Xfce4 install wiped out ld.so.conf???

I reinstalled Arch on 3/7 to go back to JFS from ReiserFS (also, prior install was x86_64, current is i686). I use both KDE and Xfce4, but didn't reinstall Xfce4 until 3/12, at 16:09, according to pacman.log.
I did a pacman -Syu yesterday (I *never* go more than a week w/o doing so, and rarely more than 2 or 3 days). The 2 main updates were qt3 (3.3.8-6.1 -> 3.3.8-7) and kdelibs (3.5.9-1 -> 3.5.9-2).
I fire KDE back up, and I have *no* icons, either on the desktop OR taskbar. None. Mousing over the taskbar showed all the prior entries were still there (including K Menu), and I had no problems running anything, either from the taskbar or K Menu, by clicking on the 'blank' icon (K Menu ALSO had no icons, but still had the text for all entries). Additionally, I had a LOT of random splotches of color (mostly bright green) here and there (including either just in front of, or just behind, ALL the text entires in K Menu). This wasn't a showstopper, just a nuisance. The system seemed to work fine overall. Note KControl ALSO had no icons, but was fully functional as far as I went with it.
I downgraded kdelibs first (seemed the logical thing to do). I fire up KDE, no change. I downgrade qt3. Fire KDE back up; everything is as it should be. All icons there, no random splotches of color; exactly as things were before the first pacman -Syu above. But I was quite curious as to what had happened.
Something (sorry, I can't recall what now) prompted me to inspect /etc/ld.so.conf. To my astonishment, it contains:
# /etc/ld.so.conf
# End of file
Further, it's dated 3/12, 16:09, matching the timestamp of the Xfce4 install. ???
/etc/ld.so.cache is dated 3/28 14:30, which matches the pacman.log timestamp when I downgraded qt3 (although I never SAW an ldconfig run, nor is it noted in pacman.log). Bizarrely, my system seems to run just fine!
My archived /etc/ld.so.conf is, unfortunately, from a x86_64 install and full of lib32 entries:
# /etc/ld.so.conf
/usr/X11R6/lib
# End of file
/usr/lib/libfakeroot
/opt/kde/lib
/opt/qt/lib
/opt/lib32/lib
/opt/lib32/usr/lib
/opt/lib32/opt/qt/lib
/opt/qt/lib
Should I simply remove the lib32 (and X11R6, and the dup /opt/qt/lib) entries from this file and overwrite my empty ld.so.conf with it, and re-run ldconfig? Could someone share their current ld.so.conf so I could compare?
WHY is my system running without a hitch? I'm truly baffled at that! And why did the Xfce4 install (ver 4.4.2-1, still the current ver) apparently wipe out my ld.so.conf? Searching the 'Desktop Environments' forum found: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=45663 - which was never replied to. Searching the forums by keyword (Xfce4, qt3, ld.so.conf - each, individually) shows nothing further. ???

Thanks, tigrmesh. I'm going to try that now. Will report back shortly.
Edit: Well, no harm done, apparently, at least. It sure seems like I had more than 3 lines in ld.so.conf previously, but I do appear to be running OK. Will update if I notice anything, but no need to fix something that doesn't appear broken.
And thanks again tigrmesh. This is one of the weirder things that's ever happened to me using Linux - any variant! Take care.
Edit2: Looking through pacman.log, I find that I upgraded to the current version of filesystem (2008.03-2) on 3/11 at 9:09 (prior to my Xfce4 install). It had been updated twice previously, and I notice that both prior times, mkinitcpio was run at the same time; it was NOT run at the time of the upgrade to 2008.03-2. Wondering if that has anything to do with this, and if I should manually run mkinitcpio?

  • Installing Maverick wiped out my Outlook contacts.  How do I get them back?

I installed Maverick and it wiped out my contacts in Outlook.  I have been automatically backing up with time machine but it won't restore from my previous points.  I can see them there but when I click restore they don't show up in Outlook.  There must be a way to restore them from time machine?

    Hello Clinton,
I have been working with this proble since last Wednesday and because of my schedule at the end of this week I wasn't able to try what you suggested until late last night.  Restoring the User Data as you suggested did not work.
I think I found the contacts in a saved Time Machine backup from earlier this week but can't get it to restore.
I don't know why the Maverick install wiped out my data.  I am using an iMac and have been using Microsoft Office for Mac from the beginning.  The update for Maverick came up on Thursday and I installed it.  The install went smoothly, no hang up or problem questions.  I believe it took just over an hour.  After the system automatically restarted I opened Outlook to check my email.
I had to completely start from scratch and set up my email addresses again.  The Outlook data for my Outlook Contacts was missing all but my individual contact.  All of the other contact data is missing.
This is a very big deal to me.  I always assumed I could restore it through the Time Machine backups that go onto external hard drives.  I rotate to the next one every month or so.  The backup seems to be fine.
I have been able to restablish my emails and so far everything else on the Mac seems to be ok.  But for some reason I can't get me data back into the contact section of my Outlook database.
If you have any suggestions I would be willing to try about anything right now.  Thankx for helping...........Pitt

  • Iphone4 would not restore Error -50. I have tried to restore and it restored it to the point that it created after 5.0 was installed. How can I get it an older restore point from my backups and restore it on another computer? The phone has been wiped out.

Iphone would not restore---- Error -50. I have tried to restore, and it restored it to the new point that it created after 5.0 was installed. How can I get it an older restore point from my backups and restore it on another computer? The phone has been wiped out. I can see earlier backups in my C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup folder. There are four subfolders in this address. I need my contacts, photos, and messages back. I know this is a common error but I can not figure it out. I have ran the other troublshoot items in the error steps for 13 and 14 like apple says. Is there a way to call apple and get a step by step of how to restore from another restore point? Does anybody have a solution????

It tells you to go to Error 13 and 14 if you receive error (-50).
Here is what I have tried...
Error 13 and 14: These errors are typically resolved by performing one or more of the steps listed below:
Perform USB isolation troubleshooting, including trying a different USB port directly on the computer. See the advanced steps below for USB troubleshooting. I have moved it around to different ports.
Put a USB 2.0 hub between the device and the computer. Didn't change anything.
    Try a different USB 30-pin dock-connector cable.
Eliminate third-party security software conflicts. Removed all virus protection and firewall.
There may be third-party software installed that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting one or more TcpWindowSize entries into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause this error. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet-size modification for assistance. Or, follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) to reset the packet size back to the default for Windows.Used the Microsoft fix it.
Connect your computer directly to your Internet source, bypassing any routers, hubs, or switches. You may need to restart your computer and modem to get online. Doesn't matter.
Try to restore from another known-good computer and network. I do not know how to do this or how to find the correct/full/complete restore point. There should be more information for this.

  • Can't install maverick on my wiped out late 2013 retina macbook pro. Please help.

So, i decided to install windows 8.1 alongside mavericks on the mac and tried using bootcamp which failed, so i manually created a partiton using disk utility which worked, later i decided to create a shared partition so windows and mac could share files on the harddrive. i decided to format the drive in windows which i thought worked well, until i had to restart the computer only to realise it had completely wiped out my mac os x and recovery partition. Ive tried everything possible, even have a bootable maverick available on usb, yet everytime i choose the maverick setup to install using the (option) button it shows a stop sign. please help me figure this out. Final year student in architecture. Any information would be appreciated.
    thanks.

    Hi dodzi_k,
If a reformat from Windows removed the Recovery partition and is preventing the reinstall of Mavericks, you may need to boot to Internet Recovery to reformat the drive. You may find the following articles helpful:

  • How to recover I photos from hard drive?  I was told by Apple tech to reinstall my MAC OS X Install DVD, after doing so all of my data has been wiped out.

I had an issue with my Mac and called Apple the tech told me to reinstall my MAC OS X Install DVD.  I specifically asked if I needed to do a back up before doing so, I was told that it would not be necessary none of my data would be lost.  After installation everything was wiped out.  I am most concerned about retrieving my I photos.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

You did not do a reinstall but rather an Erase and Install. If you don't have a backup, which you should have already had, then you need to see the following:
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Got my Iphone unlocked recently and now when inserted new sim, all the apps got wiped out, tried syncing it again from itunes but still it isnt getting installed. Can someone help?

    Hi,
Recently I got my Iphone unlocked. Earlier I was using it on ATT n/w. After unlock i am using it in India with a service provider here.
The problem that I am getting is, the phone was able to pick up the network and am able to make calls and messages. Data plan is still to be activated so cant confirm on that, but all the apps that were there on my phone got wiped out on its own. Since I wasnt sure as to what happend, so I reinstalled the apps today morning. I saw the apps getting installed and then left to get ready for my office. after nearly 30 mins I saw nothing was getting syncronized so disconnected the phone and left for Office. On reaching office when I checked for my usual Apps, I could see only the apple apps and none other available there. Need to know whats the issue and how to resolve it. Please can someone help me on this?

I can not get to iPhone screen, so no way to get to Settings. That is the problem. When I connect phone to iTunes I get screen asking to insert SIN card. On the phone I'm getting Cinfigure screen asking Launguage , Country or Region, Wi-Fi, ( I can connect to my home wi-fi), and last screen "Activating your iPhone". After two minutes of waiting IM getting message: Your iPhone could not be activated because the activation server in temporary unavailable. try connecting to iTunes or try later or contat apple.com/support.
Like I mention, I went to Bell as well Rogers store and tried to insert active SIM card with no results.
Yes, my friend unlock the phone to use with Rogers but I don't know where

  • Hello i have a problem with my MacBook Air they wiped out the operating system then installed windows 7 how do i re install the apple firmware

Hello i have a problem with my MacBook Air they wiped out the operating system then installed windows 7 how do i re install the apple firmware please help

That is incorrect. You can install Windows on a Mac, any Mac, without having OS X installed on it.
To the OP you will need the original system reinstall USB thumb drive that came with your Mac Air if it is older than a Mid 2011 model or if it is newer than a Mid 2011 model you use the Online Internet recovery system.
If you don't have that original reinstall USB thumb drive you can order one from Apple for a small charge. Call Apple and ask to speak to someone Specifically to order a Replacement USB system reinstall thumb drive for your model year. You will need the serial number of that Air. It is etched into the bottom of the case.

  • IPad wiped out after trying to install OS6

I just tried to install OS6 on my iPad 2 from the latest iTunes version. I went away and came back to find that the update has failed, and my iPad's firmware seems to have been completely wiped out. It is stuck on the "connect to itunes" screen, and my itunes will not see it !! I have no idea how to restore it. Has anyone come across this problem ?

    Recovery Mode:
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Connect USB cable to computer; leave the other end alone
    3. Press and hold the Home button down and connect the docking end of cable to iPad
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect To iTune" screen
    5. Release the Home button
    6. Open iTune
    7. You should see "iTunes has detected an iPad in recovery mode"
    8. Use iTune to restore iPad
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad

    Hello,
In that case, what you want to do is run a program which sends an ATA SECURE ERASE command to the hard disk drive, which tells the embedded controller in the drive to basically purge the contents of the drive.  When it's finished running, there will be no information left on the disk.
If you are comfortable with Linux, this can be done by running the HDParm command.  The  Center for Magnetic Recording Research at UC San Diego has released a Secure Erase program which can be run from DOS.  There's also the Parted Magic Linux Live CD/USB, which creates a bootable CD/DVD/USB flash to boot from, but it's not free.
Another option would be to run Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN).  This program does not perform an ATA SECURE ERASE command, but instead overwrites all of the areas on the disk so that no information will be retrievable.  When finished, you will have a blank drive as well.
At that point, you can just boot off of your Windows 7 installation USB flash drive and load the operating system onto the now-empty hard disk drive inside the ThinkPad X220 as you normally would.

  • Itunes on a new pc wiped out my apps.

I needed a PDF file off another pc.  Can you just drag and drop it to the ipad? Don't know if you can or how. So... I installed iTunes and connected the ipad, Authorized the computer and transferred purchases up so when I sycd it would not wipe out everything. So it syc'd the apps but wiped out most of my folders. Went back to my normals Pc. Spent two hours dragging apps around and recreating folder structure. Went to sync and got the message could not identify the ipad. Then it wiped out all my apps. Looked for a backup file to restore from but that could not be found even though I see messages that this thing is backing up all the time.
Anybody got any ideas how I get out of this mess and why Apple thinkds this is an acceptable way to manage a device. All I really wanted to do is move one PDF file to my iPad so I could read it in good reader but no I need to mess with the godawful iTunes. Right now I am down about 2 hours of work and 200+ apps.
    This stinks.
    Thanks Apple.

If you sync with iTunes, yes there is a backup out there. I'm sure that you see the backup taking in place in the progress bar at the top of the iTunes window when the iPad is syncing.
Connect the iPad to the computer that you sync with, launch iTunes, and right click on the iPad name under the devices heading and select Restore from Backup from the contextual menu. A window will pop up with a drop down menu that will let you select any backup that you have in iTunes. If the backup that you are looking for is not in there - don't restore - just cancel the process and eject the iPad. If the backup is there, then restore from it.
However, the backup only contains device settings, your app data and settings, Safari History, Notes, Calendar Entries, mail accounts, your camera roll photos and videos, your home screen layout - and yes  - it should also contain your folder structure ...and other things that you can read about here.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
You still have to sync your media back to the iPad after you restore from the backup because those things are not contained in the backup - but are stored in iTunes instead. Apps, movies, music, books, photos, TV Shows, and so on.
If the apps are not in your iTunes library due to the fact that the iPad was erased when you synced with a second computer, they can be downloaded again at no charge as long as you use the same Apple ID that you bought them with. Read this for more information on downloading past purchases.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT251
A very simple way to retrieve a PDF file from another computer would be to email it to yourself on the iPad. No need to connect the iPad and drag and drop a PDF from a second computer.
