .xinitrc:
    DISPLAY=:0.1 exec ck-launch-session openbox --replace &
    DISPLAY=:0.0 exec ck-launch-session startkde
    It works fine until KDE starts and after a few secs "overlays" openbox on the second screen.
    Perhaps if there was something like the compiz switch --only-current-screen ...
    Thanks a lot for any help.

    Well, the weird thing is that openbox keeps working "in the background", although visually "overwritten" by KDE. When openbox is not started in xinitrc, "DISPLAY=:0.1 wmctrl"  cannot control windows on the second screen, complaining about missing window manager. However, at the same the KDE background is displayed on :0.1, also KDE local menu by right clicking on the secondary desktop works. When Openbox is started on :0.1, KDE "occupies" the screen visually in the same way, but wmctrl can interact with the openbox  in the "layer below". Interesting and very buggy :-)

  • Avant window navigator and Openbox problem

    Hi,
    I have a problem with AWN and Openbox.
    AWN are showing only in Desktop 1 of Openbox. If I change desktop, AWN not are showing...
    Can I solve this problem?
    Thanks.

    Put this at the end of your ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml:
    <application name="avant-window-navigator">
    <desktop>all</desktop>
    </application>

  • XFCE4 and Compiz in virtualbox on a mac

    Ok so i have a 2010 macbook pro with an Nvidia 9600 GPU a core 2 duo 2.6GHz and 4GB of ram and i am trying to run an Arch computer in Virtualbox using XFCE4 and Compiz to prove how flashy yet relatively light weight the combination can be.. i believe i installed Vbox guest additions on the machine but i can't change the resolution from 1024x768 and for whatever reason when i try to use compiz-fusion for compositing it seems not to give me any window decorations (yes its enabled and emerald is installed) and when it does i can't use them or move windows around.. XFCE works fine without it and on my ubuntu laptop with the same processor and amount of memory i got KDE4 with compiz running no problem.. any ideas? i could really use help, if you would like my configs i could post them if you'd like.

    This may not help because it doesn't relate directly to using a Vodafone Internet Key but I suppose its worth a shot. I had a network problem with my Arch on Mac via Virtualbox install. I could connect via wi-fi at home no problem but if I tried to connect anywhere else, like the library or at a cafe, it wouldn't work. I fixed this problem by switching the "Attached to:" setting under Virtualbox's network settings to Bridged Adapter. Maybe you could try messing with those settings and see if it fixes the problem.

  • Xfce4 and gnome-network-manager [solved]

    quoted from a previous thread
    I solved it by uncommenting my <locale><charset> in /etc/locale.gen.
    First you have to enable the locales you want being supported by your system. To enable or disable them, the file /etc/locale.gen is used. It contains every locale you can enable, and you have just to uncomment lines you want to do so.
    As we want to setup an english UTF-8 conform system, we want to enable en_US.UTF-8. But for compatibility to programs that don't support UTF-8 yet, it's recommended to support any other locale, prefixed with en_US as well. Having this in mind, we enable this set of locales:
    en_US.UTF8 UTF-8
    en_US ISO-8859-1
    After you've enabled the necessary locales, you have to run locale-gen as root to update them:
    # sudo locale-gen
    Generating locales...
    en_US.UTF-8... done
    en_US.ISO-8859-1... done
    Generation complete.

  • Roboto font not available in certain applications and Openbox menu

    I have downloaded Roboto TTF font from here and saved it in ~/.fonts.
    After downloading it, I ran:
    $ fc-cache -vf
    After that, I changed the font in lxappearance and obconf and every single application I have tried so far uses it by default now except Openbox menu (window titles seem to work just fine) and Geany.
    What can I do to fix this?
    I really like the font and pretty much everything runs well except those two.
    Note: tried placing those files in /usr/share/fonts/local, but nothing changed.

    Tried to switch fonts in terminal (rxvt-unicode) and apparently that font is not available there either.
    Any ideas?

  • Xfce4 and dual screen issues

    I have setup dual screen in xfce4, i have added
    xrandr --output VGA --left-of LVDS
    to xfce4 startup apps. But the issue is that both screen defaults to 1024x768 and if it change the resolution to the correct one my laptop screen turn black. This is some what the similar kind i issue i face in kdemod4 but gnome work ok with with the above command.

    What video card?
    What drivers?

  • Gnome 2.24 and openbox

    Hello,
    after upgrading to gnome 2.24 I noticed that I can't use openbox anymore to replace metacity.  The openbox/gnome session in gdm doesn't seem to work anymore.
    Once I'm in my Desktop Environment I can run 'openbox --replace' and this gives me my beloved openbox WM.  Problem is Gnome doesn't save the 'openbox' session so when I logout/login it's metacity again.  I solved it now to put a 'openbox --replace' command to my 'start up programs' (system > preferences > sessions), but ther should be a better solution.
    Does anybody have an idea?
    Regards,
    Roel

    This should work

  • XFCE4 and Volume OSD

    I have notify-osd-xfconf-bzr and xfce4-volumed installed.  I get notifications for brightness and if I use
    notify-send testing
    notifications show up as well.  However, I get no notifications when I adjust the volume using my keyboard keys.  I bound the keys using the XFCE4 keyboard settings.
    Any help would be great. Thanks!

    Have you tried xfce4-notifyd + xfce4-volumed ?
    It works for me.

  • GDM and OpenBox - Wallpaper and background problem [SOLVED]

    I have a strange problem.
    I am using GDM as login manager. And I am using OpenBox as a window manager.
    As soon as GDM appears on the screen, my wifi connection is connected... so its good.
    But, when I login Feh loads my background picture and it disappears after few seconds..... I solved this modifying the autostart script (adding the sleep).
    Now background stays, BUT not always. Sometimes it disappears.... sometimes not.
    It seams that this problem is appearing randomly.
    So my question is:
    Is there a way to disable Gnomes (GDMs) background color and picture after loading openbox through GDM?

    azleifel wrote:
    It will apply to gnome as well, so if gnome-settings-daemon is your problem then you either need to choose one environment or perhaps do some settings adjustment with gconftool-2 when you log into each environment.  I didn't try this but settings for openbox could be changed with a couple of gconftool-2 lines in autostart.sh, e.g.
    gconftool-2 --set --type bool /desktop/gnome/background/draw_background "false" &
    and settings for gnome could be changed from a DE-specific ("OnlyShowIn=GNOME") .desktop file or two in $HOME/.config/autostart.
    I tried this, but it didnt work. Its a Gnome 3.
    I dont understand second part of your post... ("OnlyShowIn=GNOME")

  • Keymapping problem when working with emacs and openbox

    I have an apple keyboard and I had to do some remapping of the keys to make the mod-4 key the first key to the left of the space bar for when working with Emacs.  The below script worked fine when I was using the dwm window manager, but after switching to openbox I have found that instead of swapping keycodes between the option and command keys, only the command key seems to be working since the initial openbox command-space doesn't work when pressing option-space.
    One odd thing I noticed, was on the new setup when I click run `showkey` and press the option and command keys I get 56 and 125 respectively, but these keys don't work at all when inserting them into the below script instead of the 64 and 133.
    I must admit I created the script below by continually tweaking it until it worked so there could be a much better way of doing it.
    //.xmodmap
    ### capslock => ctrl
    xmodmap -e "clear Lock"
    xmodmap -e "add Control = Caps_Lock"
    ### switch alt and command
    xmodmap -e "keycode 64 = Alt_L"
    xmodmap -e "keycode 133 = Meta_L"
    ### remap of mod 4
    xmodmap -e "clear Mod4"
    xmodmap -e "add Mod4 = Super_L"
    ** Update:  The Alt key is not being swapped with the command key, but is not just a duplicate.  So no M-x can be done by both Alt-x and Command-x
